Social appearance anxiety has been associated with many concepts, especially body image and self-esteem, and has a very high level of comorbidity. We aimed to examine the relationship between body mass index (BMI), body perception, social appearance anxiety and self-esteem among women, with a particular focus on the possible mediating effect of BMI regarding the relationship between social appearance anxiety and self-esteem. We included 1344 volunteer women in this study. The self-esteem scale scores of women differed significantly according to body image, BMI, and weighing frequency. Social appearance anxiety was found to be inversely associated with self-esteem, and this relationship remained significant when adjusted for BMI as a mediating parameter. As a result, it is expected that improving women's body perception and reducing social appearance anxiety are the foremost interventions to increase the self-esteem of these women.

NEANDERTHALS , *PHENOTYPES , *MOLECULAR biology , *ARTIFICIAL intelligence , *FORENSIC anthropology , *ARCHAEOLOGICAL human remains , *GENOTYPES - Abstract
The phenotype is the result of the interaction of the genotype with epigenetic factors and the environment. It has been considered that genetics is responsible for >70% of facial phenotype. Interestingly, besides sequencing nucleic acids, it is possible to generate DNA methylation maps of ancient remains, to determine phenotypes. Other application areas are medicine, forensics and law-enforcement. Thus, breakthroughs in nucleic-acid analyses are allowing to determine the phenotype from genotypic data. That is also being facilitated by developments in software (including parallel processing) and hardware, including neural engines (neural-network hardware). New strategies involving artificial intelligence and machine learning have been also deployed to reach such a goal. Phenotyping is a challenging task, on the edge of current technology. Promising results have already been obtained, including prediction of Neanderthal (Homo sapiens neanderthalensis) and Denisovan (Homo sapiens denisova) faces. The future is promising in this research area, in which ethical and legal implications should also be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Women have been dissatisfied with their own appearance. This study aimed to evaluate whether the media can influence changes in body image regarding weight concern, satisfaction and dysfunctional investment of one’s own appearance in female runway models and non-models. This survey was composed of Brazilian women, models who were linked with an agency, and non-models. Data collection was carried out using Google Forms, sending links to invite eligible subjects. In total, 102 models and 247 non-models participated in the survey. Sample Characterization Questionnaire, weight and height reports for the Body Mass Index, Sociocultural Attitudes Toward Appearance Questionnaire-3 (SATAQ-3), Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire - Appearance Scales (MBRSQ /AS) and Appearance Schemas Inventory - Revised (ASI-R) were used. The result showed that non-models are more susceptible to pressure from the media and that having body measurements considered ideal, like models, reduces social pressure on the body.

Despite the importance of body satisfaction on one’s self image and well-being, little has been written about body image or how it affects people in Iran. The aim of this study is to assess body dissatisfaction and its risk factors in the general Iranian population. The sample size for this cross-sectional study included approximately 1,200 participants (both male and female) and was conducted in 2011. Body dissatisfaction (based on the Figure Rating Scale), demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, body mass index (BMI) and use of the media were recorded. Nearly two thirds of the participants were included in the middle age group and roughly half of them had a university education. Approximately two thirds of the participants were satisfied with their body. The mean score of body dissatisfaction in women was greater than men (p < 0.0001). Age, gender, marital status and BMI had a significant relationship with body dissatisfaction. The finding of this study demonstrates that in Iran, body dissatisfaction and it consequences must be addressed. While the prevalence and pattern of body dissatisfaction in Iran is as high as other Asian countries, considering cultural variation within Asian countries is also important. - Abstract
Objective: To learn the opinion of a group of young patients about health personnel with tattoos., Method: Descriptive study conducted in the first semester of 2017 on patients admitted to the Obstetrics Unit of the Hospital Complex of Ourense. The data collection was carried out by means of a self-administered questionnaire prepared "in-house" where several photographs of health professionals with and without tattoos were shown. A descriptive analysis of the variables and nonparametric tests were carried out to determine the potential association between the variables, using the statistical package SPSS 15.0®., Results: A total of 66 patients participated. Regardless of whether or not the study participants had tattoos themselves, they all scored the non-tattooed better than the tattooed health professionals, although these differences were less in the participants who had tattoos. No significant data were found in any of the cases., Conclusions: The participants of our study scored tattooed health professionals more poorly in terms of their professionalism, credibility, closeness and involvement compared to their counterparts without tattoos., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier España, S.L.U. o presente estudo resulta de uma pesquisa qualitativa exploratória que objetivou verificar e analisar como a beleza física é vista, e como sua presença/ausência afeta os trabalhadores no cotidiano do trabalho imaterial bancário.

This study explored the internalization of thinness aesthetic body model, and the muscularity and thinness concern, in four groups: two of men and two of women (gym and non-gym users). Specifically, it was explored the presence of symptoms of muscle dysmorphia in four groups, the muscularity -and body shape concern and internalization of thin ideals in the four groups were compared, and the relationship between variables for each group was analyzed. The sample included 467 men and women (169 gym users and 299 non-gym users) from 13 to 53 years-old, who completed three measures: The Influence of the Body Shape Model Questionnaire, the Body Shape Questionnaire, and the Drive for Muscularity Scale. The presence of symptoms of muscle dysmorphia in males gym users was 15% and lower than 3% in women gym users, as well as in -males and females non-gym users. The women gym users scored higher in the Body Shape Questionnaire compared to the men, and a positive and significant association was observed between the internalization of the body ideals, the thinness concern, and drive for muscularity. The relationship between Body Shape Questionnaire and Drive for Muscularity Scale can be interpreted as the desire in both groups of men and in the gym-users women to have both, muscularity and leanness in body; both ways lead to the practice of unhealthy eating behaviors.

Body image (BI) is a core feature for identity development; nevertheless amongst male population there is scarce empirical evidence. The aim of this study was to describe the experiences and meanings associated to the construction of BI in male, based on a methodological-qualitative approach. Participated 16 young men aged 15 to 25 years. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews and two focus groups, both analised by open codification. Meanings and procedures related to BI were classified in the following categories: physical appearance care, beauty ideal, self-concept and BI. Participants perceived differences in their physical appearance care compared with women, homosexuals and men of previous generations. In BI construction it is highlighted the drive for being attractive to the opposite sex by the increase of the muscle development. However body dissatisfaction do not represent a relevant topic for participants, since they display a pragmatic value of their BI, which may be an index of a new relationship with their own masculinity and BI that must be explored.
