The foundation activity of the Princes of the House of Sanguszko in the turn of t he 17 th a nd 18 th centurypresented in this paper does not depict the whole religious experience and people’s faith who passed away. Among many outstanding personages the greatest were Szymon Samuel Sanguszko and his heirs, especially Paweł Karol Sanguszko, who played an important role in founding churches and convents. Such an expansive foundation activity of the Sanguszkos in their ancestral possessions, especially the borderlands, had its powerbase. The sources of which were, among others, the financial status, the positions held and indeed it was characteristic of the fall of the baroque epoch, according to which one ought to take care of their eternal life by being helpful. This helpfulness boiled down to numerous foundations and philanthropic activity for the deprived. What is more, the founders secured for themselves, often after stormy lives, prayers for their souls in the convents and churches they donated, which also usually became the places of their burials. It is worth emphasizing that many of the Sanguszko family chose religious vocations as priests, monks or nuns. Undoubtedly, it was a manifestation of living faith and deep religious devotion of one of the most important families in the Republic of Poland and Latvia in the 17 th a nd 18 th ce nt u r y.

Attic orators extensively celebrate the deeds of mythical heroes, exemplary figures offered to the admiration of the Athenians, without dwelling on the cults and sacrifices devoted to them within the civic space. To encourage the Athenians to match their exploits, the speeches emphasize the honors rewarding the benefactors of the city. Some citizens indeed were distinguished by the city for their devotion to democracy and enjoyed after their death exceptional honors which are similar in many ways to a cult. We will study in particular the case of Harmodios and Aristogiton as well as the destiny reserved to citizens who died on the battle-field and received specific honors remembered by the Epitaphioi. By analyzing these honors and the vocabulary used to depict them, we will try to determine the new status of these individuals, between immortality and heroization.

The article focuses on the relationship between writers and literary patrons in the 17th century in France. Topics include the emancipation of writers through the reinforcement of their dependence from sociopolitical power, the desire for autonomy of authors at this period, and the distinction that anthropologists describe, between the commercial object, the object of donation, and the sacred object. The logic of donation specific to the 17th century, and applied between authors and patrons, is examined in the article.

The Stewart Museum at the Fort of ÎIe Sainte-Hélène will soon celebrate a half-century of existence (1955-2005) and will pay tribute to its illustrious founder. We thought the time was appropriate to highlight the David M. Stewart Library. The Library was of special interest to this great Canadian benefactor, who was personally involved in its development. This Library has never been the subject of any research and we wanted to fill a void by studying the collection of rare books that once belonged to the Chevalier de Johnstone, which is, in a way, the heart and sole of the Library. A systematic inventory of collections4 of rare books in Québec was recently undertaken by the Bibliothéque nationale du Québec (BNQ) and the Association québécoise pour l'étude de l'imprimé (AQÉI) and we hope that the inventory of this rich collection would highlight one of the many contributions made by David M. Stewart to the cultural fabric of his country. Following a brief presentation of the man and his philosophy, we discuss the origins and the development of this special collection, which is, in fact, the reconstitution ofa gentleman's library in 18th century New France. A statistical analysis and a survey of the titles allow us to appreciate the extent to which David M. Stewart achieved his goal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As an Hellenic city, Aphrodisias has built in the early Augustan age his theatre, used as ekklesiasterion for the public assemblies of the politeia. The epigraphic corpus found in the theatre compared with some architectural features of the monument help to understand his political and civic role, particularly as memorial of the history and identity of the city.
