Abandoned metal(loid) mine tailings show inhospitable conditions for the establishment of above- and below-ground communities (e.g., high metal(loid) levels, organic matter and nutrient deficiency). This worsens in semiarid areas due to the harsh climate conditions. Fertility islands (vegetation patches formed by plants that spontaneously colonize the tailings) can serve as potential nucleation spots fostering beneficial plant-microbial interactions. However, less attention has been paid to the soil invertebrates living beneath these patches and their functional role. Here, we studied whether the spontaneous plant colonization of abandoned metal(loid) mine tailings led to a greater presence of soil microarthropod communities and whether this could contribute to improving ecosystem functionality. Microarthropods were extracted, taxonomically identified and subsequently assigned to different functional groups (saphrophages, omnivores, predators) in bare soils and differently vegetated patches within metalliferous mine tailings and surrounding forests in southeast Spain. Microarthropod communities were significantly different in bare soils compared with vegetated patches in mine tailings and surrounding forests. Plant colonization led to an increase in microarthropod abundance in tailing soils, especially of mites and springtails. Moreover, saprophages and omnivores, but not predators, were favored in vegetated patches. The initial microarthropod colonization was mainly linked to higher organic matter accumulation and greater microbial activity in the vegetated patches within mine tailings. Moreover, soil formation processes already initiated in the tailings were beneficial for soil biota establishment. Thus, below-ground communities created an anchorage point for plant communities by primarily starting heterotrophic activities in the vegetated patches, thereby contributing to recover ecosystem functionality.

The study aims to conduct a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) of mixed glass waste (MGW) recycling processes to quantify the environmental impacts of crushed glass as a partial substitute for virgin aggregate. Upstream washing, crushing, and sorting conducted at material recycling facilities (MRF) are the prime activities to assess whether reprocessed MGW in pavement construction is an alternate feasible solution. None of the previous studies explicitly account for the relative uncertainties and optimization of waste glass upstream processes from an environmental perspective. The study calculates environmental impacts using the LCA tool SimaPro considering design factors attributed to transportation, electricity consumption, use of chemicals, and water for reprocessing glass waste. Relative uncertainties of design variables and the national transition policy (2021−2030) from non-renewable to renewable energy sources have been validated by performing detailed Monte Carlo simulations. The correlation coefficients (r = 0.64, 0.58, and 0.49) of successive variables explain how the higher environmental gains of the glass recycling process are outweighed by diesel, energy consumption, and transportation distances. Compared to natural quarry sand, the recycled glass aggregate produced through crushing and recycling of its by-products reduces CO2eq emissions by 16.2 % and 46.7 %, respectively. The need for a washing line at the plant, in addition to crushing, results in a higher environmental impact over natural sand by 90.1 % and emphasizes the benefits of collecting waste glass through a separate bin, hence avoiding contamination. The result indicates that the benefit of lowering emissions varies significantly when considering waste glass landfilling. Moreover, this study evaluates the potential impacts on asphalt and reinforced concrete pavements (RCP) with 5 %, 10 %, 15 %, and 20 % replacement of natural sand with recycled glass aggregate. The LCA emphasizes the limitations of energy-intensive waste glass reprocessing. The obtained results and uncertainty analysis based on primary MRF data and recycled product applications provide meaningful suggestions for a more fit-for-purpose waste management and natural resource conservation.

WBE has now become a complimentary tool in SARS-CoV-2 surveillance. This was preceded by the established application of WBE to assess the consumption of illicit drugs in communities. It is now timely to build on this and take the opportunity to expand WBE to enable comprehensive assessment of community exposure to chemical stressors and their mixtures. The goal of WBE is to quantify community exposure, discover exposure-outcome associations, and trigger policy, technological or societal intervention strategies with the overarching aim of exposure prevention and public health promotion. To achieve WBE's full potential, the following key aspects require further action: (1) Integration of WBE-HBM (human biomonitoring) initiatives that provide compre-hensive community-individual multichemical exposure assessment. (2) Global WBE monitoring campaigns to provide much needed data on exposure in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) and fill in the gaps in knowledge especially in the underrepresented highly urbanised as well as rural settings in LMICs. (3) Combining WBE with One Health actions to enable effective interventions. (4) Advancements in new analytical tools and methodologies for WBE progression to enable biomarker selection for exposure studies, and to provide sensitive and selective multiresidue analysis for trace multi-biomarker quantification in a complex wastewater matrix. Most of all, further developments of WBE needs to be undertaken by co-design with key stakeholder groups: government organisations, health authorities and private sector.

Rainfall-induced landslides cause frequent disruptions to critical infrastructure in mountainous countries. Climate change is altering rainfall patterns and localizing extreme rainfall events, increasing the occurrence of landslides. For planning climate-resilient critical infrastructure in landslide-prone regions, it is urgent to understand the changing landslide susceptibility in relation to changing rainfall extremes and spatially overlay them with critical infrastructure to determine risk zones. As such, areas requiring financial reinforcements can be prioritized. In this paper, we develop a framework linking changing rainfall extremes to landslide susceptibility and intensity of critical infrastructure — exemplified on a national scale using Nepal as a case study. First, we define a set of 21 different unique rainfall indices that describe extreme and localized rainfall. Second, we prepare a new annual (2016–2020) inventory of 107,900 landslides in Nepal mapped on PlanetScope satellite imagery. Next, we prepare a landslide susceptibility map by training a random forest model using the collected extreme rainfall indices and landslide locations in combination with spatial data on topography. Fourth, we construct a gridded critical infrastructure spatial density map that quantifies the intensity of infrastructure (i.e., transportation, energy, telecommunication, waste, water, health, and education) at each grid location using OpenStreetMap. The landslide susceptibility map classified Nepal's topography into low (36 %), medium (33 %), and (32 %) high rainfall-triggered landslide susceptibility zones. The landslide susceptibility map had an average area under the receiver characteristic curve value of 0.94. Finally, we overlay the landslide susceptibility map with the critical infrastructure intensity to identify areas needing financial reinforcement. Our framework reasonably mapped critical infrastructure hotspots in Nepal prone to landslides on a 1 km grid. The hotspots are mainly concentrated along major national highways and in provinces 4, 3, and 1, highlighting the need for improved land management practices. These hotspots need spatial prioritization regarding climate-resilient critical infrastructure financing and slope conservation policies. The research data, output maps, and code are publicly released via an ArcGIS WebApp and GitHub repository. The framework is scalable and can be used for developing infrastructure financing strategies for landslide mountain regions and countries.

Understanding the extent of collaboration among stakeholders is key to supporting mangrove management. Despite the existence of robust policies, collaboration among stakeholders of mangrove co-management remains largely unexplored in Sri Lanka. This was partly due to the civil war, natural disasters, and other socio-economic changes over the past 30 years. Our study aimed to identify the collaboration between stakeholders of mangrove management and their perceptions regarding mangrove co-management in Sri Lanka using social network analysis and content analysis. Surveys were conducted in all five coastal provinces of Sri Lanka. Stakeholders included in the study were from government departments, non-governmental organizations, and private institutes. Our results showed that there were differences between coastal provinces in the mangrove management networks, specifically in the number of stakeholders involved and their degree of collaboration. Some important stakeholders (for example the Land Use and Policy Planning Department) were excluded from the social networks in certain provinces (Eastern and Western provinces). There were various issues hampering effective mangrove management such as inefficient communication, inconsistencies between policies, and insufficient financial capacity of government stakeholders responsible for policy implementation. According to the stakeholders in our study, providing mangrove management initiatives with long-term collaboration, post-care, continuous monitoring, and funding may help to overcome these challenges. Additionally, we suggest the establishment of a common platform to coordinate stakeholders. We further encourage increasing the participation of academics, researchers, and students from national universities in the mangrove co-management of Sri Lanka. Insights from this island-wide survey can be adapted to mangrove and other natural resource management trajectories in other countries as well.

The predictability of pyrolysis yields and product composition of mixed plastics has been studied. To do so, pyrolysis of virgin polymers (HDPE, LDPE, PP, PS and PET) and eight individual sorting categories from a real waste DKR-350 stream (PE rigid/film, PP rigid/film, PET, PS, multilayer flexibles, and clogged materials) was performed in a batch reactor at 500 °C at laboratory scale. The obtained oil/wax, gas, and solid yields and the composition of oil/wax of those individual feedstocks were used as input of a superposition model to predict the corresponding pyrolysis yields and oil/wax composition of mixed feeds, which were later compared with the experimentally measured product yields from the pyrolysis of those mixed streams. This linear model predicts the oil/wax yield of the mixed streams to a reasonable extent, with a maximum yield deviation (overestimation) of 8 percentage points. However, the presence of significant amounts of PET (above 33 wt%) in the mixed plastic streams negatively impacts the production of the condensable product and promotes the formation of solid products beyond the expected predicted values. Quantification of the type of carbon (aliphatic, aromatic and carbonyl) present in all the oil/wax products was done using 13C NMR spectroscopy. A linear model could also predict the aliphatic carbon yield in the condensable product from plastic waste streams with high accuracy (maximum yield difference of 6 percentage points). However, the aromatic carbon yield could not be predicted, probably due to the observed behavior of PET, which interacts with other polymers to promote solid product formation.

This study aims to investigate the chloride diffusion behavior of alkali activated slag and fly ash blends with different contents of waste glass powder (GP) addition. The reaction heat flow of alkali activated slag/fly ash/waste glass is characterized. The reaction products are determined by X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). N2 adsorption analysis (BET) is used to evaluate the microstructure of samples. The accelerated chloride penetration test (ACPT) is applied to study the chloride resistance of the AAMs. Subsequently, the leaching test of chloride penetrated samples are conducted and ion chromatography is utilized to measure the chloride content in the samples. According to the BET results, the total volume of mesopores decreases with increasing GP content. The results of ACPT show that the increasing GP in AAMs shows an enhancement of chloride resistance.

Due to its versatility and storability, biomass is an important resource for renewable materials and energy. Miscanthus hybrids combine high yield potential, low input demand, tolerance of certain marginal land types and several ecosystem benefits. To date, miscanthus breeding has focussed on increasing yield potential by maximising radiation interception through: (1) selection for early emergence, (2) increasing the growth rate to reach canopy closure as fast as possible, and (3) delayed flowering and senescence. The objective of this study is to compare early season re-growth in miscanthus hybrids cultivated across Europe. Determination of differences in early canopy development on end-of-year yield traits is required to provide information for breeding decisions to improve future crop performance. For this purpose, a trial was planted with four miscanthus hybrids (two novel seed-based hybrids M. sinensis × sinensis [M sin × sin] and M. sacchariflorus × sinensis [M sac × sin], a novel rhizome-based M sac × sin and a standard Miscanthus × giganteus [M × g] clone) in the UK, Germany, Croatia and Italy, and was monitored in the third and fourth growing season. We determined differences between the hybrids in base temperature, frost sensitivity and emergence strategy. M × g and M sac × sin mainly emerged from belowground plant organs, producing fewer but thicker shoots at the beginning of the growing season but these shoots were susceptible to air frosts (determined by recording 0°C 2 m above ground surface). By contrast, M sin × sin emerged 10 days earlier, avoiding damage by late spring frosts and producing a high number of thinner shoots from aboveground shoots. Therefore, we recommend cultivating M sac × sin at locations with low risk and M sin × sin at locations with higher risk of late spring frosts. Selecting miscanthus hybrids that produce shoots throughout the vegetation period is an effective strategy to limit the risk of late frost damage and avoid reduction in yield from a shortened growing season.

In this study, floatability rate of aluminum (Al) powders was analyzed for the purpose of separating valuable resources from residual materials in waste photovoltaic (PV) solar cells, and equations for flotation recovery were developed for various flotation types according to the rate-determining steps of the gas flowrate and feed rate. The flotation rate became a zero-order reaction at the rate-determining step of the gas flow rate and had the same form between a batch and continuous typed practices by substituting residence time with real time. Under the rate-determining step of the feed rate, the flotation rate was expressed by the linear combination of the first-order reaction of an even group material. The flotation recovery rate of Al powders was analyzed by the data of a batch floatability experiment and indicated by the linear expression of the first-order reaction of two groups due to the rate-determining step of the feed rate. The calculated separation recovery of n-cell type device increased as the number of cells increased and approached that of the batch and column types.

Purpose of Review: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ground-level ozone (O3) pose a significant risk to human health. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently revised healthy thresholds for both pollutants. The formation and evolution of PM2.5 and O3 are however governed by complex physical and multiphase chemical processes, and therefore, it is extremely challenging to mitigate both pollutants simultaneously. Here, we review mechanisms and discuss the science-informed pathways for effective and simultaneous mitigation of PM2.5 and O3. Recent Findings: Global warming has led to a general increase in biogenic emissions, which can enhance the formation of O3 and secondary organic aerosols. Reductions in anthropogenic emissions during the COVID-19 lockdown reduced PM2.5; however, O3 was enhanced in several polluted regions. This was attributed to more intense sunlight due to low aerosol loading and non-linear response of O3 to NOx. Such contrasting physical and chemical interactions hinder the formulation of a clear roadmap for clean air over such regions. Summary: Atmospheric chemistry including the role of biogenic emissions, aerosol-radiation interactions, boundary layer, and regional-scale transport are the key aspects that need to be carefully considered in the formulation of mitigation pathways. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the chemical effects of the emission reductions, changes in photolytic rates and boundary layer due to perturbation of solar radiation, and the effect of meteorological/seasonal changes are needed on a regional basis. Statistical emulators and machine learning approaches can aid the cumbersome process of multi-sector multi-species source attribution.

Switchgrass is a promising energy crop has the potential to mitigate global warming and energy security, improve local ecology and generate profit. Its quantitative traits, such as biomass productivity and environmental adaptability, are determined by genotype-by-environment interaction (GEI) or response of genotypes grown across different target environments. To simulate the yield of switchgrass outside its original habitat, a genotype-specific growth model, SwitchFor that captures GEI was developed by parameterising the MiscanFor model. Input parameters were used to describe genotype-specific characteristics under different soil and climate conditions, which enables the model to predict the yield in a wide range of environmental and climate conditions. The model was validated using global field trail data and applied to estimate the switchgrass yield potentials on the marginal land of the Loess Plateau in China. The results suggest that upland and lowland switchgrass have significant differences in the spatial distribution of the adaptation zone and site-specific biomass yield. The area of the adaption zone of upland switchgrass was 4.5 times of the lowland ecotype's. The yield difference between upland and lowland ecotypes ranges from 0 to 34 Mg ha−1. The weighted average yield of the lowland ecotype (20 Mg ha−1) is significantly higher than the upland type (5 Mg ha−1). The optimal yield map, generated by comparing the yield of upland and lowland ecotypes based on 1 km2 grid locations, illustrates that the total yield potential of the optimal switchgrass is 61.6–106.4 Tg on the marginal land of the Loess Plateau, which is approximately twice that of the individual ecotypes. Compared with the existing models, the accuracy of the yield prediction of switchgrass is significantly improved by using the SwitchFor model. This spatially explicit and cultivar-specific model provides valuable information on land management and crop breeding and a robust and extendable framework for yield mapping of other cultivars.

This paper is aimed at analyzing the consumers’ willingness to use mobile apps that claim to contribute to mitigating the food waste problem. We study the extent to which such willingness is influenced by three factors related to the consumers’ willingness to use mobile apps in general (perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and perceived risks) and three factors related to the consumer behavior against food waste (food neophobia, moral attitude, and knowledge about food conservation). A survey was conducted on 283 Italian consumers. Results show that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use positively affect the willingness to use mobile apps against food waste, while perceived risks by potential users negatively impact such willingness. However, none of the three consumer-related factors has been proved to be significant. The results of this paper offer managerial implications to developers, related to how to advertise the app and how to improve the app functionality, in order to enhance the consumers’ willingness to use.

Agricultural N losses strongly dominate the N delivery (average 72 % of total N delivery to rivers in the period 1980–2010) in the rivers discharging into the Bohai Sea, a semi-enclosed marginal sea, which has been suffering from eutrophication and deoxygenation since the 1980s. In this paper we investigate the relationship between N loading and deoxygenation in the Bohai Sea, and consequences of future N loading scenarios. Using modeling for the period 1980–2010, the contributions of different oxygen consumption processes were quantified and the main controlling mechanisms of summer bottom dissolved oxygen (DO) evolution in the central Bohai Sea were determined. Model results show that the water column stratification during summer impeded the DO exchange between oxygenated surface water and oxygen-poor bottom water. Water column oxygen consumption (60 % of total oxygen consumption) was strongly correlated with elevated nutrient loading, while nutrient imbalances (increasing N:P ratios) enhanced harmful algal bloom proliferation. Future scenarios show that deoxygenation may be reduced in all scenarios owing to increasing agricultural efficiency, manure recycling and wastewater treatment. However, even in the sustainable development scenario SSP1, nutrient discharges in 2050 will still exceed the 1980 levels, and with further enhancement of water stratification due to climate warming, the risk of summer hypoxia in bottom waters may persist in the coming decades.

A key aspect of protecting aquatic ecosystems from agricultural nitrogen (N) is to locate (i) farmlands where nitrate leaches from the bottom of the root zone and (ii) denitrifying zones in the aquifers where nitrate is removed before entering the surface water (N-retention). N-retention affects the choice of field mitigation measures to reduce delivered N to surface water. Farmland parcels associated with high N-retention gives the lowest impact of the targeted field measures and vice versa. In Denmark, a targeted N-regulation approach is currently implemented on small catchment scale (approx. 15 km2). Although this regulatory scale is much more detailed than what has been used previously, it is still so large that regulation for most individual fields will be either over- or under-regulated due to large spatial variation in the N-retention. The potential cost reduction for farmers is of up to 20–30% from detailed retention mapping at the field scale compared to the current small catchment scale. In this study, we present a mapping framework (N-Map) for differentiating farmland according to their N-retention, which can be used for improving the effectiveness of targeted N-regulation. The framework currently only includes N-retention in the groundwater. The framework benefits from the incorporation of innovative geophysics in hydrogeological and geochemical mapping and modelling. To capture and describe relevant uncertainties a large number of equally probable realizations are created through Multiple Point Statistical (MPS) methods. This allows relevant descriptions of uncertainties of parts of the model structure and includes other relevant uncertainty measures that affects the obtained N-retention. The output is data-driven high-resolution groundwater N-retention maps, to be used by the individual farmers to manage their cropping systems due to the given regulatory boundary conditions. The detailed mapping allows farmers to use this information in the farm planning in order to optimize the use of field measures to reduce delivered agricultural N to the surface water and thereby lower the costs of the field measures. From farmer interviews, however, it is clear that not all farms will have an economic gain from the detailed mapping as the mapping costs will exceed the potential economic gains for the farmers. The costs of N-Map is here estimated to 5–7 €/ha/year plus implementation costs at the farm. At the society level, the N-retention maps allow authorities to point out opportunities for a more targeted implementation of field measures to efficiently reduce the delivered N-load to surface waters.

Karst caves are potential sinks of atmospheric methane due to microbial consumption. However, knowledge gaps on methanogens (methane producing microorganisms) and their interaction with methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) hinder our further understanding about methane dynamics in karst caves. Here we reported methanogenic community composition and their interaction with MOBs in the Heshang Cave to comprehensively understand methane cycling in subsurface biosphere. MOBs in karst cave were dominated by high-affinity MOB, upland soil cluster (USC), with USCγ pmoA gene abundance within the range of 1.34 × 104 to 1.8 × 107 copies·g−1 DW. In contrast, methanogens were dominated by Methanoregula and cluster ZC-I. The mcrA numbers were 7.21 × 103 to 8.31 × 104 copies·g−1 DW, 1–3 orders of magnitude lower than those of MOB. The inter-domain network analysis indicated that MOBs and methanogens cooperated more in the interior of the cave. Despite of the higher number of methanogenic nodes in the network, MOB dominated the keystone taxa, suggesting a leading functional role of MOB. MOB in caves showed a comparable with or higher potential methane oxidizing rate (PMOR, 0.63 ng CH4·g−1 DW·h−1 in sediment versus 11.02 ng CH4·g−1 DW·h−1 in weathered rock) than those in soils, whereas methane produced by methanogens was undetected. Collectively, high absolute abundances of MOB, high PMORs, the dominance of methanotrophic keystone taxa in the inter-domain network confirmed the superiority of MOBs over methanogens in the oligotrophic karst cave, mounting new evidence on caves as an important methane sink in terms of the interaction between methanogens and MOBs.

Noise barriers are one of the common solutions to control road traffic noise. Many studies have also shown that noise barriers cause reductions in near-road air pollutant concentrations. In this study, the simultaneous effects of a specific noise barrier application on near-road noise and air pollution at a specific location were investigated. In this context, air pollution, noise, and meteorological parameters were measured simultaneously at two points, road and receptor sides of a 50 m long, 4 m high glass fiber reinforced concrete noise barrier on a highway section. Results indicated that the noise barrier has an average 23 % reduction effect on the NOx concentration in addition to the noise level reduction at the receptor side. Besides, bi-weekly average passive sampler measurement results for BTEX pollutants indicate lower values at the receptor side of the barrier compared to the free field measurement results. In addition to real-time and passive sampler measurements, NOx and noise dispersions were modeled using RLINE and SoundPLAN 8.2 software, respectively. Comparisons of the measurement results with the model results indicated strong correlations. Model-calculated NOx and noise values under the free field conditions are highly compatible with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.78. Although the noise barrier has a reduction effect on both parameters, it has been observed that their dispersion mechanisms are different. This study showed that noise barriers considerably affect the dispersion of road-sourced air pollutants at the receptor side. Further studies are needed to optimize noise barrier designs with different physical and material properties and application scenarios considering noise and air pollutants together.

Primary considerations for urban blue-green infrastructure (BGI) encompass sustainable stormwater/urban heat management while biodiversity conservation is often considered an inherent benefit rather than a core planning requirement. However, ecological function of BGI as ‘stepping stones’ or linear corridors for otherwise fragmented habitats is undisputed. While quantitative approaches for modelling ecological connectivity in conservation planning are well established, mismatches in scope and scale with models that support the planning of BGI makes their adoption and integration difficult across disciplines. Technical complexities have led to ambiguity around circuit and network-based approaches, focal node placement, spatial extents, and resolution. Furthermore, these approaches are often computationally intensive, and considerable gaps remain in their use for identifying local-scale critical “pinch-points” that urban planners may respond to with the integration of BGI interventions that address biodiversity enhancement among other ecosystem services. Here, we present a framework that simplifies and integrates the merits of regional connectivity assessments with a focus on urban areas to prioritise BGI planning interventions while reducing computational demands. Our framework facilitates: (1) modelling potential ecological corridors at a coarse regional scale, (2) prioritising local-scale BGI interventions based on the relative contribution of individual nodes in this regional network, and (3) inferring connectivity hot- and cold-spots for local-scale BGI interventions. We illustrate this in the Swiss lowlands, demonstrating how, compared to previous work, we are able to identify and rank different priority locations across the region for BGI interventions in support of biodiversity enhancement and how their local-scale functional design may be benefited by addressing specific environmental variables., Journal of Environmental Management, 342, ISSN:0301-4797, ISSN:1095-8630

Packaging represents the largest fraction of plastic waste in Europe. Currently, mechanical recycling schemes are mainly focused on the recovery of rigid packaging (like bottles), while for flexible packaging, also called films, recycling rates remain very low. Existing mechanical recycling technologies for these films are quite basic, especially in the case of complicated post-consumer flexible plastics (PCFP) waste, leading to regranulate qualities that are often subpar for renewed use in demanding film applications. In this study, the technical and economic value of an improved mechanical recycling process (additional sorting, hot washing, and improved extrusion) of PCFPs is investigated. The quality of the four types of resulting regranulates is evaluated for film and injection molding applications. The obtained Polyethylene-rich regranulates in blown films offer more flexibility (45-60%), higher ductility (27-55%), and enhanced tensile strength (5-51%), compared to the conventional mechanical recycling process. Likewise, for injection molded samples, they exhibit more flexibility (19-49%), enhanced ductility (7 to 20 times), and higher impact strength (1.8 to 3.8 times). An economic assessment is made between the obtained increased market value and the capital investment required. It is shown that the economic value can be increased by 5-38% through this improved recycling process. Overall, the study shows that it is possible to increase the mechanical recycling quality of PCFP in an economically viable way, thus opening the way for new application routes and overall increased recycling rates.

Most plastics are today mechanically recycled (MR), whereas chemical recycling (CR) is an emerging technology. Substitutability of virgin material is vital for their environmental performance assessed through life cycle assessment (LCA). MR faces the reduction in the material's technical quality but also the potential market because legal safety requirements currently eliminate applications such as food packaging. This study presents a data-driven method for quantifying the overall substitutability (OS), composed of technical (TS) and market substitutability (MS). First, this is illustrated for six non-food contact material (non-FCM) applications and three hypothetical future FCM applications from mechanical recyclates, using mechanical property and market data. Then, OS results are used in a comparative LCA of MR and thermochemical recycling (TCR) of several plastic waste fractions in Belgium. For mechanical recyclates, TS results for the studied non-FCM and FCM applications were comparable, but OS results varied between 0.35 and 0.79 for non-FCM applications and between 0.78 and 1 for FCM applications, reflecting the lower MS results for the current situation. Out of nine application scenarios, MR obtained a worse resource consumption and terrestrial acidification impact than CR in six scenarios. MR maintained the lowest global warming impact for all scenarios. This study contributes to an improved understanding of the environmental benefits of MR and TCR. Inclusion of other criteria (e.g. processability, colour, odour) in the quantification of the overall substitutability for MR products should be further investigated, as well as the environmental performance of TCR at industrial scale.

Sardine cooking effluents contain a high level of organic matter, such as proteins and lipids, which allows them to be forward into a chain exploiting high added-value compounds attained from these effluents, increasing their economic value while reducing their environmental effect. Thus, the purpose of this work was to develop an innovative pilot-scale integrated membrane process, with or without enzymatic hydrolysis, to obtain fractions with high protein/peptide and low NaCl contents, as well as optimized bioactive properties. The research strategy followed involved the use of ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) technologies of the pretreated sardine cooking effluent followed by reverse osmosis (RO) at a pilot scale levels. Moreover, it allowed for the attainment of fractions rich in protein/peptides that might be used in the food, pharmaceutical, or cosmetic industries, particularly after RO, as they present a lower NaCl content. The RO retentate (hydrolyzed sample) coupled with UF and NF resulted in the fractions with the best bioactive properties (higher antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial activity) of all the analyzed samples. Overall, the current work demonstrated the feasibility of exploiting liquid by-products as a source of functional components as well as reinforcing this strategy’s potential relevance in future effective management strategies for this type of effluents.

The ubiquity of microplastics (MPs) in the various environment is of increasing concern. Although micro Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (μ-FTIR) represents an ideal method for the detection of MPs, this technique lacks a standardized mode to be followed for MPs in diverse environmental matrices. The study focused on the optimization, application, and validation of μ-FTIR techniques for the identification of smaller-sized MPs (20 μm-1 mm). In order to assess the validity of the various detection modes in μ-FTIR (reflection and transmission), a confirmatory test with known standard polymers, viz., polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyamide (PA), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were executed. Subsequently, for the validation and accuracy of the method, the polymer spectra of standard polymers acquired in μ-FTIR (smaller-sized) were compared with spectra of larger-sized particles (same standards) in FTIR-ATR (Attenuated Total Reflectance). The spectra were comparable and highlighted the similar pattern of the polymeric composition. The spectral quality and matching score (>60 %) with the reference library was taken into account to accentuate the authenticity of the different methods. This study highlighted the reflection mode (particularly diffuse reflection) as more effective for the quantification of smaller-sized MPs in complex environmental samples. The same method was successfully applied to a representative environmental sample (sand), supplied by the EURO-QCHARM for inter-laboratory study. Two polymers (PE and PET) were correctly identified out of three spiked polymers (PE, PET, and PS) in the given sample. Similarly, in terms of matching algorithms, the results for diffuse reflection (PE-71.7 % and PET-89.1 %) were found satisfactory as compared to micro-ATR (PE-67 % and PET-63.2 %) reflection mode. Overall, this study illustrates an extensive perspective of different μ-FTIR techniques, recommending the most reliable, easy, and non-destructive method to unambiguously characterize diverse types of polymers of smaller MPs in complex environmental matrices.

Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) is one of the short-chain perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), and frequently detected in the environment, humans, and wildlife, but a detailed mechanism of toxicity has been not studied yet. In this study, a comprehensive set of polar metabolites was determined in i) the developing zebrafish embryo (4, 24, 48, 72, and 120 h post fertilization (hpf)), and ii) in the developing zebrafish after exposure to four concentrations of PFHxS (0.3, 1, 3, and 10 μM) from 24to 120 hpf. The temporal (developmental stages) distribution of individual metabolites (541 metabolites) in zebrafish provided comprehensive information about the biological roles of various metabolites in developing vertebrates such as genetic processes, energy metabolism, protein metabolism, and glycerophospholipid metabolism. PFHxS in zebrafish embryo showed time- and concentration- dependent bioaccumulation, and no baseline toxicity was expected at the test concentrations. However, effects on many metabolites were already observed at the lowest tested concentration (0.3 μM), and these effects were more pronounced at later stages of developmental (72 and 120 hpf). In addition to oxidative stress, the effects of PFHxS on zebrafish embryos were related to the disruption of the fatty acid oxidation (FAO), sugar metabolism, and other metabolic pathways. This study gave new and comprehensive information on the underlying mechanism of the toxicity of PFHxS.

Maritime activity has diverse environmental consequences impacts in port areas, especially for air quality, and the post-COVID-19 cruise tourism market's potential to recover and grow is causing new environmental concerns in expanding port cities. This research proposes an empirical and modelling approach for the evaluation of cruise ships' influence on air quality concerning NO2 and SO2 in the city of La Paz (Mexico) using indirect measurements. EPA emission factors and the AERMOD modelling system coupled to WRF were used to model dispersions, while street-level mobile monitoring data of air quality from two days of 2018 were used and processed using a radial base function interpolator. The local differential Moran's Index was estimated at the intersection level using both datasets and a co-location clustering analysis was performed to address spatial constancy and to identify the pollution levels. The modelled results showed that cruise ships' impact on air quality had maximum values of 13.66 µg/m3 for NO2 and 15.71 µg/m3 for SO2, while background concentrations of 8.80 for NOx and 0.05 for SOx (µg/m3) were found by analysing the LISA index values for intersections not influenced by port pollution. This paper brings insights to the use of hybrid methodologies as an approach to studying the influence of multiple-source pollutants on air quality in contexts totally devoid of environmental data.

Efforts to improve soil health require that target values of key soil properties are established. No agreed targets exist but providing population data as benchmarks is a useful step to standardise soil health comparison between landscapes. We exploited nationally representative topsoil (0–15 cm) measurements to derive soil health benchmarks for managed and semi-natural environments across Great Britain. In total, 4587 soil organic matter (SOM), 3860 pH, 2908 bulk density (BD), and 465 earthworm abundance (EA) datapoints were used. As soil properties are sensitive to site-specific characteristics, data were stratified by habitat, soil type, and mean annual precipitation, with benchmarks defined as the middle 80 % of values in each distribution – yielding 135 benchmarks. BD and pH decreased with land management intensity (agriculture > semi-natural grasslands > woodlands > heathlands > wetlands), and vice versa for SOM and EA. The worldwide decline of coral reefs has renewed interest in coral communities at the edge of environmental limits because they have the potential to serve as resilience hotspots and climate change refugia, and can provide insights into how coral reefs might function in future ocean conditions. These coral communities are often referred to as marginal or extreme but few definitions exist and usage of these terms has therefore been inconsistent. This creates significant challenges for categorising these often poorly studied communities and synthesising data across locations. Furthermore, this impedes our understanding of how coral communities can persist at the edge of their environmental limits and the lessons they provide for future coral reef survival. Here, we propose that marginal and extreme coral communities are related but distinct and provide a novel conceptual framework to redefine them. Specifically, we define coral reef extremeness solely based on environmental conditions (i.e., large deviations from optimal conditions in terms of mean and/or variance) and marginality solely based on ecological criteria (i.e., altered community composition and/or ecosystem functioning). This joint but independent assessment of environmental and ecological criteria is critical to avoid common pitfalls where coral communities existing outside the presumed optimal conditions for coral reef development are automatically considered inferior to coral reefs in more traditional settings. We further evaluate the differential potential of marginal and extreme coral communities to serve as natural laboratories, resilience hotspots and climate change refugia, and discuss strategies for their conservation and management as well as priorities for future research. Our new classification framework provides an important tool to improve our understanding of how corals can persist at the edge of their environmental limits and how we can leverage this knowledge to optimise strategies for coral reef conservation, restoration and management in a rapidly changing ocean.

The considerable environmental burden of textiles is currently globally recognized. This burden can be mitigated by applying circular economy (CE) strategies to the commonly linear, short garment life cycles that end with incineration or landfill disposal. Even though all CE strategies strive to promote environmental sustainability, they might not be equally beneficial. Environmental data on different textile products is insufficiently available, which leads to complications when assessing and deciding on different CE strategies to be implemented. This paper studies the environmental impacts of a polyester T-shirt's linear life cycle through life cycle assessment (LCA) and evaluates the benefits attainable by adopting different CE strategies, and their order of priority, while noting uncertainty arising from poor data quality or unavailability. The LCA is complemented by assessing health and environmental risks related to the different options. Most of the linear life cycle's LCA-based impacts arise from use-phase washing. Hence, it is possible to reduce the environmental impact notably (37 %) by reducing the washing frequency. Adopting a CE strategy in which the shirt is reused by a second consumer, to double the number of uses, enables an 18 % impact reduction. Repurposing recycled materials to produce the T-shirt and recycling the T-shirt material itself emerged as the least impactful CE strategies. From the risk perspective, reusing the garment is the most efficient way to reduce environmental and health risks while washing frequency has a very limited effect. Combining different CE strategies offers the greatest potential for reducing both environmental impacts as well as risks. Data gaps and assumptions related to the use phase cause the highest uncertainty in the LCA results. To gain the maximum environmental benefits of utilizing CE strategies on polyester garments, consumer actions, design solutions, and transparent data sharing are needed.

Along with the increasing demand for energy and pressure to reduce carbon emissions, floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems are increasingly built on the surface of water bodies with the aim to produce clean energy. However, little is known about how FPV systems influence freshwater ecosystems, e.g., their zooplankton communities. We investigated how rotifer communities responded to FPV systems in subsidence wetlands created by underground coal mining in the North China Plain. Diversity metrics of the rotifer communities were compared between wetlands with and without FPV systems. The density of rotifers was higher in wetlands without FPV systems. In contrast, rotifer diversity as represented by Shannon-Weiner and Pielou evenness indices was higher in the FPV-covered wetlands, while there was no difference in species richness between the two types of wetlands. Furthermore, community structures differed between the two types of wetlands, in large part reflecting differences in the relative abundance of five dominant species found in both types of wetlands. These differences in rotifer assemblages were in large part explainable from environmental changes caused by the FPV panels, notably reduced light availability and water temperature, leading to reduced phytoplankton production. These findings show that FPV systems cause major changes to rotifer communities in these subsidence wetlands and likely in wetlands more generally, and monitoring of the longer-term effects is recommended given the fundamental role of zooplankton in freshwater ecosystems.

To achieve this objective, 17 Global Climate Models from CMIP6 were used, with data from historical and hist-1950 experiments spanning 1982–2050. This analysis highlights significant warming of coastal areas worldwide, with higher and more variable rates of warming than observed in previous decades. All basins are projected to experience an increase in coastal SST near 1 °C by mid-century, with some regions exhibiting nearshore SST anomalies exceeding 2 °C for the period 2031–2050 relative to 1995–2014. Regarding the Eastern Upwelling Boundary Systems, only the Canary upwelling system and the southern part of the Humboldt upwelling system manage to show lower-than-average SST warming rates, maintaining, to a certain extent, their ability to buffer global warming Xunta de Galicia | Ref. Mismanaged plastic litter submitted to environmental conditions may breakdown into smaller fragments, eventually reaching nano-scale particles (nanoplastics, NPLs). In this study, pristine beads of four different types of polymers, three oil-based (polypropylene, PP; polystyrene, PS; and low-density polyethylene, LDPE) and one bio-based (polylactic acid, PLA) were mechanically broken down to obtain more environmentally realistic NPLs and its toxicity to two freshwater secondary consumers was assessed. Thus, effects on the cnidarian Hydra viridissima (mortality, morphology, regeneration ability, and feeding behavior) and the fish Danio rerio (mortality, morphological alterations, and swimming behavior) were tested at NPLs concentrations in the 0.001 to 100 mg/L range. Mortality and several morphological alterations were observed on hydras exposed to 10 and 100 mg/L PP and 100 mg/L LDPE, whilst regeneration capacity was overall accelerated. The locomotory activity of D. rerio larvae was affected by NPLs (decreased swimming time, distance or turning frequency) at environmentally realistic concentrations (as low as 0.001 mg/L). Overall, petroleum- and bio-based NPLs elicited pernicious effects on tested model organisms, especially PP, LDPE and PLA. Organic chemicals associated with microplastics (MPs) can be released and thus pose potential risks during weathering processes. However, the thermodynamics and kinetics of their release processes still need to be better understood. Herein, the adsorption and desorption kinetics of triclosan on polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were investigated by using both batch experiments and diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique. The pseudo-second-order model fitted the data best, implying that both intraparticle diffusion and external liquid film diffusion influence the adsorption and desorption processes. DGT continuously accumulated triclosan from MP suspensions but slower than theoretical values, indicating some restrictions to desorption. The DGT-induced fluxes in Soils/Sediment (DIFS) model, employed to interpret DGT data, gave distribution coefficients for labile species (Kdl) of 5000 mL g−1 (PS) and 1000 mL g−1 (PVC) and the corresponding response times (Tc) were 10 s and 1000 s, respectively. Higher Kdl but smaller Tc for PS than PVC showed that more triclosan adsorbed on PS could be rapidly released, while there were some kinetic limitations for triclosan on PVC. A novel finding was that pH and ionic strength individually and interactively affected the supply of triclosan to DGT. This is the first study to quantify interactions of organics with MPs by using DGT, aiding our understanding of MPs' adsorption/desorption behavior in the aquatic environment.

The global energy transition is very resource intense, and scholarship is rapidly increasing to show its impacts in various resource extraction frontiers in the global South. These emerging studies are clarifying the social and environmental impacts of extracting particular energy transition resources (ETRs). However, there is still limited attention on the cumulative socioenvironmental impacts of extracting multiple ETRs from the same region. This paper proposes to mix geospatial and qualitative research methods to examine the cumulative socioenvironmental impacts of ETR extraction. We apply these mixed methods to study the impacts of an expanding frontier of graphite and natural gas extraction in Mozambique. The geospatial results show that patterns in socioenvironmental changes, including a surge in built-up and bare areas and water-covered surfaces, and a shrinkage of vegetated areas – some of which are ecologically sensitive, are starting to emerge in the project areas. In combination with qualitative methods, we identified additional impacts including an increase in solid waste and air and noise pollution, and an inception of extractivism-associated conflict in certain project areas. When single commodities are analyzed, using single methods, some of these impacts may be overlooked or underestimated. In order to fully understand the sustainability implications of the energy transition process, it is instrumental to combine geospatial and qualitative research methods to monitor the cumulative socioenvironmental impacts at its upstream end.

The geochemical behavior of metals in water and sediment was investigated in the tidal section of the Zenne River in Belgium. Twelve-hour sampling campaigns were performed in October 2013 and March 2021 at the mouth of the Zenne River, under dry and rainy weather conditions respectively. Water samples were collected every hour while the passive samplers of Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGT) were deployed continuously during a tidal cycle. In addition, bottom sediments were sampled at the tidal station and water samples were taken upstream and downstream of that station to identify the metal sources. The highest concentrations of Fe, Mn, Pb, Cr, Ni and Zn appear at low tide, indicating the Zenner River as a main source. However, for Co, Cd and Cu, other sources including upstream transport may explain their behavior during a tidal cycle. Fe, Pb and Cr are essentially transported in the particulate phase (

We present a new 2.5D model for predicting the concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at street level in an urban area. This work develops the first prototype of a tool that should provide fast quantitative answers to help decision-making on the suitability of implementing traffic restrictions during air pollution episodes. The model first solves the wind flow over the city streets ignoring vorticity and turbulence. The obtained velocity field is used to transport the pollutant via a semi-Lagrangian model, combining the particle finite element method of second generation (PFEM2) with the finite element method. A variable absorption term is used to account for the part of the contaminant entering and leaving the calculation plane. The NO2 emissions are estimated from the historical traffic data. The model has been tested during four air pollution episodes in the city of Barcelona (Spain), two in summer and two in winter. A comparison against experimental measurements has been performed at seven different locations throughout the city with promising results.

Global dependence upon fossil fuels persists in the 21st century. With known deposits of oil diminishing, technological advancements and alternative financing have facilitated explorations into a number of sensitive habitats around the world. Such pursuits challenge global priorities relating to the ideals of energy production versus those of biodiversity protection. Presently, the implications of oil extraction on terrestrial wildlife, for instance, are unclear, undermining the ability to meet this challenge. We synthesized the literature to quantify the range of documented impacts of oil extraction on terrestrial wildlife and to identify prevailing knowledge gaps. Our review returned 31 studies documenting various effects of oil extraction, across the exploration, development, production, and abandonment phases, on terrestrial wildlife. These studies were most often based in North and South America, tended to focus on the development phase of oil extraction projects, and often focused on the impacts on mammals. We found that terrestrial wildlife were generally negatively impacted by oil extraction through road development, seismic surveys, hydraulic fracturing, installation of oil wells, contamination, and other extraction disturbances. We also considered the implications of this review on oil extraction in Murchison Falls National Park and the broader Murchison Falls Conservation Area, a highly biodiverse region in Uganda. Herein, we detected an important knowledge gap relating to the ways in which various oil extraction activities may increase the potential for human-wildlife conflict. Reviews of this type are essential for quantifying the effects of oil extraction on terrestrial wildlife and can inform future decision-making on natural resource extraction in ecologically-sensitive habitats globally.

Despite a theoretical link between plastic and plasticiser occurrence in the terrestrial environment, there are few empirical studies of the relationship between these contaminants in soils. We carried out a field study to assess the co-occurrence of plastic waste, and legacy and emerging plasticisers in UK soils (n = 19) from various land uses (woodlands, urban roadsides, urban parklands, landfill-associated). Surface plastics and soil microplastics were quantified and characterised using ATR-FTIR and μ-FTIR. Eight legacy (phthalate) and three emerging (adipate, citrate, trimellitate) plasticisers were quantified using GC–MS. Surface plastics were found at higher prevalence at landfill-associated and urban roadside sites, with levels significantly (2 orders of magnitude) greater than in woodlands. Microplastics were detected in landfill-associated (mean 12.3 particles g−1 dw), urban roadside (17.3 particles g−1 dw) and urban parkland (15.7 particles g−1 dw) soils, but not in woodland soils. The most commonly detected polymers were polyethene, polypropene and polystyrene. Mean ∑plasticiser concentration in urban roadside soils (3111 ng g−1 dw) was significantly higher than in woodlands (134 ng g−1 dw). No significant difference was found between landfill-associated (318 ng g−1 dw) and urban parkland (193 ng g−1 dw) soils and woodlands. Di-n-butyl phthalate (94.7% detection frequency) and the emerging plasticiser trioctyl trimellitate (89.5%) were the most commonly detected plasticisers, with diethylhexyl phthalate (493 ng g−1 dw) and di-iso-decyl phthalate (96.7 ng g−1 dw) present at the highest concentrations. ∑plasticiser concentrations were significantly correlated with surface plastic (R2 = 0.23), but not with soil microplastic concentrations. Whilst plastic litter seems a fundamental source of plasticisers in soils, mechanisms such as airborne transport from source areas may be as important. Based on the data from this study, phthalates remain the dominant plasticisers in soils, but emerging plasticisers are already widespread, as reflected by their presence in all land uses studied.

The aim of this study was to assess the environmental impacts of up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors coupled with high rate algal ponds (HRAPs) for wastewater treatment and bioenergy recovery using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. This solution was compared with the UASB reactor coupled with other consolidated technologies in rural areas of Brazil, such as trickling filters, polishing ponds and constructed wetlands. To this end, full-scale systems were designed based on experimental data obtained from pilot/demonstrative scale systems. The functional unit was 1 m3 of water. System boundaries comprised input and output flows of material and energy resources for system construction and operation. The LCA was performed with the software SimaPro®, using the ReCiPe midpoint method. The results showed that the HRAPs scenario was the most environmentally friendly alternative in 4 out of 8 impact categories (i.e. Global warming, Stratospheric Ozone Depletion, Terrestrial Ecotoxicity and Fossil resource scarcity). This was associated with the increase in biogas production by the co-digestion of microalgae and raw wastewater, leading to higher electricity and heat recovery. From an economic point of view, despite the HRAPs showed a higher capital cost, the operation and maintenance costs were completely offset by the revenue obtained from the electricity generated. Overall, the UASB reactor coupled with HRAPS showed to be a feasible nature-based solution to be used in small communities in Brazil, especially when microalgae biomass is valorised and used to increase biogas productivity. Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is common and increases the risk of stroke and mortality. Previous studies have suggested that air pollution is an important risk factor for new-onset AF. Herein, we review the evidence regarding: 1) the association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) and new-onset AF, and 2) the risk of worse clinical outcomes in patients with pre-existent AF and their relation to PM exposure.Methods: A selection of studies between 2000 and 2023 linking PM exposure and AF was performed through searches in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar.Results: 17 studies from different geographical areas demonstrated that exposure to PM was associated with an increased risk of new-onset AF, although the results were heterogeneous regarding the temporal pattern (short- or long-term) ultimately related to AF. Most of the studies concluded that the risk of new-onset AF increased between 2 %-18 % per 10 μg/m3 increment in PM2.5 or PM10 concentrations, whereas the incidence (percentage of change of incidence) increased between 0.29 %-2.95 % per 10 μg/m3 increment in PM2.5 or PM10. Evidence about the association between PM and adverse events in patients with pre-existent AF was scarce but 4 studies showed a higher risk of mortality and stroke (between 8 %-64 % in terms of hazard ratio) in patients with pre-existent AF when PM exposure was higher.Conclusions: Exposure to PM (both PM2.5 and PM10) is a risk factor for AF, and a risk factor for mortality and stroke in patients who already suffer from AF. Since the relationship between PM and AF is independent of the region of the world, PM should be considered as a global risk factor for both AF and worse clinical outcomes in AF patients. Specific measures to prevent air pollution exposure need to be adopted. Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is common and increases the risk of stroke and mortality. Previous studies have suggested that air pollution is an important risk factor for new-onset AF. Herein, we review the evidence regarding: 1) the association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) and new-onset AF, and 2) the risk of worse clinical outcomes in patients with pre-existent AF and their relation to PM exposure.Methods: A selection of studies between 2000 and 2023 linking PM exposure and AF was performed through searches in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar.Results: 17 studies from different geographical areas demonstrated that exposure to PM was associated with an increased risk of new-onset AF, although the results were heterogeneous regarding the temporal pattern (short- or long-term) ultimately related to AF. The investigation of the pyrolysis behaviour of real-world waste plastics (RWWP) and using them as the feedstock to produce carbon nanotubes (CNTs) could serve as an effective solution to address the global waste plastics catastrophe. This research aimed to characterize the pyrolysis behaviour of RWWP via thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and fast pyrolysis-TG/mass spectrometry (Py-TG/MS) analyses. Activation energies (131.04 kJ mol−1 –171.04 kJ mol−1) for RWWP pyrolysis were calculated by three methods: Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) method, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) method, and Starink method. Py-TG/MS results indicated that the RWWP could be identified as polystyrene (RWWP-1), polyethylene (RWWP-2), polyethylene terephthalate (RWWP-3, 4), and polypropylene (RWWP-5, 6). In addition, RWWP-1, 2, 5, 6 outperform RWWP-3 and 4 as sources of carbon for producing CNTs. The results showed a high carbon yield of 32.21 wt% and a high degree of CNT purity at 93.04%.

The presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments extremely concerns to human health and the ecosystem; thus, their removal is essential. This work produced carbon fiber aerogels from egg box waste using a chemical-free fabrication process. The pyrolyzed egg box aerogel (PEBA) exhibited three-dimensional interconnected carbon nanofibers with high surface area and pore volume. The adsorption capacity and removal efficiency of four PPCPs, namely, diclofenac (DIC), caffeine (CF), tetracycline (TC), and ciprofloxacin (CIP), from water were high and comparable to other carbon-based adsorbents, and the adsorption time was much faster (within 20 min). The Redlich-Peterson and the pseudo-second-order models were the best-fitted isotherm and kinetic models, respectively, which imply multilayer adsorption at high concentrations and the chemisorption process. Furthermore, mechanisms responsible for the adsorption of all PPCPs were elucidated. PEBA was applied in the fixed-bed column experiment to mimic the continuous adsorption process. In addition, PEBA was recyclable after low-temperature heat treatment. The adsorption capacity (8.1 mg/g) and removal efficiency (94.03 %) for TC was still high after three cycles. Metabolomics analysis revealed that no secondary pollution is released into water after thermal treatment. Therefore, PEBA has the potential as an efficient adsorbent for removing PPCPs from water.

In wineries, wastewater production and solid waste generation can pose serious environmental threats. Winery wastewater production has a seasonal behavior and needs a treatment system that can adapt to these fluctuations while reducing costs, and environmental impacts and promoting other winery activities. The implementation of constructed wetlands (CWs) has been demonstrated to be a competitive solution for winery wastewater and sludge treatment. In this article, worldwide experiences over the last 25 years of CWs for winery wastewater treatment are reviewed. The review shows that the application of hybrid CWs coupled with anaerobic digestion can reduce >90 % of the organic pollutants and solids from winery wastewater while avoiding clogging. These efficiencies and advantages can be also attained with French vertical systems. Not only CWs have a good technical performance, but they also reduce up to >90 % the environmental impacts associated with winery wastewater treatment. It is due to low energy requirements, no chemicals consumption and avoidance of off-site management and transportation practices. In terms of costs, CWs can reduce up to 60 times the costs associated with winery wastewater treatment and management. More efforts should be made in order to define the social benefits of this technology and the quality of the recovered resources (e.g. treated water, fertilizer) in order to promote the circular economy without compromising human and ecosystem health. Ecosystem engineering species, such as beavers, may help the restoration of biodiversity. Through the building of dams and lodges and altering the natural hydrology, beavers change the habitat structure and create multiple habitats that facilitate a wide variety of other organisms including terrestrial invertebrate communities. Here we study the effect of beaver reintroduction in Klosterheden in Denmark on biomass of flying invertebrates and diversity of moths. Further, aerial photos were used to assess riparian structure and productivity using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Our findings show that the presence of beavers affected flying invertebrate biomass, but that this was dependent on time of the year. Further, a strong effect of presence of beavers was found on diversity of moths. The results also show an increase in vegetation productivity and structural heterogeneity at sites with presence of beavers. Overall, our results demonstrate the importance of beavers as important ecosystem engineers that affect invertebrate species composition and abundance, as well as riparian structure and productivity.

Accumulation of non-degradable plastic waste in the environment might be prevented by the use of biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). In this study, the thermophile Schlegelella thermodepolymerans produced up to 80 wt% PHA based on dry cell mass. The largest PHA granules were found in the cells within 48 h using 20 g/L xylose, a C/N ratio of 100, an initial pH of 7, at 50 °C. The substrate consumption, pH changes, and cell growth were monitored, revealing the time dependency of PHA production in S. thermodepolymerans. The metabolic pathways from xylose to PHA were identified based on proteomic analysis, revealing involvement of classic phaCAB, de novo fatty acid biosynthesis, and fatty acid β-oxidation. In addition, it was shown that S. thermodepolymerans degraded extracellular PHA with a high efficiency at 50 °C.

Widespread implementation of on-site water reuse is hindered by the limited availability of monitoring approaches that ensure microbial quality during operation. In this study, we developed a methodology for monitoring microbial water quality in on-site water reuse systems using inexpensive and commercially available online sensors. An extensive dataset containing sensor and microbial water quality data for six of the most critical types of disruptions in membrane bioreactors with chlorination was collected. We then tested the ability of three typological machine learning algorithms – logistic regression, support-vector machine, and random forest – to predict the microbial water quality as “safe” or “unsafe” for reuse. The main criteria for model optimization was to ensure a low false positive rate (FPR) – the percentage of safe predictions when the actual condition is unsafe – which is essential to protect users health. This resulted in enforcing a fixed FPR ≤ 2%. Maximizing the true positive rate (TPR) – the percentage of safe predictions when the actual condition is safe – was given second priority. Our results show that logistic-regression-based models using only two out of the six sensors (free chlorine and oxidation–reduction potential) achieved the highest TPR. Including sensor slopes as engineered features allowed to reach similar TPRs using only one sensor instead of two. Analysis of the occurrence of false predictions showed that these were mostly early alarms, a characteristic that could be regarded as an asset in alarm management. In conclusion, the simplest algorithm in combination with only one or two sensors performed best at predicting the microbial water quality. This result provides useful insights for water quality modeling or for applications where small datasets are a common challenge and a general advantage might be gained by using simpler models that reduce the risk of overfitting, allow better interpretability, and require less computational power., Water Research, 240, ISSN:0043-1354, ISSN:1879-2448
