Abstract

International audience; OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR) (according to the SFAR, Score For Allergic Rhinitis and the ARIA Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma classification) in the French adult general population and to describe its impact on quality of life, quality of sleep and prevalence of associated ocular symptoms. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey was carried out in 2006 in a French population-based sample. The data were collected by a polling organization in 3 waves using face-to-face interviews at home. Subjects answered to questionnaires of AR management, quality of life (SF-12), quality of sleep (MOS-Sleep) and daytime sleepiness (Epworth). Statistical analysis was performed using SAS software. RESULTS: Among the 10, 038 interviewed subjects, (mean age: 43 years), the overall prevalence of AR was 31%, with regional variations (from 26% in South West to 37% in the Mediterranean area). The prevalence was higher in younger subjects (39% in 18-25 years, 35% in 26-35 years, vs. 22% in >65 years, p or =7 constituted the AR group and 706 subjects with SFAR

Abstract

International audience; Malignancies are rare young French adults but represent the third significant cause of death in the cohort of 15-24 years of age. The aim of this study was to investigate incidence and survival rates of French adolescents and young adults with cancer. All cases of cancer occuring over a 20-year period (1978-1997) in the cohort of patients aged 15 to 24, were obtained from nine population-based registries (10 % of the French population). Basal cell carcinomas of the skin were excluded. 1161 and 1884 cases were recorded in adolescents and young adults, respectively. Overall incidence rates (IR) were 161.4/10(6) in adolescents aged 15-19 years (M/F ratio = 1.3), and 252.6/10(6) in young adults aged 20-24 years (M/F ratio : 1.2). During the 1978-97 period, the IRs appeared stable over the years, +0.4 % [CI95 % = -2.3 ; +3.1] (p = 0.79) for adolescents and +1.7 % [CI95 % = -4.0 ; +7.3] (p = 0.57) for young adults. Five-year overall survival rates were 69.1 % [CI95 % = 66.4-71.8] for adolescents and 74.5 % [CI95 % = 72.3-76.7] for young adults. The 5-year survival rate for patients 15-24 years improved from 62.0 % (CI95 % = 57.5-66.5) in 1978-82 to 80.2 % (IC95 % = 77.7-82.8) in 1993-97. Noteworthy, results in adolescents and young adults are poor compared to the ones from their younger counterparts, especially in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Ewing's sarcoma, osteosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and astrocytoma. Further studies are warranted to elucidate whether these differences are due to intrinsic biological properties of the tumor or to differences in clinical practices in the two populations.

Abstract

International audience; INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer is the most common cause of death from malignant disease in the world. Our objective was to describe the progression of this cancer's incidence, and the changing distribution of histological types in France between 1978 and 2000. METHODS: National incidence rates were obtained by modelling lung cancer incidence data provided by the French cancer registries, taking into account national mortality data. These registries also provided information about histological type. RESULTS: In the year 2000, with 28,000 estimated new diagnoses, lung cancer represented 10.0% of all incident cancers and was responsible for 18.1% of deaths from cancer. From 1980 to 2000, the incidence rose from 47.4 to 52.2 per hundred thousand in men and from 3.7 to 8.6 per hundred thousand in women. The risk of developing lung cancer, which remained constant in men, has increased considerably (+451%) between the generation of women born in 1953 and those born in 1913. The proportion of epidermoid cancers has dropped whilst that of adenocarcinomas has risen sharply. CONCLUSIONS: The last few years have seen a large increase in the incidence of lung cancer in women and an increasing incidence of adenocarcinoma in both men and women.
