The ecclesiology of Wolfhart Pannenberg witnesses to the praiseworthy effort to reinscribe the Church in its theological reality, by means of the work of the Spirit which establishes it, beyond the simple gathering together of the baptised. It remains however dependent upon the abiding principles of Lutheranism which sees in the Church only a provisional reality, sign of the Kingdom which is essentially eschatological. Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato si' constitutes a deepening of the Church's teaching on ecology, along the lines of what was sketched out by Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI. The integral character of the ecological preoccupation, which is found also in other realms of the political and social doctrine of the Church, bears witness to its anthropological nature.
