- Abstract
This document consists of all six issues of the bilingual (English and French) periodical "Monday Morning" published from its inception in 1985 through 1992. This publication was developed by the Canada/China Language Training Centre (C/CLTC), a language teaching enterprise that provides French or English language training to Chinese technicians and professionals who intend to receive future training in Canada. Goals of the C/CLTC include providing linguistic and social skills necessary for students to function in Canadian academic and work situations and to introduce learning strategies that students will implement after they leave the C/CLTC. Papers address issues such as the current status and future of teaching English in China, conceptual differences in the Chinese and English essay, adapting oral English materials for use in China, problems of Chinese students in learning pronunciation, vocabulary differences between Chinese and English, and curriculum and language development and training at the C/CLTC. - Abstract
A study analyzed the second-language essays of seven anglophone and one French-speaking Quebec university students enrolled in a literature course by using a cognitive-metacognitive framework developed for mathematical problem-solving and a think-aloud protocol. Results indicate the framework, with some adjustments, is a reliable tool for analyzing the essay-writing process. (Author/MSE)

5. THE ANTHOLOGY 'STATE OF WAR': SYNERGY, PROBLEMATICS, GENRE ORIGINALITY OF THE TEXTS

fiction-documentary prose ,meta-genre ,anthology ,genre ,text ,diaries ,essays ,autobiography ,collective memory ,history of everyday life ,Philology. Linguistics ,P1-1091 - Abstract
The anthology “State of War” is a fiction and documentary prose about the bloody war unleashed by Russia on Ukrainian lands, a prose in which the authors, through the prism of their own worldview, experience and emotions, offer the general readership the recorded tragedies of “timeless truth”, the facts of grave illegal crimes committed by the Russian occupiers. The article aims to examine the reception of martial law events in the anthology as non-fiction literature in contemporary Ukrainian prose. The object of the study is the texts of the anthology “State of War”, united by the subject of depicting military events in Ukraine in order to document the war in its various manifestations and tell the world about it in the “Ukrainian voice”. The study was conducted using elements of descriptive, structural and semantic, receptive and interpretive, and contextual methods of analysis. The anthology “State of War” is a genre transformation that combines “sophisticated fiction and the accuracy of documentary” (V. Sayenko), and is dominated by essays, narratives, and memoirs that have only recently been classified as fiction and documentary literature. The textual and social conclusions of “State of War” with an appeal to autobiographical memory made it possible to consider texts in the genre of “non-fictional prose” (T. Bovsunivska): they contain autobiography, the authors appeal to personal experience, indicate involvement in the events described, the narrative is in the first person and is based on a reliable fact, as in memoir genres. The core format of the anthology’s textual content is determined by the history of everyday life. The authors of the book (fifty of them), like the characters in the stories, are writers and public figures, journalists and scholars, volunteers and soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Combatant writers, i.e., active military personnel – Oleksandr Mykhed, Artem Chapai, Artem Chekh – create stories not based on other people’s impressions but on what they have seen and experienced, proving that the problems of a soldier are not only related to fighting and defending positions, but also to the aesthetics of survival, to the belief in victory over the aggressor for the further development of society. The texts of the anthology “State of War” contain genre “inclusions” (“Siren-Hyena” by L. Taran, “Under the Bridge” by S. Povaliaiev, “After the Occupation” by V. Puzik) that organically fit into the author’s narrative, confirm significant events, and increase the recipient’s responsibility in the reading process. The semantic core of the narrative of “State of War” is determined by the titles: they influence architectonic expressiveness, inform the reader about the objective reflection of events, facts and phenomena, transform into message titles, decode the content (“Being a Teacher Under Occupation” by L. Denysenko, “My First Bomb Shelter” by I. Pomerantsev, “After the Occupation” by V. Puzik, “Roots Up, or Fear of Migration” by T. Gundorova, “Presentation with Stress” by Y. Vynnychuk).

Jean Giono practiced pacifist ideology throughout his life and paid hard for it with two incarcerations in 1939 and 1944. His pacifism, however, takes on two distinctly different aspects in his narrative work. From the 1920s until the start of the Second World War, he celebrated, to a certain utopian extent, the peaceful life, uninvaded by technology, industrialization and profit that the farmers and artisans of Haute-Provence led at the beginning of the 20th century, in an almost timeless atmosphere. In the second part of the century, on the contrary, our author, strongly marked by the events of the Thirties and Forties, changed course and, without renouncing his pacifism, decided to face history. He then describes, especially in the « Cycle du Hussard », the amoral pragmatism of political circles, which ends up inducing the protagonist of the « Cycle » to opt for a kind of anarchism.

Countless studies have been written about the role of belles-lettres in the formation of personality. We propose to approach in the following lines the literary works of a Romanian writer who is appreciated, at tahe due value, by the yesterday and nowadays readers – George Meniuc. As the author of poetry, prose writings, literary essays, translations, George Meniuc contributed substantially by his literary art to the promotion of our national beliefs. In this respect it is worth mentioning the variety of artistic approaches used by the writer in his pieces of literature, he being appreciated by the scientists in domain as one of the most valued authors of the short narrative genre. Namely in shortstories literary genre G. Meniuc’s aesthetic preferences are expressed alongside with clarity and analytical strength, special sensitivity and seductive power of his meditations on life and destiny in the light of Romanian traditions. As confirmation to the stated things would be the literary essay written by G. Meniuc, with a suggestive title Miorița. In this respect we’ll refer to a short passage from this literary writing with a deep philosophical-meditative character: “The Danube was glittering as a perch with scales in the sun, and, seized in a mesh of enchantment, as an ivy my being was whirling, I wanted to sing, to sip the Danube as dew, and love for life, faith in people, thirst for work, to turn all these into foliage, into flowers, into grass, into the murmur of water… As if I had crossed a border of life’s misteries”.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
Diachronie. Description synchronique interne. Géographie de l'occitan. Ressources linguistiques.

- Abstract

- Abstract

Some of the challenges that the study of Unamuno’s work presents is its prolixity and the enormous variety of themes that it brings together. Besides, as for the essay part, in its publication the tendency has been to disseminate it in different journals, both national and international. This has led to some texts being forgotten for decades, outside of the Complete Works, and, finally, not taken into account in the different studies on Unamuno’s work. In this paper, we rescue a forgotten text, «Más sobre la europeización», and we study it along with its precedent, «Sobre la europeización», analyzing the common points with Del sentimiento trágico de la vida. With this textual study, we present the need to complete Unamuno’s Complete Works to guarantee a more precise approach to his work, not only from a genetic perspective, but also from a comparative one.

- Abstract
Hélène Cixous offers us an unclassifiable oeuvre, the main themes of which - the dead father, the lost country and the foreign mother -, all autobiographically inspired, assert themselves as such while offering the reader continuously new poetical and philosophical insights. The question of origin, either singular or multiple, gives rise to an écriture-pensée of a subjectivity which shows its roots, revisits places and relationships, but also breaks down myths of origin. This collection of essays proposes to study the markers of femininity, “algériance”, Jewishness and, as expressed in Cixous'latest works of fiction, the German filiation, as the main places of questioning origin. “Un legs empoisonné”, an unpublished text by Hélène Cixous, opens the collection.

The purpose of our study is to consider the essays of the famous cultural scientist, literary critic and public figure Yevhen Sverstyuk, dedicated to one of the last prisoners of the conscience of the totalitarian era Vasyl Stus, while revealing the various narrative vectors offered by the author of the essay. The relevance of the topic is due to the need to comprehend the reception of the work of Vasily Stus in the essays of the famous cultural scientist, literary critic and public figure Yevhen Sverstyuk. Research methods. The leading ones are cultural-historical, biographical, which is due to the general pur- pose and specificity of the material under consideration. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the study for the first time proposed new material that has not yet been the subject of scien- tific research. An attempt was made to conduct a comprehensive study of the essays of Yevhen Sverstyuk dedicated to Vasyl Stus against the backdrop of an era that destroyed the harmony of the individual.

The article aims to analyse causality as an argumentative technique in essays written by FLE (French as foreign language) learners. The essay is a task often used in foreign language classes to teach and test learners' ability to conduct argumentative discourse. We assume that the speaker who writes an essay, considered here as an argumentative statement, creates a speech act with the aim of persuading his/her interlocutors. To achieve this goal more easily, he is supposed to nuance the causal relations by modifying them either by quoting objective, scientific data or by means of a particular view of an authority or of the group to which the interlocutor belongs. The analysis of the compositions will make it possible to observe the speakers' attitude to the task of written production in the context of their language training. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Popularization essays are borderline works which combine scientific accuracy and high literary quality. The first task of an editor is therefore to select a translator who is able to preserve both aspects in the target text. The revision of the translation is then organized in a series of levels or phases: a comparison with the original text, which implies checking the technical terminology and the research actually carried out; a stylistic revision of the target text; a further reading focusing on the clarity and precision of contents; the check of intertextual references (table of contents, headings, footnotes, references within the text, index); a check of the compliance with the editorial guidelines; the correction of typos and the control of the layout, which in these volumes is often elaborate and sometimes includes pictures. These reading levels, although interacting, should be examined individually in a sequence of different phases, a methodology often hampered by the strict schedules required today by the publishing market. This article focuses on the techniques and problems related to each phase.

- Abstract

This paper analyses Virginia Woolf's non-fiction and fiction writings in the years surrounding three wars which had a direct impact on her life: the First World War which shaped her generation and made her question the sanity of the society that went on living as if millions had not perished in vain, the Spanish Civil War to which she lost her nephew Julian Bell and which would become one of the driving forces for her book-length anti-war essay Three Guineas (1938), all the way to the Second World War that would eventually play a significant role in her ending her life. How can an experience (such as war) be communicated to others in writing is a preoccupation throughout, and I trace Woolf’s private and public views as they change over time, comparing them to those of her contemporaries, such as her husband Leonard Woolf, Katherine Mansfield and Stephen Spender, as well as juxtaposing them with Ludwig Wittgenstein’s propositions from the last part of his Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus which arrives at kindred conclusions.

When the Second World War broke out, Virginia Woolf was absorbed in the final revision of Roger Fry, the final salute to her beloved friend whose biography she had been asked to write. If this writing experience is surely to be regarded as central to her experience of that limited portion of the conflict she endured, her readings too are to be considered as equally fundamental to the understanding of her participation in the conflict. To this effect this essay addresses Woolf’s first documented and systematic approach to Freud’s psychoanalytic theories, after the initial resistance she was careful to enact in the late 1920s.

Characters ,essays ,self ,metamorphosis ,popular print ,History (General) and history of Europe - Abstract
Seventeenth-century books of characters were collections of short satirical essays which metaphorically applied the image of the typeface, with its different characters or fonts, to the description of the various persons, trades and places of London. The repetitive format of character-books and the commonplace cavilling at recurring types seem hardly compatible with psychological exploration. Drawing on the formal proximities between the character and the essay, this article nonetheless traces the contribution of the genre to representations of the self in the early modern period. This article first gives an overview of prevailing characterizations of fickle and self-obsessed types who do not know themselves, and then presents a brief analysis of the moral and ideological stigmatization of change evidenced in contemporary literature. But not all change was conceived of as negative. By focusing on a character collection entitled A Strange Metamorphosis of Man, this essay argues that character-writing, while expressing the human figure in its social form, could also serve to project the self in what could be called its natural form.

PAPER arts ,POETRY (Literary form) ,ESSAYS - Abstract
The paper engages with the works of Thomas Kling (1957-2005) and elaborates on the specific incorporation of history in Klings poetics. Kling was both known for his wild style of lyrical performance as well as for his vast knowledge of history. Kling aptly puts the style of his lectures in the tradition of the "histrion", the actor in ancient Rome. The paper argues that the connection of history and the theatricality of the histrion becomes fundamental to his poetics. History is for Kling a material that combines linguistic, cultural and literary references that need a performative elaboration. The paper traces this constellation of performativity and history within Klings early poems and essays. It then turns towards a reading of his poems Manhattan Mundraum and Manhattan Mundraum Zwei. In these poems Kling intertwines the performative aspects of his poetics with an inquiry into the history that has shaped the island of Manhattan and the language of its "Mundraum". The work Actions, Mouvements et gestes written by Noé Soulier – philosopher, dancer and choreographer – takes the form of a critical essay in which he proposes models of apprehension of the danced movement. Through multiple “focal points of attentionâ€, he delimits gestural categories and establishes typologies of movements. Soulier’s critical thought takes shape through the elaboration of a writing whose modulations of diegetic flow designate the bodily dynamics that operate in the works examined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this article is to comment on some specific aspects of the literary essay in base of texts by two contemporary authors: the Swiss Jean Starobinski (1920-2019) and the Mexican Salvador Elizondo (1932-2006). What these two writers have in common is a certain conception of the essay modelled after the example of Montaigne: the essay is viewed as the place in which the concrete, corporeal, individual is, so to speak, shown and exposed. It is argued that the essayistic voice emerging from the writings of Starobinski and Elizondo is a reflective voice that expresses most concrete experiences in human life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
