The authors studied 109 primary carcinomas of the external and middle ear, considering that those in the auricle represented 93% of all cases, the external auditory canal 3,5% and middle ear also 3,5%. The clinical aspects were analysed as well as discussed the therapeutical indications, performed basic surgical technics and in particular, the sub-total resection of the temporal bone. The results obtained were presented in 86 determinant cases with follow-up for 5 or more years : (formula index).

The autors compare the interpretation of radiotomographic films and the results of pathological examination of total laryngectomy specimens in 60 cases without contrast and in 15 cases with contrast. They study the value of the interpretation of X-ray films according to the site in terms of height, size, shape, the extent of the carcinoma and possible involvement of the pre-epiglottic space, the thyroid cartilage and the base of the tongue. With the aim of determining the true value of radiotomographic examination in carcinoma of the larynx, comparative tables were drawn up between the radiological interpretation and findings on macroscopic examination of total laryngectomy operative specimens. Radiological examination included standard lateral films, AP tomograms and, more recently, contrast laryngography.

Authors present three cases: one hemangiosarcoma, one reticulum-cell sarcoma and one rhabdomyosarcoma of the middle ear. Histopathology slides were reviewed, as well as the Western medical literature the authors could obtain on the subject. The rare frequency of these neoplasms in the middle ear was made evident. Aspects relative to diagnosis and treatment were discussed. Long term prognosis remains unfavourable.

The paper reviews the question of nerve grafts in iatrogenic facial palsies caused lesion of the tympanic or mastoid portion. The approaches used by different specialists are discussed and the controverse on the question is analyzed. The authors present their experience in six cases of successful operations.

The Authors studied 14 cases of ear injuries caused by gunshots. All the patients were submitted to surgery to eliminate infection and to remove the bullets. Facial nerve decompression or repair was made in 12 cases. Intratemporal facial paralysis due to gunshots presented 60% motor recovery in average after microsurgery.
