Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease with global importance, and the animals are the source of transmission of this disease through shedding in their urine. Accordingly, it is essential to conduct epidemiological studies of leptospirosis in order to diagnose this disease in dogs and reduce the risk of transmission to humans. This study aimed to perform a seroepidemiological analysis of Leptospiral infection in stray dogs in Alborz, Iran, using the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT). In total, 110 blood samples were collected from stray dogs to detect the antibodies against leptospira interrogans serovarsby the MAT. The prevalence rate of positive MAT tests in stray dogs was estimated at 21.84%. The following protocol confirmed that the most common titers were 1:200 (50%) and 1:400 (25%). In addition, the most prevalent Leptospira serovars were L. Canicola (33.33%), and the lowest belonged to L. Pomona (4.1%). Moreover, no significant difference was observed between the age and gender of the dogs regarding their MAT titer (P>0.05). The results also showed a high prevalence of leptospirosis in stray dogs of Koohsar in Alborz province, Iran. Since Leptospirosis is a zoonosis disease, it should be studied continuously in humans and animals, especially dogs.

- Abstract
Introduction: Ocular toxocariasis is a rare disease, predominantly affecting children and young adolescents, and usually presenting as unilateral posterior uveitis. We report the case of a child with toxocariasis associated with serous retinal detachment., Observation: A 8-year-old child with no previous history of toxocariasis was referred for a 1-year decline in visual acuity, unimproved by optical correction, with vitreous condensation on examination, without central or peripheral granulomas, and serous retinal detachment on OCT. The diagnosis was made after extensive questioning, with evidence of contact with dogs and positive serology. Medical treatment combining corticosteroid therapy and antiparasitic therapy was initiated, and the clinical picture improved., Discussion: Ocular toxocariasis is a rare infection, unilateral in 90% of cases. Its clinical manifestation in children is pars planitis, posterior uveitis with a posterior pole chorioretinal focus associated with vitreoretinal traction and/or peripheral granuloma. In our case, the patient presented with vitreous condensation only, with OCT serous retinal detachment and no peripheral or central granulomas. Positive plasma serology or ocular samples confirmed the diagnosis., Conclusion: Ocular toxocariasis should not be ruled out in the absence of a typical clinical picture, and seropositivity enables confirmation of the diagnosis when clinical suspicion arises., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Masson SAS. Meet Digger and Daisy! They are brother and sister. These dogs like to explore their world and see new things. Sometimes they agree with each other. Sometimes they disagree. But no matter the situation, one thing always stays the same--their love for each other. In playful, simple stories written especially for the K-1 audience, author Judy Young explores the dynamics and nuances of the sibling relationship. In Digger and Daisy Go to the Doctor, Digger feels unwell and Daisy takes him to the doctor. But the checkup doesn't go as Daisy had planned.

- Abstract
Radiation therapy has many indications in veterinary oncology and allows a multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of canine and feline patients. Radiation therapy can be recommended as a sole therapy in case of radiosensitive tumors or can be associated to surgery and/or chemotherapy after marginal excision for example. It can also be recommended as a palliative treatment for patients with an inoperable or painful tumor or disseminated disease. Radiation therapy significantly improves the quality of life and survival time of treated animals and should be part of the therapeutic modalities in veterinary medicine. The University of Liège developed the first veterinary center of radiation therapy in Belgium and can therefore participate in improving therapeutic management of cancerous animal patients.

- Abstract
Among lacrimal system injuries, canalicular lacerations are at the top of the list. Men are more affected than women, but children are most likely to experience such trauma. The cause depends on the patient's age: in young children, there is a higher prevalence of animal bites (dogs and cats); in young adults, fights predominate, since motor vehicle accidents have become less common; in the elderly, falls are among the most frequent causes. Tetanus vaccination is required in all cases, but assessment for rabies exposure is necessary in the case of dog or cat bites. Diagnosis is very simple: it is based on examination or wound probing. Other head, facial, or ocular injuries must be excluded; for example, an injury to the globe must take precedence over a canalicular laceration. In the absence of an ocular injury, the canalicular wound should be managed surgically within 48hours under an operating microscope: identification of both severed ends of the injured canaliculus, suture of the severed canaliculus with monofilament suture, and appropriate lacrimal intubation if indicated. Other trauma to the lacrimal system, such as sharp or blunt trauma to the lacrimal sac or nasolacrimal duct, are much rarer., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.)

This article proposes a study of the various processes which the American cinema has employed to pose the question of our relation to the canine animal, and of the way in which these processes can be brought back to a fundamental opposition between, on the one hand, a utilitarian and anthropomorphic approach, inseparable from a certain politics of this cinema with regard to narrative and representation, and, on the other hand, a redefinition of this relation, as something occurring between the terms which it connects, namely the man and the dog, and calling into question the one’s primacy over the other.

Tamed and domesticated carnivores such as dogs, cheetahs and mongooses participated as search and chase aids to human hunting in different societies, during most of history, as attested by anthropological, literary or graphic sources. In order to impose human will on the animals, different tethering devices were developed, such as leashes, collars and harnesses. These devices significantly differ from others related to labour e.g. for hauling, riding or carry palanquins. During the Roman and Byzantine periods in the southern Levant, these animals and their restraining gear were depicted in hunting scenes on mosaic floors of churches, synagogues and private dwellings. These mosaics are discussed as evidence of everyday life. Therefore, this research analyzes the mechanism involved in translation of reality to images, the choice of hunting animals and their respective equipment as motifs represented on the mosaics, the differences between prestige and utilitarian hunts and the motivation behind the animal owner’s choices and preferences.

NARRATION ,CAVES ,DOGS ,YOUNG men ,GOTHIC fiction (Literary genre) ,PSYCHOLOGICAL stress - Abstract
Most of the critical work inspired by Stephen Crane focuses on Maggie: A Girl of the Streets (1893) and The Red Badge of Courage (1895). This article means to show that the narrative strategies which are at work in these masterpieces were already present, in embryo, in his earliest attempts at fiction: The Sullivan County sketches. All fourteen texts are studies in fear which offer a very original treatment of classic Gothic themes, by relying first on overstatement, then on debunking. Thus, "Four Men in a Cave" describes how the panic of four foolhardy young men in a stressful environment (a cave) reaches a climax in their confrontation with a "fiery-eyed" hermit who is, in fact, a poor devil crouching in the cave. In "The Octopush," the same "heroes" hover on a Poesque marsh before meeting a "sepulchral" figure who turns out to be a mentally deranged drunkard. In "A Ghoul's Accountant," a terrifying character compels the protagonist to follow him... to ask him about the price of potatoes. The nocturnal landscape of "The Black Dog" is soon associated with death, but the dog which seems to be the source of the rampant terror is merely... a dog. Finally, "Killing His Bear" makes fun of the "little man" whose apparent feat is only a show of self-aggrandizement. The apparent simplicity of the plots conceals an experimental approach to fiction which succeeds in creating in the reader a number of automatic responses that are simultaneously invalidated by perversely complex narrative strategies. - Abstract
Canine leptospirosis disease has been suspected clinically and serologically in 50 tested dogs, living mainly in communities. The microagglutination test was performed using a battery of 21 leptospirosis antigens and has shown positive results in three dogs vaccinated against leptospirosis; the last booster being dated back to more than 6 months. Two dogs died and autopsied and one survived after treatment. Positive reactions were recorded towards the leptospirosis serovars: L. interrogans Copenhageni, L. interrogans Bratislava and L. borgpetersenii Hardjobovis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description in North Africa of canine leptospirosis associated with these serovars in dogs. The authors discussed the pathogenic role, the epidemiological-clinical data of such serovars as well as the interest that may constitute the serovar determination (to determine the cause of the emergence of a new disease, the nature of the Leptospira reservoir and choice of vaccine). Research Framework : This paper deals with the integration of qimmiq (dog) in Inuit families from the central Canadian Arctic before they moved to settlements in the mid-20th century. Objectives : Its first objective is to describe how the qimmiit were integrated into those Inuit families as well as the strategies they adopted to keep them away. It then tries to make sense of the apparent contradiction between its importance and the harsh treatments it could receive at times. Methodology : The paper leans on fifteen years of research about Inuit dogs in primary and secondary sources, on dozens of Inuit testimonies published in various books and on three periods of fieldwork in Iqaluit, Nunavut in 2004, 2016, and 2017. Results : It proposes a description of the traditional Inuit family as well as a description of how Inuit and their qimmiit interacted before the creation of settlements (economic importance, place in society, how they were treated, etc.). It will also describe the strategies used by Inuit to keep qimmiit away and distinct from humans. This paper also identifies a series of Inuit behaviour Westerners found either negligent or inhumane toward their dogs and thus contradictory with its importance. Conclusions : The paper shows that qimmiit are neither dogs nor working animals but occupy their own peculiar space. Despite first impressions, there is no contradiction between how harshly dogs were treated and their importance for Inuit. Contributions : This paper answers a gap in current literature. Whereas most publications deal with the qimmiq’s physical characteristics or with the dog slaughter that took place in the mid-20th century, few deals with the integration of dogs in Inuit families and with the apparent contradiction between their importance and the way they were treated.

This research aimed to deepen the understanding of risks associated with dog bites, by assessing the current state of knowledge on this subject, then by investigating the occurrence of dog bites and the knowledge, attitudes and practices related to dogs and bites in two northern Indigenous communities in Quebec. First, a scoping review was conducted and showed that 0.61 to 59.6/10,000 inhabitants of northern Indigenous communities are bitten annually, and that 27 to 63% reported being bitten by a dog during their lifetime. Results support concerns about a higher risk in these communities than the rest of the Canadian population and highlight the need for more research on the contextual and environmental factors that influence this risk. Second, a study was carried out in the Naskapi and Innu communities in northern Quebec and showed that 21% of participants had suffered a dog bite during their lifetime. The study also revealed a lack of knowledge and awareness on the risk of contracting rabies and on preventive measures among inhabitants of these two communities. This study provides important knowledge for developing and prioritizing measures aimed at reducing the risks associated with dog bites and rabies transmission that are adapted to northern Indigenous communities.

Bentham’s query “[…] the question is not can they reason? Nor can they talk? But, Can they suffer?” (Bentham 8) drew attention away from language and the interior life of animals and focused it instead on the question of suffering. Just what suffering is left to the human to decide; a debate, which forms a large part of the discourse in the animal rights movement. But what happens if we were to return to the unanswered part of Bentham’s quote, the questions that Descartes so famously answered in the negative: “Can they reason?” “Can they talk?” These questions have been banned by scientific and philosophical discourse up until recently when the burgeoning interest in the ‘animal question’ re-opened the debate. Making the assumption that animals can indeed ‘talk’ I investigate the nature of dog/human/dog communication using as a conduit the art of South African artists, Elizabeth Gunter, Daniel Naudé and myself. I propose that dog to human and human to dog communication relies on nonverbal means such as bodily semiotics, prosody and other ineffable means that are not dependent on symbolic language.

Since Wild Dog first crawled from the Wet Wild Woods and laid his head on Woman’s lap, he has helped man, not only to hunt and protect, but also as guide. A guide with enhanced senses in the physical world who could find a way across unmarked landscapes, a clever empathic being who could lead man to certain places or to specific individuals. No wonder then that the best-known ancient dog deities accompany humans as guides, often on their way to the afterlife. Dog guides—not to be confused with guide dogs—have remained a constant feature of the representation of dogs in literature, reflecting as much of the nature of these dogs as of the nature and needs of the humans they attend. In this way, the human-animal relationship also reveals how the solipsistic tendencies of human self-definition limits our capacity for being in the world. In the two contemporary novels that form the basis of my enquiry, La Possibilité d’une île (2005) by Michel Houellebecq and Op ’n dag, ’n hond (2016) by John Miles, the agency of dog guides introduces an intriguing element of distancing, reminding us that the self has meaning only in relation to another and that human concerns are not absolute.

This article explores the positioning of the dog in representations of farm takeovers in Zimbabwe between 2000 and 2017. It highlights the localised embeddedness of animal lives within social processes at a specific juncture of postcolonial history. The article focuses particularly on this moment marked by abrupt reversals of power, geographical distributions of people and animals, and the erasure of many physical and psychological borderlines. It focuses particularly on two novels, Graham Lang’s Place of Birth (2006) and Ian Holding’s Unfeeling (2005). It examines ways in which dogs feature as both physical presences and as psychological refractors for human responses to the violent invasions depicted in these novels. Animals of all kinds have been largely neglected in studies of the land-appropriation process, and the article gestures towards the fruitful combination of animal studies and an historically-situated, multispecies, postcolonial ecocriticism.

Zimbabwean fiction writers have engaged with dogs as objects, subjects and even actors. This essay focuses on the pivotal forty-year period between 1975 and 2015, which saw the end of white rule, the rise of an independent African state and the collapse of that state. In analysing how selected writers have variously made use of dogs, we discuss the extent to which writers deal with human-dog relations. We buttress our point by examining key pieces of fiction in which dogs appear and we unpack the extent to which fictive representations of humans and dogs approximate lived relations in pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial settings. We show the enduring relevance of dogs as metaphors of power in the Zimbabwean political landscape. We contend that such canine allegories have a history and explore their usage by creative writers over the last forty years.

42. Canine embodiment in South African lyric poetry

This article discusses South African lyric poetry in English including translations since the 1960s. Rather than being private statements, South African lyrics, like all lyrics, are essentially dialogic—in relation to the philosophical, the political or the psychological. The poems examined here are in dialogue with dogs, their embodiment, their subjectivities, their contiguities with humans. This article considers how trans-species entanglements between human and canine, whether convivial or adversarial, manifest poetically in myriad ways in gendered and/or racialised contexts and analyses how the vulnerabilities of both humans and dogs are made to intersect. Ruth Miller portrays dogs as divine creations who are uncertain and “embarrassed”. Ingrid Jonker’s poems intertwine human and canine, foregrounding gendered vulnerabilities. Where dogs are figured metonymically, entanglements of human and dog break down binary categorisations, in Jonker’s poems as well as in those of other poets. Mongane Wally Serote’s creatural humans, for example, seem both animal and human. Oswald Mtshali figures dogs within apartheid structures as antagonists, protectors or savage scavengers. More recent poems, influenced perhaps by new thinking about the animal subject, imagine dogs in compassionate interspecies connections. Many of these recent elegiac poems, in particular those by Jenna Mervis and Harry Owen, are attentive to beloved dogs but without sentimentality or the imposition of an anthropocentric focus.

Dogs play an important role in colonial society, especially in Africa. While the project of colonisation involves settling in a new country and confronting wild animals, the dog is one animal on which the settler can rely as an ally, protector and companion. Settler dogs whose breeds stem from Britain are in a sense the animal counterpart of the human settler. When these animals desert their owners either by cross-breeding with indigenous dogs or reverting to the wild, it can seem like a betrayal of their settler owners and of the colonial project. Doris Lessing explores this dilemma in “The Story of Two Dogs” which is a semi-autobiographical story of her family and their dogs. She grew up in the 1930s on a farm in colonial Rhodesia. Lessing creates an ironical narrative voice that undermines colonial discourse and exposes racial and class prejudice among the settler community. Through the lens of the dogs she also draws attention to gender conflict and the subjugation of women in matters of dog training and hunting. In addition, conflict between adults and children is brought out which points to possibilities of a more open approach to the question of dog breeding, training and ownership. She also raises questions about the ultimate nature of the dog and its status as a domesticated animal.

This article explores the role of the figure of the dog in two contemporary South African short stories. It considers the metaphorical-cum-allegorical significance of the textual animal in these texts, asking how the writers use dogs as imaginative devices to draw attention to issues of gender, human emotions or psychoses, and the avowal or disavowal of (human and animal) agency. The aim is to engage with the writers’ evident wish both to comment on human-animal relationships and encounters in contemporary South African society, and to emphasise how these become effective, affective means of commenting on the continued inequities of post-apartheid society.

Traditional coagulation assays (e.g. PT, PTT, antithrombin, D-dimers, etc.) only assess a small portion of the process of coagulation. Global coagulation assays, including thromboelastography and thrombin generation, allow a more complete evaluation of hemostasis, including the balance of procoagulant versus anticoagulant blood components. However, these tests still have shortcomings in terms of their diagnostic utility. The study presented in this thesis investigates modifications to conventional thrombin generation techniques as an attempt to better identify hypercoagulable states in sick dogs. More specifically, we aimed to compare the in vitro effects of thrombomodulin and dalteparin on thrombin generation performed in healthy dogs and dogs presented with illnesses associated with hypercoagulable states. We hypothesized that addition of these agents would demonstrate endogenous anticoagulant deficiencies (i.e. protein C and antithrombin) in sick dogs. Ten healthy dogs and ten sick dogs were selected based on history, physical examination and complete blood work. Platelet-poor plasma was obtained from citrated whole blood, aliquoted and frozen at -80 ̊Celsius for less than 18 months. Thrombin generation was measured on thawed plasma using a Calibrated Automated Thrombogram assay. Measurements were performed without anticoagulant and with the addition of thrombomodulin and dalteparin at three dilutions (0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 U/ml). Endogenous thrombin potential (ETP), lag time (Lag time), time to peak (TTPeak) and peak thrombin generation (Peak) were recorded and analyzed using a mixed linear model (p < 0.05). No difference was observed between the groups before the addition of anticoagulants. The addition of thrombomodulin and dalteparin significantly decreased ETP and Peak thrombin generation in both groups. However, the effects of both anticoagulants were significantly less in the diseased group compared to the healthy group, except for Peak at the highest dalteparin concentrations (0.4 U/ ml and 0.6 U/ml). The addition of thrombomodulin and dalteparin to plasma in vitro highlights an endogenous anticoagulant deficiency in this population of sick dogs, by failing to reduce thrombin generation to the same extent as in healthy dogs. Therefore, performing thrombin generation with and without the addition of exogenous anticoagulants might be beneficial for the detection of hypercoagulable states in the dog.

Animal intentionality or agentivity are today frequently considered in the social sciences as derived from human intentionality. This idea has different versions. Humans would have intentionally shaped domestic animals. Animals would have an intentionality as long as they are linked with humans in "hybrid" networks. Or the intentionality usually attributed to animals would be the effect of an illusory anthropomorphic projection. This paper proposes to show the limitations of these assertions, using an approach articulating the social sciences and the life sciences. It suggests an alternative way of understanding the links between animal intentionality and human intentionality, and more broadly to reflect on what the animal teaches us on the intentionality of beings.

- Abstract
A case of complete situs inversus associated with an interventricular communication and ocular abnormalities in a 3-year-old mixed-breed female dog . A 3-year-old female dog was referred for exploration of a murmur concomitant with lethargy. An echocardiogram reveals an inversion of the position of the cardiac chambers and the presence of an interventricular communication. A computed tomography examination of the thorax and abdomen highlights the known cardiac abnormalities as well as the association of a complete situs inversus . The clinical examination also reveals ocular malformations (deviation of the eyeballs and asymmetry of the fundus). This article highlights the variety of abnormalities that can be associated with the complete inversion of the organs and demonstrates that there may be variants to the more classic picture usually encountered in humans (respiratory manifestations related to Kartagener syndrome).(Translated by D
