ABSTRACT In a recent essay, Sören Stenlund tries to align Wittgenstein’s approach to the foundations and nature of mathematics with the tradition of symbolic mathematics. The characterization of symbolic mathematics made by Stenlund, according to which mathematics is logically separated from its external applications, brings it closer to the formalist position. This raises naturally the question whether Wittgenstein holds a formalist position in philosophy of mathematics. The aim of this paper is to give a negative answer to this question, defending the view that Wittgenstein always thought that there is no logical separation between mathematics and its applications. I will focus on Wittgenstein’s remarks about arithmetic during his middle period, because it is in this period that a formalist reading of his writings is most tempting. I will show how his idea of autonomy of arithmetic is not to be compared with the formalist idea of autonomy, according to which a calculus is “cut off” from its applications. The autonomy of arithmetic, according to Wittgenstein, guarantees its own applicability, thus providing its own raison d’être.

Forest-dwellers in the Brazilian Amazon public forests share the management of the territory and natural resources with governmental agencies, subjecting themselves to State rules. This study aims to evaluate the perception of stakeholders about the autonomy of traditional communities to carry out community timber forest management (CFM) in two federal protected areas. A Swot analysis revealed mismatches in priorities among stakeholder groups (Communities, Government and Partners). Four autonomy parameters were evaluated by 111 stakeholders using a satisfaction questionnaire. Communities and Government had similar perceptions of the autonomy of communities to develop CFM, while Partners were pessimistic. Stakeholders showed greater satisfaction with communities’ social organization than with their business management ability. Licensing, operational tools and administrative knowledge were perceived as bottlenecks for community enterprises. Nevertheless, targeted public policies and a minimum regulatory requirement for CFM may guarantee community autonomy to maintain their way of life and make their forest enterprises viable.

Over the last decade, a vast improvement on intraocular lens (IOL) options steered cataract surgery towards a more sophisticated approach concerning the final refractive goal. On a particular note, the availability and adoption of toric IOLs, either in monofocal or multifocal platforms. This allowed for a better final quality of vision, but also addressed several complex steps, especially regarding proper diagnostic assessment during surgical planning. More than 50% of the patients who undergo cataract surgery have corneal astigmatism ≥ 0.75 diopter (D), which is within the range of surgically treatable astigmatism and may significantly limit an optimal visual outcome if left uncorrected.

Variation in the scanning strategy for β-type Ti alloys during additive manufacturing (AM) enables the fabrication of a singlecrystal-like microstructure possessing a crystallographic texture, in which the low-Young’s modulus- direction is aligned along a specific direction. Thus, metal biomaterial with low elasticity, comparable to the bone Young’s modulus, can be developed by AM, which will contribute to suppress the stress shielding of bone and prevent degradation of bone tissue anisotropy.

The microstructures, tensile properties, and fatigue lives of the forged Ti-17 using a 1500-ton forging simulator subjected to different solution treatments and a common aging treatment under both load- and strain-controlled conditions to evaluate high cycle fatigue and low cycle fatigue lives, respectively were examined. Then, the tensile properties, microstructures, and relationships between fatigue lives and the microstructural factors were discussed. The fatigue limit under load-controlled conditions increases with increasing solution treatment temperature up to 1143 K, which is in the (α + β) region. However, it decreases with further increase in the solution treatment temperature to 1203 K in the b region. The fatigue ratio at fatigue limit is increasing with decreasing solution treatment temperature, namely increasing the volume fraction of the primary α phase, and it relates well qualitatively with the volume fraction of the primary α phase when the solution treatment temperature is less than the b transus temperature. The fatigue life under strain-controlled conditions to evaluate the low cycle fatigue life increases with decreasing solution treatment temperature, namely increasing the volume fraction of the primary α phase. The fatigue life under strain-controlled conditions to evaluate the low cycle fatigue life relates well quantitatively with the tensile true strain at breaking of the specimen and the volume fraction of the primary α phase for each total strain range.

Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
In local societies, people utilize indigenous ecological knowledge to engage in their livelihood. The study draws from a comparison of the indigenous calendars based on seasonal winds used by the Sama-Bajau fishermen in Banggai Islands, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. In previous studies about Sama-Bajau people, their ecological background of fishing activity was overlooked, and their seasonal calendar in coral reef area was only reported. This study conducted a qualitative research through semi-structured interviews and participant observation in four settlements. Based on a comparison between the main and other settlements, the study analyzed their indigenous ecological calendar using scientific data and comparing with other society’s data. The results revealed that the classifications of each calendar are critically different. Therefore, according to interviewees, they cannot determine if they previously resided in a region. The findings also suggested that they recognize seasons with a punctual and an irregular classification. Today, they face a contradiction between the indigenous seasonal and modern calendars. Given this problem, a relationship of antagonism and harmony with seasonal knowledge and modern knowledge is observed. A discussion of their adaptation process regarding the diachronic maritime ecology is provided.

In high-pressure die casting, attention has been paid to the J factor, which is defined by the speed of the metal injected at the gate and the shape of the gate. In casting experiments using a piston die, the porosity of the product can be reduced by increasing the J factor such that the metal flow passing through the gate forms an atomized flow. To clarify the underlying mechanisms, we developed a system for simulating a two-phase flow of air and aluminum by large-scale calculations of turbulent flow. During the development of the system, we injected metal into an open space and performed imaging to confirm the state of the atomized flow. The system was then verified by reproducing the atomized flow. The analysis results visualized the many small turbulent vortices generated in the thick part far from the gate. We demonstrated that the change from small to longitudinal vortices promoted entrainment of air into the aluminum and increased the efficiency of air expulsion outside the die through an increase in the J factor.

Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
Train is the most frequently used means of transportation in Tokyo. Train stations are gaining attention as commercial complex today, and higher level of comfort is being demanded for the indoor environment. Open structure of the train station and semi-outdoor like environment suggest that the thermal comfort condition is relaxed compared to indoor comfort standards. The objective of this study is to investigate the thermal comfort condition within train stations and to clarify the appropriate target for environmental control. Field surveys were carried out in summer, autumn and winter during July 2004 to August 2006 in four train stations located in urban area of Tokyo. Concourses were not air-conditioned except one station where spot cooling was operated in summer near the ticket gate. Each survey was conducted from 7:00 to 20:00 for 3 to 11 days per season per station for a total of 81 days. The survey consisted of thermal environment measurement and thermal comfort questionnaire. More than 80% of passengers felt thermally comfortable within the range of 19 to 29 °C SET*. However, acceptability zone was found to be 19 to 32 °C SET*, and it is recommended to design naturally ventilated train stations to fulfil this target.

In Brazil, the contemporary youth's condition is produced by the recent expansion of schooling opportunities and by the diversity of experiences that young people produce in social instances that are different from the traditional institutions of social reproduction. The schools to which they have access do not produce effective quality because they work based on representations that have little to do with real teenagers and young people. Thus, in the case of Brazil, one must relativize the motto that school education « makes youth » and consider that the modern youth's condition will only be attained when it becomes possible to combine the universalization of primary and secondary schools and the quality that this condition requires, allowing young people to live the integration in the work universe as experimentation and not in a compulsory way, based on another social model that garantees the ideals of universalization, the rights to school and work to all the young people.

Literary works may be used as pretexts to improve linguistic knowledge in the context of a language course, but in the lecture class of literature, it is literature itself that becomes the object of learning. And it is through the lens of the literary works being studied that learners of French as a foreign language are invited to take another look at the culture of the target language. Knowing the difficulty of reading literary works in French, the task of the teacher as a reader and cultural mediator is fundamental to making literary works more accessible and to developing the pleasure of reading: this particular pleasure that requires an understanding of text for FFL learners as for everyone.

Rampe de compression ,[SPI.OTHER]Engineering Sciences [physics]/Other ,Effet de courbure ,Compression ramp ,Curvature effect - Abstract
Shock wave/boundary layer interactions (SWBLI) are present in various aerospace engineering applications. They can be associated with separated regions yielding low-frequency unsteadiness, which have mainly been studied in planar geometries. The present study aims at characterizing this type of interaction in a cylindrical configuration. A direct numerical simulation solver has been developed and validated with various test cases. It is based on a high-order finite difference based hybrid schemes (6th order centered scheme/5thorder WENO), extended to curvilinear geometries. Transverse curvature effects on properties of spatially developing supersonic boundary layer at Mach 3 are first examined. It is shown that the increase of the relative curvature of the boundary layer tends to reduce the fluctuation energy at lower frequencies near the wall, while reinforcing the perturbations at higher frequencies in the upper zone of the boundary layer. In comparison with the planar case, the transverse curvature leads to a significant re-organization of the boundary layer structures and a subsequent modified behavior of the invariants of anisotropy turbulent stress tensor. It however only leads to slightly modified distributions of Reynolds stress and a rather similar overall balance of turbulent kinetic energy through the boundary layer. The second part of this study is dedicated to the unsteady motions of the shock/separation zone in a cylinder/compression flare configuration for which the full cylindrical geometry is taken into account. The shock distortions in the azimutal direction appears to be mainly associated to the organization of the upstream vortex structures and the subsequent azimutal fluctuations of the separation line. It is shown that the energy of the fluctuating wall pressure is more amplified for higher order azimutal modes. The contributions to lateral forces, associated to the first mode, are dominated by low-frequencies only upstream of the separation line in the intermittent region. They become more dominant in the middle frequency range downstream of the reattachment zone on the ramp. It is also shown that the low-frequency activity at the wall is progressively due to higher order azimuthal modes through the interaction zone.; Les phénomènes d’interactions choc/couche limite sont dimensionnants pour de nombreuses applications des domaines de l’aéronautique et du spatial.

In order to verify the factorial structures of the Torrance verbal and figural tests, two activities of each instrument were applied with 193 students from the 10th and 12th years of education in Portugal. We tried to demonstrate that the collinearity of the fluency and flexibility variables could create methodological artifacts that hinder the understanding of the internal structure underlying the test. The principal component analysis without control of collinearity indicated a solution composed of four basic factors that separeted activities. Controlling for collinearity, we found a new solution, which also contained four factors that, unlike the previous result, grouped variables with similar processes but of different activities. The verbal and figural content is also an important element in the factor structure. This new arrangement makes more sense with the theory that underlies the instruments separating the different processes and content which are being measured by the activities.

Abstract Procedures used for identifying giftedness have been widely discussed in the literature. The present study aimed to investigate the evidence of validity based on the internal structure of a self-report scale to identify characteristics of giftedness. The sample consisted of 276 Elementary and Middle School students, aged between 9 and 12 years, and was 60.0% female. The instrument used was the first version of this scale, which was composed of 44 items related to the topic. Exploratory Factor Analysis was carried out, and the results revealed a two-factor solution, explaining 40.4% of the total variance. The first factor was denominated Socio-emotional Characteristics, and the second factor was denominated Cognitive Characteristics. The results corroborate the data in the scientific literature, which suggest that giftedness is a multidimensional construct that encompasses attributes that go beyond the intellectual scope.

Abstract Creativity and innovation have been highlighted as essential skills for the 21st century, especially if we consider that both skills can promote human potential by eliciting positive aspects of the individual. These skills have been valued in different contexts. The purpose of this text is to discuss the notions of creativity and innovation as independent constructs and to discuss the relationships between these concepts according to the scientific literature. Three different propositions will be presented, namely, treating these constructs as synonyms, as distinct from each other or as complimentary.

Kiwa Nakano
- Abstract
Most of the researchers think Japanese festivals as a place which overcomes heterogeneity and plurality in urban society. Therefore, they often neglect to consider the process through which this heterogeneity appears. As a matter of fact, heterogeneity is built through various conflicts, caused by economic and political factors. In this paper, I focus on the Gion festival of the drums in Kokura, which was in the past the "summer festival of the Yasaka shrine". At first held by the inhabitants of the down town of Kokura castle, it began to attract more participants from other parts of Japan at the beginning of the 90's. Beyond the differences in the costumes and the rythms, the former define themselves as the "holders" of the tradition, whereas the latter assume their innovative way of doing, legitimized by their popularity among the public. Thirty two patients with refractory central and neuropathic pain of peripheral origin were treated by chronic stimulation of the motor cortex between May 1993 and January 1997. The mean follow-up was 27. 3 months. The first 24 patients were operated according to the technique described by Tsubokawa. The last 13 cases (8 new patients and 5 reinterventions) were operated by a technique including localization by superficial CT reconstruction of the central region and neuronavigator guidance. The position of the central sulcus was confirmed by the use of intraoperative somatosensory evoked potentials. The somatotopic organisation of the motor cortex was established peroperatively by studying the motor responses at stimulation of the motor cortex through the dura. Ten of the 13 patients with central pain (77%) and nine of the 12 patients with neuropathic facial pain had experienced substantial pain relief (75%). One of the 3 patients with post-paraplegia pain was clearly improved. A satisfactory result was obtained in one patient with pain related to plexus avulsion and in one patient with pain related to intercostal herpes zoster. None of the patients developed epileptic seizures. The position of the stimulating poles effective on pain corresponded to the somatotopic representation of the motor cortex. The neuronavigator localization and guidance technique proved to be most useful identifying the appropriate portion of the motor gyrus. It also allowed the establishment of reliable correlations between electrophysiological-clinical and anatomical data which may be used to improve the clinical results and possibly to extend the indications of this technique.

Abstract Although resilience is a relevant construct, there are no Brazilian instruments available to identify the resilient potential in children. Considering this, an instrument called Children’s Resilience Markers was developed. The study included 500 children from five different groups, aged 8 to 12. Through ANOVA, it was possible to notice that Children’s Resilience Markers was able to differentiate groups that presented higher resilience abilities. Children’s Resilience Markers presented good validity evidences. However, other studies must be carried out in order to reach a greater understanding of its psychometric characteristics.

This article, based on research undertaken by InfoCom Research Inc. for NTT, examines individual/residential use of the telephone. Generally speaking, use of the telephone has become increasingly diversified from messages/inquiries to chatting, and this trend can also be observed in Japan where many socio- economic changes have taken place since WWII.
