In La novela luminosa (2005), the last great narrative project of Uruguayan Mario Levrero, an ambivalent relationship with the space of the everyday is exposed. Everyday life appears, in the first place, as a disturbing dimension that reminds the protagonist of his finitude, that is, his precarious state, both economically and in terms of physical-psychic health. Secondly, however, it is these same unstable conditions of the everyday that also stimulate the feeling of ‘heroic’ resistance exhibited by the protagonist of the autofictional text. La novela luminosa thus pays an ambiguous homage – of acceptance and rejection at the same time – to a daily routine to which its author, on the threshold of old age and close to death, ends up clinging, in spite of everything and until the end, in order to leave testimony of his life as an author by means of a writing that ironizes his own status as a fragmented work.

This article is about gerontological proverbs in Swahili folkloric discourses. The question posed in this study is as follows: how is old age depicted according to Swahili paremiology? To answer this question, 49 popular Swahili gerontological proverbs have been analysed. The findings show that Swahili gerontological proverbs, like other non-Western gerontological proverbs, pay due respect to elders who are considered wise, knowledgeable, and experienced. How someone is perceived to be an elder is largely socially and culturally constructed. There are several Swahili gerontological proverbs that are equivalent to proverbs in different cultures and languages including Russian, German, Yiddish, French, Chinese, Arabic, and others. This research report has been reviewed by the editors of the special issue but has not been externally peer-reviewed.

People’s lives have been significantly affected by COVID-19, including the elderly, who have sought to limit personal contact, especially during quarantine periods. Their shopping habits, and their daily lives changed, too. The basis of my research was a longitudinal study conducted by the Department of Gerontology of the University of Debrecen, Faculty of Health Sciences. I conducted a two-region study in the summer of 2021, using the interview technique. I was looking for answers to the question how and to what extent the COVID-19 epidemic has affected the lives of members of older people’s organisations, and how and in what ways their habits have changed, such as the use of digital devices and consumption in general. The results show that during the pandemic, in 2020, telephone contact was the main mode of communication between members of organisations, while in the following year, 2021, there were almost equal numbers of people who preferred online contact and those who preferred traditional telephone contact. Older people have presumably become more open to the online world, which is why internet use and online contact have become more common. During the period under review, older people’s willingness to use digital tools increased and this also broadened their opportunities, such as by developing their skills, which was often a necessity. This is also true for online purchases. Online consumption has also increased among older age groups, as well as among all age groups of domestic consumers. For older people in particular, this is influenced by their opportunities for digitalisation. The main advantage of digitalisation for older people is that they can keep in touch with each other and with their family members living further away much more easily, but the disadvantage is the financial cost, as not all older people can afford to have the right technical conditions, internet access and skills.

Research Framework: The growing contribution of inheritance to social inequality in many countries is stimulating research into how this transmission takes place within families. However, very few studies have been conducted on the subject in the Canadian context. Objectives: This research examines the extent to which Canadian families benefit from inheritance according to their social position. It also aims to study the temporal trends specific to the phenomenon, as well as the factors explaining the changes observed. Methodology: Using 2005, 2012, 2016, and 2019 data from the Survey of Financial Security, regressions were conducted to study the odds of receiving an inheritance, and its value according to household characteristics and survey year. Results: Families with higher socioeconomic status are more likely to receive an inheritance, generally of greater value. A rise in inheritance has also been observed in Canada. Changes in the age structure partly explain this, but the more significant increase observed in Quebec and among households of lower socioeconomic status indicates the influence of other factors. Conclusions: Inheritance contributes to the reproduction of economic inequalities due to its unequal distribution, and is a growing factor in Canada. The aging population explains some of the trend, but the influence of increasing rates of home ownership and house prices, as well as a change in wealth accumulation behaviours for children, may also be at play. Contribution: This article contributes to the understanding of inheritance, which has scarcely been studied in Canada. The unequal distribution of inheritance raises equality issues in opportunity, and the role of the state in mitigating its effects.

Like Western countries, in Gabon, there is an accommodation center for the elderly. However, in the African societies of yesteryear, the elderly were sacred, cared for and respected. How did we get to this point? This article offers a global reading of normal and pathological aging by showing how in the clinic of the elderly, the social, cultural, somatic and psychological dimensions are articulated and interdependent, as are the singular, family and institutional dimensions. It also lifts a taboo, namely the abandonment of elderly people by families. The study used a clinical method through case study to analyze and interpret the experiences of elderly people in residence at the gerontology center in Gabon. We note that these elderly people have a very difficult time with family abandonment and accommodation in the geriatric gerontology center. This experience of suffering manifests itself in the appearance of a sliding syndrome, a sign of pathological aging. Faced with this alarming observation which poses a vital prognosis for the elderly, we note a mobilization of staff, particularly psychologists, in plural care in order to help residents. This article thus addresses the representations of aging in this new African society: social representations but also self-representations among the elderly through lived experience. It will then make it possible to identify the issues specific to aging in institutions but will also help to better understand the elderly and care for them. Finally, it shows how aging in institutions constitutes a narcissistic castration for the elderly and generates an experience of suffering, a sliding syndrome.

A study of the effect of high altitude (Tuya-Ashu Pass, 3200 m above sea level and Bishkek, 720 m above sea level) on rat metabolism demonstrated significant changes in the lipid profile and oxidative stress levels after three days of exposure to low oxygen availability. There was a significant increase in total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, indicating disturbances in lipid metabolism and may be indicative of hyperlipidemia. Low density lipoproteins (LDL) levels increased significantly, while high density lipoproteins (HDL) levels decreased significantly, which is likely associated with worsening cardiovascular health and an increased risk of atherosclerosis. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels increased, indicating increased oxidative stress as a result of adaptation to high altitude conditions. Increased activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase enzymes confirms that the rats’ bodies are trying to adapt to increased oxidative stress by activating free radical defense mechanisms. Oral administration of ω-3 fatty acids at a dose of 300 mg/kg of animal body weight once a day for 30 days leads to a decrease in the levels of atherogenic low-density lipoproteins, malondialdehyde, increase the level of anti-atherogenic high-density lipoproteins and activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase.

This contribution aims at answering the question of the how and the why of invasive, micro-invasive and non-invasive analysis of anthropobiological remains, through the study of a collection comprising 51 skeletons of known age and sex (27 males and 24 females born between 1837 and 1916) stored in the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. We have attempted to identify possible age-related trends in femoral bone mineral content in the context of modern clinical references and archaeological skeletal series. Finally, we placed the data in a broad comparative context by comparing human bone mineral content values with those obtained from chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Results indicate a degradation of bone mineral density during aging that is comparable to that of current Western reference populations. Females’ bone health appears to be above the current average up until the age of 50 years. Bone mineral density values for humans are significantly lower than for chimpanzees, both in males and females. These results illustrate certain aspects of bone mineral density variability among different populations and within human populations over time, as well as the gracility of the human skeleton as compared to that of great apes.

Abstract Objective To investigate the factors associated with performance equal to or higher than the 95th percentile in the Mini Mental State Examination of elderly people aged 80 years and over. Method This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, and quantitative research conducted with a convenience sample composed of 101 cognitively healthy older adults residing in Brazil's Federal District, assessed by scales that measure mood, social support, functional performance, and health. Results Bivariate statistical analyses indicated that older individuals with better cognitive performance in the Mini Mental State Examination, when compared to participants with performance below the 95th percentile, showed better self-perceived health, greater satisfaction with the ability to perform daily tasks, and a more positive evaluation of general social support and in the domain of having someone to talk to when feeling lonely. Conclusion High global cognitive performance in old age is associated with perceived health, satisfaction with functional performance, and social support.

The article analyzes the phenomenon of human and social aging, in an attempt to answer several questions related to social evolution. What principles should govern the relationship between the individual and society, and how far do our obligations to others extend? To what extent should the state intervene in market regulation? How does social change happen and how can the law ensure that everyone has a voice? The distinction between traditional rural communities and modern industrialized society is analyzed through the lens of Ferdinand Tönnies theory (German sociologist and philosopher, 26.07.1855 - 09.04.1936), wich points out what the distinction between traditional rural communities and modern industrialized society. The former are community that is based on the bonds of family and social groups such as the church. Small-scale communities tend to have common goals and beliefs, and interactions within them are based on trust and cooperation. Tönnies’ theory, along with his work on methodology, paved the way for 20th-century sociology.

Motivated by the need to increase knowledge about the effect of age on speech production, and by the lack of speech data on European Portuguese (EP), this work focuses on the development of a speech database, with acoustic data of healthy adults using standardized recording procedures. The objective of this database is to support a comprehensive analysis of age and gender effects in EP speech at segmental and suprasegmental levels. In this vein, the present work provides the description of one acoustic speech database containing all EP vowels produced in similar context (reading speech), and also semi-spontaneous speech (image description) collected from a large sample of 144 adults from the central region of Portugal, between the ages 35 and 97. This paper summarizes the research design of the acoustic database and includes details about the study region, participants, participants’ tasks, corpus, data acquisition, and segmentation/annotation of the data. This database has been used in different studies, where various aspects of the aging speech were explored through different methods, such as static acoustic features and dynamic vowel formants. However, the collected data could be used on other acoustic studies of speech over the lifespan.

This paper reflects on the ways in which age shapes video game play, with a focus on the experience of older players. Confronted with a feeling of incongruity and the emergence of the "silver gamer" figure, as well as the social and material circumstances of old age, older video game players engage in bricolage to play on their own terms. The experience of older players brings to light what age does to video games: age categories each carry a distinct set of representations, norms and roles that structure video game play, its meanings and practices.

Undernutrition is one of the major problems of public health, frequent in the extreme ages of life where its evaluation is often difficult. It most often leads to tissue loss with deleterious functional consequences. Aging is a persistent decline in the age-specific fitness components of an organism due to internal physiological deterioration. As a result of physiological changes, the nutritional status of the elderly can deteriorate rapidly and affect all steps of eating, from the sensation perceived when food is put into the mouth to the metabolism of nutrients. This can lead to protein-energy under-nutrition in this population. Anthropometric, biophysical and biological measurements allowing the quantification of undernutrition, the evaluation of its severity. This narra-tive review focuses on the importance of recognizing, preventing and treating under-nutrition in the elderly as part of management strategies in order to limit the morbid consequences in this vulnerable population.

- Abstract
The territorial management of aging represents a real challenge for New Brunswick municipalities. This contribution illustrates the changes that have occurred in this area and, more specifically, to municipal infrastructures, equipment and services, between 2014 and 2021, in the Regional Municipality of Tracadie. The analysis is based on semi-structured interviews with local elected officials and stakeholders working with seniors. Although respondents noted an overall improvement in the territorial management of aging, gaps remain, particularly in the former local service districts, notably with regard to sidewalks and snow removal. The implementation of an urban plan that considers the particular realities of seniors would undoubtedly mitigate the effects of such shortcomings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The organization of the arterial wall into 3 layers occurred concomitantly with the emergence of a highly muscularized, pressurized arterial system that facilitates outward hydraulic conductance of different substances across the arterial wall related to 3 physiological functions: (1) the endothelium ensures a partial barrier function; (2) the media comprises smooth muscle cells capable of endocytosis and phagocytosis; (3) and the outer adventitia and perivascular adipocytic tissue are the final receptacles of convected substances. The media, composed of vascular smooth muscle cells embedded in an extracellular matrix, takes up numerous molecules via scavenger receptors and are capable of phagocytosis, efferocytosis and endocytosis. The adventitia is the site of immune response development, inward angiogenesis, macromolecular lymphatic drainage, and neuronal stimulation. Consequently, although the clearance functions of the arterial wall are physiologically essential, they also contribute to the development of numerous arterial wall pathologies such as ageing and atherosclerosis. The study focused on determining the preservative and restorative effects of seed priming with gibberellic acid (GA3) and potassium nitrate (KNO3) on sunflower seeds against deterioration. The seeds were immersed in different concentrations (0, 250, 500, and 1000 mg L−1) of GA3 and KNO3 solutions before and after being subjected to accelerated aging (AA). Unprimed seeds (NT) were used as control. The results showed that AA led to a reduction in germination percentage, germination index, and seedling growth parameters. However, seed primed with GA3 had a higher germination percentage after AA than NT. All seed primings shortened mean germination time and improved germination index. Seedling growth was stimulated by seed priming, and seed priming after AA produced more vigorous seedlings than primed seed before AA because they were severely affected by AA. In addition, hydration sufficiently induced the germination and seedling growth of aged seeds. A significant difference was found between GA3 and KNO3, and seeds were effectively protected from aging by GA3, while hydration promoted germination of aged seeds. Consequently, the recovery effect of seed priming was more pronounced than the conservative effect, and sunflower seeds should be primed with 500-1000 mg L−1 GA3 before storage or, if this is not possible, hydration improves the vitality and subsequent growth of aged sunflower seeds.

This article examines how South Korean television treats the body in old age, looking at the issue of aging and the portrayal of disease in Dazzling. Kim Hyeja, the country's most beloved actress, who is almost 80 years old, plays the main character who gets lost in time. Her presence gives authenticity and depth to the series, and at the same time renews the collective memory of the Korean audience, and attracts audiences of all ages. The ageing star is involved in the creation of new roles and new fictions. With this in mind, Dazzling, who questions the place of the elderly in today's society, opens up other possibilities for senior actors.

This paper focuses on the transition of mobility practices and more specifically how certain older individuals experience patterns of Déprises leading them to adopt a more homebound lifestyle. As individuals age and advance in their life cycle, their capacities for mobility are prone to change, along with their lifestyles. Sometimes these changes are voluntary and done in a proactive manner, sometimes they are the product of external events. In some instances, following a transition period, these changes can result in a loss of mobility capacities, a continuation or reconfiguration of activities, or sometimes even an extension of mobility capacities, and therefore autonomy. As shown in earlier research, this process takes place in ways that are as diverse as the life course of each individual. This diversity, however, is still underrepresented in research, where older adults are often studied as a block according to their age (65+, 75+). This paper aims to delve deeper into the events and process leading to transition in mobility capacities among diverse profiles of older adults living in urban and suburban environments. To do so, the paper first presents results from statistical analysis showing how mobility practices can differ in older adults of different age groups representing different moments of the life cycle. Focusing afterward on a specific profile (the Stay-at-home), the article uses interview data to illustrate how diverse events, decisions and adaptation strategies led diverse individuals to become more homebound over the course of ageing. The article exposes a diversity of situations among Stay-at-home individuals, with transitions that are chosen or suffered. We conclude on strategies this plurality of Stay-at-home use to maintain their mobility and how we can support them to help them keep their autonomy.

- Abstract
In 2007, the World Health Organization published a global guide on innovations to the built and social environments that would ensure active aging for seniors. This guide suggests that municipalities adopt an "age-friendly city" approach, i.e. by improving the infrastructure, equipment and services used by seniors, particularly in terms of leisure, health and transportation. This paper aims to assess the scope of the measures put in place by the various social actors of two communities that have implemented the VADA process in New Brunswick, Saint-Quentin and Grand Falls. On a theoretical level, our framework is based on the model of environmental gerontology, which acts on the territorial governance process. Advocating a qualitative approach, our analysis method consisted of conducting semi-directed interviews with stakeholders and partners involved in the VADA process and holding focus groups with seniors. Despite the aims expressed by the elected officials, our results show that the approach fell short in improving the quality of life of seniors due to difficulties related not only to a lack of shared leadership, to the new responsibilities that fell on local actors, to communication consultation and demobilization issues, but also to a lack of knowledge of the project, both on the part of social actors and seniors, and to the current pandemic. GENE regulatory networks , *NON-coding DNA , *TYPE I interferons , *CELL physiology , *ENDOGENOUS retroviruses , *PRELEUKEMIA , *DYSAUTONOMIA - Abstract
Retrotransposable elements (REs), comprising endogenous retroviruses (ERV), and long or short interspersed elements (LINE-1; SINE), account for nearly half of human genomes. REs are regulated by heterochromatin, a condensed state of DNA characterized by DNA methylation and repressive histone marks such as H3K9me2, H3K9me3 and H3K27me3. Described for a long-time as junk DNA, they are gaining more and more interest, especially in aging and cancer where the chromatin is disorganized. REs can spread in the genome through a copy/paste mechanism, constituting a great source of genomic instability. They are also major contributors of gene regulatory networks, providing alternative promoters, splicing or polyadenylation signals, and also by serving as cis-regulatory elements in a cell- and tissue-specific manner. It is related to the progressive loss of heterochromatin. Defects in RE repression are also observed in cancer. Cancer cells become dependent on REs because of their ability to induce genomic instability and deregulate the transcriptome. Epigenetic reactivation of cryptic regulatory sequences within existing REs leads to widespread expression of oncogenes. However, REs are double-edged swords for cancer. Indeed, through their ability to mimic a viral state, leading to type I interferon (IFN-I) activation, REs can trigger apoptotic and antiproliferative signaling. Cancer therapies such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy and DNA hypomethylating agents (HMAs) use this vulnerability to kill cancer cells. Because RE expression can be their Achilles heel, tumor cells develop mechanisms to prevent RE release from epigenetic repression. AML leukemic stem cells have low RE expression and inactivate immune pathways, which may be involved in their immune evasion. Epigenetic players such as MPP8 and SETDB1 have been identified as playing a major role in RE repression and their dysfunction is associated with leukemogenesis. The failure of HMA treatments to eliminate mutated clones observed in myelodysplastic syndromes could be due to the lack of RE induction. Here we discuss the different mechanisms that could prevent RE expression in leukemic stem cells, the importance of these elements in cell function, oncogenesis and immunity, highlighting the influence of epigenetic mechanisms in the regulation of ER expression and how they can be exploited in a therapeutic context. - Abstract
The impacts of capacity-building in seniors on territorial development and aging in place. A perceptual analysis of the case of St-Quentin in New Brunswick (Canada). In Canada, New Brunswick is a province particularly affected by the aging of its population. This phenomenon raises many social, economic and territorial issues and challenges. Capacity-building for elders goes some way to mitigating the effects. However, what is more specifically its contribution to aging in place and territorial development? The objective of this article is to assess the perception of local dynamism with regard to the management of an aging population from different components related to the capacity-building of seniors. The case of the small town of St-Quentin, New Brunswick, holds our attention. Our demonstration is based on seven elements related to capacity-building, namely : participation, empowerment, relational life and social capital, sense of identity, resilience and networking. This exploratory case study examined the actors from the angle of social representations using four methods: semi-structured interviews, holding a focus group, conducting individual interviews with seniors and organizing a dissemination activity. The results show that capacity-building has beneficial effects on community vitality and improving the quality of life of the elderly. However, the model has its limits due to conditions inherent to the environment, but also to exogenous factors over which seniors have little control, hence the need for the Government of New Brunswick to put in place a territorial aging strategy. - Abstract
This article comes from an academic research, conducted with old persons living in French nursing homes and doing esports workshops, led by young volunteers. With the case of a 93-year-old resident, recently introduced to technological tools, we show how the stakes of videogames competition were at first met with her fear not to be good enough. However, her involvement in the competition mustered, through afterwardness, some elements from her childhood and adolescent psychic life. More precisely, by questioning her place in esports competition, this resident mobilized both the depressiveness necessary to aging, related to the confrontation to the limits inherent to the aging process, and tried to resolve a childhood trauma reactived after 80 years. This analysis also enabled to understand how these esports workshops, beyond the opportunity for entertainment and activity in order to take the mind off a monotonous life, could become devices supporting a potential therapeutic project.

Research and policy concerning the Syrian Canadian diaspora has not prioritized elders. This article adds to scholarship about the well-being of newcomers admitted via the Syrian Refugee Resettlement Initiative through a focus on grandmothers resettled within their multigenerational families. Using interviews and qualitative field research, we show how the authority and status these elder women once held in Syria may be undermined by their comparatively subordinate integration in Canada. Although new, post-migration configurations of power, care work, and community may present some opportunities, the burdens and dependencies of subordinate integration mostly constrain these elders from reclaiming their authority and status.

Aging is a complex process characterized by physical, psychological, and social changes. The interactions between these different aspects are naturally explained by embodied and situated approaches to cognition that offer a global, integrated, and unified understanding of aging. They propose a dynamic cognition emerging from the interaction of sensory-motor perceptions (embodied aspect) and the context of the present situation (situated aspect). However, very few studies have focused on this situated aspect of cognition in the study of cognitive aging. Yet, aging is also a social process, associated with many representations, often negative, that have effects on health and cognition. Stereotype embodiment theory proposes that representations of aging are internalized by everyone over time, gradually modifying intrapersonal behaviors. This article proposes that the cognitive changes observed in aging are partly the result of physical changes, related to repeated behavioral changes, caused by the effect of representations of aging. However, unlike other forms of stigmatization, the factors of belonging to the social group of the elderly are neither clear nor static. Only the transition to retirement seems to constitute a key stage in social aging. Therefore, the transition to retirement represents a unique situation to study the impact of a major social and physical context change on cognitive functioning. It would act as a catalyst for the effect of representations of aging by marking the social transitions toward aging and retirement. Different perspectives of applied research are also discussed, around prevention interventions and preparation for retirement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reliability of our memories is of crucial importance, both in extraordinary situations (e.g. court testimony) and in everyday life (e.g., when a person must take medication on a regular basis). To address these issues, numerous studies documented the conditions under which false memories emerge. Research clearly demonstrated that memory distortions are a normal and frequent phenomenon in the general population, but greatly accentuated in aging. Here, we review studies that documented age-related impact on memory distortions in the DRM and misinformation paradigms. Next, we examine the factors that underlie false memory susceptibility, with a focus on socio-emotional factors, and in particular aging stereotypes. We present recent results that highlighted the way negative age-related stereotypes might threaten older adults' and influence false memory susceptibility. Importantly, we also demonstrate that older adult's memory distortions can easily be reduced when taking into account tasks' characteristics and participants' motivation. Finally, we discuss the implications of age-related stereotypes when older adults' memory is evaluated, both from a theoretical and an applied perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: Currently, there are more and more dependent old people with cognitive disorders in nursing homes, who have difficulties, even disabilities, in daily life activities such as washing, dressing, eating or orienting themselves. This represents a significant workload for caregivers. Non-drug approaches have a very wide field of action, impacting the resident as well as his environment. For example, video game such as WiiTM have many advantages (low cost, easy to use, various games) and positive cognitive, motor, social and psychological effects. Objectives: The objective of this qualitative study was through the establishment of a WiiTM animation in a nursing home. First, caregivers observed old people with advanced cognitive disorders in order to see changes over their participation. In a second step, these same caregivers were invited to describe their feelings about the participants reception of the WiiTM animation, after three months of using the console. Results: Five residents were observed and presented a gradual improvement in the understanding of the instructions (console usage and game rules), with more motivation and participation. Six caregivers observed these workshops for three months and highlighted positive reactions and final adherence to its implementation, a motivational impact and general positive effects (cognitive and motor stimulation, psychoaffective effects and favored social interactions). From surgical techniques to pharmaceutical treatments, included biological or clinical sciences: what are the specificities and contemporary realities of biomedicine in Southeast Asia? The diversity of its forms invites us to think about the situated character of knowledge and practices that medicalize and transform bodies. This issue examines the dimensions of care when it is produced by actors who mobilize and appropriate the conceptual and empirical tools of Western scientific medicine. It is dealing with providing care for the elderly in North Sulawesi, caregivers of children living with HIV/AIDS in Laos, the healing of a brain tumor among the Dayak Benuaq in East Kalimantan, Cambodian oncologists practices, as well as obstetric violence in Indonesia and Cambodia. All the contributions allow us to analyze how treatment and care are provided in hospitals, private clinics, and health centers to question, more broadly, what it means to be a doctor, a patient, a caregiver or a woman in this region of the world. Far from being exhaustive, these approaches contribute to understanding how biomedicine interferes in the daily life of patients and families by analyzing its current forms, what imaginary and values it carries today in Southeast Asia?

Older persons in North Sulawesi (Indonesia) shared a long experience with biomedical health interventions during Soeharto’s New Order administration. These vertically and top-down structured development activities in health no longer fit current demographic, epidemiological, and social transformations in Indonesia. The rapidly aging communities, the sharp increase in non-communicable diseases, and aging impairments along with rapidly changing household assemblages call for a biomedical public health that ideally covers cure and care in equal shares. This understanding and vision of “good care” leads to a dynamic appropriation of biomedical services initiated by older persons. Here the monthly local health post sessions for elderly people occupy center stage of this appropriative process: a highly formalized and ritualized medical check-up based on the administration of drug which covers basic curative needs. In addition, the local cadres for aged persons play a significant role as intermediary and broker between an elderly patient, his/her caregiver(s), and the health professionals. Yet, except for the cadres’ home visits, the existing biomedical health system is not very concerned with eldercare (or social care) at household level—for ill older persons fully dependent on kin care truly a “missing link.” Biomedicine in turn increasingly attempts to appropriate elder health as its new market commodity. Thereby, the four fields of pharmaceuticalization, national health insurance scheme, biomedicalization as control and exercise of power in care, and commercialization of elder health support biomedicine in its pursuit of the hegemonic appropriation of older persons’ health and illness. However, dislocations and disjunctures due to the Covid-19 pandemic clearly reveal the structural vulnerability of this biomedical health system: Its sudden unreliability and unsustainability leads not only to a loss of trust in it, but also to a higher degree of vulnerability on the side of older persons in need of cure and care.

Charlotte O’Conor Eccles’s The Rejuvenation of Miss Semaphore (1897) is a comedic New Woman narrative in which a lonely, middle-aged, single woman gets rejuvenated after drinking an elixir. Miss Semaphore’s rejuvenation goes wrong, for she accidentally turns into an infant—not a beautiful woman in her twenties—and goes through babyfarming, which was a grave social problem in the Victorian era. At first glimpse, the text seems to make a farcical mockery of the old maid, but it also allows the aging female character to transgress Victorian gender and age norms. My goal is therefore to discuss how Eccles uses humour in letting her protagonist accidentally live backward and develop into a social activist, who testifies in court as a victim and witness of child abuse in the workhouse. Initially, the middle-class protagonist and her sister appear as old-fashioned Old Women at the beginning, but once the former unexpectedly turns into an infant, she indeed gets pushed out of a social safety net, as babyfarmers illegally adopt and abuse her. Eccles creates an ironic situation where the Old Women rejuvenate metaphorically into radical New Woman activists, who raise their own voice to fight against the given system of the world, in which unmarried women and their unwanted children are constantly marginalized. I claim that the comic rejuvenation enables the Old Woman characters to deviate from the normative women’s views and be reborn as New Women. The female rejuvenation plot bridges the gap between the New Woman and the Old Woman in a way that allows the formulation of New Woman ideals. The first part of my article will discuss Eccles’s and other New Woman writers’ critical essays on the female life course. The second part will scrutinize how Eccles’s comedic novel itself responds to the late Victorian female aging question. I ultimately argue that Eccles’s humorous New Woman narrative serves as a critique of social injustice that women and children were faced with in the late nineteenth century.
