From a socio-cognitive transdisciplinary perspective combining psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics, this research paper studies the relations between manifestations of interlinguistic transfers and metasyntactic skills in 9/10-year-old French-Norwegian children. Its purpose is to assess whether these transfers influence access and use of the children’s metasyntactic skills in reading comprehension tasks. Following a mixed-method research design, data was collected with 33 bilingual French-Norwegian children registered in the 5th grade at the French school in Oslo. The children took part in a grammaticality judgment test written in French and containing errors due to Norwegian syntactic calque. Subsequently, 13 of the children involved in the experiment participated in a semi-structured interview in which they explained their answers. A group of French monolingual children also took the test in France. Statistical analyses of the test results show the existence of interlinguistic syntactic transfers which weaken metasyntactic skills when errors are related to the use of a preposition. The present paper aims to explore the topic of the vocation of a courtesan in the 19th-century France, by analyzing memoirs of tree demi-mondaines of the time: Céleste Mogador, Cora Pearl and Rigolboche. Does such a vocation exist? If yes, how can we define this notion? The first part tries to show that prostitution isn't chosen by women because of the their inclination to debauchery, but is the result of the failed education and parental abandonment. The second part focuses on the importance of independence in the courtesan's life, as a part of their vocation, and the manner to gain it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HOLINESS ,CHRISTIANITY ,MARTYRS ,SAINTS ,MOTHERS ,MONASTERIES - Abstract
The present paper provides a discursive and lexical study of the biographical peculiarities of some women who became holy in Orthodoxy; or in "secular" terms, using the words of the contemporary modern man, a study of the main aspects of what might be called a particular type of female "career" in holiness. We will refer to holy martyrs of the first centuries of Christianity and to contemporary saints, including one who lived in the previous century, as well as to other saints, mentioned as wives, mothers or sisters of holy men, analyzing both lexically and discursively their proper names and the stories of their lives contained in the Synaxarion. We will use the most extensive Synaxarion written in French by Father Macarius of the Athonite monastery of Simonos Petra, an abridged version of which is used liturgically at the French Orthodox monastery of Saint-Antoine-Le-Grand, metochion (or dependency) of Simonos Petra in France. POPULATION dynamics , *ONTOLOGY , *QUANTITATIVE research , *CRITICISM , *LONG-Term Evolution (Telecommunications) - Abstract
Through three examples coming from long-term studies of population dynamics in France, intra and inter-urban, this paper shows that the introduction of some "a-historical" ontologies was required to implement quantitative analyses of spatial evolutions. However, we demonstrate that these ontologies are far from being neutral, and that they do not dissolve the specificity of the sources we used, but on the contrary, they constitute situated knowledge. Beyond these criticisms, the authors tend to argue that the process of construction and dialogue established around ontology is very beneficial to research, that it is a foundation for an interdisciplinary, shared and sustainable Science. CANNABIS (Genus) ,HEPATIC fibrosis ,FATTY liver ,CANNABINOIDS ,LIVER diseases ,LIVER transplantation - Abstract
Cannabis, the most widely consumed illicit drug in France, affects many hepato-gastrointestinal processes through its actions on the endocannabinoid system. This system is composed of cannabinoids, substances from the Cannabis Sativa plant, the three main ones being tetracannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabinol (CBN), and two main receptors: CB1 and CB2. The CB1 receptor may have a pro-fibrogenic role and the CB2 receptor may have anti-fibrogenic effects. CBD, which is not bound to either receptor, could also have an effect on liver fibrosis and also on hepatic steatosis by modulating inflammatory and oxidative responses. Reducing or suppressing the accumulation of hepatic fibrosis and steatosis is an important goal in the management of chronic liver disease, as we know that metabolic steatotic liver disease is the leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide and that there is currently no curative treatment available to slow/suppress hepatic fibrosis and steatosis. Furthermore, with the legalisation of cannabis in many countries, it is important to discuss the place of cannabis in people awaiting liver transplantation and also the side effects of cannabis in post liver transplantation. Context: Participatory research in environmental health remains rare in France. The objectives of environmental health research projects can, like their methods, be very diverse. Opportunities for greater involvement of civil society, as well as its challenges, differ at each step of such research activities. All these aspects need to be widely shared. As a preparatory step toward the development of concrete new participatory research projects on multiple environmental exposures, the LILAS project aimed to (1) favor the mutual understanding of the main issues and research methods in environmental health and their stakes for different participants, but also the requirements, strengths, and limitations of these methods, and (2) identify the expected benefits and points to watch out for related to stronger civic participation in these projects. Methods: The LILAS project identified and gathered together institutional researchers, academics and civil society participants (mainly from nongovernmental organizations) interested in multiple exposures (chemical and radiological). The relevant literature was searched to learn from previous participatory research projects in this broad field. Several meetings enabled the group to collectively identify different types of studies and analyze the benefits, limitations and methods related to the introduction of such participation. An analysis matrix was co-constructed and completed by study participants, as in a Living Lab approach. Results: The matrix lists for different types of studies (assessment of environmental exposures, identification of their determinants, interventions on these exposures, quantitative risk assessment, epidemiological studies, experimental research, ecosystem health, etc.) the expected benefits for several categories of stakeholders, the fundamental principles of research methods, and their related practical constraints, advantages and limitations related to the use of participatory or more standard approaches. Conclusion: The LILAS project enabled the development of a solid basis for the co-construction of participatory research projects to study multiple environmental exposures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Indoor air quality is a major public health issue. Potential government actions include reducing indoor sources of volatile pollutants, especially household uses of some consumer products of concern. To help identify the products with the greatest health risks, a Health Risk Assessment (HRA) approach was applied to three types of consumer products, selected in advance for their expected individual risks: combustible air fresheners (incense, scented candles), cleaning products, and non-combustible air fresheners (sprays, diffusers). The scope of the HRA covered inhalation exposures (chronic and acute) and household uses. These HRAs were based on concentrations measured in real conditions and on exposure scenarios ("mean" and "reasonable worst-case") developed with national utilization surveys in France. A meeting with stakeholders for cleaning products led to the development of full "multi-product" and "multi-room" cleaning sessions. The results suggest that, based on the products tested and on the assumptions selected in these HRA, (i) the most common uses for each type of product studied correspond to individual chronic risks that may not be of concern, (ii) the highest exposures for each type of product should be reduced to ensure safe use and, as such, emissions should be reduced for the products with the highest emission levels, (iii) incense products and, to a lesser extent, fragrance sprays are the consumer products with the highest individual risks among the products studied. The priority substances identified were acrolein, benzene, formaldehyde, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5 ). Potential health effects include various respiratory system disorders and an excess risk of leukemia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

How can science be better integrated into public health action? How can environmental health research better serve prevention, the domain of its health and social applications? Both have the same requirement of transversality and intersectorality. This article defends the value of citizen empowerment in both research (participatory research and research-action) and public prevention actions (health protection and health promotion) to facilitate this integration. In these two areas, the practice of co-construction with experts makes use of the citizen's common knowledge as a patient – inhabitant – user – consumer and its possible hybridization with academic knowledge. We present an overview of existing achievements in France in both fields and deliver a message of hope about progress towards the WHO's "Health for All" goal, formulated in 1979. - Abstract
Technological advances in synthetic biology have made in vitro modification, or even creation, of viruses easier and more affordable. Several research studies using synthesis of potential pandemic pathogens led to controversies in the 2010's. More recently, the hypothesis that Covid-19 pandemics could originate from a lab escape is still under debate. In France, a legislative vacuum remains concerning the synthesis of modified pathogens. Initiating a collective reflection process towards setting of a legal framework on this type of work is timely so that research continues to provide profit to society rather than hazard., (© 2022 médecine/sciences – Inserm.)

- Abstract
The transition of care between pediatric and adult care is a key-period for adolescents with chronic disease, because of the high risk of follow-up loss and of short-term and long-term poorer health. To support transition, platforms of transition have been created in France since several years, implemented in pediatric or adult care structures. Their common objective is to provide a physical reception of adolescents and their parents to share about transition issues, and to inform them about resources to enhance the adolescent's global health. They tend to work closely with the referent health care providers and the patients' associations. A large heterogeneity of functioning and health care supply is still observed in these recent structures. Supporting these structures and reinforcing the partnerships between pediatric and adults care remain a challenge., (© 2021 médecine/sciences – Inserm.)

- Abstract
As the negative psychological impact of Covid-19 is no longer in doubt, the aim of the study presented here was to quantify the post-traumatic growth (PTC) of caregivers working in critical care. To this end, a paper questionnaire was distributed in the critical care department of the Lyon-Sud hospital. Among the care team, 67% had developed PTC, showing that despite the difficulties experienced during the trauma, the team had managed to grow from this crisis., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Masson SAS. - Abstract
Although it is a major issue, the health of children and adolescents in care is still mainly explored on the basis of information provided by adults in French studies. This study therefore aims to make up for the lack of studies integrating the young people’s own point of view and to explore certain aspects of health, as reported by the children and adolescents themselves, by comparing the health of children in care with that of children in the general population. The sample consists of 477 children in care (versus 23,672 who are not). The data were collected through a cross-sectional survey conducted by UNICEF France between October 2020 and March 2022 among 25,300 children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 who responded to a paper or online self-administered questionnaire. The main results of this study confirm the existing findings concerning the much greater health care needs of children and adolescents placed outside their homes (foster families, children’s homes) compared to their peers. In particular, they underline greater psychological suffering linked to their life histories, health risk practices, sexual violence, and suicidal risk. The discussion addresses the complexity of the issues associated with their health and underlines the importance of taking into account the child’s own point of view.

Cancers: INCIDENCE AND SURVIVAL IN METROPOLITAN France. Incidence and survival rates are key indicators for cancer surveillance. They also help to drive cancer control programs and public health policies. Focusing on the main cancer localisations, this paper describes the latest incidence (2023) and survival (2018) rates, as well as their evolutions since 1990 in metropolitan France. In 2023, the number of new cases of cancer was estimated to be 433 136, of which 57% occurring in men. Both gender considered, the most frequent cancers are: breast cancer (61 214 new cases), prostate cancer (59 885 new cases) and lung cancer (52 777 new cases). Although the « all cancer » incidence rate as remained quite stable for 33 years in men, it has been raising by almost 1% per year in women. Regarding survival, the standardized net survival (SNS) at 5 years shows great disparities among tumor sites, and it is overall higher in women. Cancers with the best prognosis are thyroid cancer (SNS at 5 years: 96%), prostate cancer (93%), skin melanoma (93%) and uterine cancer (74%). On the contrary, a few tumor locations, including the pancreas (SNS at 5 years of 11%), the liver (18%) and the lung (20%) are still associated with a poor prognosis, even if survival rates have increased in most of cancer locations since 1990., Competing Interests: Les auteurs déclarent n’avoir aucun lien d’intérêts.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN NEONATAL SCREENING. The French national newborn screening program (NBS) celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022. A few drops of blood are drawn between 48 and 72 hours of life for each newborn on a filter paper and entrusted to a Regional Center for Newborn Screening, which analyses it diligently. When the result is beyond a threshold, the baby and its parents are summoned to a specialized paediatric department. If the suspected disease is confirmed, specific care can be started in time to avoid or limit a disability. Each year, nearly 1.000 sick children are diagnosed by NBS in France, and treated in a specialized hospital team. The 2018 National Rare Disease Plan has relaunched the NBS process. Until then, 7 diseases whose hearing loss were detected. Since then, 7 other diseases have been added to the program, and others were recommended or are being assessed, opening a new page in the history of NBS in France., Competing Interests: D. - Abstract
Background: Lung transplantation (LT) requires sustained care for a frequently polypathological condition. Follow-up is focused on three main issues: 1/stability of respiratory function; 2/comorbidity management; 3/preventive medicine. About 3000 LT patients in France are treated in 11 LT centers. Given the increased size of the LT recipient cohort, follow-up might be partially shared with peripheral centers., Methods: This paper presents the suggestions of a working group of the SPLF (French-speaking respiratory medicine society) on possible modalities of shared follow-up., Results: While the main LT center is tasked with centralizing follow-up, particularly the choice of optimal immunosuppression, an identified peripheral center (PC) may serve as an alternative to deal with acute events, comorbidities and routine assessment. Communication between the different centers should be free-flowing. Shared follow-up may be offered from the 3rd postoperative year to stable and consenting patients, whereas unstable and non-observant patients are poor candidates., Conclusion: These guidelines may serve as a reference for any pneumologist wishing to effectively contribute to follow-up, even and especially subsequent to lung transplant., (Copyright © 2023 SPLF. Introduction: The ANRS 14058 Ganymede study aims to determine the proportion post-migration HIV-seroconversion in a sample of HIV-positive men having sex with men (MSM) born outside of France and receiving medical care in Paris region (Île-de-France). The study, based on a self-questionnaire, is also focused on the life course of these MSM before, during and after the migration process., Purpose of Research: The paper refers to a qualitative exploratory study, taking place as a prerequisite for the Ganymede study, in order to refine its questionnaire. The purpose of these interviews was also to explore the migratory motivations and experiences, the sexual biography, and the health history, of a sample of seropositive MSM born outside of France, and to illustrate the diversity of this epidemiological category., Results: Forteen respondents participated in the interview study. Nine of them have learned of their HIV-positive status after having emigrated to France. None of the respondents mentioned a major barrier to medical care access and HIV follow-up. The obstacles they reported were related to the coverage of medical expenses, due to their possible precarious legal and social situation. These men were exposed to the effects of power relations, leading to discrimination and violence, whose wider impacts on health were weakly evoked., Conclusions: Although the findings of the exploratory study are not to be generalized, they illustrate the health issues of the interviewees, and the wide diversity of their biographies and life courses, emphasizing the impact of gender and class power relations as a source of social and health inequalities, and precariousness. They invite therefore to describe this epidemiological category of "MSM born outside of France" in a more heterogeneous way.
