In this study, a Machine Learning (ML)-based approach is proposed to enhance the computational efficiency of a particular method that was previously proposed by the authors for passive localization of radar emitters based on multipath exploitation with a single receiver in Electronic Support Measures (ESM) systems. The idea is to utilize a ML model on a dataset consisting of useful features obtained from the priori-known operational environment. To verify the applicability and computational efficiency of the proposed approach, simulations are performed on the pseudo-realistic scenes to create the datasets. Well-known regression ML models are trained and tested on the created datasets. The performance of the proposed approach is then evaluated in terms of localization accuracy and computational speed. Based on the results, it is verified that the proposed approach is computationally efficient and implementable in radar detection applications on the condition that the operational environment is known prior to implementation.

Abstract Through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI) has attracted a great deal of attention in several sensitive applications, including rescue missions and military operations. Notwithstanding its broad range of applications, TWRI suffers from path-loss because distant targets experience more attenuation of signal power than those closer to the transceiver. This challenge may lead to missed targets with important information necessary for analysis and informed decision making. Responding to the challenge, we have developed a signal model with an effective path-loss compensator incorporating a free space exponent. Furthermore, multipath exploitation and compressive sensing techniques were employed to develop an effective algorithm for isolating residual clutter that may corrupt real targets. The proposed signal model integrates contributions from the front wall, multipath returns, and path-loss. Compared with the state-of-the-art model under the same experimental conditions, simulation results show that the proposed model achieves improved signal-to-clutter ratio, relative clutter peak, and probability of detection by 13.1%, 17.4% and 33.6%, respectively, suggesting that our model can represent the scene more accurately.

Abstract Traditionally, radar‐based localisation systems are designed to deal with targets in line‐of‐sight (LOS) scenarios. However, the performance of those radar systems is limited by multipath echoes reflected from non‐line‐of‐sight (NLOS) targets and walls in the urban areas. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in multipath exploitation methods aided by urban environmental knowledge. Based on the exploitation of space diversity provided by the multipath effect, this article proposes a novel two‐stage localisation method using a single monostatic radar via association of multipath time‐of‐arrivals (TOAs). In the offline stage, reference TOA data at different locations is generated by a ray‐tracing method to avoid the heterogeneity of multipath propagation at different locations, assuming that the environment information is completely known prior. In the online stage, the TOA set of multipath echoes from the target is estimated by a sparse reconstruction method to achieve super‐resolution rather than the matched filter. Then based on the finite‐set statistics (FISST) theory, a grid‐based multi‐observation data association (GMODA) algorithm is present as the likelihood function of the multipath measurement given a candidate location, which is followed by a maximum likelihood estimation to derive the location of the target. Furthermore, the global nearest neighbour approximation of GMODA is introduced to avoid combinatorial explosion in the association algorithm. Simulation and experiment results on a single antenna millimetre‐wave radar in various scenarios show that the proposed method achieves high localisation accuracy in both LOS and NLOS conditions while maintaining low computational cost at the same time. The presented results suggest that our method can be applied to target localisation applications in the complex urban environment.

This paper investigates the design of waveforms for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems that can exploit multipath returns to enhance target detection performance. By making reasonable use of multipath information in the waveform design, MIMO radar can effectively improve the signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) of the receiver under a constant modulus (CM) constraint. However, optimizing the waveform design under these constraints is a challenging non-linear and non-convex problem that cannot be easily solved using traditional methods. To overcome this challenge, we proposed a novel waveform design method for MIMO radar in multipath scenarios based on deep learning. Specifically, we leveraged the powerful nonlinear fitting ability of neural networks to solve the non-convex optimization problem. First, we constructed a deep residual network and transform the CM constraint into a phase sequence optimization problem. Next, we used the constructed waveform optimization design problem as the loss function of the network. Finally, we used the adaptive moment estimation (Adam) optimizer to train the network. The performance of classic radar geometry based on the line-of-sight (LOS) signal transmitted from radar to the target in the free space is affected by multipath echoes in urban areas, where non-line-of-sight (NLOS) signals reflected by obstacles are received by the radar. Based on prior information of the urban situation, this article proposes a novel two-stage localization algorithm with multipath exploitation in a dense clutter environment. In the offline stage, multipath propagation parameters of uniformly distributed samples in the radar field of view are predicted by the ray-tracing technique. In the online stage, a rough location of the target is estimated by the maximum similarity between measurements and the predicted parameters of reference samples at different locations. The similarity is described by the likelihood between measurements and the predicted multipath parameters with respect to all possible associated hypotheses. A gating threshold is derived to exclude less likely hypotheses and reduce the computational burden. The accurate target location is acquired by a non-linear least squares (NLS) optimization of the associated multipath components. Simulation results in various noise conditions show that the proposed method provides robust and accurate target localization results under dense clutter conditions, and the offline pre-calculation of ray-tracing ensures the real-time performance of the proposed localization algorithm. The root mean square error (RMSE) of simulation results shows the advantage of the proposed method over the existing method. It is quite challenging for through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI) to achieve high-resolution ghost-free imaging with limited measurements in an indoor multipath scenario. In this paper, a novel high-resolution TWRI algorithm with the exploitation of the target clustered structure in a hierarchical Bayesian framework is proposed. More specifically, an extended spike-and-slab clustered prior is imposed to statistically encourage the cluster formations in both downrange and crossrange domains of the target region, and a generative model of the proposed approach is provided. Then, a Markov Chain Monte Carol (MCMC) sampler is used to implement the posterior inference. Compared to other state-of-the-art algorithms, the proposed nonparametric Bayesian algorithm can preserve underlying target clustered properties and effectively suppress these isolated spurious scatterers without any prior information on targets themselves, such as sizes, shapes, and numbers. Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) target detection utilizing multipath plays an important role in anti-terrorism, urban warfare, indoor rescue and intelligent driving. In this paper, an imaging method based on single-channel ultra-wideband (UWB) radar and dual-view observation is proposed for detecting NLOS targets. First, the cause of producing ghosts from a single view in a previous study is analyzed in detail. On this basis, with focusing on dual-view observation, the ghost problem is handled at two levels. From the level of the radar echo, path partition is conducted with the utilization of dual-view observation, solving the problem of uneven energy among multipaths. After that, two images are generated by multipath imaging, respectively, which reduces the accumulation of ghosts. From the level of the image, owing to the distinct distribution of ghosts between the imaging result, the ghosts at different locations are eliminated by image fusion. Experimental results demonstrate that compared with single view and direct multipath imaging, the approach based on dual-view observation successfully eliminates most ghosts while retaining the targets in both single-target and double-targets scenarios, which verifies the effectiveness of the method. This letter considers the robust spatial-filter design problem for multipath exploitation. The imprecise multipath return results in the output Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise-Ratio (SINR) performance deterioration of traditional beamformers. We focus on enhancing the worst-case output SINR over the uncertain Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) sector. To achieve robustness against covariance matrix errors caused by the desired signals contamination, we reconstruct the Interference-Noise Covariance Matrix (INCM) from Sample Covariance Matrix (SCM) based on the proposed residual noise components removal idea. Then, we cast the robust spatial-filter design problem as a max-min optimization problem, aiming at improving the worst-case output SINR. The filter vector is finally obtained via semi-definite relaxation followed by randomization synthesis. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The positioning of indoor electronic devices is an essential part of human–computer interaction, and the accuracy of positioning affects the level of user experience. Most existing methods for RF-based device localization choose to ignore or remove the impact of multipath effects. However, exploiting the multipath effect caused by the complex indoor environment helps to improve the model's localization accuracy. In response to this question, this paper proposes a multipath-assisted localization (MAL) model based on millimeter-wave radar to achieve the localization of indoor electronic devices. The model fully considers the help of the multipath effect when describing the characteristics of the reflected signal and precisely locates the target position by using the MAL area formed by the reflected signal. At the same time, for the situation where the radar in the traditional Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) mode cannot obtain the 3D spatial position information of the target, the advantage of the MAL model is that the 3D information of the target can be obtained after the mining process of the multipath effect. Furthermore, based on the original hardware, it can achieve a breakthrough in angular resolution. For the reason of target multipaths ambiguities, localization for hidden moving target due to lack of line of sight (LOS) path in urban environments is a hard task. To handle this problem we propose a localization algorithm based on the internal connection of these multipaths in this paper. First, we establish an electromagnetic (EM) propagation model based on the characters of the measured signal received by an L-band single-input single-output (SISO) ultra-wideband (UWB) radar. After that, the model-based target localization algorithm is proposed based on a times-of-arrival (TOAs) association method, which is able to match the measured TOAs with the corresponding EM propagation paths correctly. The proposed method can cope with the case while some missing detections of TOAs happen. Simulation and experimental results ultimately validate the robustness and the state-of-the-art performance of the proposed algorithm.

This paper deals with the multiple targets localization problem via multi-channel ultra-wideband (UWB) imaging radar non-line-of-sight (NLOS) signal processing. A novel matching-based radar imaging algorithm is proposed to obtain the positions of multiple targets in the L-shaped corner scenario with complex multipath ghost signals. Firstly, a multipath propagation model for the multiple targets scenario is established. Then the positions of the actual multipath ghosts are extracted from the radar image, and the candidate targets corresponding to these multipath ghosts are derived. Secondly, the ellipse-cross-localization method is proposed to obtain the positions of the candidate multipath ghosts, followed by two defined matching factors to measure the similarity between actual and candidate multipath ghosts. According to the similarity, decision rules are designed to determine the actual targets. Compared with the localization algorithm based on one-dimensional range profile, the proposed algorithm can effectively cope with the cases of multiple targets, even in the cases of rough walls and noise. Multipath exploitation with compressive sensing (CS) has been successfully applied in through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI) given prior knowledge of the room geometry. However, in most practical applications and critical missions, the geometry of the room is not known. In this paper dynamic wall pursuit algorithm is proposed to simultaneously recover the room geometry and image the scene behind the wall. We demonstrate that moving targets increase the wall reconstruction accuracy. The algorithm exploits the fact that wrong wall positions populate the reconstructed image with false targets. It makes use of the moving targets in the scene to increase the certainty of the detected wall positions. Simulated results show the effectiveness of this method even at low SNR values.

Detection and localization in urban environments is a very recent radar problem. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of detecting and locating targets not in direct line of sight (NLOS) areas with a single portable radar by exploiting multipath returns. We propose two algorithms, which handle the information provided by multipath returns in different ways to detect and estimate the NLOS target position. We also present an original method to select the number of paths to take into account in the algorithms in order to maximize detection probabilities. Numerical results show good efficiency of the proposed algorithms for problems of both detection and localization. We show that applying these algorithms improves detection performance compared to a classic matched filter in a typical urban scenario. Experimental results on a real dataset allow us to validate our multipath model in urban environments, and in particular to show that it is possible to retrieve the target location even with rough knowledge of the scene geometry. The problem of detecting point like targets over a glistening surface is investigated in this manuscript, and the design of an optimal waveform through a two-step process for a multipath exploitation radar is proposed. In the first step, a non-adaptive waveform is transmitted and a constrained Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) detector is deduced at reception which exploits multipath returns in the range cell under test by modelling the target echo as a superposition of the direct plus the multipath returns. Under the hypothesis of heterogeneous environments, thus by assuming a compound-Gaussian distribution for the clutter return, this latter is estimated in the range cell under test through the secondary data, which are collected from the out-of-bin cells. The Fixed Point Estimate (FPE) algorithm is applied in the clutter estimation, then used to design the adaptive waveform for transmission in the second step of the algorithm, in order to suppress the clutter coming from the adjacent cells. The proposed GLRT is also used at the end of the second transmission for the final decision. Extensive performance evaluation of the proposed detector and adaptive waveform for various multipath scenarios is presented. The performance analysis prove that the proposed method improves the Signal-to-Clutter Ratio (SCR) of the received signal, and the detection performance with multipath exploitation.

Radar target detection has a wide range of applications in the military and civilian remote sensing fields; in particular, the target detection in multipath environments has attracted many scholars’ attention in recent years. The abundant multipath signals severely interfere with the detection performance and accuracy of parameter estimation of traditional algorithms. Under Gaussian white noise environments, this letter proposes an adaptive time reversal (TR) waveform covariance matrix (WCM) design method with multipath exploitation to improve the maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver in multipath environments. This equivalently improves the detection probability. The proposed two-stage algorithm firstly adapts the time-reversal echo to construct a multipath information matrix with a Hermitian structure. Secondly, the letter transforms the maximized SNR problem into semidefinite programming (SDP), which is constrained by a constant total transmit power. Consequently, the waveform covariance matrix is obtained by solving semidefinite programming. Simulation experiments verify the adaptability and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

This paper considers the multipath modeling and exploitation problems for multiple input multiple output through-the-wall imaging radar. A multipath propagation model referring to two parallel walls is established, and the position distribution characteristics of the multipath ghosts in radar image are analyzed by means of geometric approximation. Therein, we find a feature that the locations of the walls can be obtained using the geometric relationship between the true target and its multipath ghosts. After utilizing constant false alarm rate technique and clustering approach, the coordinates of the multipath ghosts and the concealed target are achieved, and the positions of the two walls are obtained. Finally, simulation and experimental results validate the correctness of the multipath model and the validity of the multipath-exploitation-based wall localization method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Localization using the time-of-arrival (ToA) of a wideband signal has the potential to achieve high accuracy, thereby making it a promising choice for a variety of applications. However, a major challenge impacting localization accuracy is multipath propagation, i.e., the existence of indirect paths from a target to an anchor (transceiver) via one or more obstacles present in the environment. In this paper, we provide an overview of the techniques proposed in the literature to analyze and address the effects of multipath on localization accuracy. For this purpose, we first cast the localization of one or more targets as a maximum a priori estimation problem, where the distribution of the amplitudes and ToAs of the indirect paths serves as a prior. Under this framework, we show that multipath can either be a blessing or a curse depending on the extent of prior knowledge available about the multipath statistics. Specifically, in the absence of any indirect path information, only the direct paths that go straight from a target to an anchor contain useful position information; in other words, multipath negatively impacts localization performance. Thus, in this case, it is important to detect the anchors having line-of-sight to the target(s), and we review the techniques reported in the literature to solve this problem. On the other hand, if complete indirect path information is available (i.e., the propagation paths of all the multipath components are known), then each indirect path is equivalent to a direct path from a virtual anchor, and hence, the spatial diversity offered by multipath can be exploited for improving localization accuracy. This paper presents a multipath exploitation approach for defect imaging in thin-walled structures using Lamb waves under the sparse reconstruction framework. An image of the defects in the region of interest is obtained by inverting a multipath propagation model via group sparse reconstruction. This permits accurate imaging of regions close to the structure boundary without the introduction of ‘false’ defects or ghosts. In urban target localization, the presence of walls creates virtual radars (VRs), which can be exploited to aid in localization process. The fact that multipath changes with the radar locations, which are referred to as aspect dependence property, enable us to find a radar location, which reduces wall uncertainties. This paper proposes single-antenna target localization in an enclosed structure taking advantage of VRs. Using ultra-wideband signals, we can resolve the target returns and estimate the correct location by solving monostatic loci at real and VR locations. A hybrid technique is proposed to enhance the localization performance of a time difference of arrival (TDOA) deployed in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) suburban scenario. The idea was to use Machine Learning framework on the dataset, produced by the ray tracing simulation, and the Channel Impulse Response estimation from the real signal received by each sensor. Conventional localization techniques mitigate errors trying to avoid NLOS measurements in processing emitter position, while the proposed method uses the multipath fingerprint information produced by ray tracing (RT) simulation together with calibration emitters to refine a Machine Learning engine, which gives an extra layer of information to improve the emitter position estimation. The ray-tracing fingerprints perform the target localization embedding all the reflection and diffraction in the propagation scenario. A validation campaign was performed and showed the feasibility of the proposed method, provided that the buildings can be appropriately included in the scenario description.

Compressive sensing (CS)-based multipath exploitation has been successfully applied to stationary indoor scenes in through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI). The benefits of using significantly reduced data are also desirable for moving targets. Hence, we bring CS based multipath exploitation to the non-stationary target domain and are able to treat moving and stationary targets simultaneously. In general, multipath propagation has adverse effects on the image quality. However, by using proper modeling, multipath can be used to one’s advantage. In this paper, we apply CS to both stationary and moving targets under interior wall scatterings. Assuming knowledge of the room geometry, we develop an effective method that solves the inverse problem of joint localization and velocity estimation of the targets in an indoor multipath environment from a few measurements. We also propose a computationally inexpensive scheme that first locates the targets using sparse reconstruction and subsequently estimates the velocity vectors. In this letter, we propose a new algorithm to determine the position of the sidewalls by exploiting the multipath echoes of a target bounced from the sidewalls, which is useful to obtain the building layout, determine the relative position of the target in the room, and remove the higher order multipath ghosts for a through-wall tracking radar. Specifically, we first extract the 1-D trajectories of the real target and the multipath ghosts in each receive channel, based on the local maximum values extraction method and the 1-D Kalman filter. Second, by exploiting the principle of the first-order multipath echoes, the position of the sidewall is computed in each frame. In addition, the sidewall position can be obtained by averaging the coordinates of the target and the ghost in the presence of the second-order multipath echoes. We derive a multipath model for sensing through walls using radars. The model considers propagation through a front wall and specular reflections at interior walls in an enclosed room under surveillance. The model is derived such that additional eigenrays can be easily accommodated. A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system is considered, and stationary or slowly moving targets are assumed. The focused downrange and crossrange locations of multipath ghosts are established and validated using numerical, as well as experimental data. The multipath model permits an implementation of a multipath exploitation algorithm, which associates, as well as maps, each target ghost back to its corresponding true target location. In doing so, the proposed algorithm improves the radar system performance by aiding in ameliorating the false positives in the original SAR image, as well as increasing the signal-to-clutter ratio at the target locations, culminating in enhanced behind the wall target detection and localization. We propose a simple three-dimensional (3-D) direction-finding system that exploits multipath reflections close to the sensors to improve performance by increasing the effective array aperture. Such close-range multipath reflections can originate, for example, from parts of the platform on which the sensor is mounted. Our system is inspired by the human auditory system where multipath reflections from the external ear (pinna) enable 3-D direction finding. To demonstrate the advantage of exploiting multipath reflections, we consider a simple example of a passive system with only one sensor and two nearby reflectors. First, we present a parametric measurement model and then compute the asymptotic Cramer-Rio bound on the 3-D direction estimates for a stochastic source signal of unknown parametrized spectrum. We provide a few numerical examples to illustrate our analytical results. We find that for this example additional reflectors and a wider source spectrum can achieve better direction estimates. The problem of detecting point like targets over a glistening surface is investigated in this manuscript, and the design of an optimal waveform through a two-step process for a multipath exploitation radar is proposed. In the first step, a non-adaptive waveform is transmitted and a constrained Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) detector is deduced at reception which exploits multipath returns in the range cell under test by modelling the target echo as a superposition of the direct plus the multipath returns. Under the hypothesis of heterogeneous environments, thus by assuming a compound-Gaussian distribution for the clutter return, this latter is estimated in the range cell under test through the secondary data, which are collected from the out-of-bin cells. The Fixed Point Estimate (FPE) algorithm is applied in the clutter estimation, then used to design the adaptive waveform for transmission in the second step of the algorithm, in order to suppress the clutter coming from the adjacent cells. The proposed GLRT is also used at the end of the second transmission for the final decision. Extensive performance evaluation of the proposed detector and adaptive waveform for various multipath scenarios is presented. The performance analysis prove that the proposed method improves the Signal-to-Clutter Ratio (SCR) of the received signal, and the detection performance with multipath exploitation. Radar target detection has a wide range of applications in the military and civilian remote sensing fields; in particular, the target detection in multipath environments has attracted many scholars' attention in recent years. The abundant multipath signals severely interfere with the detection performance and accuracy of parameter estimation of traditional algorithms. Under Gaussian white noise environments, this letter proposes an adaptive time reversal (TR) waveform covariance matrix (WCM) design method with multipath exploitation to improve the maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver in multipath environments. This equivalently improves the detection probability. The proposed two-stage algorithm firstly adapts the time-reversal echo to construct a multipath information matrix with a Hermitian structure. Secondly, the letter transforms the maximized SNR problem into semidefinite programming (SDP), which is constrained by a constant total transmit power. Consequently, the waveform covariance matrix is obtained by solving semidefinite programming. Simulation experiments verify the adaptability and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
