INTERPERSONAL relations , *PHYSICAL environment , *AESTHETICS , *SCIENTIFIC literature , *SOCIAL interaction - Abstract
When we consider aesthetics in human relationships with the physical environment as addressed in scientific literature, two leading approaches emerge. On the one hand aesthetics would appear to be the prerogative of a distanciated look and linked to the notion of "extraordinary". On the other, aesthetics would be so immersed in "ordinary life" that it finally dissolves in it and vanishes behind other leading values, such as utilitarian ones. This is particularly obvious in studies of local people's aesthetical experiences. In this paper, we argue that there could be a third way between these two approaches to understanding the aesthetical dimension of human relationships with the environment. We analyzed semi-directive interviews with people in two contrasted situations: mountain hikers in the Pyrénées and holiday-makers in the Sensée marshes of northern France. We point out that aesthetics in people's relationships with their physical environment may be seen as manifesting the tension between ordinary and extraordinary. This enables us to perceive the importance of the political dimension of aesthetics, whether visible (experience of a place explicitly incorporates the social relationships that take place in it) or concealed behind an aesthetical experience that appears to be very direct, material and autonomous. 7. The Civil Society Concept: An Attempt at a Complementary Approach.

CIVIL society ,SOCIOLOGY ,SOCIAL contract ,SOCIAL theory ,INTERPERSONAL relations ,SOCIAL sciences - Abstract
The following paper attempts to offer a framework for understanding the interdependence between modern civil society and the democratic state in all its complexity and mutual relations. The author seeks inspiration in two very significant sources - in a reconstruction of Tocqueville's social theory and thought, and in Giddens' theory of reflexive modernity. In the first step, the author offers a robust normative perspective of the concept of a civil society and, in the second step, tries to outline the complex interpretative framework for an empirical analysis of state-civil society relations. The presented schemes are intended to support the ambition of overcoming to a certain extent the crucial sociological paradox between the macro- and the micro-sociological approach and considering both the functional-structural perspective and the empirical point of view of the civil society concept. Finally, the author attempts to formulate a justifiable framework for practical action and institutional provisions, both in the public and in the sphere of political power. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PUBLISHING , *BOOKSELLERS & bookselling , *PRINTERS (Persons) , *INTERPERSONAL relations , *GRAPHIC design - Abstract
The new Quebec publishers that emerged in the early 2000s present themselves in their discourse as having close ties with their authors, but also with other actors in the book chain, such as booksellers and printers. Without reducing this element to simple positioning, I would argue that the promotion of this outreach work, presented in the form of privileged interpersonal relationships, is a nodal point in the ethos of new publishers, who use it to set themselves apart from their elders, such as Boréal and Leméac. I will show how this “publication of proximityâ€? can be seen in the discourse of “emergingâ€? authors and publishers, particularly at Le Quartanier, Alto and Marchand de feuilles. Collaboration and proximity are at the foundation of the ethos of these publishing houses, these values being part of their collective image. Their camaraderie is embodied, for example, in pictures that show authors and their publishers participating in events or activitiesâ€"whether literary or not. Beyond the expected couple of the publisher and the author, we also highlight the proximity of many people involved in the book chain: booksellers, graphic designers, distributors, etc. In short, new publishers seem to be polishing their image by relying on multiple close collaborations as well as on editorial structures on a human scale, which seems central to the positioning of emerging publishers. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by primary pragmatic difficulties, out of step with verbal and non-verbal developmental level. This selective survey paper addresses three recent domains of research on pragmatic functions in autism. First, we provide an up-to-date discussion of how lack of sensitivity to social cues impacts early acquisition of words. Second, we review recent findings on the comprehension of non-literal language, pointing to a more refined clinical reality. Third, we describe recent developments in the study of conversation skills in autism.

Jean-Nicolas Trusson is well known in the history of Parisian pharmacy. Born in 1744 in Euville, in the vicinity of Commercy, in Lorraine, he was in near relations by his mother with Joseph Bataille, also well known and whose half-length portrait is exhibited in the "Salle des Actes" of the Faculty of Pharmacy in Paris. It seems that the extraction of Bataille is unknown. Our work indicates that he was born in october 1816 in Pagny-sur-Meuse, some kilometres from Euville towards Toul. Trusson was the successor of Bataille and he remained in his pharmacy until 1809 where his own successor was Nicolas Denis Moutillard. Moutillard's father was Joseph Moutillard, an apothecary of Commercy, whose mother was Jeanne Trusson, who was the first cousin of Jean-Nicolas Trusson's father. Then, Théodore Huraut, Moutillard's successor in Paris, was also born in Commercy, in year 1813. He studied pharmacy in Bar-le-Duc, then in Paris with Moutillard and at the school of pharmacy. Taking his place between 1840 and 1844, he became a member of the "Société d'émulation pour les sciences pharmaceutiques" and of the "Société de pharmacie de Paris". Beeing the author of more than twenty papers devoted to practical community pharmacy, Huraut died in Paris in 1855.

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder of childhood characterised by disturbances in both social interactions and communication as well as stereotyped patterns of activities and behaviour. The increase in estimates of the prevalence of autism has raised the question of an "epidemic" of autism. More active case assessment and changes in diagnostic criteria probably account in large part for such increase. Investigators have attempted to define the neural pathophysiology of autism ever since the hypothesis of "refrigerator mother" as its cause was replaced by the view that it is a developmental disorder of the immature brain. However consensus is yet to be reached concerning the brain regions implicated. Psychoanalysis, cognitive psychology, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, and genetics propose restricted view of the major issues leaving extensive areas unexplored. Therapeutic approaches induce only partial and uncertain results. There is no cure for autism but substantial evidence indicates that early, intensive, individualised education is beneficial for children. All modern intervention programs for autism affected children share a high degree of environmental structuring and predictability and an extensive individual approach. Autism being a behaviourally defined syndrome, it gave rise to a number of controversies concerning definition, classification, etiopathogenesis and therapeutics. In the 1990s a crisis has occurred in France with a loss of confidence between parents and psychiatrists with a problem concerning the means and ways of care of the autistic individual. The aim of this paper is to point out the different questions raised by autism in order to better understand this syndrome which touches upon essential behaviour-related aspects such as self consciousness, reality perception, the functioning of the thought and communication, as well as the role of hereditary and acquired influences in normal and pathological development.

Canada's population is composed of heterogenous ethnocultural communities. There is a need for information and educational initiatives on HIV and AIDS directed specifically at these communities. For such interventions to be effective we must determine the existing personal and sociocultural factors related to HIV transmission. There has been little such research in Canada. In this supplement we report on various aspects of a study conducted between May 1992 and December 1994 to determine the factors related to HIV transmission in several ethnocultural communities. This paper describes some innovative aspects of the project: the conceptual framework, the community participatory model, the use of a multi-method research design, and the ongoing communication strategy. The combination of these elements makes the study unique. The value of the study lies not only in the information obtained but also in the model it provides for future research in other settings.
