- Abstract

The Law 12.305/2010 created the National Politics for Solid Waste (NPSW), decisively contributing towards the minimization of solid waste and residue volumes generated. The present study proposes an analysis of the applicability of the shared responsibility principle for the life cycle of the product adhesive, as well as intends to indicate preventive waste management actions for the adhesive industry, moreover in the contractual part under the optics of civil responsibility. The research is qualitative and uses the inductive method supported by bibliography and documental research. The results point out the relevance of environmental responsibility of all the parties involved in the productive and consumer process of the adhesive. However, evidence showed the fragility of NPSW due to the abstract risk. Lastly, preventive environmental management actions are indicated, with emphasis to the inclusion of contractual environmental clauses in the legal contracts celebrated by the adhesive industry with its providers, partners and clients.

Glossy retouching is one of the restoration problems which occur with unvarnished acrylic emulsion paintings. Due to the sensitivity to many solvents, every glossy retouching technique has to be avoided because they are not compatible. These investigations have compared the optical abilities of a few water-soluble polymers mixed with water and pigments. The optical feature, the stability and the compatibility of Aquazol 200 have been more deeply evaluated in a scientific way.

This research focuses on two issues : 1° The possibility to use UV-crosslinkable adhesives to bond transparent coloured glass. 2° The glass bonding is very complex when the parts to be joined are thin, fragile, and when the bonding surface is reduced to a few millimetres in size. In this case, the mechanical strength of the bonding and the speed of the curing process of the adhesive are the first criteria to be taken into account to ensure a reliable final bonding.

Successful adhesive technology relies on the diligent engineering of adhesive and cohesive forces. Polymers thereby play the dominant role as they largely determine the chemical and physical properties of the adhesive joint. A wide range of polymer systems is available, each having special properties in its own right. The art of adhesive formulation lies in the right choice of the appropriate polymer and its modification to suit the purpose. This article provides several examples of adhesive applications in demanding industry segments.

Summary: Microvascular surgery has become an important method for reconstructing surgical defects due to trauma, tumors or after burn. The most important factor for successful free flap transfer is a well-executed anastomosis. The time needed to perform the anastomosis and the failure rate are not negligible despite the high level of operator''s experience. During the history, many alternatives were tried to help the microsurgeon and to reduce the complications. A Medline literature search was performed to find articles dealing with non-suture methods of microvascular anastomosis. Many historical books were also included. The non-suture techniques can be divided into four groups based on the used mechanism of sutures: double intubation including tubes and stents, intubation–eversion including simple rings, double eversion including staples and double rings, and wall adjustement with adhesives or laser. All these techniques were able to produce a faster and easier microvascular anastomosis. Nevertheless, disadvantages of the suturless techniques include toxicity, high cost, leakage or aneurysm formation. More refinement is needed before their widespread adoption. Thus, laser-assisted microvascular anastomosis using 1,9μm diode laser appeared to be a safe and reliable help for the microsurgeon and may be further developed in the near future. CANVAS relining , *PRESERVATION of painting , *INPAINTING , *GLUE , *TYLOSES , *ADHESIVES - Abstract
The reversibility of linings of paintings on canvas is a perennial problem for conservators of the support. In this study, the author investigates the adhesive properties of a series of glues based on Plextol B 500 and Tylose MH 300. The methods chosen are based on the tests for peel and shear defined by ASTM and AFNOR standards. After defining the ideal requirements for adhesion, the introduction attempts to quantify the amount of glue strictly necessary, using a mixture of 20% Plextol B 500 and 80% Tylose, and to identify the various types of rupture. Next, the influence of the proportion of the constituents in the mixture on peel and shear strength is investigated. In the peel test, for a polyester canvas glued to a linen canvas using the series of adheSiVes based on Plextol and Tylose, an increase in the percentage of Plextol gives both greater compatibility with the polyester and better reversibility. On the other hand, only a small quantiy of Plextol ts required to provide maximum adhesiveness. The last part of the study deals with the adhensive properties of the various materials used for lining. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We consider the flexural static behavior of two coplanar Kirchhoff–Love plates bonded by a thin third one, softer and narrower. In the case of perfect adhesion or unilateral conditions between the adherents and the adhesive, we study the asymptotic behavior of the assembly when the stiffness and the narrowness of the intermediate plate tend to zero. This thesis presents a mainly experimental study of the stick-slip instability during the peeling of adhesive tape.We developed different experimental set-ups, allowing us to observe directly the jerky dynamics during peeling. The experiments are conducted at an imposed velocity and different geometries: the adhesive is peeled directly from a roller, or from a flat substrate at a fixed angle. On the one hand, we highlight the existence of strong dynamical effects, which cannot be understood with the existing theoretical models. On the other hand, we show the crucial effect of the peeling angle on the instability, which is strongly reduced at large angles (both its amplitude and range of existence decrease). Besides, a new theoretical approach, taking into account the ribbon inertia, can allow us to understand partially the experimental observations. Finally, we show that the stick-slip instability is multi-scale: a secondary instability can occur at spatial and temporal scales smaller than the usually observed stick-slip. While the main instability is due to variations of the stretching elastic energy, this secondary instability is driven by the release of the bending energy stored in the ribbon., Cette thèse de doctorat présente une étude essentiellement expérimentale de l'instabilité de stick-slip lors du pelage d'adhésifs.

The aim of this article is to indicate the relation between matter and an idea within a work of art – three-dimensional painting which involves untypical and undurable techniques. The essay introduces the problem of retaining the idea throughout the proper preserving of the substance while taking considerable care of its authenticity and complying with the rules of restoration ethical code. The author suggests solutions for working with non-standard objects which are exposed to destruction to a much bigger extent than traditional, flateasel painting.

Faced with the works of Antoine Wiertz, a question arises: Is the washed-out and mat appearance of some of his paintings an artistic intent, or a consequence of alteration. Painted with a technique developed by the artist to achieve a matt appearance, these works are in fact subject to a slow degradation process. Based on the artist’s writings, his particular painting process was reproduced and analysed scientifically. This study concludes that the appearance of those artworks is not a result of the artist’s intent but caused by the combined action of various changes inherent to the painter’s technique.

The removal of corrosion products from archaeological gilded copper alloys lead to high risks of damage. A mechanical cleaning may induce abrasions of the gilding when a chemical cleaning might increase the corrosion processes. In this thesis, we have tested the use of laser as an alternative for the removal of corrosion products on gilded copper alloy. Three lasers Nd:YAG were used during our tests : a laser Short free running, a laser Long Q-switch and a laser Q-switch. The tests have been done on gilded copper samples prepared after two pre-Columbian masks. The results prove that lasers don’t permit the removal of corrosion products without damage on the gilded surface. However a laser with a faster pulse like a femtosecond laser may allow the cleaning of gilded copper without any damage

Non-invasive monitoring of oxygen saturation by pulse oxymetry (SpO(2)) is sometimes perturbed on fingers during shock states. Other sites are possible (toes, forehead, nose, ear). Self-adhesive standard digital sensors are commonly used off-label in these sites. We have assessed their reliability for all of these sites. We have studied patients presenting a stabilized shock state and receiving vasoconstrictive catecholamines. When an arterial blood gas was ordered, six SpO(2) were measured quasi-simultaneously (self-adhesive standard sensors): right and left index, toe, forehead, nose and ear. SpO(2) at "finger", "toe", "forehead", "nose" and "ear" were compared to the arterial oxygen saturation (SaO(2)) by using the Bland and Altman method. The plethysmographic curve was assessed as "correct" or "unsatisfactory".Hundred and ten patients were included (63 ± 15 years, SAPSII 46 ± 16, catecholamines: 0.6 ± 0.5 μg/kg/min). Plethysmographic curves are more often of "correct" quality for fingers (90%) than for the other locations (50 to 70%). Bias are low for all the locations (-0.1 to +1.5%). Limits of agreement are around ±5% for fingers and toes, but as high as ±15% for the face locations. When the analysis is restricted to plethysmographic curves of "good" quality, the limits of agreement are unchanged for fingers and toes, but improved (between ±5 to ±10%) for face locations. In patients with a shock receiving vasoconstrictive catecholamines, the reliability of SpO(2) measurements with standard sensors appears better for fingers than for toes and face locations. These standard sensors should be discouraged for facial measurement because of their low reliability, even when the plethysmographic curve seems correct. Sensors specifically designed for each facial site exist, and their reliability should be estimated in patients receiving vasoconstrictive catecholamines.

This study deals with some researches carried out about the use of various natural materials as a source of raw material for the manufacturing of green adhesives for the industry of panel. In this context, work consisted in:(i)Evaluation of the potential of various tannins coming from barks wastes and development of adhesives containing tannins and various hardeners.(ii)Evaluation of the lignin potential from various origins and development of adhesives containing tannin from mimosa and lignin.(iii)Development of adhesives containing tannin and gluten protein.(iv)Evaluation of formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOC) from particleboards manufactures with the natural adhesives previously developed.Thermomechanical analyses, spectroscopy CP-MAS 13C NRM, matrix- assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectroscometry (MALDI-TOF) and gelling time techniques were performed for evaluation and characterization of these adhesives. Internal bond test for the evaluation of adhesives mechanical resistance according to the standard EN-312 were also carried out.

Ovarian artery aneurysms are extremely rare, only 17 cases having been published till now. They usually present with rupture during delivery or in the immediate post-partum. We report a case of asymptomatic, unruptured ovarian artery aneurysm in a 40-year-old woman. Diagnosis was achieved by computed tomography performed for an unrelated reason and confirmed by angiography. Transcatheter arterial embolization using coils and glue excluded the lesion. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an asymptomatic ovarian artery aneurysm, diagnosed outside a context of rupture.

The study presented in this manuscript deals with the durability of bonded joints in warm and humid environment. The aim of this work was to build a numerical tool able to predict the mechanical behaviour of aged bonded joints to validate their design. In order to achieve this, an important experimental study is carried out on an epoxy filled with elastomer adhesive and steel/epoxy/steel single lap joints intended for the automotive industry. A physically justified non linear diffusion model able to predict the ingress of water and relative stress and strain in the bulk adhesive, and a coupled thermohydro- mechanical behaviour law for the bulk adhesive have been built on the basis of these experimental results. These laws have been integrated in a finite element model able to create a tensile/shear load on the bonded joint before or after aging. The effect of aging on adhesive and/or interface in the assembly is then discussed to improve the understanding of experiments., Une étude sur la durabilité d'assemblages collés en milieu chaud et humide est proposée dans ce manuscrit.

The impact of the use of biological and synthetic glues in cardiac surgery was assessed by an economic and medical study. The observational prospective study had duration of three months. All the patients undergoing cardiac surgery were included in the study. The end points were medical (blood transfusion) and economic (duration and cost of the stay in hospital). There were 2 groups: treated or not by glues.T Student tests.Among 154 patients, the 2 principal indications were valvular replacement (48%) and coronary artery bypass grafting (37%). Fifty seven (37%) patients received a glue. The number of transfused globular units and the duration of the stay in the intensive care unit were significantly higher (p0.05) by treated patients. Not only the use of glues did not decrease the post-operative bleedings but it increased also the cost of the stay in hospital. Guidelines were validated by the hospital Commission on drugs.

Percutaneous renal biopsy is frequently used in diagnosis of renal dysfunction. Nevertheless, complications, mostly vascular, may occur. Treatment must be minimally invasive with nephron preservation, especially in kidney failure. We present an interesting therapeutic approach with highly selective catheterization under gadolinium and glue embolization, leading to total cure of iatrogenic fistula without renal deterioration.

Today, manufacturers provide the orthodontist with a range of adhesive systems which is so wide that is often difficult for the orthodontist to make his choice between them. The adhesive systems fall into four categories: traditional hydrophobic bonding systems, hydrophilic bonding systems, self-etching bonding systems, resin-modified glass ionomer-cements. This article will attempt to examine the first three categories which correspond to those of the composite bonding systems. Following a presentation of bonding assembling and of the required specification of the bonding systems used in orthodontic practice, the three composite bonding systems will be examined along with their advantages/disadvantages before a closing description of the corresponding clinical protocol to be followed. Whenever one of our laboratory experiments enables us to provide experimental evidence, a presentation is made within the related chapters.

The aim of this study was to assess the incidence on the enamel behavior of debonding two types of orthodontic brackets, bonded with two different adhesives. Ninety recently extracted human premolars were bonded with two types of brackets (30 Minitrim and 60 Discovery). Two bonding protocols were used. The first one consisted in bonding 30 Minitrim and 30 Discovery brackets on etched and dried enamel surfaces with No Mix orthodontic resin. The second one consisted in bonding 30 Discovery brackets on unetched and wet enamel surfaces with a modified glass ionomer cement, Fuji Ortho LC. Teeth were stored in hydrated ambiance at 37 degrees C for 7 days before debonding. A LLOYD (LR 30K) testing machine was used to evaluate the orthogonal tensile bond strength. The debonded base brackets were examined with a scanning electron microscope (JEOL JSM 6400) and qualitatively analyzed with an OXFORD-LINK-ISIS to assess the site of bond failure and the enamel detachments. An Enamel Detachment Index (EDI) was defined. The results showed that the types of orthodontics brackets and adhesives influenced the bond strength and the enamel detachment. The Discovery/No Mix couple presented higher bond strength (214.9 N) than observed with the Discovery/Fuji Ortho LC (98.5 N) or the Minitrim/No Mix (82.3 N) couples. The surfaces of enamel detachment were insignificant and not extended for all brackets. Nevertheless, the Discovery/No Mix couple presented 42% of an EDI score of 1, compared to the Discovery/Fuji Ortho LC and Minitrim/No Mix couples which presented, respectively, 8% an 20% of an EDI score of 1. The laser sculpted base (Discovery) bonded on unetched and wet enamel surfaces with the modified glass ionomer cement (Fuji Ortho LC) offers a good resistance to debonding forces and preserve enamel integrity.

Pityriasis versicolor is a superficial mycosis uncommonly reported in children. It occurs frequently in warm humid climates. Clinical diagnosis can be confirmed by mycology examination of a biopsy sample or a patch-test. The aim of our work was to assess the frequency of pityriasis versicolor in children in our region and ascertain the contribution of the cutaneous patch test and its diagnostic specificity.A retrospective analysis was conducted in patients meeting the following inclusion criteria over a 5-year period: age14 years, clinical presentation compatible with pityriasis versicolor, a positive patch-test. Age, sex, clinical features and favoring factors were recorded for all patients. Patch tests were performed in a control group of age-matched children with eczema or vitiligo.Pityriasis versicolor was diagnosed in 1,379 cases during the study period including 164 children (11.8 p. 100). Age varied from 5 months to 14 years (mean 11 years), with a slight female predominance. Facial lesions were the most frequent (n = 78; 47.5 p. 100), preferentially on the forehead (n = 53; 68 p. 100). An achromic and hypochromic aspect predominated (n = 118; 72 p. 100). The adhesive tape tests were negative in all controls.Pityriasis versicolor is exceptional in children in our region. The adhesive tape test provides a specific diagnostic tool. Preferential facial localization and predominant achromic and hypochromic aspect are characteristic of childhood pityriasis versicolor in our region. These 2 features are also reported in the literature. Childhood cases suggests the pathogenic factors involved in pityriasis versicolor should be reconsidered. Pityriasis versicolor should be included in the differential diagnosis of childhood hypopigmentation of the face.

Cyanoacrylate glues are more and widely used in the industry because of easy handling and great sticking power. These very volatile and chemically reactive glues may not only cause contact eczema, but also rhinitis and asthma. Nineteen cases of asthma have been reported to date. We report two new cases of occupational asthma as well as one case of urticaria, a clinical symptom not yet described, to our knowledge. In the three cases, diagnosis was made based on a compatible medical history and positive realistic exposure tests. The mechanism is still unknown, due to the physical properties of cyanoacrylate glues; in fact, it is not possible to perform prick tests or specific IgE measurements. Besides the usual preventive measures, maintaining a relative humidity greater than 55% seems to induce polymerization of free monomers of alkyl cyanoacrylate, thereby reducing their volatility. Rhinitis and asthma due to cyanoacrylate glue may receive compensation as occupational diseases in France.
