Dispersed settlement areas (e.g., Slovenia) result in lower development of fixed public transport lines and thereby car-dependent lifestyles. To avoid congestion inside the cities and on highways in these areas, shared mobility modes e.g., carpooling, is one of the effective solutions, increasing the occupancy of personal vehicles. However, passenger pick-up and drop-off locations still remain an important challenge for carpool users and transport officials. As a collection point for carpooling, we can consider “park and pool (P+P)” lots near highways’ interchanges. This study aims to examine the impacts of P+P lots near interchanges on carpooling behavior of users and on improving sustainable mobility on highways in such dispersed settlement areas. To do so, we employed a field survey, incorporated the P+P lots into the mode choice model, and examined different scenarios using the macroscopic transport model. It is found that factors such as travel cost, public transport service limitations, and improved parking facilities impact highway users’ mode choice. Sixty percent of respondents are willing to leave their car in P+P lots near interchanges. The results also show that P+P lots can increase the number of carpool users. It causes remarkable savings in terms of operating and external costs because of the reduction in total distance and time travelled by personal vehicles as well as parking demand reduction in cities. At the moment, especially in Central Europe, it is easier to invest in a “demand reduction” infrastructure than to increase the capacity of infrastructure. Therefore, P+P lots could be a “win-win” situation for both users and operators.

Due to the large number of motor vehicles in cities there is an increasing need for planning parking systems. This problem is particularly pronounced in the cities of Southeast Europe, where the implementation of sustainable transport planning has only just begun. The current traditional approach to solving the problem of parking in urban centres results in number of other problems that affect the sustainability of the entire transport system of urban areas.In addition to having a negative impact on the transport system, parking significantly impairs the quality of life of citizens through increased pollution from emissions and noise caused by frequent cruising for free parking space. The negative impact of traffic and parking system on the life quality has also been recognized by the European Union which through new regulations is putting increasing emphasis on reducing emissions and noise from the traffic system.

The paper presents the results of a study on parking standards conducted among the experts involved in developing municipal spatial plans, along with an overview of parking standards in more than 50 municipalities in Slovenia. The study shows that, although parking problems pose a considerable challenge in towns and cities, the experts’ awareness of how to use parking standards to meet these challenges, is still not sufficiently developed., Rad predstavlja rezultate studije o standardima parkiranja provedene između stručnjaka uključenih u razvoj prostornih planova općina te daje pregled standarda parkiranja u više od 50 općina u Sloveniji. Unatoč činjenici da je problem parkirnih površina u gradovima velik izazov na koji treba odgovoriti, ova studija pokazuje da stručnjaci još uvijek nemaju dovoljno razvijenu svijest o načinima rješavanja tih problema.

Prihvatljivost, iskoristivost i gospodarska uspješnost garaža ovisi o kvaliteti njihova projektiranja. Često se primjenjuju samo minimalni zahtjevi ili čak i manji. Nakon početka rada garaže najčešći problemi koji se pojavljuju su: dva parkirna mjesta potrebna za jedno (veće) vozilo, ogrebotine na vozilima i stupovima te dugi redovi čekanja na ulazu i/ili izlazu. U radu se analiziraju najvažniji parametri projektiranja u garažama: veličina parkirnog mjesta, mogućnost manevriranja na parkirnim mjestima i trakovima, raspored stupova, visina prolaza, nagibi i zavoji rampi, nagibi podova garaža te duljina reda čekanja na ulaznim rampama., The acceptability, usability, and economic success of garages depend on the quality of their design. Only minimum or even lower requirements are often applied. Problems most frequently encountered after the start of operation are: two spaces needed for one (bigger) car, scratches on cars and pillars, and long queues at entrance/exit. Main design parameters for garages are analysed in the paper: manoeuvrability in parking spaces and lanes, column grid, headroom, slopes and curves of ramps, garage floor slopes, and waiting time at garage entrance barriers.
