The sample was composed of 239 overweight/obese adolescents aged between 15 and 18 years. Data was analyzed by means of a structural equation model, composed of obesity as the exogenous variable and five endogenous variables: BD, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), physical fitness (PF), readiness for behavior change (RBC), and eating habits. The model adjustment indicators were considered adequate (RMSEA = .03, [chi]2(df) = 124.6(94), CFI = .96, TLI = .95, GFI = .94). We identified a direct and negative relationship between obesity and BD (r = -.698, p < .001), and a direct relationship between these variables and HRQoL (Obesity: r = -.539, p < .001; BD: r = -.563, p < .001), PF (Obesity: r = -.424, p = .015; BD: r = -.393, p = .020), RBC (Obesity: r = -.445, p = .10; BD: r = -.448, p = .007), and eating habits (Obesity: r = .311, p = .032; BD: r = .363, p = .028). BD seems to play an important mediating role in health-related biopsychosocial parameters in adolescents. In addition, the negative consequences of BD on HRQoL, PF, eating habits and RBC appear to occur in a similar magnitude to those caused by obesity itself.

Background: For a long time, the penalty of imprisonment has been studied and criticized as ineffective in achieving the goals of resocialization and rehabilitation of offenders, and studies have associated incarceration with increased prevalence of disease. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization recommended decarceration as a prevention measure. The aim of this review was to analyze the effectiveness of non-exposure to incarceration in preventing COVID-19 and mitigating associated events. Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies comparing the adult general population (GP) and incarcerated population (IP). Results: We identified 1,334 publications without duplicates and extracted data from 22 studies. We found that COVID-19 incidence was 61% lower in the GP (RR = 0.39 [0.34, 0.45], p < 0.0001). Non-exposure to incarceration was associated with lower age- and sex-adjusted mortality (RR = 0.36, [0.27, 0.49], p < 0.0001). We did not find standardized data on age-adjusted case fatality. The hospitalized GP was older and showed a higher rate of obesity than the hospitalized IP; however, no statistically significant differences were found between the populations for admission to intensive care (RR = 0,91 [0.74, 1.13], p = 0.41) and hospital mortality (RR = 0.81 [0.54, 1.23], p = 0.32). Prevalence of the use of invasive mechanical ventilation was 23% lower in the GP (RR = 0.77 [0.70, 0.84, p < 0.0001). Conclusion: Non-exposure to incarceration can be a strategy for preventing the spread of COVID-19 and reduces COVID-19 mortality in younger populations. Despite differences in age distribution and presence of comorbidities among the hospitalized GP and IP, we did not find any statistically significant differences between the two populations across most of the hospital-related outcomes. These findings should be interpreted with caution because it was not possible to determine a cause-and-effect relationship between the COVID-19 outcomes and exposure to incarceration. As far as we know, no report uses the Swenson transanal endorectal pull-through technique in an animal model. Our objective is to describe the use of this technique as an experimental model for training and research purposes. Ten Norfolk hybrid rabbits were randomly selected from our experimental laboratory, with a mean weight of 3539.3 (± 678.4) g. Neither colon preparation nor fast were used before the procedures. The surgical technique was based on the description performed by Levitt et al. (2013, J Pediatr Surg. 2013;48(11):2289–2295). Information related to the surgical procedures and the clinical evolution in the postoperative period were recorded and analyzed. There were no deaths or severe complications. The anesthetic and the surgical times were significantly higher for the first three animals of the experiment. Our animal model proved adequate to perform the transanal endorectal Swenson pull-through technique, allowing the training of surgical skills through a model similar to the human, with few anesthetic complications and good postoperative evolution, including postoperative follow-up. We believe that it will serve as a learning tool in many institutions that are continuously searching for improved new techniques and will support new researches in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Peanut seeds are harvested at different development stages (early and late) due to their uneven maturation. At the time of harvest, approximately 30% of the seeds are still immature, meaning they are not completely filled with compounds (e.g., oil and minerals) and exhibit reduced vigor. Hypothetically, these compounds can be detected as a "chemical fingerprinting" to classify seed maturation stages. Here, we investigated whether non-destructive techniques such as benchtop nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), and energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) can identify chemical patterns unique to mature seeds with superior vigor. Field-grown seeds were classified into early (R5 and R6) and late (R7, R8, and R9) stages. Seed weight, germination, vigor, H2O2, and MDA (oxidative stress) were analyzed. Oil, potassium (K), and calcium (Ca) were measured digitally using spectroscopy techniques. We found that: (i) oxidative stress and K levels were higher in seeds from the early stages; (ii) seed oil and Ca were proportional to high-vigor seedlings and successful plant establishment in the field; and (iii) the seed chemical composition could be identified autonomously with 87% to 100% accuracy. In conclusion, LIBS, ED-XRF, and NMR technologies can effectively screen peanut seeds with superior vigor through "chemical fingerprinting". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the high prevalence of cannabis consumption, there is limited information about cannabis based on scientific evidence available and targeted toward young adults, especially considering accessible language and ease of access. The present study aimed to develop the proof of concept of a chatbot for the dissemination of evidence and scientific information about cannabis, focused on a young adult audience. The proof of concept involved stages of literature review, conversation flow development, content evaluation through a panel of experts (n = 10) and usability analysis using a sample of potential users (young adults, n = 10). The chatbot developed presents information on epidemiology, toxicology, acute and chronic effects of cannabis use, information on cannabis use disorder, and the use of cannabinoids for medicinal purposes. The content evaluation through the Health Education Content Validation Instrument concluded that the tool was considered to have a good structure and content (Content Validity Index > 0,78; overall score = 9.0/10.0). The tool also proved to be functional and highly usable according to the analysis with the System Usability Scale (overall usability score = 9.2/10.0). Digital strategies such as chatbots can help in health education and scientific communication within stigmatized areas, such as the consumption of psychoactive substances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research comparing sexual homicide (SH) and non-sexual homicide (NSH) has been rare outside North America and Europe and has contributed to addressing whether SH is primarily a sexual or homicide offence or a hybrid. This case–control study compared 142 SH and 142 NSH cases from Australia and New Zealand. Bivariate analyses indicated SH offenders more often had sexual problems, lacked intimacy, and appeared more prosocial, had less serious mental health problems, with lifestyles giving opportunities to access victims. Planning rather than reacting, sexual fantasies and arousal, time, and isolation to interact with victims privately, control of victims and crime scenes, lack of remorse, reliving the experience later, preventing detection, and more intrusive, intimate, and sadistic interactions characterised SH offences. Victims were more likely to be strangers, unrelated, single, and living alone. We developed multivariate models to predict SH, with the final model including: offender single, with a sexual disorder, but not a substance use disorder or major mental illness; offence long in duration, with expressive physical violence and unusual or ritualistic features, against a stranger, in an isolated location. These results are consistent with previous studies and indicate SH is different from NSH, supporting differential practice with SH. However, the findings could primarily reflect the over representation of sexual sadism in SH and the over representation of intimate partner victims in NSH.
