Which virtues and vices 19th century Brazilian public opinion used to evaluate legal books and scholars? The paper analyzed the texts published in Brazilian newspapers commenting on books of public law, which are called “evaluation literature”, to answer this question. Major virtues were: utility, clarity, method, moderation; minor ones were: originality, experience, abnegation etc. This chart of values can be derived from the objectives of Brazilian legal scholarship of the time: not an academic discipline defined by research, but a technical discourse aimed at professional instruction and public intervention.

To date, most debates about transdisciplinarity (TD) have been dominated by Western institutions. This paper proposes insights from the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN), Kyoto, Japan, from an investigation as a visiting scientist. After describing its unique project-based organization, I first show that the development of TD at RIHN faces some common challenges, such as TD evaluation, education and upscaling (beyond local contexts). Yet, collaborations with stakeholders have also unique specificities (importance of the group, rigidity of institutions, different ways of interacting…). Moreover, most RIHN researchers claim to have a particularly practical approach to TD. At the level of the whole institute, RIHN gives a strong emphasis on the premise that environmental problems are rooted in human cultures and values. RIHN also develops a specific approach to scales, in which Asia serves as a nodal point between the local and global (‘Asia vision’). We suggest that RIHN’s emphasis on cultural roots and its nodal approach to scale might be themselves rooted in the Japanese culture.

Universities, as knowledge intensive communities, seek to encourage multi-disciplinary research. Using a social capital framework, this paper explores the experiences of researchers from different disciplines within the Business and Law Schools at an Australian regional University. Social capital views organisations as a social community (community of practice) deriving distinctive advantage through speed and efficiency in creating, accessing, and transferring knowledge. Members of a multi-disciplinary research group combined complimentary viewpoints on the concept of ‘value’ to write a journal article on tension between different sections of society on an agreed topic. Undertaking a process of discussion, negotiation and debate to produce the article led to interesting ideas and viewpoints, new avenues of thought and “Eureka” moments, from which surfaced new ways of thinking about the problem. Using the reflections of the different team members, this paper shows how the information transfer across discipline boundaries and between quantitative and qualitative researchers can lead to a greater understanding of the complex web of societal life. This information transfer informs and enriches understandings of complex situations and assists the researchers to redefine problems outside of the normal boundaries of research.

Using professional knowledge in building scientific knowledge; a comparative analysis of several case studies. This paper results from cross-disciplinary reflection by social and biotechnical researchers engaged in surveys with experts from the agriculture and nature spheres: farmers: technical advisors, managers of nature conservation programmes and biologists. The purpose was to analyse the way professional knowledge is used by researchers to enrich their body of scientific knowledge. How professional knowledge is used depends in part on each scientific discipline, but far more on the final research aims. We first identified three ideotypes based on whether professional knowledge is used (1) in a comprehensive way to understand its origins, (2) to build new biological knowledge complementary to the one produced on an experimental basis, or (3) to build operational knowledge to help professionals manage their problems. A cross-analysis of the survey methods used then led to discussing the nature of the scientific knowledge developed from professional knowledge and the innovative potential of such surveys. Finally the heuristic potential of surveys is highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Various disciplines rely on the research interview as an investigative tool. The purpose of this paper is to analyse an example of this approach applied to the field of agronomy, with the aim of making a particular kind of expertise more accessible to outsiders. In our example, a vineyard worker is interviewed about vine pruning by two agronomists while he demonstrates the relevant skills on camera. The final purpose of this exercise is the creation of a multimedia program to be used in the teaching of vine pruning for beginners. Conversational analysis in the ethnomethodological tradition proves to be a useful tool for analysing this type of interview in terms of a social situation that is co-constructed by the vine pruning expert and the researchers as they talk together. The paper shows how the concepts developed by ethnomethodology have made it possible to take a critical look at the interview as a research tool, to develop an in-depth knowledge of how mutual understanding is achieved in such a situation, and to suggest ways of refining interviewing techniques even further. Using this as a background, the paper then analyses the specifics of this exchange. It shows how the participants come to agree on the exact meaning of specific terms through a series of adjustments and ratifications which are part and parcel of this type of exchange yet, unfortunately, are often overlooked when interviews are subsequently re-used. The study of this co-construction process takes into account verbal, vocal and visual aspects. This particular approach constitutes an original contribution to a better understanding of the various forms of “situated action” that may occur in interviews. It focuses especially on the processes used by the participants to highlight important information about vine pruning, and to relate it to the more general context of tending vineyards.

This paper describes the development of political science as an academic discipline in post-war France. In just a few years, Sciences Po, a professional school rather than a research institution, established by Executive Order in 1945 in order to “promote research”, has offered academic programmes and degrees, founded an academic journal, several editorial collections, a professional association, and created several research centres in political science. The post-war French academic context accounts for Sciences Po’s disciplinary investment, backed by the US philanthropic foundations which provided money, scientific recognition, and epistemic models.

Research background: Globalization and the processes associated with it are reflected in the constant changes taking place in the market and affect its individual participants, among whom we also include consumers. Globalization allows consumers to choose, but on the other hand, the quality of products intended for the Slovak market is debatable (dual quality of food). Therefore, many consumers distrust imported products and believe that foreign producers use unethical practices in the Slovak market. Purpose of the article: The paper presents the results of a survey of unethical practices towards Slovak consumers in their selected forms, as well as the results of the current state of awareness of Slovak consumers in the field of protection of their consumer rights. Methods: The data were obtained by a questionnaire and consequently evaluated by the chosen statistical methods. Some questions were formulated to test hypothesis of dependence among selected variables. Findings & Value added: The results point to the low state of Slovak consumer’s ability to detect unethical practices in its specific forms, as well as to the low state of his knowledge in the field of consumer rights protection. However, the finding that with higher consumer education the ability of a consumer to detect misleading practices increases confirmed the importance of incorporating selected areas of consumer policy into education at lower levels. It allows supporting the sovereignty of the Slovak consumer to protect his rights.

The dependence on foreign trade of China and European Union are both at a relatively high level, and the space for Sino-EU trade is still enormous. So, this paper adopts cointegration analysis and error correction model to study the relationship between Sino-EU trade and economic growth from a long-term and short-term perspective respectively. Cointegration analysis shows that: whether it is Sino-EU trade and China’s economic growth or Sino-EU trade and EU’s economic growth, there exists long-term cointegration relationship between them. Sino-EU trade plays a more important role in economic growth of China than its role in stimulating economic growth of European Union. Error correction model demonstrates that Sino-EU trade may deviate from its long-run equilibrium with economic growth in the short run.

"The goal of this paper is to review those explanatory models that dominate social demography in Quebec. The classical organization of demography, which calls upon the three components of demographic reproduction--fertility, migration and mortality--is followed. The concluding part of the paper deals with the concept of 'demographic regime', which aims to bring the three components together into an overall theory of demographic reproduction. The paper shows that if the functionalist and empirical tradition (mostly American) has dominated the field of demography for a very long time, feminist and materialistic approaches have recently appeared for the interpretation of demographic realities." The Rockefeller Foundation played a great role in the development of social sciences in France during the interwar period, not only through its important financial support to many research institutes, but also through its intellectual cooperation with French academics in order to build collective research programs irrigated by the paradigm of empiric-quantitative research, and to develop the coordination of works undertaken in all institutes.

"This brief paper identifies the most important moments and the most significant studies of Italian historiography on emigration. These range from the first formulation of economic and national models of the Italian exodus to their subsequent fragmentation into a mosaic of regional and local historical and anthropological studies. Ultimately, this will allow a much needed conceptual synthesis, aiming at new comparative research objectives, and a less specialized and sectorial analysis of emigration. Such an approach would also help us to tackle the migrational phenomena in contemporary society with a greater historical awareness and with more adequate cultural comprehension." This paper provides an overview of the principal findings of recent Inter-university Population Research Centre studies of the Northeast part of Quebec province (Canada), and particularly the Saguenay region. These studies may be classified as the social history of population, historical demography, and population genetics. The purpose of the research is to study the population dynamics at the regional level from the 18th to the 20th centuries, to examine the structure and evolution of the gene pool. Focus is place on several defective genes, which cause very severe diseases in those regions of Quebec. The authors illustrate how population studies as such can help genetic epidemiology and preventive actions in general as well as ethical and legal issues raised by an approach relying on the use of a population register.

"This article outlines a new system for computerized family reconstitution. It has been developed in the last ten years by a multidisciplinary team of Quebec researchers belonging to the inter-university research center on populations (SOREP). Basically, this system is characterized by: a) an attempt to computerize as much as possible every step involved in the process of reconstitution, b) a set of tools devised for identifying and measuring all forms and degrees of similarity between names and surnames, c) a technique to process cases of ambiguous links, d) a set of programs used to assess the quality of the data and the strength of the links created, [and] e) an attempt to maximize the performance of the linkage work in terms of both efficiency and accuracy. The system has been designed to support several kinds of analyses, from social history and demography to population genetics. Our paper contains a brief overview of the current state of research in the field of record linkage, an introduction to the Saguenay [Canada] population register and a description of the system itself which has been utilized successfully in the last year on the 660,000 Saguenay parish records, covering the period 1842-1971." "This paper examines two methods of indirectly estimating mortality: the Bourgeois-Pichat method (estimation of life expectancy at birth), and the Bourbeau and Legare method.... This last method consists of estimating various past mortality measures, for a given population, by examining these same measures as they were observed in certain other populations, during the period in question." These methods are applied to Norwegian data for 1826-1976. The results are then compared with data observed during the same period. The findings are used to evaluate the two methods and assess their advantages and disadvantages. However, the emphasis is on the Bourbeau and Legare method. (summary in ENG, SPA)

"This paper presents a statistical analysis of surnames, revealing a striking similarity between the Saguenay and Charlevoix regions in the province of Quebec, since the 19th century. Indeed, a migration study also shows that the former region was created in the 1840's by immigrants coming mostly from the latter. An analysis by decade also shows that the Saguenay population structure has remained relatively stable since the middle of the 19th century. It is suggested that this kind of surnames analysis may be a useful indicator not only of the dynamics of a population, but also of the evolution of the whole gene pool. It seems however to reflect very poorly the movement or diffusion of any deleterious gene in particular." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND SPA)

After 1st stressing the complexity of explaining child mortality, a short overview of the various approaches to the problem is given. Included in the overview is research undertaken in different areas directly or indirectly concerned--particularly epidemiology and demography, but also in medical sciences, medical sociology, and anthropology. The purpose of this review is to point out the lack of coherence and shortcomings of research. Are they really explanatory or merely descriptive? Do they use the relevant techniques of observation and statistical analysis according to the objectives: Are they well integrated, without ambiguity, into the framework of a methodologically coherent thought? To many of these questions, the answer is often negative. To the partitioning of the different sciences concerning child mortality, this paper opposes the absolute necessity of a multidisciplinary approach, which should at the same time carry on the theoretical reflection on the cause of this complex phenomenon, and elaborate all research programs on the matter. Since the 1990s, the government of Quebec has undertaken a shift called virage ambulatoire (ambulatory care) in its delivery of health care and social care services. In response to a number of coordination related problems between interprofessional and interinstitutional actors engendered by the implementation of this ambulatory, or home- centric model, Quebec's Ministry of Health and Social Services decided to implement a major reform pertaining to services integration. This involved the creation of different coordination devices, including the professional device of case management. This article analyses how case management, in the specific context of integrated care networks for frail elderly individuals, contributes to home-centric governmental policies. We conducted a qualitative exploratory study using an embedded case study design. In each of the three Health and Social Services Centres covered by our study, we used three data collection methods: a documentary analysis, face-to-face interviews, and direct observation of case mangers practices. We note that coordination with hospitals remains at the center of case managers' activities, diverting in part their function regarding home care towards hospitals' needs, where rapid discharge planning of short-term care beds is still viewed as a priority., Problematique A l'instar d'autres pays, le Quebec a mise depuis le milieu des annees 1990 sur l'adoption d'un modele ambulatoire de services de sante et de services sociaux, que nous [...]
