Eutrophication is a significant challenge for surface water, with sediment phosphorus (P) release being a key contributor. Although biological aluminum-based P-inactivation agent (BA-PIA) has shown effectiveness in controlling P release from sediment, the efficiency and mechanism by BA-PIA capping is still not fully understood. This study explored the efficiency and mechanism of using BA-PIA capping controlling P release from sediment. The main mechanisms controlling P release from sediment via BA-PIA capping involved transforming mobile and less stable fractions into stable ones, passivating DGT-labile P and establishing a 13 mm 'P static layer' within the sediment. Additionally, BA-PIA's impact on Fe redox processes significantly influenced P release from the sediment. After BA-PIA capping, notable reductions were observed in total P, soluble reactive P (SRP), and diffusive gradient in thin-films (DGT)-measured labile P (DGT-labile P) concentration in the overlying water, with reduction rates of 95.6%, 92.7%, and 96.5%, respectively. After BA-PIA capping, the diffusion flux of SRP across the sediment-water interface and the apparent P diffusion flux decreased by 91.3% and 97.8%, respectively. Additionally, BA-PIA capping led to reduced concentrations of SRP, DGT-labile P, and DGT-measured labile Fe(II) in the sediment interstitial water. Notably, BA-PIA capping significantly reduced P content and facilitated transformation in the 0∼30 mm sediment layers but not in the 30∼45 mm and 45∼60 mm sediment layers for NaOH-extractable inorganic P and HCl-extracted P. Purpose: Adsorbent amendment to contaminated sediments is one in situ remediation method to decrease the bioaccessibility of pollutants from the sediments. In this work, alkali-activated blast furnace slag (BFS) granules were used in a field experiment at Lake Kivijärvi (Finland). The lake was heavily affected by a mining accident in 2012, which released a significant peak load of metals and sulfate. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the performance of the novel amendment material for in situ remediation in real conditions with a preliminary cost estimation. Methods: Alkali-activated BFS granules were prepared and characterized for composition, microstructure, and surface properties. Two mesocosms were placed in the lake: one with granule dosing and another without. Sediment and pore water samples were collected after a two-week period. Similar small-scale experiment was performed in laboratory with a three-month duration. Bioaccessibility of metals from sediments was assessed with a three-stage leaching procedure. Results: The granules were effective in decreasing the mobility of Fe, Zn, Ni, and Cr in all leaching stages by approximately 50–90% in comparison with unamended sediment in the mesocosm experiment. Laboratory-scale incubation experiments also indicated decreased release of Ba, Co, Ni, Al, Fe, Mg, Mn and S. The estimated material costs were lower than the removal of the contaminated sediments with dredging and off-site treatment. Conclusion: The results showed preliminarily the effectiveness of alkaline-activated BFS in the remediation of metal-contaminated sediments in a field experiment. The objectives of this study are to assess the effectiveness of limestone (LS), steel slag (SS), and activated carbon (AC) as capping materials to sequester trace metals including As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in heavily contaminated marine sediments and to minimize the release of these metals into the water column. A flat flow tank was filled with 10 mm of capping material, contaminated sediments, and seawater, and the metal concentrations were monitored over 32 d. After completion of the flow tank experiments, the sediments below the capping material were sampled and were sequentially extracted. SS effectively reduced the As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and particularly Cd elution from the contaminated sediments to the overlying seawater. Adsorption and surface precipitation were the key mechanisms for interrupting the release of cationic trace metals by SS. LS was appropriate for interrupting the release of only Cu and Pb with high hydrolysis reaction constants. AC capping could interrupt the release of Cr, Cu, Ni, and particularly Zn from the sediments by binding with the metals via electrostatic interaction. The results obtained from the sequential extraction revealed that LS capping is appropriate for stabilizing Zn, whereas AC is appropriate for Cd and Pb. LS, SS, and AC can be applied effectively for remediation of sediments contaminated by trace metals because it interrupts their release and stabilizes the trace metals in the sediments. Sulfur-impregnated activated carbon (SAC) has been reported with a high affinity to Hg, but little research has done on understanding its potential as active cap for inhibition of Hg release from contaminated sediments. In this study, high-quality coconut-shell activated carbon (AC) and its derived SAC were examined and shown to have great affinity to both aqueous Hg 2+ and methylmercury (MeHg). SAC had greater partitioning coefficients for Hg 2+ (K D  = 9.42  ×  10 4 ) and MeHg (K D  = 7.661  ×  10 5 ) as compared to those for AC (K D  = 3.69  ×  10 4 and 2.25  ×  10 5 , respectively). However, AC appeared to have greater inhibition in total Hg (THg) leaching from sediment (14.2–235.8 mg-Hg/kg-sediment) to porewater phase as compared to SAC. 3 wt% AC amendment in sediment (235.8 mg/kg Hg) was the optimum dosage causing the porewater THg reduction by 99.88%. Moreover, significant inhibition in both THg and MeHg releases within the 83-d trial microcosm tests was demonstrated with active caps composed of SAC + bentonite, SAC + clean sediment, and AC + bentonite. While both AC and SAC successfully reduce the porewater Hg in sediment environment, the smaller inhibition in Hg release by SAC as compared to that by raw AC may suggest that possibly formed HgS nanoparticles could be released into the porewater that elevates the porewater Hg concentration. Biochar was tested as an active capping material for oil spill contaminated sediment and its performance was compared to activated carbon and organoclay. Polydimethyilsiloxane fibers were used as passive samplers to evaluate the vertical porewater concentration of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons through the sea-sediment and the capping layer (1 cm resolution). Experiments were carried out on the laboratory scale using 7.5 cm (∼500 g) of contaminated sea-sediment that were capped with 3 cm (∼150 g) of capping materials. The porewater concentrations of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were compared using a reactive-diffusion model. Biochar showed a greater capping efficiency than activated carbon and organoclay. For example, anthracene porewater concentrations in the first centimetre of capping material, after 1 month, were reduced by 69%, 56% and 99% respectively for activated carbon, organoclay and biochar. The porewater concentrations were used to model the long term (≥12 months) behaviour of various cap configurations with a numerical simulations. The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of sea sand (SS), crushed concrete (CC), and bentonite (BN) as a capping material to block the release of trace metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) from heavily contaminated marine sediments, and to stabilize/solidify these trace metals in the sediments. The efficiency of SS, CC, and BN for blocking trace metals was evaluated in a flat flow tank in which a 1-cm-thick layer of capping materials was placed above the contaminated sediments. Trace metals were released into the overlying water from contaminated sediments in the following decreasing order: Cd > As > Zn > Ni > Pb > Cr > Cu. Electronegativity, electrostatic force, or metal hydrolysis significantly influenced the mobility of trace metals in sediments. The elution of Cu, Ni, and Cd from contaminated sediments was effectively reduced by CC, especially in case of Cd elution. SS was appropriate for interrupting Cr and Zn release, and BN was appropriate for interrupting Pb release. A sequential extraction study demonstrated that SS capping is appropriate for stabilizing As, Cu, and Ni; CC capping for Zn; and BN capping for Pb. Due to anthropogenic activities, heavy metals are discharged into the hydrosphere and deposit onto the sediment. Heavy metals remobilize through physical disturbance and change in environmental conditions, posing a risk to environments and human health. Among several remediation methods, active layer capping is considered to be more feasible due to its financial and technical advantages; however, its long-term effects remain unknown. To overcome this problem, this work applied a novel, recoverable amendment, sulfurized magnetic biochar (SMBC), to remediate multiple heavy metal (Cu, Ni, Zn, Cr, Hg, and MeHg) contaminated sediment. Physiochemical characterization shows magnetite (Fe 3 O 4) crystalline in both magnetic biochar (MBC) and SMBC, with such characteristics resulting in a greater surface area (324.9 and 346.3 m2/g) than BC (39.6 m2/g) and SBC (65.0 m2/g). FeS crystalline was also observed in SMBC, which plays an important role in controlling heavy metal release from sediment. Microcosm experiments indicated the effectiveness of SMBC in lowering aquatic Cu, Ni, Zn, Hg, and MeHg releases was significantly greater than the other three biochar materials. Notably, the recovery of SMBC by magnetism was 87%, demonstrating the exceptional recoverability of SMBC from seawater and sediment. Based on its robust capability in lowering Cu, Ni, Zn, Hg, and MeHg release and excellent recoverability from seawater and sediment, this technique represents a practical alternative to conventional approaches for heavy metal immobilization from sediment. A novel bio-reactive capping barrier composed of polysulfone/granular activated carbon (PS/GAC) hybrid membranes immobilized with microorganism was developed for the remediation of nitrobenzene in sediments. The SEM observation demonstrated that all the membranes had a dense top layer and a porous sublayer, this structure can block the transfer of nitrobenzene from sediment to the water and enhance nitrobenzene degradation. Adsorption behaviors of nitrobenzene on membranes showed that the membrane impregnated with GAC had better performance than the pure PS membrane. The values of Kads increased from 4.64 (without GAC) to 6.19 (1:2 GAC). 20mg/L nitrobenzene can be completely degraded by Pseudomonas putida immobilized on membranes. The biodegradation rate of activated carbon-filled membrane system was little higher than that of pure PS membrane system. For remediation experiments, only about 21.7, 28.3 and 43.9% of nitrobenzene in the sediment was removed by the end of the experiments for PS/GAC membrane, sand-alone and sand amended with activated carbon capping systems, respectively. While for PS/GAC+microorganisms capping system, more than 70% of nitrobenzene loss was observed. Abstract: The objective of this study was to develop a novel integrated active capping system and to investigate its efficiency in the remediation of nitrobenzene-contaminated sediment. An integrated Fe(0)–sorbent–microorganism remediation system was proposed as an in situ active capping technique to remediate nitrobenzene-contaminated sediment. In this system, nitrobenzene was reduced to aniline by Fe(0), which has a much better biodegradability. The sorption capacity and structural properties of cinder was measured to examine its applicability as the sorbent and matrix for this integrated capping system. Indigenous microorganisms from Songhuajiang River sediment, which was contaminated by nitrobenzene and aniline in Chinese Petrochemical Explosion in Jilin, were acquired one month after the explosion and used in this active capping system to degrade nitrobenzene and its reduced product, aniline. A bench-scale remediation experiment was conducted on a mimicked nitrobenzene-contaminated sediment to investigate the efficiency of the integrated capping system and the synergistic effects of the combined components in the active capping system. The results show that this integrated active capping system can effectively block the release of target pollutants into the upper-layer water and remove the compounds from the environment. Abstract: Collateral Channel is a heavily polluted former navigation slip to the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (Illinois, USA). Characterization of sediment cores taken in the channel show high levels of heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other contaminants in deposited sediment dating back to the 1800''s. Of these, PAHs were the contaminants of greatest concern based upon exceedance of sediment contamination criteria (Σ16 PAHs up to 1500mg/kg). Benthic animal counts revealed a lack of biodiversity, with relatively low levels of small tubificid oligochaetes (generally <3000/m2) in surficial sediments. Comparison of surficial sediment contaminant levels between 1995 and 2005 showed few decreases in contaminant levels, indicating a lack of “natural recovery” processes occurring in the channel. These results led to an analysis of sediment amendments for an active capping demonstration project in the channel using transport models developed in our previous work (Viana et al., 2008). Based on the sediment characterization and modeling results, the active capping design will be focused on organic contaminant sequestration through the use of organoclay. A site-specific difficulty is the substantial rates of gas ebullition from anaerobic organic matter biodegradation in the sediments, particularly in the summer months. These gases can open advective channels that may result in substantial pollution release and compromise cap effectiveness, and thus the capping scenario must control for such releases. The active capping layer will underlay a sloped sand layer and a high permeability gas venting system to allow biogenically-produced gas migration to shoreline collectors through an innovative support grid. The cap will include an overlaying wetland to remove nutrients from the adjoining Chicago River and provide a public recreational space. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Zero-valent iron improves the transformation of DDT [1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane] and its metabolites in aged and highly contaminated lake sediment under biotic conditions. The addition of Fe0 has a strong effect on transformation rates at 22°C and 9°C, the most enhanced degradation being obtained for DDT and DDOH [2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethanol]. At 22°C and 10 weeks’ incubation, the DDT concentration is reduced from 2.75μmolg−1 (974mgkg−1) to 0.98μmol g−1 (346mgkg−1) and 1.98μmolg−1 (702mgkg−1) in samples with and without the addition of iron, respectively. After 40 weeks’ incubation these concentrations have further decreased to 0.19μmolg−1 (66mgkg−1) and 0.74μmolg−1 (264mgkg−1).There is no significant transformation of any of the compounds at 9°C without the addition of Fe0. In the presence of iron, however, DDT is reduced to 1.25μmolg−1 (442mgkg−1) within 40 weeks’ incubation. This study demonstrates the ability of adapted microorganisms to transform DDT under elevated temperatures in original, aged sediments, and also the stimulating effect of zero-valent iron, which is significant even at low temperatures. In this study, kaolinite, carbon black (CB), iron sulfide (FeS), hydroxyapatite (HAP), and oyster shell powder (OSP) were selected as potentially ideal amendments to immobilize metals in sediment, including Ni, Cr, Cu, Zn, and Hg. In aqueous batch experiments, the five adsorbents were tested for capturing the five potential toxic metals individually at various concentrations. HAP and OSP showed the largest removal efficiencies towards Ni (OSP: 76.47%), Cr (OSP: 100.00%), Cu (HAP: 98.39%), and Zn (HAP: 64.56%), with CB taking the third place. In contrast, FeS and CB played a more significant role in Hg removal (FeS: 100.00%; CB: 86.40%). In the modified six-column microcosm experiments, five mixing ratios based on various considerations using the five adsorbent materials were tested; the water samples were collected and analyzed every week for 135 days. Results showed that caps including CB could immobilize the release of Hg and methylmercury (MeHg) better than those with FeS. More economical caps, namely, with a higher portion of OSP in the mixed capping, could not reach comparable effects to those with more HAP for immobilizing Ni, but performed almost the same for the other four metals. Several innovative approaches have been proposed in recent years to remediate contaminated sediment to reduce human health and environmental risk. One of the challenges of sediment remediation stems from its unfeasible high cost, especially when ex situ strategies are selected. Therefore, in situ methods such as active capping have been emerging as possible options for solving sediment problems. Active capping methods have been extensively tested in field-scale sediment remediation for organic pollutants (e.g., PCBs, PAHs, DDT) contamination with good sequestration efficiency; however, these methods have not been widely tested for control of heavy metal pollutants, such as mercury (Hg). In this review, the potentials of using iron sulfide minerals to sequestrate Hg were discussed. Iron sulfide minerals are common in the natural environment and have shown good effectiveness in sequestrating Hg by adsorption or precipitation. Iron sulfides can also be synthesized in a laboratory and modified to enhance their sequestration ability for Hg. Some of the potential advantages of iron sulfides are pointed out here. Additional tests to understand the possibility of applying iron sulfides as active caps to remediate complicated environment systems should be conducted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sediments act normally as metal(loid) sinks, but if chemical conditions (such as pH or redox potential) change, they can become sources of secondary pollution. Consequently, various strategies for both in and ex situ remediation of contaminated sediments have been developed. One promising method is active capping, which involves the injection of adsorbents as a layer on the sediment surface or the mixing of adsorbents within the sediment. Adsorbents decrease the bioavailability of metal(loid)s. In the present work, the suitability of alkali-activated blast-furnace-slag, metakaolin geopolymer, and exfoliated vermiculite were evaluated for in situ stabilization of two metal(loid)-contaminated lake sediments through laboratory-scale experiments. The results indicated that adsorbent amendments had metal(loid)-specific performance: alkali-activated blast-furnace slag was suitable for Al, Cu, Fe, and Ni; metakaolin geopolymer for Cu, Cr (total), and Fe; and vermiculite for Al and Zn. None of the materials could stabilize Ba, Sr, or Ti. Furthermore, the amendments performed differently in two different lake sediments, implying that the effectiveness of the amendments needs to be confirmed on a case-by-case basis.
