27. Design, synthesis and material property investigation of degradable block copolymers prepared via the combination of ROCOP and ROP

Abstract

The thesis focuses on the synthesis of (multi)block copolyesters using combinations of the ring-opening copolymerization of anhydrides/epoxides and the ring-opening polymerization of lactones. All the new block copolyesters are fully characterized and in depth investigations of the materials' properties include evaluations as thermoplastic elastomers, shape memory polymers and polymers for biomedicine. Chapter 2 describes the polymerization of ɛ-caprolactone, using a di-zinc catalyst and various diols. A mixture of two polymer chain architectures is observed when using diols featuring secondary hydroxyls: these comprise chains which are either chain extended or chain terminated by the diol. This observation highlights the importance of analyzing the polymer architecture, the analysis may be achieved using a combination of NMR spectroscopic techniques, in the ring-opening polymerization of ɛ-caprolactone and refutes the common assumption that a single chain extended structure is produced in all cases. Chapter 3 uses di-zinc catalysts to selectively polymerize mixtures of lactones, epoxides and cyclic anhydrides to form multiblock copolyesters. By controlling the chemistry of the Zn-OP (P represents polymer chain) it is possible to select for a particular polymerization route and thereby allow access to multiblock copolymers having both alternating polyester blocks and aliphatic polyester blocks. The switchable catalysis is established to be generally applicable to a range of lactone/epoxide/cyclic anhydride combinations. The unusual catalyst selectivity is proposed to arise due to both kinetic and thermodynamic factors. Chapter 4 applies the selective catalysis to make multiblock copolymers which are subsequently chain-extended by reactions with diisocyanates. This method allows the preparation of amorphous multiblock copolymers comprising hard blocks from the ring-opening copolymerization of phthalic anhydride (PA) and cyclohexene oxide (CHO) and soft blocks from the ring-opening polymerization of ε-decalactone (DL). The obtained multiblock polymers function as thermoplastic elastomers, and shape memory materials, which are fully characterized and various application areas are proposed. Chapter 5 reports the synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers, featuring hydrophobic poly(ɛ-caprolactone) blocks and hydrophilic blocks produced by the alternating copolymerization of maleic anhydride and epoxides featuring ether chains. The block copolyesters are designed to be both biodegradable and biocompatible. Block copolymers with different hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratios are processed to form self-assembled nanostructures in aqueous solutions, and show a range of different morphologies. The (bio)degradability, biocompatibility and drug release profiles are studies.

30. Elasto-Plastic Seismic Shear Distributions of Frame-Wall Structures.

Abstract

In this study, theoretical and numerical methods were used to research seismic shear distributions of frame-shear wall structures under elasto-plastic conditions. The shear distributions of frame-shear walls were analyzed based on a simplified elasto-plastic analysis model of flexural shear. Based on a preliminary project, three groups of 2D models with different stiffness eigenvalues were designed and used to compare the shear distributions of whole structures and frames. The characteristics of the shear distributions of structures and frames and the development of plastic hinges were analyzed, and the rationality of shear adjustment based on Chinese standards was discussed from the perspectives of structural design, seismic performance and collapse resistance. The results revealed obvious differences between shear distributions of structures caused by strong vs. frequent earthquakes. For strong earthquakes, the shear distributions tended to be evenly distributed with respect to height, while the shear force of the bottom story was significantly larger than that of the upper stories. This was mainly caused by the redistribution of plastic internal forces due to the development of plastic hinges. The shear adjustment of the frame usually affected the reinforcement in the beams rather than in the columns, which contradicted the design concept of strong columns – weak beams. Additionally, shear adjustment had little effect on the seismic performance and collapse resistance of structures. This paper suggests that by ensuring the ability of strong columns, weak beams and plastic hinges to rotate, shear force adjustment can be prevented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs)-based nanoreactors have attracted broad interest in many fields due to their void-confinement effects. However, the inherent drawback of conventional nanoreactors is the lack of internal active sites, which limits their widespread utilization. Herein, we report the construction of hierarchical COF (EB-TFP) nanoreactor with pre-synthesized polyoxometalates (POM, [PV2W10O40]5− (PV2W10)) clusters encapsulated inside of COF (POM@COF). PV2W10@EB-TFP anchors nucleophilic-group (Br− ions) and PV2W10 anion cluster within the COF framework via electrostatic interactions, which not only simplifies the reaction system but also enhances catalytic efficiency. The reaction performance of the PV2W10@EB-TFP nanoreactor can be tuned to achieve excellent catalytic activity in CO2 cycloaddition reaction (CCR) for ∼ 97.63% conversion and ∼ 100% selectivity under visible light irradiation. A mechanistic study based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in-situ characterization was also carried out. In summary, we have reported a method for achieving the uniform dispersion of POM single clusters into COF nanoreactor, demonstrating the potential of POM@COF nanoreactor for synergistic photothermal catalytic CO2 cycloaddition. Abstract

Thermal deformation behavior of Cu–Cr–Sn alloy ingots under deformation temperatures ranging from 600 °C to 950 °C and strain rates from 0.01 s−1 to 10 s−1 was investigated in detail. The thermal deformation constitutive equation and thermal processing map of the alloy were established, respectively. The activation energy Q was determined as 430.61 KJ/mol. The optimal deformation system corresponding to the hot working diagram was a deformation temperature of 900 °C and strain rate of 0.1 s−1. Under these deformation conditions, twin dynamic recrystallization (TDRX), continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX), and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) occurred simultaneously, with the twinning process causing the stress–strain curve to exhibit a wavy change. The thermal deformation microstructure of the alloy is co-regulated by different recrystallization mechanisms, with DDRX occurring mainly at low deformation temperatures, and both CDRX and DDRX occurring at high deformation temperatures. Abstract

In this study, a zero‐gap flow‐through microfluidic reactor was constructed for the degradation of tetracycline and norfloxacin in water using a porous Ti/RuO2‐IrO2@Pt electrode as the anode and porous titanium plate as the cathode. The operation parameters included electrolyte type, electrolyte concentration, current density, initial concentration of pollutants and pH, were investigated. The degradation efficiency and energy consumption were calculated and compared with traditional electrolyzer. In the zero‐gap flow‐through microfluidic reactor, 100 % of both tetracycline and norfloxacin can be decomposed in 15 min, and high mineralization rate were achieved under the optimized reaction condition. And the reaction was consistent with pseudo‐first‐order kinetics with k value of 0.492 cm−1 and 1.010 cm−1, for tetracycline and norfloxacin, respectively. In addition, the energy consumption was 28.33 kWh ⋅ kg−1 TC and 8.36 kWh ⋅ kg−1 NOR, for tetracycline and norfloxacin, respectively, which was much lower than that of traditional electrolyzer. The LC–MS results showed that tetracycline underwent a series of demethylation, dehydration and deamination reactions, and the norfloxacin went through ring opening reaction, decarboxylation and hydroxylation reaction, and finally both produced CO2 and H2O. Abstract

In this study, the performance of a zero-gap flow-through reactor with three-dimensional (3D) porous Ti/RuO2-TiO2@Pt anodes was systematically investigated for the electrocatalytic oxidation of phenolic wastewater, considering phenol and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) as the target pollutants. The optimum parameters for the electrochemical oxidation of phenol and 4-NP were examined. For phenol degradation, at an initial concentration of 50 mg/L, initial pH of 7, NaCl concentration of 10.0 g/L, current density of 10 mA/cm2, and retention time of 30 min, the degradation efficiency achieved was 95.05%, with an energy consumption of 15.39 kWh/kg; meanwhile, for 4-NP, the degradation efficiency was 98.42% and energy consumption was 19.21 kWh/kg (at an initial concentration of 40 mg/L, initial pH of 3, NaCl concentration of 10.0 g/L, current density of 10 mA/cm2, and retention time of 30 min). The electrocatalytic oxidation of phenol and 4-NP conformed to the pseudo-first-order kinetics model, and the k values were 0.2562 min−1 and 0.1736 min−1, respectively, which are 1.7 and 3.6-times higher than those of a conventional electrolyzer. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) was used to verify the intermediates formed during the degradation of phenol or 4-NP and a possible degradation pathway was provided. The extremely narrow electrode distance and the flow-through configuration of the zero-gap flow-through reactor were thought to be essential for its lower energy consumption and higher mass transfer efficiency. The zero-gap flow-through reactor with a novel 3D porous Ti/RuO2-TiO2@Pt electrode is a superior alternative for the treatment of industrial wastewater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Self‐assembly of subnanometer (sub‐1 nm) scale polyhedral building blocks can yield some superstructures with novel and interesting morphology as well as potential functionalities. However, achieving the self‐assembly of sub‐1 nm polyhedral building blocks is still a great challenge. Herein, through encapsulating the titanium‐substituted polyoxometalate (POM, K7PTi2W10O40) with tetrabutylammonium cations (TBA+), we first synthesized a sub‐1 nm rhombic dodecahedral building block by further tailoring the spatial distribution of TBA+ on the POM. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations demonstrated the eight TBA+ cations interacted with the POM cluster and formed the sub‐1 nm rhombic dodecahedron. As a result of anisotropy, the sub‐1 nm building blocks have self‐assembled into rhombic dodecahedral POM (RD‐POM) assemblies at the microscale. Benefiting from the regular structure, Br− ions, and abundant active sites, the obtained RD‐POM assemblies exhibit excellent catalytic performance in the cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides without co‐catalysts. This work provides a promising approach to tailor the symmetry and structure of sub‐1 nm building blocks by tuning the spatial distribution of ligands, which may shed light on the fabrication of superstructures with novel properties by self‐assembly.
