Abstract This photographic essay explores solid waste management and recycling practices among residents of Zaandam and other towns in the Netherlands. The study was based on ethnographic research conducted in September 2019 and December 2021 that included street ethnography, landscape observation, and recorded interviews. The photo essay presents a narrative of the researcher’s observations and experiences, highlighting the challenges and successes of waste management and recycling practices in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands has a longstanding, ambitious environmental policy with regard to the recovery and recycling of materials. Currently, 79% of its waste is recycled and the residual waste is mainly used for energy generation, which in turn is part of the solution toward a shift in energy production through renewables. The initiative “Netherlands as Circular Hotspot” aims at positioning the Netherlands as an international example for circular business and develop a circular economy in the Netherlands by 2050. Based on this political ambition, the Dutch ecosystem has started a transition toward a circular economy. The plastics recycling market in the Netherlands is constantly evolving in parallel with the adaptation of more circular business models due to the impact of climate change and resource scarcity.To accompany the intense development of the circular economy in the Netherlands, Veolia decided to acquire in 2015 a Dutch company named AKG Polymers that now has almost 50 years of experience in plastics recycling. This plant in the Netherlands is now Veolia’s global center of excellence for recycling polypropylene. Veolia is accompanying brands, such as Philips, in their commitments to making their products and services more environmentally friendly. This innovative dynamic around recycling is also encouraged by a more collaborative approach, breaking down the traditional silos, and creating new markets and business models in the Netherlands and abroad.

The article analyses how the decrees of the Council of Trent regarding marriage were used by the Church of Rome as a tool to contrast mixed marriages in Early Modern Europe. It investigates how these decrees were evaded by local churches in order to administer a practice of confessional coexistence impossible to eradicate, and how they were manipulated by actors – even Protestants – to put an end to undesirable unions. It also presents the interpretation that the Church of Rome made of the Tametsi to resolve the age-old issue of mixed marriages in the Low Countries, issuing the Benedictine Declaration, later applied to other contexts with a strong Protestant presence – above all out-side Europe. Although the Council of Trent claimed to have fixed a homogeneous and flawless nuptial ritual, the various local practices did not always adapt to it. Indeed, they bypassed it; sometimes refused it. This led parish priests and missionaries to turn to Rome for the resolution of concrete cases. The decisions taken for individual cases became a normative reference point. It was produced by the continuous interaction and negotiation with local churches and went on in fact to profoundly influence the sacramental rituality of marriages, which Tametsi had claimed were fixed and immutable.

Most early modern religious diaspora groups in Europe cultivated narratives of persecution and martyrdom and handed them on to future generations. Yet the function of such narratives changed in each migrant generation. Focusing on printed publications of Netherlandish exile communities in Germany and the Northern Netherlands, this article argues that the reception of persecution narratives underwent drastic changes and stimulated new religious identities that allowed believers to see themselves as part of a religious minority even if they now belonged to the dominant groups in society.

The multinational army, under Alessandro Farnese, had a large presence of Italians. In the light of new archival documentation this paper deals with their recruitment, careers and employment. The preferential treatment accorded by the general to his fellow countrymen created him problems with soldiers of other nationalities and with the Spanish court and contributed greatly to the decision of his removal from power. The biography of Paolo Rinaldi, written to defend the memory of Alessandro, memorials of his officers and their correspondence indicate what was the reason for his behaviour. The general aimed to get the support of the local population, and especially of the peasants, for military operations and Italians, thanks to the stricter discipline he could impose on them, could help him in achieving his objectives, better than soldiers of other nations. Not always his hopes were realized.

The paper focuses on the objects of cultural transfer present in the dwellings of the Carniolian nobility in the first half of the 18th century. It is mostly based on the analysis of probate inventories. The analysis shows that objects of cultural transfer can be found in almost all inventories. These objects, which concern different segments of domestic material and intellectual life such as clothes, pieces of furniture, etc., made the life more comfortable, fashionable, interesting and luxuorious and contributed to the individual and social prestige of the nobles as well as to their vanity. Most of the items from abroad came from the German and Italian regions, but we can easily find objects from the Ottoman Empire (carpets), France (clothes), the Netherlands (lace) or America (coffee, tobacco, chocholate). Important items in noble homes, which almost exclusively came from abroad, were books. Novelties such as coffee, tea, and chocolate point to more peaceful and intimate forms of socializing. The channels of cultural transfer include voyages of noblemen and noblewomen, contacts with friends abroad, the professional commerce and the strangers living or working in Carniola. This article is about the effect of local tailored interventions to counter (violent) extremism, and therefore contributes to the academic and policy debates. It focusses on local, professional perspectives on person-specific interventions utilising a Dutch case study as the basis. The interventions are part of the wider-ranging counter terrorism policy that entails (local) measures that are deployed in relation to designated high-risk individuals and groups. By reviewing policy documents and conducting semi-structured interviews, the exploratory study concludes that the key factors for a hand-tailored intervention are a solid network, expert knowledge to assess potential signs of extremist ideology, an awareness of not having too many concurrent measures, good inter-institutional cooperation and information-sharing. The professionals involved felt that person-specific interventions have contributed to reducing the threat of religious extremism in the Netherlands. Nonetheless, municipal officials and security agents emphasised the importance of setting realistic goals and a focus on preventive rather than repressive measures. Furthermore, despite the central role that municipal actors play, they run up against problems such as cooperation within the security and care sector. National entities appear to emphasize information-gathering and monitoring more than community-focused cooperation. Thereby questioning whether, on the national level, local professionals are perceived as playing a key role in dealing with extremism.

The article examines the place of India in the imagination of writers of the Grand Siècle. It highlights the contrast between India as an object commercial, political and even military competition between Holland, Portugal and England, while for the French imagination it remains a "fictionalized" territory, fed and consolidated by ancient thought. It also mentions that this thought is found in early modernity, with Le Cinquiesme Livre de Rabelais.

It is a paradox of communication and media studies that while media are widely seen as key institutions in the “project of time, space and life management” (Silverstone, 2005), not enough attention is given to the ways in which mediation is socially produced and becomes politically effective. Although rarely taken into account as an analytical variable in studies of international development communication, mediation is implicit in donor-driven practice. In the act of framing a problem and favouring a solution, and of communicating about a problem and solution in particular ways, donors seek to mediate their complex relationships with recipient countries and with citizens at both ends of the donor-recipient equation. But which forms of media engagement do they propose to these ends? How is mediated communication aimed at doing good for the citizens of recipient countries? How is it used to communicate do-gooding to the citizens of donor countries? Which media technologies are foregrounded and which media-driven practices are favoured to promote one and the other? Which perceptions of media engagement influence donors’ strategic choices, and how are citizens understood in those choices? Based on a qualitative study of a large-scale mediated communication intervention mandated by the British Foreign Commonwealth Office and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote reconciliation and democratize media systems in the successor states to the former Yugoslavia in 2005 (Enghel, 2014), this paper examines forms of media engagement at work in donor-driven international development communication and considers their uses as components of a politics of mediation.

With a comparative design and a mixed-methods approach, this research with Thai female marriage migrants in the Netherlands offers a novel examination of the theory of identity intersectionality. By explicitly asking Thai females about the meanings they attribute to their ethnic identity or their female identity or their intersectional identity of being a Thai woman, we provide a systematic comparison of identity meanings. It is found that the intersectional identity has some unique meanings and is more strongly associated with a perceived marginalized societal position and feelings of discrimination. The implications for intersectionality theory and social psychology are discussed.
