Objective: Young adults (18- to 24-year-olds) constitute the age group with the highest proportion of cannabis users. In the context of legalization, it is important to promote lower-risk cannabis use. The Protective Behavioral Strategies for Marijuana Scale (PBSM-17) identifies strategies used by consumers. However, this scale is not available in French and is not adapted to the Canadian context. This article presents the process that led to the translation, cultural adaptation and evaluation of the preliminary psychometric properties of PBSM-17., Method: The methodological study was carried out in six steps. The first four steps led to the translation towards French and adaptation of the scale. A validation among 12 young people contributed to establish the criterion equivalency (step 5). The evaluation of psychometric properties (step 6) was carried out among 211 bilingual university students (61 % women; mean age 22 years old)., Results: The French version presents satisfactory preliminary psychometric properties: internal consistency is acceptable (α = 0.88); criterion equivalency was established between the French and the original English version (t (210) = 1.04, p = 0.30; 95% CI [-0.20, 0.63]). The scores obtained on both versions by the same participant were found to be strongly correlated (r = 0.95, p <0.001)., Conclusion: The results support the use of the French version of PBSM-17. The proposed protective strategies can be used as a measurement tool and represent behaviors that can be targeted in a lower-risk cannabis use context.

The nursing community seems to agree on the general meaning of "self-care" as a concept allowing the individual to take care of his health. Yet the terms self-care and other "self-concepts" are often used interchangeably. Since this concept is central to nursing, it appeared crucial to lead an effort to clarify and to deepen the understanding of its development within the field of nursing. The objective of this evolutionary concept analysis was to identify the state of precision or clarity of the concept in the available nursing literature. The identification of attributes, antecedents and consequences has highlighted the characteristics as it has been used by various authors and ultimately provides a basis for further research. After this analysis, it is possible to propose that the concept of self-care refers to an activity initiated, consciously and following learning, which is appropriate to the situation and focused on a goal. Furthermore, this concept is widely used in contexts of long-term illnesses and much less so in contexts of acute diseases. In conclusion, work remains to be done to better differentiate the concept of self-care from other self-concepts when used in situations where a third party is involved in the realization of self-care.

The objective of the clinical project was to plan and deploy a knowledge translation approach to prevent falls among elderly patients hospitalized in a unit of cardiovascular medicine. A combination of education strategies built around interactive workshops enabled the implementation of a screening tool and of an up-to-date preventive intervention guide. Twenty-four workshops were conducted in all three work shifts and an implementation follow-up was made. The participation rate was 93% of the unit's active staff The increased use of prevention tools and of an intervention guide to prevent falls suggests an increased level of awareness as a result of the project. The staff expressed their satisfaction on having been consulted and involved early in the implementation process. Moreover, the flexible schedule and focus on a bilateral sharing of knowledge through brief interactive workshops were appreciated.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a smoking cessation intervention provided after discharge from a specialized cardiac hospital., Design: A randomized pilot study (N = 40); after discharge, the experimental group (EG) received 6 phone calls from a nurse specialized in tobacco cessation counselling., Results: Patients in the EG showed improved scores on two aspects of illness representations (perceive their illness as chronic and reported less negative emotional representations). No significant difference in smoking cessation was observed at 6 months (p = 0.72)., Conclusion: The non-significant difference may be explained in part by the smoking characteristics within this sample exemplifying the more nicotine dependent "hard core" smokers who persist in their smoking habits despite the serious health consequences incurred by continued smoking. This population of smokers may require a more intensive, specialized intervention to achieve smoking cessation.

The primary goal of this study was to confirm the appropriateness of an experimental model that studied the emotions of a rational client toward living with cognitively impaired clients. The second goal was to identify factors linking the feelings of health caregivers toward the cohabitation or segregation of rational and cognitively impaired couples. The research took place in 19 Montreal senior citizen homes with 75 beds or more. The senior citizen homes, the rational clients and the health caregivers were selected using specific criteria and systematic sample selection. Individual interviews with 435 rational clients living in cohabitation units were undertaken. In addition, 349 health caregivers (nurses, practical nurses and attendants) responded to a questionnaire relating to the cohabitation of these couples. It was found that the rational clients adjusted well to the model. Four variables reflecting the emotions of 33 per cent of the rational partners include: The frequency of uncomfortable feelings related to living with the cognitively impaired; their knowledge level about cognitive impairment; their distress level relating to the confused/irrational behavior of the cognitively impaired; and their perception of the advantages of living with the cognitively impaired. The rational clients who had the least understanding of cognitive impairment identified that they were more upset by the confused client's behavior. They demonstrated uncomfortable feelings toward living with confused/irrational clients more frequently, and perceived less advantages relating to cohabitating with these clients. Consequently, the rational clients were less amenable to cohabitation. The percentage of cognitively impaired clients living on the same floor was not identified as a variable.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Many people suffering from dementia live at home, in spite of the demands that such a situation puts on those who care for them. The role of helper is usually assumed by a particular family member who is therefore more likely to feel the impact of the caregiving responsibility. Researchers are concerned with the relationship between the well-being of these helpers and their informal social support. This article presents a critical review of 21 studies of that relationship. The various dimensions of social support considered in the studies are analyzed, as are the methodological limits. A discussion of findings about the relationships between social support and well-being completes the analysis. It appears that researchers have a limited conception of social support and assess only a few of its many dimensions in a variety of ways. Very few authors explicitly specify underlying assumptions or a theory relevant to their conceptualization of social support. The weakness and the diversity of this conceptualization are reflected in the measurement tools which consist of a few ad hoc questions on social support in nearly 50% of the studies. Few studies consider the support availability, duration, conflict, and reciprocity. The buffering effect model of support is examined in one study. Inadequate sample size, unrepresentative samples, and lack of control in regard to confounding variables are among the methodological problems identified. When researchers use an evaluative approach to measure social support, the relationships between support and well-being are more often significant than when a descriptive approach is used. In future studies, researchers should be careful to better articulate the theoretical notions proposed in studies on caring for a family member with dementia at home with those coming from studies on social support in general. It is important for researchers to strengthen their study design and to carry out longitudinal studies; they must also try to understand how the influence of society works. From this perspective, one avenue for the future might involve studying the sequence of relationships between stress, support, coping strategies, and well-being. This is all the more important because at the present time certain studies on the caring of persons with dementia are based on a conceptual framework of stress. Such a framework considers support as a mediating factor.
