The reuse of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in producing Portland cement concrete (PCC) is a modern technique that offers several technical, economic, and environmental advantages. However, the incorporation of this waste material in PCC results in a decrease in its mechanical performance due to a reduction in adhesion in the transition zone between RAP and cement paste. A large experimental study carried out on PCC mixes incorporating different percentages of RAP made it possible to quantify the effects of RAP content on the mechanical properties of concrete (compressive strength, indirect tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity). In addition, and in order to predict the tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of RAP concrete, two existing models were used. Modelling results confirmed the experimental findings by showing that the incorporation of RAP in PCC decreases its tensile strength as well as it modulus of elasticity. The models seem therefore to be appropriate for predicting mechanical properties of RAP concretes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
