Riparian zones (RZs) have a clear distinct behaviour than the rest of the landscape. Particularly in water-limited regions, such as the Brazilian Savannah (Cerrado biome), where dry season may extend 5 months, the difference between riparian and upland zones is highly pronounced due to vegetation water access to groundwater, and this can have implications on the climatic and hydrological cycles. In order to quantify this difference at large-scale, it was herein proposed to (1) map RZs using topographical information, (2) investigate how land cover is distributed among topographic gradients and (3) investigate vegetation behaviour through remote sensing vegetation measurements and evapotranspiration (ET) estimation. A 140,000 km² upland region inside the Cerrado biome, called the Urucuia aquifer system, was chosen as study site. The region has seen a huge agricultural expansion during the last decades, with mechanized and irrigated crops increasingly using water from its underground reserves, which associated with climate change can have a big impact on the ecosystem, and understanding the role of RZs can be essential to quantify this impact. The height above nearest drainage (HAND) index was used to map RZs, by visually assessing bellow which values the index provided a reasonable RZ buffer comparing with Google Earth imagery. We also used HAND to quantify across its values the historical land cover distribution obtained by the MapBiomas database, and analyse vegetation behaviour in RZs and upland zones (UZs) using remote sensing vegetation measurements of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and normalized difference moisture index (NDMI) and ET estimation from the surface energy balance algorithm for land (SEBAL). A necessary step for HAND computation is a defined stream network, for which the main challenge is identifying channel heads. Herein it was developed an algorithm that produced a varying draining area threshold (vDAT) map for channel initiation, using the topographic position index (TPI) as an auxiliary variable. This algorithm was tested using MERIT-DEM. With the stream network, HAND values bellow 5 m provided the best RZ buffer. As for land cover distribution, we captured that forests naturally occur more densely in the extreme values of HAND (very shallow and very deep) and that farmland historical occupation in the Urucuia region occur more in the upper portions of the terrain, possibly due to soil conditions stablished during landscape formation and evolution. As for vegetation activity, the land cover class seems to have more influence on vegetation behaviour than topographic position, for all indicators computed. Yet, NDMI values in Riparian Forests are greater than in Upland Forests, particularly towards drier conditions, in terms of both seasonality (drier months) and inter-annual variability (drier years). Despite this indication of more water available in RZs than UZs, the ET estimation could not capture these differences, possibly due to difficulties in estimating this variable in natural vegetation with high degree of water stress.

Urbanization process transforms original landscapes into an anthropic mosaic, causing impacts on hydrologic cycles and on landscape structure and functions. Aiming at the maintenance of the water resources and biodiversity, in an urbanized watershed, the objective of this study was the definition of priority areas for forest restoration. We used a Multicriteria Evaluation (MCE) method, following the steps: criteria definition, identification of the criteria importance, and criteria aggregation through Weighted Linear Combination (WLC). According to the experts, consulted in the context of the Participatory Technique, only two criteria represented the studied landscape: proximity to drainage network and proximity to forest patches. The first criterion was considered twice more important than the second, and through the pairwise comparison matrix, it was obtained respectively the criterion weights of 0.83 and 0.17. The priority map was obtained through the criteria aggregation, using WLC, that considered the criterion weights. The result was a priority map, indicating 5.06% of the study area with very-high priority for forest restoration; 5.22% with high priority; 5.76% with medium priority; 5,42% with low and; 78.53% with very-low priority. We can say that the framework predefined for the study proposed a scenario for priority areas that allowed driving the actions in order to obtain a landscape restoration, beginning through a forest corridor in the riparian zone. Thus, we concluded that the definition of priority areas for forest restoration is possible in an urbanized landscape, using the traditional WLC Multicriteria method. RESUMO O processo de urbanização transforma paisagens originais em um mosaico antropizado, causando impactos no ciclo hidrológico, na estrutura e função destas paisagens. Visando à manutenção dos recursos hídricos e da biodiversidade, em uma bacia hidrográfica urbanizada, o objetivo deste estudo foi a definição de áreas prioritárias à restauração florestal. Utilizou-se um método de Avaliação Multicriterial (AMC), seguindo as etapas: definição de critérios, identificação da importância dos critérios e, agregação de critérios por meio do método da Combinação Linear Ponderada (CLP). De acordo com os especialistas consultados, no contexto da Técnica Participatória, apenas dois critérios representavam a paisagem estudada: o proximidade à rede de drenagem e o proximidade aos fragmentos florestais. O primeiro critério foi considerado duas vezes mais importante do que o segundo e, por meio da matriz de comparação pareada, foram obtidos seus pesos de critério, respectivamente, de 0,83 e de 0,17. Estes pesos foram considerados na agregação dos critérios, por meio da CLP. O resultado foi um mapa de priorização de áreas, o qual apontou 5,06% da área de estudo com prioridade muito alta para restauração florestal; 5,22% com alta prioridade; 5,76% com prioridade média; 5,42% com baixa e; 78,53% com prioridade muito baixa. Pode-se assim dizer que a estrutura do processo decisório possibilitou a obtenção de um cenário à priorização de áreas, que direciona as ações de forma a se ter a restauração da paisagem, iniciando-se pela formação de um corredor florestal na zona ripária. Dessa forma, conclui-se que a definição de áreas prioritárias à restauração florestal é possível em uma paisagem urbanizada, utilizando o tradicional método da CLP de análise Multicriterial.

We assessed two dimensions of stream connectivity: longitudinal (between forest patches along the stream) and lateral (riparian vegetation), using macroinvertebrate assemblages as bioindicators. Sites representing different land-uses were sampled in a lowland basin that holds a mosaic of protected areas. Land-use analysis, forest successional stages and riparian zone widths were calculated by the GIS analysis. Macroinvertebrate fauna was strongly affected by land-use. We observed a continuous decrease in the number of sensitive species, %Shredders and IBE-IOC biotic index from the upstream protected area to highly deforested sites, increasing again where the stream crosses a Biological Reserve. When analysing buffer strips, we found aquatic fauna responding to land-use alterations beyond the 30 m riparian corridor (60 m and 100 m wide). We discussed the longitudinal connectivity between forest patches and the riparian vegetation buffer strips necessary to hold high macroinvertebrate diversity. We recommend actions for the increase/maintenance of biodiversity in this and other lowland basins. Neste trabalho, foram avaliadas duas dimensões de conectividade em um ecossistema lótico: longitudinal (entre fragmentos florestais ao longo do córrego) e lateral (mata ripária), utilizando-se assembléias de macroinvertebrados como indicadores. Pontos que representam diferentes tipos de usos da terra foram amostrados em uma bacia de planície litorânea, que abriga um mosaico de áreas protegidas. As análises de uso da terra, os estágios de sucessão florestal e as diferentes larguras da zona ripária foram calculados utilizando-se um SIG. A fauna de macroinvertebrados foi fortemente afetada pelo uso da terra. Partindo-se da área protegida à montante, observou-se um decréscimo contínuo do número de espécies sensíveis, da porcentagem de fragmentadores e do índice biótico IBE-IOC até o trecho fortemente desflorestado, no médio curso do rio; os valores aumentam novamente, quando o rio atravessa uma Reserva Biológica. Ao analisar a largura da vegetação ripária, constatou-se que a fauna aquática responde às alterações além do corredor ripário com 30 m de largura (60 m e 100 m de largura). Discutiu-se sobre a conectividade longitudinal entre fragmentos florestais e sobre a largura necessária da vegetação ripária para manter a alta diversidade de macroinvertebrados. Dessa forma, foram feitas recomendações visando a favorecer o aumento/a manutenção da biodiversidade, tanto na bacia analisada como em outras bacias localizadas em planícies litorâneas.

Este artigo apresenta uma revisão conceitual sobre a relação entre os mecanismos de geração de escoamento e as áreas hidrologicamente sensíveis (AHS). Propõe-se a aproximação do conceito de AHSs na delimitação de áreas de preservação permanente (APPs) devido à capacidade de geração de escoamento superficial por saturação destas áreas, estabelecendo assim a transferência de sedimentos e poluentes incidentes à jusante em direção aos canais. Reconhece-se a importância das AHSs como um novo paradigma na delimitação de APPs de acordo com características hidrogeomorfológicas da bacia hidrográfica. Por fim, observa-se ainda a necessidade de um aprofundamento na busca de um indicador de sensibilidade hidrológica das paisagens que possa ser utilizado em bacias hidrográficas com distintas características fisiográficas.

Riparian zones represent areas of strong biological, physical and chemical interaction between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. These areas are usually typified by high diversity of fauna, flora and environmental processes. The present study evaluates the littoral habitat structure and its fish fauna related to associations between presence and absence of natural riparian vegetal cover, in a reservoir in northeastern Brazil. Sampling was performed on marginal areas where riparian vegetation was present and where it had been removed for the plantation of sugar cane. For each type of marginal area three replicate sites were sampled during the wet season. Data on the habitat structure (submerged elements and substrate composition), fish and water quality were collected. The data was analyzed using Shannon-Wiener's diversity index and Pielou's equitability. Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling and the Multi-Response Permutation Procedure were used to evaluate similarities between sites. The structure of the habitat was more diverse in sites were natural riparian vegetation was still present. Muddy substrate was more abundant in areas with riparian vegetation whereas sandy substrate was more abundant in areas where riparian vegetation had been removed. Measured physico-chemical parameters and nutrients remained nearly constant across all sites. Metynnis lippincottianus and Crenicichla menezesi were more associated with the habitat in areas where riparian vegetation was removed, whereas Cichlasoma orientale and Cichla ocellaris were strongly correlated to forested areas. A zona ripária representa uma área de importantes interações, sejam biológicas, físicas ou químicas, entre o ecossistema terrestre e aquático. Essas áreas são geralmente caracterizadas por uma alta diversidade de fauna, flora e processos ecológicos. Este estudo avalia a estrutura do habitat aquático e a fauna de peixes com relação à presença e ausência da mata ciliar natural em um reservatório no Nordeste brasileiro. Amostragens foram realizadas em áreas marginais onde a mata ciliar estava presente e onde esta havia sido removida para o plantio de cana-de-açúcar. Em cada área, três pontos de coleta foram amostrados durante o período chuvoso. Dados sobre a estrutura do habitat (elementos submersos e composição do substrato), peixes e qualidade da água foram coletados. Os dados foram analisados usando o índice de diversidade de Shannon-Wiener e a equitabilidade de Pielou. Escalonamento multidimensional não métrico associado a um procedimento de permutações multiplas foi usado para avaliar as similaridades entre os pontos de coleta. A estrutura do habitat mostrou-se mais diversa em locais onde a mata ciliar não havia sido removida. Lama foi o tipo de substrato mais abundante em áreas onde a mata ciliar esteve intacta, enquanto que areia foi o tipo de substrato mais comum em áreas onde a mata ciliar foi removida. Variáveis físico-químicas e nutrientes dissolvidos na água apresentaram valores relativamente constantes em todos os locais estudados. Metynnis lippincottianus e Crenicichla menezesi estiveram associados com áreas onde a mata ciliar foi removida, enquanto Cichlasoma orientale e Cichla ocellaris estiveram mais fortemente correlacionados com áreas onde a mata ciliar estava preservada.

O Vale do rio Paraíba do Sul pode ser caracterizado pela supressão intensa de suas formações vegetais nativas adjacentes. Este trabalho buscou caracterizar a estrutura e a flora de fragmentos florestais remanescentes localizados em São José dos Campos (Eugênio de Melo - EM) e Tremembé (TR) e obter a listagem de espécies florestais de várzea inundável recomendada para recuperação de áreas degradadas da região. Cada área recebeu duas parcelas (50 × 20 m) onde foram incluídas árvores com diâmetro a 1,30 m de altura do solo ≥ 5 cm. Para a interpretação dos dados foram utilizados os parâmetros fitossociológicos usuais e análises multivariadas, assim como o índice de diversidade de Shannon (H') e de equabilidade de Pielou (E). A fitofisionomia em TR é mais heterogênea e complexa comparada à EM, cuja homogeneidade é expressa pelo predomínio de populações de Sebastiania commersoniana e Alchornea triplinervia. The Valley of Paraiba do Sul River is marked by the suppression of river-margin native vegetation. The flora and the structure of forests fragments located in São José dos Campos (Eugênio de Melo - EM) and Tremembé (TR) have been characterized to obtain a list of tree species recommended for recovery of degraded floodplain areas. Each area received two plots (50 × 20 m) with the criteria of trees with breast diameter height (1.30 m) ≥ 5 cm. The data interpretation was based on usual phytosociology parameter and multivariate analyzes, as well as the Shannon diversity index (H') and Pielou evenness (E). The phytophysionomy in TR is more heterogeneous and complex compared to EM, whose homogeneity is expressed by the predominance of Sebastiania commersoniana and Alchornea triplinervia.
