Understanding a species’ current and future potential habitat is crucial to design its policy for management and cultivation practices that are more resilient in the face of climate change. This study assessed the present-day distribution and predicted the potential effect of climate change on the distribution of Anacardium occidentale’s habitat in Togo under two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) by 2055. Maximum Entropy algorithm, 2538 species occurrence records, and a combination of 23 climate- and soil-related variables were used. Soil, isothermality, temperature seasonality, and annual precipitation are the most significant environmental factors affecting the distribution of the species in Togo. Based on the current model, 54.45% of the Togolese landscape is favourable for cashew development, mainly in the plains of Guinean and Sudanese savannahs. Unfavourable areas (15.20%) are in the southern mountainous areas of Togo and coastal areas. An increase in favourable areas and a slight decrease in unfavourable and moderately favourable areas are predicted by 2055, considering the two scenarios.

The full importance of the "One health" concept now internationally promoted by the FAO, OIE, WHO, and UNEP is seen in the territories. The state of environments and habitats directly impacts human, animal and plant health, each of which depends on the functioning and dynamics of socio-agro-ecosystems. These territories are ideal for observation, analysis but also for action, thus giving citizens more weight in the choices and decisions for a sustainable future. The authors therefore recommend a period of experimentation in the form of research and analysis to be carried out in a few selected territories, chosen for their specific characteristics and the questions they raise (degradation of territory, habitats and biodiversity versus landscaped and diversified territory) in terms of health risks (emergence of certain chronic or infectious diseases). These experiments should be carried out in interdisciplinary studies involving all the local actors and could be based on citizen observations and cohorts of people followed up for at least five years. The emerging health indicators would serve as bases for corrective public actions and policies, in favor of " One health " for all. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

POPES , *POSSIBILITY , *HABITATS , *CONSTITUTIONS , *DWELLINGS - Abstract
«To protect the world around us and within us is to take care of ourselves. But we need to constitute a ‘we’ that inhabits the common house.» (FT 17). Pope Francis’ insistence on the constitution of a “we” that inhabits the common house questions the conditions of possibility of this consideration of a common dwelling and habitat. Living in common invites us to specify both the renewed perception of an experience of “not being detached” from a relational life where all the elements of the created contribute to this network of vital interdependencies. But also to value this envelopment in a world of which we are a stakeholder, charged with a role at the service of all: to become a host in both senses of the word, to be received and to receive. ANIMAL behavior , *FOREST restoration , *ZOOLOGICAL surveys , *TREE size , *LEMURS , *HABITATS - Abstract
Five nocturnal lemur species, including Avahi laniger, Daubentonia madagascariensis, Cheirogaleus major, Lepilemur mustelinus, and Microcebus lehilahytsara, which are all clas sified as threatened, are present within Mangabe Reserve. This study aims to understand their habitat use (ecology) and their behaviors. The habitat used (substrate size, forest cover, microhabitats, tree size according to the CBH and height of the animal above the ground) by lemurs was studied within a 100m2 plot where the animals were found along the transect (1000m). The animals' behavior were recorded during 30 minutes to an hour of animal survey. 58.6 % of A. laniger, M. lehilahytsara, C. major and L. mustelinus were frequently observed and living inside the forest. Their habitats vary according to the species: M. lehilahytsara frequents small supports, using a substrate between 0.5 to 5 meters above the ground (level 1); L. mustelinus prefer large and medium supports, occurring on level 2 substrate; C. major can be seen on large supports, approximating level 4 substrate and A. laniger use large supports on level 2 substrates. These species of nocturnal lemurs generally use all parts of the vegetative systems of the tree; the animal is found either inside or at the periphery of the tuft such that: A. laniger and L. mustelinus select the trunks at rest and during movement; C. major and M. lehilahytsara frequently localized on branches during food intake. Four types of behavior and reactions towards humans were marked during the study; their activities are: resting, moving, grooming and feeding. The duration of the common "rest" activity varies from 20 - 29 minutes for these four species. These lemurs have been placed in higher threat categories due to increased human pressure (Tavy) in the Protected Area. These assemblages are closely related to undisturbed forests, even those adapted to open areas, and the restoration of their forest habitats will be recommended for their survival. LEMURS , *PROTECTED areas , *SPECIES , *INVENTORIES , *HABITATS - Abstract
In order to monitor the lemur population trends at the New Protected Area (NAP) Antrema, located in the northwestern of Madagascar, an inventory of lemur species present in the site was performed. Our study was carried out in the NAP of Antrema, from February 1st to March 14th, 2020. Diurnal and nocturnal surveys were carried out in eight different forest fragments in Antrema, Kapahazo, Ampampamena, Antsoherimasiba, Ambato, Antsahelika, Ambanjabe, Ankoririka and Bako. In addition, villager surveys (n=39) were carried out in order to bring more information on lemurs and their habitat. In total, six species of lemurs have been recorded, including Cheirogaleus medius, a species newly recorded for this area. The majority of people surveyed (n=38), did not know about the existence of C.medius in the NAP. However, one person interviewed in Ambanjabe reported that he had seen an individual similar to C. medius. Thus, NAP Antrema hosts six species of lemurs: Eulemur mongoz, Eulemur rufus, Propithecus coronatus, Cheirogaleus medius, Microcebus murinus and Lepilemur aeeclis, the latter three being nocturnal species. The occurrence of Cheirogaleus medius in the NAP Antrema is reported here, for the first time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RAIN forests , *HABITATS - Abstract

- Abstract
The Great Grey Shrike, Lanius excubitor, is a charismatic bird species that rarely leaves indifferent those that have the luck to observe it. Today, Wallonia has the privilege of hosting one of the very last viable breeding populations of this species in Western Europe. Fig. 92 shows that this Walloon breeding nucleus is at present almost isolated between the ones of the Massif Central in France and of Central Germany. The current study, which is based on field work carried out in 2016, starts by providing a new estimate for the Walloon breeding population (110-150 breeding pairs). After providing an analysis of the range of occupied habitats and the specific population dynamics of the species, the study recommends a series of conservation measures aimed at maintaining the species in Wallonia. Due to the extent of its habitat requirements, the Great Grey Shrike can be considered as a bio-indicator of prime interest. Its presence is always indicative of a high-quality environment. Taking into account these requirements will therefore ensure the co-existence of the vast range of habitats and micro-habitats, and hence contribute to the maintenance of biodiversity. Today, Wallonia has a special European responsibility for this species. The future will teach us whether we have been able to preserve this important natural heritage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Review: larval ecology of Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae). This paper reviews the larval ecology of Culicoides Latreille (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in order to bring together knowledge, often very scattered, of breeding sites currently identified worldwide for the main species of Culicoides biting midges. These bloodsucking midges are involved in the transmission to animals of various parasites (protozoa and filarial worms) and viruses. Larval development of Culicoides is usually better in moist substrates rich in organic matter. Each species, however, has its own ecological requirements and therefore has its own specific microhabitat. In this review breeding sites are divided into aquatic and semi-aquatic freshwater substrates, salt or brackish water substrates, terrestrial substrates and anthropic substrates linked to breeding activity. The larval habitats of many species of the genus Culicoides, however, remain undiscovered. Knowledge of breeding sites and their characterization are essential in order to allow the development of effective control strategies against these vector insects, thus allowing the strengthening of livestock vaccination programs and other control methods. The study of currently identified breeding sites could help in guiding the direction of future ecological research investigations and in developing proposals to control these vector midges.

The marshes and coastal areas of the river Dives, Calvados (France), are threatened both by water and sea level rises, coastal floodings and submersions as consequences of the global and local climate changes. The river Dives crosses this dyked marshland which covers nearly 10000 ha and whose impoldering dates since the 12th century. Local stakeholders are much concerned by the global decay of the dikes and wish to benefit from the expertise of a national research program (National Research Agency 2019-2023 DIGUES for Dikes, Interactions, Management, Uses, Environment and Scenario) in order to identify potential adaptation strategies. This exploratory research program aims at identifying natural and man-made habitats that cover the dikes and giving a better understanding of the evolutionary processes of this at-risk territory. The use of drone surveys and of a transect method over the landscape help determine disturbing elements that could have an impact on these flood protection structures. In addition to this alternative approach of habitat monitoring, this research gives the opportunity to establish different trend scenarios for the dikes of the river Dives that represent a central challenge in climate change issues.

In the Aisne Valley, sources of information for the period between the middle of thefourth millennium to the end of the third millennium BC are considered rare, disparate and difficult to characterise. Here as elsewhere, preventive archeology has nevertheless made it possible to improve our understanding with increasing discoveries that have mostly gone unnoticed. Among the 38 occupations dated to the end of the Neolithic period recorded in the region, we observe hollow structures, small assemblages or particular archaeological contexts indicating the presence of occupation of this period. These were discovered during testing or preventive excavations, the initial object of which was usually related to occupations of other periods.

The Multicolored Asian ladybeetle, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas), native to Asia, is an invasive species in many European and American countries. Initially introduced as a biological control agent against aphids and coccids in greenhouses, this alien species rapidly invaded many habitats such as forests, meadows, wetlands, and agricultural crops. This paper reviews the habitats (forests, crops, herbs, gardens and orchards) where H. axyridis has been observed, either during insect samplings or as part of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. Studies have referenced H. axyridis on 106 plant taxa (35 arboreal species, 21 crop species, 27 herbaceous species, 11 ornamental species, and 12 orchard species) and have identified 89 plant-prey relationships (34 arboreal species, 16 crop species, 13 herbaceous species, 10 ornamental species, and 16 orchard species) in different countries. Harmonia axyridis is more abundant in forest areas, principally on Acer, Salix, Tilia and Quercus, than in agroecosystems. Some plant species, such as Urtica dioica L., which surround crops, contain large numbers of H. axyridis and could constitute important reserves of this alien species in advance of aphid invasions into crops. This review highlights the polyphagy and eurytopic aspect of H. axyridis.

This article proposes an updating of information available on historical geography, tribal society and the manifestations of the various levels of power in the Petite Kabylie in the Middle Ages, building upon an account of a journey left by al-Idrīsī, an Arab geographer of the 6th/12th century. Based additionally on a thorough sifting of Arab sources for the mediaeval Maghrib and of the modern literature, this article explores the areas of research dealing with fortifications, habitats and modes of settlement. Starting from examples of land use and settlement from late Antiquity, in some cases contrasting autochthonous social structures (tribes, mountain settlements, etc.) with Roman concepts of land development, we conclude, among other things, that an examination of such issues can only produce satisfactory results if archaeological methods and the specific characteristics of the Maghrib are systematically taken into account.

This thesis is an attempt at a monograph on the Dardanians, indigenous people of the central Balkans, whose territory covers the whole of present-day Kosovo and part of the neighbouring States, Albania, Northern Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, on a period from the 6th to the 1st century BC. After an introduction specifying the geographical and ethnic framework and addressing the problem of the ethnogenesis of this people, the work is organized in four parts. The first deals with the political history of the Dardanians from an exhaustive catalogue of literary and epigraphic sources that mention this people. This history emerges only from Philip II of Macedonia until the Roman conquest. The second part is concerned with political and social organization and is based on the testimony of literary sources but especially on a catalogue of known habitats. It describes a tribal society with a strong military component. The third part provides a picture of resources and key economic activities. The mining of precious metals and cinnabar is the main source of wealth of the country, besides the traditional activities in Antiquity that are agriculture and livestock. A numismatic catalogue closes this chapter. The fourth part is devoted to religion. The study of funerary rites occupies a large place here because local archaeologists have excavated a large number of tumuli recorded in a catalogue. The presence of four rites, burial, cremation, use of cinerary urns, cenotaphs, indicates a variety of funeral customs that pose the problem of the existence of several ethnic groups or social and religious changes. The unique use of tumuli throughout the period clearly links the Dardanians to the Illyrian ethnic group. Taking into account all the discoveries accumulated over the last thirty years, this work usefully complements the old monographs in Serbian or Albanian language., Cette thèse est une tentative de monographie sur les Dardaniens, peuple indigène du centre des Balkans, dont le territoire recouvre la totalité de l’actuel Kosovo et une partie des États voisins, l’Albanie, la Macédoine du nord, le Monténégro, la Serbie, sur une période allant du VIe au Ier siècle av. J.-C.

International audience; A preventive excavation carried out in 2016 at the Achenheim Strasse 2 site, west of Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin) investigated part of a ringed village, over an area of one hectare, attributed to the Bruebach-Oberbergen horizon, an Epiroessenian group settled in Lower Alsace between 4400 and 4250 BC. Most of the storage pits discovered belong to this horizon (at least 211 and probably more than 350), and a long section of enclosure outlining a segment of a circle over 155 linear metres followed on from them, consisting of a continuous V-shaped ditch, on average 1.70 metres wide and of equivalent depth. The ditch was probably flanked on the inside by an earthen embankment, as indicated by the asymmetrical profiles of the fillings, and is interrupted twice by openings with structures assimilated to fortified entrances. The construction of the enclosure was carried out as a single project where only the entrances were redeveloped, to varying degrees. The discovery of this enclosure, identified as a defensive structure, marks an important stage in research into regional Neolithic enclosures. Indeed, up until now, such structures were only represented, from the Early Neolithic to the end of the fifth millennium, by ‘Rosheim-type’ monuments, identified by recent research as ceremonial centres. The number of excavations, the large volume of certain storage pits and the surface covered by the enclosure (which we know extends over at least 3 or 4 hectares) suggest that the site hosted a large population. This unprecedented configuration depicts the organisation of the territory and of Bruebach-Oberbergen society in a very different way from reconstructions based on regional sites, which point rather to settlements composed of farms or small scattered hamlets. We examine the historical context that led to the emergence of this large fortified village and propose a correlation with an episode of collective violence that affected Lower Alsace around 4250 BC. This episode is illustrated at Achenheim itself by very specific human deposits with vestiges of warrior rites (victory celebrations). In addition to the important reconstruction of the historical processes at work in the last third of the fifth millennium, the relative abundance of exhumed material from the site also provides the opportunity to better define the stylistic evolution of pottery, to characterise lithic and bone tools, as well as the husbandry system of the Bruebach-Oberbergen group.; Une fouille préventive conduite en 2016 sur le site d’Achenheim Strasse 2, à l’ouest de Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), a permis l’étude, sur une surface d’un hectare, d’une partie d’un village ceinturé attribué à l’horizon Bruebach-Oberbergen, groupe épiroessénien installé en Basse-Alsace entre 4400 et 4250 av. J.-C.

The expansion of preventive archaeology during these two last decades have made the study of the Protohistoric landscapes possible throughout the country. The number of sites keep growing significantly every year. In addition, with these operations, there is a large development of research projects in Basse-Auvergne, especially on hillforts. To study a region on a long time approach, it is necessary to take all proxies of a site. It is important to start from the object, to the place of the settlements in the landscape. The landscape is like a book, each page contains the traces of successive settlements. In fact, the landscape is modified by economics, socio-political and religious activities, and it is important for archaeologist to understand its structure, and its history. The link between societies and their landscape is an essential component of their cultural identity. The Basse-Auvergne is a laboratory for landscape studies. In fact, this region contains a great number of data, for the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. In this research, there are 289 sites for 487 settlements recorded in a database. These data have been processed into statistical analyses thanks to GIS. Not all periods of Bronze Age or Early Iron Age are well documented. Few cases of study have been identified from which it is possible to do further investigation : Early Bronze Age habitats and necropolis ; Late Bronze Age hillforts ; Early Iron Age habitats and feasts settlements ; enclosures barrows landscape. This research shows the complex dynamics of the landscape use during the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. The history of Protohistoric societies, from simple to complex societies, is not a long evolution. It is a succession of models and social structures. There are specific to each culture of each period, with phases of expansion and contraction. Few interpreting models have been proposed about settlements function, especially to understand if come from economics or sociocultural needs. Palaeoenvironmental data from the area were used to identify the influence of the fluctuation of the environment on societies. The models built into Basse-Auvergne must be compared to other regions of France and in Europe. This way, it will be possible to understand if any types of sites, or landscape use, are a cultural adoption, or if they are an adaptation of a local context., L’étude des paysages protohistoriques est favorisée depuis ces deux dernières décennies par le nombre croissant de sites découverts chaque année.

- Abstract
Knowing the distribution of vectors of zoonoses is fundamental to understand epidemiological dynamics and characterize risk areas. This distribution can be assessed at different scales: regionally, the range of these species defines the limits of occurrence of pathogen transmission and, locally, niches determine the hazard. This latter scale requires a very precise knowledge of the areas that can be gained through the analysis of very high spatial resolution satellite images. As part of a research project on leptospirosis in La Réunion (LeptOI), this study proposes to measure the potential of a Pleiades image (product resampled to to 50 cm) to characterize the local distribution of various small terrestrial mammals in Saint-Paul swamp area. Three trapping campaigns have led to the capture of 134 animals belonging to four of the five species occurring in Reunion Island (Rattus rattus, R. norvegicus, Suncus murinus and Tenrec ecaudatus). An objectbased image analysis of the Pleiades image allowed discriminating ten land use classes with a total accuracy of 83.6%. Landscape indices were calculated from the classification around each trap (shortest distances to each land use class, edge densities and proportion of each patch within buffers defined by a 50 meters or a 100 meters radius). Three areas ("wet", "urbanized" and "dry") are clearly discriminated by these variables, which can be used as ecological determinants of different epidemiological profiles. The wetland area is known as suitable to leptospirosis whereas the urbanized area is a place of co-occurrence of the four species and thus potentially favorable to the exchange of pathogens. - Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Estuarine and coastal ecosystems are composed of spatially restricted habitats fulfilling a nursery function for many demersal fish species. These nursery-dependant species concentrate at the juvenile stage in these habitats, resulting in density-dependent regulation. The predominance of the mechanisms underlying this mortality is still a source of debate in the scientific community, in particular trophic limitation. The overall goal of this thesis is to estimate the trophic carrying capacity within estuarine and coastal nurseries and to provide food for thought on the limiting nature of the trophic factor in their functioning. The approach was carried out on two spatio-temporal scales: fine on the Seine estuary (nursery habitat and. growth periods of juvenile fish) and wide on the Bay of Biscay (several nurseries over two decades). Results (fine scale) support the importance of the trophic factor of key habitats in the nursery function of the Bay of Seine, including the estuary mouth and the intertidal mudflats. As these are largely degraded in this estuary, special attention may be given within the framework of the restoration the nursery function. Moreover, young of the year juvenile fish are more likely to suffer from a lack of food resources at the end of their first growth period (autumn). Results (wide scale) on the Bay of Biscay also support the occurrence of this trophic limitation, even though it most probably interacts with others, in these complex and dynamic ecosystems., Les zones côtières et estuariennes remplissent la fonction de nourricerie pour de nombreuses espèces de poissons démersaux.

Âge du fer ,Iron Age ,Dardanie ,Kosovo ,Dardania ,Settlements ,[SHS.HIST]Humanities and Social Sciences/History ,Habitats - Abstract
This doctoral thesis deals with documented Iron Age habitats on the territory of presentday Kosovo, which represents an area of 10 887 km², corresponding to the central part of the ancient Dardania which also extended to the south from Serbia, north of Macedonia, to the northeast of Albania. This dissertation is divided in two main parts). (In the first part is presentedcatalog of all sites), excavated or not, known to date, classified by typology and size, accompanied by a description of the characteristics of the habitats and archaeological materials, to establish their chronology. The corpus comprises a total of 45 habitats, of which 29 have been excavated. On the basis of the material studied, the chronology can be divided into four phases: The oldest XI-IX century BC. J.-C, is a transition phase between the recent Bronze and the old Iron; then the Iron Age is divided into two periods: the first phase of the Iron Age (8th-7th centuries BC), and the second phase of the Iron Age (6th - 4th century BC); the last phase corresponds to the Hellenistic period until the arrival of the Romans (IV-I centuries BC). Thesecond part provides a summary of the 1. Typology and distribution of inhabited areas, taking into account their relationship with necropolises, 2. The extent of habitats and their architectural features, and 3. The material culture they harbored. Three types of habitats were identified: highrise habitats, terrace dwellings and lowland habitats; these habitats can be grouped into four regions, with the exception of the Valaç habitat, which remains an isolated case in the north of the country; in each region, the sites are visible from each other. The necropolises, 51 in total, also occupy an important place. There are two types of necropolis: the tumular necropolises - the most numerous, and the non-tumular necropolises. For both types, their main characteristics, distribution, chronology, funerary rites and their relation to habitats were studied. The second chapter made it possible to establish a hierarchy of habitats according to their size, to distinguish four types of fortification, and to present the first known plans of Dardanian huts. The last chapter of the thesis studies the dishes and the objects of domestic life. For each chronological phase, the nature of the pasta and the characteristic forms that make it possible to follow the continuities and the innovations are given. The material studied shows that, alongside food storage and food preparation, metallurgical and weaving activities are also important.

Deal with the dual economic and social crisis in the 1980s, many of the Third World farming communities have been able to develop agro-pastoral systems and forestry in order to stamp rural poverty. The case study of Batoufam situated in the western highlands of Cameroon is an edifying illustration. Studies based on surveys and remote sensing data show a dynamic that leads to a gallery forest snacking, isolated groves and alpine meadows in favor of the habitat, communication channels and farms. Despite the increased rate of afforestation in the soils of the range 30, the future of these residual plant formations remains concerned because of population growth and anthropogenic pressures on the lands. Abstract: The phytoecological study of the alder forests of north-east Algeria shows that these habitats with boreal affinities harbour very high species richness (>400 species) and complex structures, which suggest their ancient origin. They correspond phytosociologically to two syntaxa, the Campanulo alatae-Alnenion glutinosae (riparian alder forests) and the Rusco hypophylli-Alnetum glutinosae (peat-forming alder carrs), respectively. Their degraded state and their regressive dynamics, observed during the 14 years of the study, reveal their precarious situation and their rapid ongoing decline under the influence of human-induced uncontroled disturbances (cutting, burning, draining, dumping…). With regard to their ecological, historical and patrimonial importance, the alder forests of Algerian Numidia should be urgently protected, with the aim of assuring the perennity of their exceptional floristic corteges.
