This work presents a novel method for motion sensor placement within smart homes. Using recordings from 3D depth cameras within six real homes, clusters are created with the resident’s tracked location. The resulting clusters identify the possible position of a sensor and its field of view. By using a sequence of clusters as input to a Recurrent Neural Network, we evaluate our method on the task of activity recognition and prediction. These results are compared to using sensor events as input sequence, from motion sensors that were installed empirically in the same homes. Different clustering methods are investigated and all outperform the installed motion sensors, achieving a significant increase of prediction accuracy and F1-score.

Forecasting has extreme importance in industry due to the numerous competitive advantages that it provides, allowing to foresee what might happen and adjust management decisions accordingly. Industries increasingly use sensors, which allow for large-scale data collection. Big datasets enable training, testing and application of complex predictive algorithms based on machine learning models. The present paper focuses on predicting values from sensors installed on a pulp paper press, using data collected over three years. The variables analyzed are electric current, pressure, temperature, torque, oil level and velocity. The results of XGBoost and artificial neural networks, with different feature vectors, are compared. In camera sensor networks (CSNs), in order to better identify the point, full-view problem requires capture any facing direction of target (point or intruder), and its coverage prediction and sensor density issues are more complicated. At present, a lot of research supposes that a large number of homogeneous camera sensors are randomly distributed in a bounded square monitoring region to obtain full-view rate which is close to 1. In this paper, we deduce the sensor density prediction model in heterogeneous deployed CSNs with arbitrary full-view rate. Aiming to reduce the influence of boundary effect, we introduce the concepts of expanded monitoring region and maximum detection area. Besides, in order to verify the performance of the proposed sensor density model, we carried out different scenarios in simulation experiments to verify the theoretical results. Strong electromagnetic fields such as those generated by power stations and transmission lines cause disturbances that affect the on-board sensors of an autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (AUAVs) and may lead to aircraft instability. To mitigate this effect, we use an extended Kalman filter with colored noise. In addition to the traditional aircraft dynamics, this approach considers the electromagnetic fields of transmission lines and their position, electrical current, and tower topology. In this way, the filter can predict and correct the interference in the aircraft sensors, thereby guaranteeing flight stability even when the AUAV is very close to the electromagnetic sources. This approach enables the AUAV to operate closer to the transformers and transmission lines, thereby paving the way for better autonomous inspection performed by electrical companies and further development of new technologies. To prove the effectiveness of this approach, theoretical and practical results involving a survey of transmission lines are demonstrated. • A new approach that enables Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) to navigate very close to transmission lines. • It incorporates the electromagnetic noise along with the UAV dynamics. • An Extended Kalman Filter with state augmentation is used to filter the colored noise. • Can be used to obtain better visual and multispectral images from electrical components. • Tested in a real Hydroelectric power plant. This work presents a novel and extensive investigation of mathematical regression techniques, for the prediction of laboratory-type kinematic measurements during human gait, from wearable measurement devices, such as gyroscopes and accelerometers. Specifically, we examine the hypothesis of predicting the segmental angles of the legs (left and right foot, shank and thighs), from rotational foot velocities and translational foot accelerations. This first investigation is based on kinematic data emulated from motion-capture laboratory equipment. We employ eight established regression algorithms with different properties, ranging from linear methods and neural networks with polynomial support and expanded nonlinearities, to radial basis functions, nearest neighbors and kernel density methods. Data from five gait cycles of eight subjects are used to perform both inter-subject and intra- subject assessments of the prediction capabilities of each algorithm, using cross-validation resampling methods. Regarding the algorithmic suitability to gait prediction, results strongly indicate that nonparametric methods, such as nearest neighbors and kernel density based, are particularly advantageous. Numerical results show high average prediction accuracy (p =0.98/0.99, RMS=5.63°12.30°, MAD=4.43°11.52° for inter/intra-subject testing). The presented work provides a promising and motivating investigation on the feasibility of cost-effective wearable devices used to acquire large volumes of data that are currently collected only from complex laboratory environments.
