Competing Interests: Intérêts concurrents : Gary Bloch est membre fondateur, ex-membre du conseil et actuellement clinicien de Inner City Health Associates (ICHA), un groupe de médecins qui travaillent avec des personnes sansabri à Toronto et qui a financé l’élaboration de ces lignes directrices. Il n’a reçu aucune rémunération pour le travail effectué sur ces lignes directrices et n’a pas participé aux processus décisionnels du conseil de l’ICHA ayant trait à ce projet. Ritika Goel, Michaela Beder et Stephen Hwang sont rémunérés pour leurs services cliniques par l’ICHA, mais n’ont reçu de rémunération pour aucun des aspects des travaux soumis. Aucun autre intérêt concurrent n’a été déclaré.

Males represent approximately 6.8% of registered nurses in Canada and consequently constitute an untapped health workforce resource. The authors investigated environmental work factors in the acute-care setting and their influence on male RNs' job satisfaction and intention to stay in the profession. They conducted a cross-sectional study of male RNs employed in acute-care settings in the province of Ontario. Correlations and multiple regression analyses were used to examine career satisfaction and intentions. Nurses who were most satisfied with their career valued extrinsic rewards (pay, vacation, and benefits), control and responsibility, and opportunities for professional development; those who were least satisfied and voiced their intention to leave the profession tended to work part time, experience gender mistreatment, and be dissatisfied with extrinsic awards, scheduling, and organizational support. Palliative care is aimed at alleviating the suffering of patients with terminal illnesses. As more patients make the decision to die at home, community palliative care has become an alternative to hospitalization. The literature was examined in relation to the needs of terminally ill patients in the community and their families to determine their priority needs. Patients were found to have physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs, while families had needs in relation to the physical care of their loved ones, as well as information and psychosocial needs. The use of Watson's theory of human caring, and in particular her carative factors, was found to be an appropriate nursing model to direct palliative care nurses in meeting the needs of both patients and their families.
