Minerals occur in all foodstuffs as well as in milk and dairy products. The mineral content in milk is influenced by many factors ranging from environmental conditions during pasture, feeding, breeding, stage of lactation and climate to post-milking handling, transportation and processing. The aim of the study was to assess whether the intakes comply with Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA), Adequate Intakes (AIs) or Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (ULs) for essential elements. Milk samples from different producers and with different fat content were purchased from Zagreb’s market four times in year 2007 and analysed. Concentrations of ten minerals (Ca, P, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni, K and Na) were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Mean values of mineral contents were in range with the literature data. The daily intakes of these minerals by school children selected in age-gender groups (school children 8-9 years old and adolescents 15-18 years old) through milk consumption were also estimated. The average daily intake of essential minerals ranged from a minimum of 1.36 % of manganese up to 35.27 for phosphorus, irrespective of age and gender of children.

Geographical distribution pattern of centenarians in China runs counter to the global trend, and centenarians are mainly distributed in low-latitude South China but rarely in high-latitude North China. To investigate the effect of the elemental content of rice on the differences between the longevity areas and the non-longevity areas in China, the multielement concentrations in 84 rice samples collected from 28 counties/cities were measured, of which 37 belonged to the longevity areas in South China (SLs), 36 belonged to non-longevity areas in South China (SNLs), and 11 belonged to non-longevity areas in North China (NNLs). The concentrations of 29 different elements (Ca, K, Mg, Na, P, S, Se, As, Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Sr, Ti, Zn Cd, Co, Li, Pb, Tl, Cs, Ga, In, Rb, U and Bi) in rice samples were determined by ICP-OES, ICP-MS and HG-AFS. Notably, the concentrations of macroelements in SLs rice samples (3682.92 mg/kg) were significantly higher than those of SNLs (3046.62 mg/kg) and NNLs (2590.38 mg/kg) (p < 0.05). The concentrations of essential microelements in rice samples of SLs (38.87 mg/kg) and NNLs (41.79 mg/kg) were not significantly different, but both significantly higher than those of SNLs (31.91 mg/kg) (p < 0.05). Significant differences were also found in the concentrations of K, Mg, Na, P, S, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Tl, In and Cs in rice among SLs, SNLs and NNLs (p < 0.05). The rice samples of SLs had the characteristic of higher concentrations of K, Mg, P, Mn and Ni. Thus, rice intake in SLs provided greater proportions of the dietary mineral requirements than those in SNLs and NNLs. Besides, the concentrations of K, Mg, P, Ni and Ti in rice, especially K, were demonstrated to be significantly positively correlated with lifespan indicators (p < 0.05), while the concentrations of Ga, Cd, In and U in rice were negatively correlated with lifespan indicators. Our findings are expected to provide a basis for reasonable dietary mineral element intakes and promote understanding of the relationships between natural environment and regional longevity in China. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the dietary intakes of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and manganese (Mn) and investigate their correlation with blood pressure and blood lipids. Targeting 258 healthy men and women, blood pressure was measured, and blood samples were collected to analyze serum lipids, and then the intakes of seven minerals were assessed through a food intake survey for 3 days using a 24-h recall method. The average age of the men and women was 49.55 and 49.19, respectively. The daily energy intake of the men was 1,830.57 kcal, which was significantly higher than that of women, 1,476.23 kcal ( p < 0.001). The mineral intake of the subjects was as follows: 450.95 mg/day for Ca, 915.24 mg/day for P, 279.23 mg/day for Mg, 12.60 mg/day for Fe, 8.25 mg/day for Zn, 1.23 mg/day for Cu, and 4.22 mg/day for Mn. These accounted for 63.83, 130.76, 90.74, 129.75, 97.50, 154.49, and 113.50 % of adequate intake or the recommended intake of each mineral, respectively. Subjects who did not satisfy the estimated average requirement were 74.00 % for Ca, 63.18 % for Mg, and 41.86 % for Zn. After adjusting for age, sex, BMI, and energy intake, Mg intake had a negative correlation with systolic blood pressure (SBP), and Cu intake had a significant negative correlation with SBP and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). Also, Mn intake was negatively correlated with DBP, serum total cholesterol, and triglycerides. Thus, it is concluded that the dietary intakes of Mg, Cu, and Mn may play an important role in controlling blood pressure and lipids in Korean adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The objective of this study is to analyze the minerals of different black tea infusions brewed in different pots. Material and Methods: Eight different samples of black tea were used in this study. Six mineral contents (Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, Na and K) obtained by duplicate analysis of 64 samples (8 different samples -- 4 pots -- 2 infusions each) that were brewed two times under the same conditions in different pots (stainless steel, aluminum, porcelain and glass) were analysed. Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn contents in infusions were determined by atomic absorption spectrometer; Na and K contents were determined by flame photometer. The differences in mineral contents of infusions brewed in different pots were analyzed by analysis of variance (F-test) for randomized block design. Results: Fe, Mn, Zn and Na contents of infusions were found to be significantly different whereas no statistically significant differences were observed in Cu and K contents between brewing pots. The highest amount of mineral found in infusions was K. Fe contents were found to be similar in infusions brewed in stainless steel and glass pots which is less than the tea brewed in aluminum and porcelain pots. There was no significant difference in the Zn content of infusions brewed in aluminum and porcelain pots, however these were significantly higher than those in stainless steel and glass pots. The Mn content of tea brewed in glass pot was significantly lower as compared to the other three pots. The Na content was found highest in tea brewed in porcelain pot, and lowest in glass pot. Conclusion: Tea is an important source of some minerals especially for K. The mineral content of tea may differ according to the pot in which it is brewed.
