Abstract

The objective of this book is to highlight the need and value of imbuing the dynamic intersections between education, human rights and diversity with perspectives from the Global South. The chapters approach key intellectual conundrums of the day from a Global South perspective to reflect a credible scholarly footprint in Africa and in the SADC region. This is deemed timely considering that the field is deeply embedded in western, Eurocentric and overall Global North dominance. This book will provide a Southern perspective on education and human rights in diversity by unpacking each of the following key areas in the intersection between education, human rights and diversity from a Southern perspective: comparative international perspectives, citizenship education, human rights literacies, human rights education pedagogy, learner discipline in schools, aggression and bullying in schools, addressing human trafficking by means of human rights education, social justice, and the decolonisation of human rights and human rights education.

Abstract

This volume contains selected papers submitted to the 20th Jubilee Annual International Conference of the Bulgarian Comparative Education Society (BCES), conducted virtually in June 2022. The theme is focused on problems, discussions, changes, solutions, and challenges that have recently happened, and as well on various opportunities, prospects, and advantages that have been made available to all actors in the educational systems around the world--students, parents, teachers, administrators, psychologists, principals, faculty members, researchers, and policy makers at municipal, regional, and national level. The book includes 33 papers and starts with an introductory piece authored by Charl Wolhuter. Abstract

This volume contains a collection of selected papers submitted to the 19th Annual International Conference of the Bulgarian Comparative Education Society (BCES) held in June 2021. The 19th BCES Conference theme is "New Challenges to Education: Lessons from around the World." The book includes 40 papers written by 66 authors from 15 countries. The volume starts with an introductory piece co-authored by Zoltán Rónay and Ewelina K Niemczyk. The other 39 papers are divided into 6 parts representing the thematic sections: (1) Comparative and International Education & History of Education; (2) International Organizations and Education; (3) School Education: Policies, Innovations, Practices & Entrepreneurship; (4) Higher Education & Teacher Education and Training; (5) Law and Education; and (6) Research Education & Research Practice. The papers included in this year's conference volume outline a variety of challenges all actors in the education process (students, teachers, administrators, policy decision makers) at all levels of the education systems have recently faced. This volume contains selected papers submitted to the 18th Annual International Conference of the Bulgarian Comparative Education Society (BCES) held virtually in June 2020. The volume starts with an introductory piece on school reforms in Bulgaria from the 9th to the 21st century written by the keynote speakers Nikolay Popov and Marina Pironkova. The authors present the cornerstones of school reforms during the First, Second, and Third Bulgarian State. They also discuss various cultural, social and political factors determining school development in Bulgaria. 5. Teaching as a Career Choice: Comparing the Persistent Challenges in South Africa and Seychelles

Abstract

Both Seychelles and South Africa are experiencing serious challenges with regard to providing for the need to employ the required number and quality of teachers -- needs that are differentiated according to specific areas of competencies. In the paper, it is argued that each of the education systems of these two countries should have a well-planned recruitment strategy and particular attention should be paid to preparing a recruitment message that will attract possible candidates. Each of the education systems has been found to be lacking in several aspects of the recruitment message, such as the social status of the teaching profession and the comparison of teachers' remuneration. It has been found that South Africa is better placed than Seychelles in respect of only two factors, namely teacher training opportunities and better comparable remuneration packages of teachers in South Africa. It is clear that all of the stakeholders should be involved in the recruitment of teachers. Other developing education systems can learn from the experiences of the two countries.

6. Homeschooling in the BRICS Members States: A Comparative Study

Abstract

Homeschooling is an alternative method of teaching where parents take the responsibility of education and teach their children at home. This method of education is increasing worldwide. Various authorities around the world have taken note of this trend and recognized homeschooling as an alternative method of education in their legislation. The paper examines the educational policy and practice of homeschooling in the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) through a literature study, with the aim of comparing the five countries to hit. It also looks at what the BRICS countries can learn from each other regarding homeschooling. Most of the BRICS countries have education law that does not provide for homeschooling. In the countries where homeownership is legal, there are strict requirements that must be met. These requirements place a heavy burden on home school parents. However, it is clear from the investigation that homeschooling is increasing in the BRICS countries legally and illegally. There are also other similarities arising from the study.

Abstract

The paper substantiates the position that education and modern society, a 'society' in change because of present day developments in all the different sectors at local as well as national and international levels, are mutually dependent on each other. A modern national society expects its education system to provide in its differentiated education needs for their members to function effectively both in society and the international world. To effect this, society should, through the synchronizing participation of the coordinator, guide their education system according to the basic philosophy of education and should also formulate and prioritize their education needs. In addition, society should provide sufficient funding for providing for their education needs. The education system should apply its professional competencies to organize and strengthen the components and elements of that system in such a manner that the education needs can be provided for. Education should support the wellbeing of the community, but should not be regarded as the cure for every wrong. [For the complete Volume 16 proceedings, see ED586117.]

Abstract

MEd (Comparative and International Education), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus Countries globally are grappling with challenges such as food insecurity, poverty, inequality, economic growth, and climate change. The emergence of Covid-19 has exacerbated the aforesaid challenges and revealed the true nature of inequality in developing countries such as South Africa and Brazil. Now, more than ever, citizens globally require a type of education instilling knowledge, skills, behaviours and values that will enable them to take actions towards sustainable development. In other words, education for sustainable development (ESD) is necessary if the world is to mitigate current environmental, economic and social challenges. Higher educational institutions (HEIs) play a pivotal role in the quest for sustainable development, as these institutions develop future leaders, policymakers, business owners, and community leaders. The curriculum, research, extension activities and strategic planning of HEIs should be geared towards ESD, which has the potential to create a humane and fair world. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the effectiveness of HEIs in South Africa and Brazil in implementing ESD. In order to address the research objectives of this study, qualitative document analysis, following the principles of grounded theory, was employed, grounded in a postmodern research paradigm. The purpose of this study was distinctive, as scholarly literature is calling for more studies on the implementation of ESD in HEIs and in developing countries. In addition, the limited available research focuses on the environmental dimension of sustainability and sustainability in primary and secondary education, whereas less attention is devoted to higher education. This study addressed the latter. The findings reveal that South African and Brazilian HEIs have made considerable progress towards the implementation of ESD in their mission and vision statements, research, and extension activities. However, for improved implementation, ESD should be better inserted into the curricula and teaching practices of South African and Brazilian HEIs. In addition, there is an urgent need to provide training for educators and prospective teachers on sustainability-related pedagogical knowledge and competencies. The findings lead to the conclusion that the effective implementation of ESD will require a holistic approach of HEIs. This means that sustainability principles, knowledge and actions are clear in all academic activities and practices. Support from HEIs’ leaders is imperative in this regard. Masters
