Institutions, historians and the general public are interested in image collections as objects relating to an historic memory or to current social issues. Collections of images reveal certain traits specific to the Web that construct a scene that is useful to decode and to understand the characteristics of information and the communication associated with the publication of the document and its retrieval. Whether it be in a traditional format found in a library, or in the form of sites using cooperative and social indexing, or when images play a paradoxical role, as is the case of personal blogs, the use of these images can only urge the serious iconographer to study the contents as well as the collection itself.
