Libraries have long been involved in conversations around book banning and censorship. The American Library Association noted that librarians and information workers in 2022 witnessed the most documented attempts at banning books ever recorded. This is in lockstep with contemporary examples of legislative efforts to censor, ban, and by extension criminalize information. The criminalization of information is one that has a direct impact on library users as well as academic freedom. In an effort to best support scholars at all levels in the University, academic teaching librarians will need to develop strategies to approach the information classroom. Understanding that book bans and censorship are a form of criminalization allows us to be in conversation with scholarship that focus on how to combat criminalization such as abolitionist pedagogy. This article introduces core concepts of abolitionist pedagogy as a means to create new educational justice pathways and to interrupt information criminalization.

Bibliotheken wollen und sollen inklusive Orte für alle Menschen sein und eine positive und wertschätzende Atmosphäre schaffen. Teil davon ist der respektvolle Umgang mit Nutzenden, sowohl im direkten Kontakt vor Ort als auch beim Kontakt über Anmeldeformulare und Webseiten. Im Rahmen des digitalen Denklabors „Critical Library Perspectives“, das im Mai und Juni 2022 von der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin und der Universitätsbibliothek der Freien Universität Berlin veranstaltet wurde, haben wir uns mit gendersensibler Sprache im Kontakt mit Bibliotheksnutzenden auseinandergesetzt. Im ersten Teil werten wir stichprobenartig Anmeldeformulare und Webseiten aus, um ein aktuelles Bild vom Stand der Umsetzung und Anwendung gendersensibler Sprache in diesen Bereichen zu erhalten. Im zweiten Teil verknüpfen wir Anmelde- sowie Auskunftsgespräche vor Ort und deren Ziele mit der Anwendung gendersensibler Sprache. Aus dieser Verknüpfung entsteht eine konkrete Handlungsempfehlung für Mitarbeitende in Auskunftssituationen, wenn diese eine Person misgendert haben. Libraries want to and should be inclusive places for all people and create a positive and appreciative atmosphere. Part of this is respectful interaction with users, both in direct contact on site and in contact via registration forms and websites. As part of the digital Scholar’s Lab "Critical Library Perspectives", organized by the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin and the University Library of Freie Universität Berlin in May and June 2022, we explored gender-sensitive language in contact with library users. In the first part, we evaluate registration forms and websites to get an up-to-date picture of the state of implementation and use of gender-sensitive language in these settings. In the second part, we link on-site registration as well as reference interviews and their goals with the use of gender-sensitive language. This link results in a practical recommendation for librarians on how to act in case they misgendered a person face-to-face.

Although it is crucial for libraries to meet required online accessibility standards (e.g., Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0), compliance with these technical standards does not guarantee optimal or equitable experiences for all library users who interact with online spaces or materials. Recent literature on accessibility testing has acknowledged the value of including people with disabilities in testing and designing digital objects and spaces. This thinking aligns with the library-based user experience (UX) principle that talking directly to users about their experiences using library services and resources is the most effective way to understand and thereby improve the overall library experience. In 2020, the UX Group at Western Libraries undertook a pilot accessibility testing initiative to plan, design, and deliver participatory accessibility testing with campus community members who had self-identified as living with a range of disabilities. Three accessibility tests were designed to assess five distinct digital objects, and 14 testing sessions were completed with eight participants. A semi-structured and participatory testing method allowed participants to freely interact with the testing objects, provide detailed feedback regarding their experiences using the objects, and recommend improvements to elements they found less accessible. This article includes an overview of considerations and challenges of the initiative as well as lessons learned in the process of securing funding, recruiting participants, designing the tests, and conducting testing. We reflect on the value of participatory accessibility testing and make recommendations for conducting similar projects at other libraries.

Der Beitrag berichtet von den Ergebnissen einer Prüfung von Regelungen an der Schnittstelle ‚Bibliothek/Nutzer:innen‘, die die Verfasserin zusammen mit Reinhard Altenhöner, dem ständigen Vertreter der Generaldirektion der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, im Rahmen gerichtlicher Mediation durchgeführt hat. Er erörtert die Ursachen für häufige Ausschlüsse von der Benutzung sowie die Problematik von Regelungen und Verfahrensweisen, deren organisatorische Erforderlichkeit nicht geklärt ist, die allerdings einen subliminalem Strafcharakter aufweisen. In diesem Kontext analysiert die Autorin auch jüngere verwaltungsgerichtliche Urteile zu Mahngebühren. The article reports on the results of an examination of regulations at the interface 'library/users', which the author carried out together with Reinhard Altenhöner, the permanent representative of the General Directorate of the Berlin State Library, within the framework of judicial mediation. It discusses the causes of frequent exclusions from use as well as the problematic nature of regulations and procedures whose organisational necessity has not been assessed, but which have a subliminal punitive character. In this context, the author also analyses recent administrative court judgements on late fees.

With the rapid development of modern information technology, library users have higher and higher requirements for the information retrieval service of university library. Therefore, it is imperative to improve the information retrieval service of university library. In order to improve the level of information retrieval service and gradually perfect the system of information retrieval service of university library, this paper aims to develop and innovates the management mode of information retrieval service of university library by centering on the three parts of information retrieval service mode, retrieval mode and user training of university library.

Introduction: Finding efficient ways to meet the growing demand for library systematic review support is imperative for facilitating the production of high-quality research. The objectives of this study were threefold: 1) to ascertain the systematic review support provided by health sciences libraries at Ontario medical schools and their affiliated hospitals, 2) to determine the perceived educational needs by researchers at these institutions, and 3) to assess the potential usefulness of freely available, online educational modules for researchers that discuss all stages of the systematic review process. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in June and July of 2020. Data were analyzed and presented using median and interquartile range (IQR) for continuous measures, and in proportions for categorical measures. Results: Thirteen of 19 libraries invited provided usable data. Most libraries spent more time supporting systematic reviews via collaboration/participation than by providing educational support. The perceived needs of library users were contrary to the perceived gaps in researcher support provided by the library/institution. All libraries reported they would find freely available, online educational modules useful for training researchers. Discussion: The next steps for our inter-professional research team will be to develop freely available, online education modules that introduce researchers to all stages of the systematic review process. These modules cannot replace the value that direct support from librarians, biostatisticians or methodology experts can provide, however, they may offer a more efficient way for libraries to familiarize researchers and trainees with best practices and universally accepted reporting guidelines for performing a high-quality review.

The advanced transformation of universities' libraries that is fulfilled by many innovations has offered students an easier way to access collections of sources of information. Even though accessing collections is merely easy, there is a library service area that has restrictions. For instance, reference services frequently include a rule that states that students are only permitted to read materials there and then they are not permitted to borrow collections to read later. Some university libraries offer paid photocopying services despite the limited hours of the library service, which makes it a worthwhile study topic. A qualitative-descriptive research methodology was used for this investigation. In the meantime, the interview approach was employed to obtain the data for this study. The findings demonstrated that students had no other option except to employ copying services in order to fulfill their demands. The availability of these services also fosters a mutually beneficial relationship between users and libraries.For users, there is no need to take notes and go back and forth from the library to refer to the required references. Then for the library, photocopying services provide financial income that supports library development. Its existence, which is still surviving today, helps create a stable cost flow for libraries that can be utilized by library managers and provides time efficiency for users to get the information they need. Although the price of photocopying in the library is more expensive than photocopying outside the library, users are still enthusiastic about using it so that the service continues.

Big Data is the product of the rapid development and application of information technology, and it is also the inevitable trend of the development and application of intelligent technology. In the environment of big data, by giving full play to the advantages of big data decision-making system and actively constructing library personalized push system, we will break the foundation of Library Service Space and time, fully guarantee the information system and service ability of the library. In the process of operation, libraries should make full use of big data resources and accurately identify the service demand, reading behavior and individual characteristics of library users, innovate the Information Mode and personalized service method, continuously improve the user’s reading experience, improve the user relationship, thus form the accurate, personalized and intelligent book information service system.
