Eighteenth-century female writers realized that single women were scorned and viewed with contempt. They tried to modify the negative stereotypes, found mainly in the work of male authors, by offering more attractive portraits of single, independent women. Elizabeth Hamilton dignified the figure of the "old maid" by creating the characters of Martha Goodwin, Maria Fielding and Mrs. Mason. The aim of this article is to analyse the similarities between Hamilton herself and Mrs. Fielding in Memoirs of Modern Philosophers (1800), as well as comment on how Hamilton used her fictional counterpart to explore her own ideas on women's education, marriage or spinsterhood. With a character like Mrs. Fielding, Hamilton not only created a positive role for old maids like herself but showed her readers that it was possible for an unmarried woman to have a varied, interesting, useful and fulfilled life. FRIENDSHIP , *PHILOSOPHY of emotions , *PERSUASION (Rhetoric) , *PATHOS - Abstract
This article endeavors to give an answer to the question whether and to what extent philia (friendship), as it is treated by Aristotle in Rhetoric II4, can be considered a genuine emotion as, for example, fear and anger are. Three anomalies are identified in the definition and the account of philia (and of the associated verb philein), which suggest a negative response to the question. However, these anomalies are analysed and explained in terms of the specific notes of philia in order to show that Rhetoric II4 does allow for a consideration of friendship as a genuine emotion. We are interested in certain narrative and thematic motives which are central to this age and this culture: the benevolence of the man of feeling, the fraud to which he is often a victim, the tragical seduction of a heroine by a libertine villain and the variant of the same plot, protagonized by the same type characters but with a happy ending. Such plots and types are central in Mackenzie and only through them is built the microcosmos of his novels and his most famous short stories. Consequently, Mackenzie’s work has been seen as quintessentially sentimental. In his themes and plots is comprehended a certain notion of virtue (we will use for it the concept of "idelogeme”) which characterizes the narrative of this age and this cultural trend.

This article considers an empirical approach to the relationships among three well known concepts: “Benevolence” (Schwartz), Solidarity and Resilience ("Subjective wellbeing scale" - SWB). The first concept refers to cultural values, the second one to social networks and the third to the ability to recover from crisis. The measurement of solidarity has been done from the point of view of supportive ties. The baseline hypothesis considers that the presence of a high value in Benevolence contributes to the involvements in solidarity networks. Participation in supportive relationships facilitates recovery from personal crisis. Using data from the European Social Survey (ESS6), we conclude from this structural analysis that the resilience reflected in a society is partly a consequence of the supportive networks shaped by the presence of benevolence values. AbstractBased on the literature on familiness and family climate, stakeholder management and the emotional dimension of trust, we analyze how family climate influences the orientation towards stakeholders in the decision-making process in family firms. Data were obtained from 374 members of the top management teams in 173 Spanish family firms. Results show that family climate directly influences stakeholder orientation. There is also an indirect influence due to the effect that family climate has on the dynamics of the top management team, particularly on the level of benevolence between its members. The study makes several contributions both to the literature on the different fields of reference and to the management of family firms.
