Abstract Sci-fi tales of computing technologies have been carriers of an unabashed anxiety vis-à-vis the present and the future of politics. In International Relations, these tales split in two: either technology divides developed from developing, while also forging paths to development; or it helps contain unruly bodies–human’s, nature’s, otherwise. Drawing on the case of activist app Fogo Cruzado, this article proposes to shift the narrative towards the different political pathways that can be fabricated through an engagement with existing digital infrastructures. In re-enacting the trajectory of a bullet from a gun chamber to a smartphone notification, I show how the making of situated digital artifacts can illuminate how we think about Global South politics and disrupt two assumptions structured through tales of control and domination: one, that digital infrastructures are monolithic, seamless, and consistent; and two, that tales of technological innovation need to happen in the North.

Feedback is a complex issue that can be discussed from many perspectives. It can be given by teachers to students, by students to teachers, by students to students, by teachers to teachers. Moreover, nowadays thanks to technology our students can be offered automatic feedback that will be given to them immediately upon completing a task. Even though there are several texts dealing with feedback that students receive from teachers, it seems that not much research has been done on other types of feedback. This article aims to start a discussion on the different types of feedback as well as to show ways in which technology can be useful in terms of giving and eliciting feedback.

With students spending up to 20% of their in-class time texting, emailing, and checking social media, it is no wonder the problem about smartphones in the classroom arises. This article presents results of a piece of research focused on the analysis and reflection of the smartphone applications used with higher education students in order to provide, as well as to improve, their results in departmental exams while they are studying English at a professional level. The study took place over one semester of a curricular English course where smartphone applications were carefully selected and integrated into the current didactic units of the standardized institutional English program, with the purpose of finding, in the school of tourism and gastronomy, not only a solution, but a different approach to turning the problem into part of an updated methodology for the foreign language classroom. The results of this research are expected to have a significant impact on the improvement of the methodology used by teachers at all the schools on our institutional English program with the effect that, once the teachers begin to implement the systematic use of smart phone applications in the delivery of their lessons, learners will hopefully perceive the English course as more relevant and meaningful and be motivated to achieve the expected results.

The irruption of COVID-19 has led to a multitude of deep-seated transformations, which go beyond the purely sanitary sphere, leading to major socio-economic changes, among which the evolution of traditional forms of administrative intervention or the empowerment and/or acceleration of the advances derived from the digital (re)volution stand out for their extraordinary importance. Thereby, in recent months we have witnessed the implementation of numerous initiatives aimed to alleviate the harmful effects of the pandemic by developing technological tools based on processing categories of specially protected personal data, such as health data, which raises important questions from the perspective of privacy and digital rights. The aim of this study is to carry out a detailed analysis of some essential elements, necessary to achieve the difficult balance between the promotion of technological instruments that contribute to control the effects of COVID-19 increasing the resources available to health authorities, and safeguarding the fundamental right of personal data protection.

Hoy en día las Tecnologías de la Información y la comunicación (TIC) son un recurso didáctico y una vía de comunicación de la cual los docentes de lenguas podemos extraer una utilidad sin precedentes. Todo esto permite aplicar creatividad tanto del docente como del alumno en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje; ya que las TIC nos proporcionan material práctico y didáctico cuyo resultado es una enseñanza más personalizada, aportando retroalimentación del progreso de cada alumno, a la vez que permite alcanzar a más alumnos en menos tiempo, así como también introducir una variedad de elementos de motivación en el aprendizaje. Otro de los elementos interesantes sobre la tecnología es que además de ser factible de utilizar en el aula presencial, ofrece la posibilidad de que los alumnos extiendan su aprendizaje más allá del aula, esto es, a su espacio personal, gracias a la gran cantidad y al acceso universal a recursos de aprendizaje a través de sitios de internet que son además de útiles, gratuitos. Durante el proceso de innovación de nuestro entorno de clase, pudimos encontrar varias aplicaciones que se pueden utilizar para promover un impacto positivo en los alumnos y los resultados no solo fueron significativos sino también fascinantes.

El objetivo de este artículo es establecer un análisis comparativo de cuatro aplicaciones móviles (apps) diseñadas para la adquisición del francés como lengua extranjera (FLE). Dos de ellas se dirigen a un público generalista en el que el francés es una de las lenguas ofrecidas: Bussu y Duolingo. Los otros dos han siso creadas exclusivamente para aprender FLE: Le Bon Mot et Français Premier Pas. La revisión bibliográfica nos permite afirmar que la autonomía y la sencillez son ventajas del uso de las apps, mientras que el aspecto repetitivo sigue siendo una limitación. Nos centraremos en el estudio de los ejercicios propuestos en las aplicaciones seleccionadas con respecto a las habilidades orales de comprensión y expresión. Nuestro estudio llega a la conclusión de que, aunque las habilidades de comprensión están bastante bien desarrolladas, las de expresión podrían mejorarse para que estas aplicaciones sean herramientas eficaces.

Mobile apps (applications) are currently taking over as our most frequently used tools in many situations. As teachers we need to consider whether they ought to be employed in the language classroom, allowed in tests, or referred to for homework. This paper focuses on an experiment in a German vocational school to answer these questions by gauging, firstly, students’ performance in a vocabulary test, with and without access to an app named Quizlet and, secondly, their attitudes to the use of apps for English vocabulary learning via two questionnaires. Responses to the latter showed that every single pupil in the survey uses a mobile phone daily and that a clear majority in every class except one think it would make sense to use their mobile phones to help them with school subjects, primarily because these may be enjoyably employed anywhere, anytime. They feel that apps on their mobile phones motivate better than traditional paper-based classroom materials, especially when there is a game-like element. As for the test, the general improvement in results obtained with the app suggests that it could at the very least be used more extensively in schools. In the test, curiously, the youngest pupils failed to improve their results with Quizlet, but almost every other student category did benefit considerably and there is reason to believe that it would be worth exploiting such apps for vocabulary learning, testing and perhaps for other school subjects in the future.

Este artigo brevemente apresenta a necessidade potencial de desenvolver uma extensão para os estudos de produção (intitulada aqui como estudos de software televisuais). Tal extensão engloba processos relacionados à gestão, integração e sincronização de desenvolvimento de software, que seriam executados por produtores de TV durante a produção dos programas televisivos para posterior fornecimento de companion apps pelas emissoras para sincronização de anúncios publicitários entre telas. É argumentado que, apesar de a alternativa complexificar a produção de TV, ela pode também minimizar o risco de que a distração da audiência durante suas materializações de experiências de múltiplas telas promova uma redução no patrocínio dos programas de TV.

The article analyzes the editions, translations and adaptations of Don Quixote, available for iPad. It pursues to catalogue the resources from Cervantes’ work, as well as study its technical characteristics, its scientific value and its innovations. The degree of hypertextuality, hypermediacy and interactivity will be evaluated in these resources. Another keypoint for this assessment is its relevance regarding the exploration of new ways of production and reception of objects integrating our literacy heritage, specially designed for new technological support.

Résumé Ces dernières années, le nombre d’utilisateurs de smartphones a explosé à travers le monde et les téléchargements d’applications pour smartphones ont considérablement augmenté, l’utilisation des smartphones atteignant 73 % chez les adolescents américains depuis 2013. Le but principal de cet article est de présenter une revue de littérature centrée sur l’utilisation des applications de smartphone pour améliorer la santé sexuelle. L’utilisation d’une application pour smartphone pour fournir des informations sur la santé sexuelle, en particulier à des populations plus jeunes, pourrait aider à accroître la sensibilisation aux comportements sexuels à risque avant les débuts sexuels. Fournir du matériel d’éducation de santé sexuelle exact, complet et à jour par le biais des smartphones et des sites Web pourrait améliorer les résultats en matière de santé sexuelle. Cependant, il y a peu d’applications de smartphones liées à la santé sexuelle et reproductive disponibles pour les utilisateurs. Summary In recent years, the numbers of smartphone users has surged across the world and downloads of smartphone apps have grown significantly, with smartphone usage increased to 73% among American adolescents since 2013. The main goal of this article is to present a review of the literature focusing the use of smartphone applications to improve sexual health. Using a smartphone application to provide sexual health information, especially to younger populations, might aid in increasing awareness of sexual risk behaviors before sexual debut. Providing accurate, comprehensive, and up-to-date sexual health education materials through smartphones vs. Web sites might improve their sexual health outcomes. However, there are few smartphone applications related to sexual and reproductive health that are available to users. Research has shown that 80% of Internet users in the United States search online for health information, and that young people are gathering health information using mobile devices with increasing frequency, including sexual health information. However, while new technologies, including smartphone apps, are used to facilitate health information seeking, health-related apps are infrequently downloaded and rarely used. This suggests that, to promote sexual health through smartphone apps, researchers could partner with app developers in order to integrate sexual health promotion interventions in popular sex-related or dating apps. However, it is evident that these apps provide novel opportunities to engage at-risk populations in sexual health interventions. Several studies have suggested that young adults consider sexual health promotion via apps acceptable. Future research should focus on evaluating these efforts specifically in the reduction of negative sexual health consequences such as a decrease of STIs and unintended pregnancies as well as whether a sexual health app can link clients to health services. Our results could help clinicians by offering information about the potential use of smartphone apps to increase sexual health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes how mobile consultation of “screen-based writings” is likely to affect the practices of mobile Internet users and transform the shape and scope of how they move around. It focuses specifically on how mobile tourism applications are changing the way people visit. Mobile applications are perceived as a way to organize, structure, and display writings that condition and frame the visitor experience. The article analyses two types of interdependent translations: the sociotechnical inscription of the prescriptions selected and the selective reception of the information transmitted and how it is valued in practice.

This paper is based on a presentation I gave at the Access Conference in Toronto, Ontario on September 10th, 2015. Both the presentation and this paper are explorations in three parts. The first part is a short history lesson on the use of paper cards by scholars and librarians, which led to the introduction of the “Scholar’s Box.” The second part asks the question: Can we consider Zotero as the Scholar’s Box of the digital age when it cannot capture important metadata such as linked open data? It is recognized that this is not just a shortcoming of Zotero: research is surprisingly still very difficult to share between scholars, libraries, and writing tools. This is due to an inability to capture the “invisible text” when we copy and paste citations from one application to another. The third part establishes that the digital card is now the dominant design pattern of web and mobile, and notes that these systems are largely restricted to proprietary platforms, which restricts the movement of cards between systems. This paper then suggests how we might transform the historical Scholar’s Box, by using HTML5 index cards from Cardstack.io as a means to bring new forms of sharing on the web, and, in doing so, reconnect the scholar to the library. Cet article est basé sur un exposé que j’ai donné à Access Conference à Toronto le 10 septembre 2015. L’exposé et cet article sont des explorations en trois parties. La première partie est une leçon d’histoire courte sur l’usage des cartes en papier par les spécialistes et les bibliothécaires, qui a mené à l’introduction du “Scholar’s Box”. La seconde partie pose la question: Est-ce que nous pouvons considérer Zotero comme le “Scholar’s Box” de l’âge numérique, même s’il ne peut pas capturer des métadonnées importantes telles que les données liées ouvertes? On reconnaît que ce n’est pas seulement une lacune de Zotero: étonnement, la recherche est toujours très difficile à partager entre spécialistes, bibliothèques, et outils d’aide à la rédaction. Ceci est dû à l’incapacité de capturer le “texte invisible” quand on copie et colle des citations d’une application à une autre. La troisième partie établit que la carte numérique est maintenant le motif dominant sur le Web et sur le mobile, et constate que ces systèmes sont largement limités aux plateformes propriétaires, ce qui limite le mouvement des cartes entre les systèmes. Cet article suggère comment on pourrait transformer le “Scholar’s Box” historique en utilisant les cartes d’index HTML5 de Cardstack.io comme moyen d’apporter de nouveaux moyens de partager sur le Web, et ce faisant, reconnecter le spécialiste à la bibliothèque.

Background: The clinical photography in plastic and reconstructive surgery has known a numerical breakthrough. The storage of online data, massive means of analysis such as facial recognitions algorithms poses a serious issue when it comes to the protection of personal data. We will assess a platform's benefits in connection with the computerized medical record, which will allow keeping the photos filed and centralized in a smart and secure manner., Method: We interviewed 300 plastic surgeons about the role of smartphone in their clinical practice. Concomitantly, we developed an innovative platform called Surgeon © , a secure way to index, file and send photographs with a smartphone on our hospital's server. Each photographic sequence was qualified using a specific form. We then collected prospectively, between May 1st 2017 and March 30th 2018, the number of patients photographed, the number of sequences and photographs taken and the average number of sequences per patient., Results: Out of 86 French plastic surgeons surveyed, 81% say that they could not go on with their daily practice today without their smartphone. Photographs taken were stored in their smartphones (50%) or synced with virtual storage (25.6%). A majority (80.2%) would use a dedicated secured smartphone application. Our application allowed us to photograph 979 patients, or 2345 sequences and 8112 photographs, with an average of 2.28 sequences per patient., Conclusion: Thanks to its ergonomics and security, this platform can be set up in a hospital ward and beyond., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Masson SAS.
