Background: The objective was to describe a possible cancer mortality risk in relation with the occupational exposure within an International study co-ordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer., Methods: An epidemiological cohort study was set up to assess the mortality in four French pulp and paper companies. The four cohorts were followed up from January 1st 1968 to December 31st 1992. The causes of death were ascertained by matching with the national file of causes of death., Results: The full cohort consisted in 5,529 men and 876 women. The total numbers of subjects deceased between 1968 and 1992 were respectively 708 and 34. Causes of death could be traced for 98%. The observed mortality was significantly lower than the expected for all causes of deaths (SMR = 0.86) as well for all deaths by cancer (SMR = 0.87). The analysis by departments showed an excess mortality by cancer of the pancreas in the wood preparation department (SMR = 3.14) as well as in the paper production department (SMR = 2.04)., Conclusions: In absence of any prior hypothesis, it is difficult to assign an occupational origin to these observed excesses. The future results of the international study will enable us to interpret these results more precisely.

The article analyzes the relation between slavery and the structures and practices of law with reference to a story of a woman named Rosalie who, in the late 18th century, was deported as a slave to the French colony of Saint-Domingue (modern day Haïti). Efforts made by Rosalie in regaining her liberty are highlighted. Role of law and judicial processes in upholding and challenging the structures of caste and white supremacy that emerged after the end of slavery is discussed.

The article discusses the publication of various edition of the book "Fleurs du Mal" by Charles Baudelaire first published in 1857 ant then in 1861 is a collection of poems that deals with themes related to decadence and eroticism. Topics include it importance in symbolist and modernist movements and literary criticism of the poems.

The article provides information on the seminar conducted by the 2023 RIODD Congress (International Network on Organizations and Sustainable Development), scheduled for October 17-10, 2023, in Lille, France, on the topic of "Sustainability of Human Societies and their Ecosystems".

The concept of integrated services delivery, although dating from the 1990s, has only recently appeared in French public health policy. To clarify the concept and its adaptation to the reality of the French systems of healthcare and social services, the French Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology established an interdisciplinary working group. This article reports that group's findings according to three axes: the definition of integration, the objectives of this organizational approach and the means needed to achieve them. Analysis of the literature indicated that integration is a process that aims to overcome the fragmentation of services for vulnerable people. This process requires a multilevel approach, particularly concerning how to modify public policies and financing systems. Notably, all relevant levels need to develop shared processes, tools, resources, finance, interventions and returns on the latter. Indeed, this sharing is the ultimate proof of evolution towards integration. In the second part of the position paper, its authors have developed arguments that could lead professionals and non-professional caregivers to adopt integrated care as an answer to their aspirations. Policy-maker perspectives and politicians are also analyzed. Bearing in mind that integrated care necessarily will always involve a human component which may find expression during individual case-management; relations between integration and case managements are clarified. Finally, lessons learned from national and international experiments are examined. Results suggest that integrated care must to be accompanied by a local pilot. Results of recent experiments have shown that it is possible to initiate a dynamic towards integrated care in France and hence join the international movement towards adapting our healthcare systems to new challenges.

In this first part of the position paper, its authors analyzed integrated care definitions used in international literature in view of designing the most important components of integrated care. The examination of this concept must be articulated with the idea of "coordination" which has been the cornerstone of the majority of public policies applied to the field of geriatrics and gerontology since the 1960s in France. The components of integrated care highlight that it is an ambitious process leading to real systemic modification. The authors also have proposed to open up a dialogue between citizens' aspirations and integrated care objectives with the aim to verify that the latter respond to the needs as expressed by the targeted group.

Processed baby foods designed for infants (4-12 months) and toddlers (12-36 months) (excluding infant formula, follow-on formula, the so-called growing-up milks, and cereal-based foods for infants), which are referred to as baby foods, are specific products defined by a European regulation (Directive 2006/125/CE). According to this Directive, such foods have a composition adapted to the nutritional needs of children of this age and should comply with specifications related to food safety in terms of ingredients, production processes, and prevention of infectious and toxicological hazards. Hence, they differ from ordinary foods and from non-specific processed foods. This market segment includes the full range of foods that can be part of children's diet: dairy products (dairy desserts, yoghurts, and fresh cheese), sweet products (nondairy desserts, fruit, and drinks), and salty products (soups, vegetable-based foods, meat, fish, and full dishes). This market amounted to 89,666 MT in France in 2011 and 83,055 MT in 2010 (a total of 325,524 MT in the 27 countries of the European Union in 2010, including 90,438 MT in Germany, 49,144 MT in Spain, and 40,438 MT in Italy). The consumption of baby foods in France varies with infant age and parental choice. Baby foods account for 7 % of total energy intake at 4-5 months, 28 % at 6-7 months, 27 % at 8-11 months, 17 % at 1-17 months, and 11 % at 18-24 months. Among parents, 24 % never offer their children any baby foods, 13 % do so 1-3 days/week and 63 % 4-7 days/week. Among consumers, 55 % of children eat more than 250 g/day of baby foods. As baby foods only account for a minor fraction of overall food intake, their impact on the quality of young children's diet is much less than that of growing-up milks, particularly for preventing insufficient iron and vitamin D intake. Their consumption, however, has an indirect benefit on the nutritional quality of the diet and on food safety, particularly regarding toxicological hazards, as it postpones the introduction of non-specific processed foods, which are inadequate for this age group owing to both their nutritional composition and lower food safety control. Baby foods represent a family of products meeting parents' expectations and adapted to infants and young children. They are clearly beneficial in terms of food safety, but the nutritional benefit to be expected from their consumption is minimal: their main advantage is postponing or decreasing the consumption of non-specific industrially processed foods., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Masson SAS. This study seeks to assess the extent to which die digital book market is structuring independently from the print edition market by comparing the pricing of 559 digital and print French and American bestsellers during 2011. Two pricing methods are distinguished: "homothetic pricing," where the digital pricing is a reflection of the print pricing, and "heterothetic pricing," where the digital price is set according to new rules. The French and American markets do not have the same propensity to overcome the pricing practices in the print book market: While the French market's e-book structure is mirroring that of the print book industry, die American market tends to be more independent. This can be explained by die significant structural, legal, and institutional differences between the publishing industries of both countries. Writing and publishing papers in radiology journals are mandatory for academic promotion and also contribute to the education of radiological community. The redaction of a scientific radiology paper is based on strict criteria that are also used by reviewers from the editorial board. In this article, the different steps in the construction and redaction of a radiology paper will be reviewed. Unlabelled: The meeting of the French Association of Urology (AFU) occurs once a year. Some communications are consequently published in national or international journals. We analysed the criteria of publication of works communicated during the AFU meeting., Material: We analysed all the communications of the 94th and the 95th meeting of AFU from years 2000 and 2001, identified from the Progrès en urologie supplements. We then asked Medline covering a period of time from January 1996 to December 2006 and then compared communications to similar published articles., Results: The overall publication rate was 34.5%. Articles (38.6%) were published the year following the meeting but the main articles were published the following 2 years after the meeting (78.42%). The mean time for publication was 16.9months. The prospective studies had a publication rate of 44.1% versus 24.8% for retrospective studies. One article over five was published in Progrès en urologie (21.6%)., Conclusions: Only one third of communications of the French meeting of urology was then published. Twenty percent were published in Progrès en urologie. Different way could increase the publication rate. The time for publication, higher for this meeting than for others, may decrease with the new submission website.

Résumé: Les aliments industriels destinés aux nourrissons (4–12 mois) et enfants en bas âge (1–3ans) (en dehors des laits infantiles et des céréales), dénommés aussi aliments pour bébés, se distinguent des aliments industriels non spécifiques conçus pour les adultes et des aliments courants par des critères stricts de composition et de sécurité sanitaire définis par la réglementation française et européenne. Évaluée en France à 89 666 tonnes en 2011 l’offre commerciale pour ces denrées vise à répondre à tous les besoins alimentaires des jeunes enfants : produits laitiers, denrées salées et sucrées, adaptés à l’âge (composition, texture, portions). Les aliments pour bébés ne représentent qu’une part modérée des apports alimentaires des 4–36 mois. Exprimés en pourcentage de l’apport énergétique total, ils constituent en moyenne 7 % de la consommation à 4–5 mois, 28 % à 6–7 mois, 27 % à 8–11 mois, 17 % à 12–17 mois, 11 % à 18–24 mois. Vingt-quatre pour cent des parents n’en donnent jamais à leur enfant, 13 % 1 à 3j/semaine et 63 % 4 à 7j/semaine. Même chez les gros consommateurs, les aliments pour bébés ont peu d’effets sur la qualité nutritionnelle du régime. Cependant, leur emploi retarde et diminue l’utilisation des aliments industriels non spécifiques, ce qui peut contribuer à réduire les risques nutritionnels et toxicologiques liés à la consommation de ces denrées chez les jeunes enfants. Cadet de Vaux, in partnership with Louis Dussieux and Olivier de Carancez, was the creator of the first French daily news paper, on the 1st of January 1877. Cadet had the responsibility of the scientific section. Several lampoons were written against the three directors of the paper. The paper was momentarily suppressed two times, because of non convenient contributions, and it was stopped his activities in the paper.

Betaradiography, an identification process which satisfies the current requirements for the study of watermarks was systematically investigated in the Graphic Arts Department of the Louvre museum. The curves obtained in this context allowing the evaluation of the weight of sheets using the C-14 plate used for betaradiography and those allowing evaluation of the exposure time as a function of the weight and the choice of films were found to be essential tools for the rational use of this method. Lastly, a filming apparatus adapted to drawings has been developed allowing the first perfectly conclusive betagraphic films in the Drawing Collection.

Between 1979 and 1983, 959 hypothyroid infants were discovered by the neonatal screening program in France. Sixteen had filter-paper TSH levels between 30 and 50 microU/ml: one was athyroid, ectopic thyroid in 5,10 had thyroids in place. These latter 16 cases argue for a second TSH control-value for filter paper TSH values between 30 and 50 microU/ml.

Screening for neonatal hypothyroidism has been undertaken in Southern France by the estimation of T4 in the eluates of blood spots on filter paper. Since March 1976, 14,000 estimations have been made and four cases of hypothyroidism with very low levels of T4 have been detected (less than 38 pg/2 spots). Two cases had high TSH levels (greater than 200 microunits/2 spots). Blood was taken from the hypothyroid babies on the 20th day of life, to check the findings and in all cases the thyroxine was less than 2.8 microgrammes/100 ml and the TSH greater than 40 microunits/ml. T3 was reduced in three cases (less than 75 pg/ml) and normal in one case (150 pg/ml). In all cases no thyroid tissue could be demonstrated with technitium scan. In the first month of life there were practically no symptoms except for mottling of the skin in two cases, a large posterior fontanelle in two cases and in one baby a prolonged neonatal jaundice.

Systematic screening for congenital hypothyroidism was started in Lyon in september 1976. This screening was coupled with PKU, using the same dried blood samples on filter paper obtained on the 5th day of life. TSH levels were determined by radioimmunoassay adapted for dried blood samples (Kit Abbott). In 24 months, 56 176 samples were analyzed. The critical level calling for control was successively raised from from 20 to 30, now 40 microUI/ml of serum. A high level of TSH was found in 307 children (0,55%). Pathological deliveries were found in most of these infants (neonatal injury, cesarean, section forceps or ocytocic perfusion, neonatal icterus) and a second or a third measurement showed normal TSH level. Congenital hypothyroidism, was found detected in 18 infants: 12 ectopic gland, 5 athyreosis and 1 dyshormonogenesis. Treatment was begun at a mean age of 38 days (29 to 50 days).

A simultaneous determination of T4 and TSH has been done on 48 000 new borns since January 1st of 1977 in the Midi-Pyrénées district. 15 cases of hypothyroidism have been detected, an incidence of 1/3 200 new borns. TSH values always were above 80 microU/ml; T4 values are under m-2 sigma in 11 cases, normal in 2 cases (8,8 and 9 micrograms/dl) and between -1 and - 2 sigma in 2 cases. A thyroid scanning with 123 odine or 99 Tech, has shown the absence of thyroid in 6 cases, an ectopic gland in 7 cases and a thyroid in a normal position in one case. A treatment has been possible before the first month of life in each case. The average D.Q. for the seven oldest new borns (m = 11 months) is 96. The simultaneous determination of T4 and TSH is a sensitive and specific screening method for hypothyroidism. False-negative are avoided and the number of false-positive results is reduced. All cases of hypothyroidism can be detected (primary hypothyroidism, hypothalamo-hypopituitary hypothyroidism, TBG deficiency, etc...) Then, an early and certain diagnosis is made possible (T4 low and TSH increased).
