In this article the author analyzes the interaction and mutual influence of such ways of speaking, which we call Language Writing and metarealism, which he reveals on the example of the poems Sun (1987) by Michael Palmer and Oil (1999) by Aleksei Parshchikov. Palmer's poem is a decentralized statement in which syntactic interruptions, complex symbolism, and an abundance of references create an embodied heteroglossia. The catastrophe of the meaning and the assembly of voices here are somehow structured by the central symbol — the Sun — from the headline of The Sun newspaper of July 22, 1986 (“A headless man walks, lives / for four hours”) to the artificial light of consumption centers. And the semantics of dying, references to Baudelaire in the poem, as well as Palmer's separate “Baudelaire Series” somehow admit that one of the many overtones of Sun poem is “The Voyage”, the final text of Fleurs du mal. Marjorie Perloff points out the difference between the approaches of Palmer and Parshchikov in the article “Russian Postmodernism: An Oxymoron?”, where, comparing their texts, she writes that the approach of the second is closer to Arthur Rimbaud, not the split subject Language Poetry. However, the similarity and differences between the approaches of Palmer and Parshchikov are similar to the similarity and differences between Charles Baudelaire and Arthur Rimbaud, when both use the mythopoetics of swimming as death, but incomplete, or rather incompleting. But if the first include it in the context of criticism of commodity fetishism and the subversive power of allegory (according to Benjamin), then the second in the context of “clairvoyance” and observation of the “black and cold” waters of capitalistic Europe. So the poem Oil by Parshchikov is close to the poem Sun by Palmer both in the depiction of the world in a frozen catastrophe, in the collapse of the language, and in the political dimension. And as in the poem Sun through heteroglossia, the symbolism of the crisis meaning, a permanent apocalypse Palmer creates political criticism of the symbolic order of the consumption society, including intellectual commodity fetishism, as in the poem Oil with a multilayered image of raw materials, including as an ideological concept, Parshchikov opens up new ways for analytical political poetry.

3. Une reconstruction progressiste du passé : Renaissance et Risorgimento dans « Old Pictures in Florence » de Robert Browning

One of the main roles played by Italian history in the works of Robert Browning is to serve as a model for a general political reflection on how societies evolve and on the connections between art and politics, which are as valid as regards nineteenth-century European history as more specifically English debates within the Victorian society. At the centre of the poem ‘Old Pictures in Florence’ stands the figure of Giotto’s Campanile, whose design was left unfinished after the fall of the Florentine Republic, as the symbol of this reflection. From an aesthetic as from a political viewpoint, the fact that it remained unfinished is precisely what gives the work of art its main strength, inasmuch as it leaves open the necessary space for a taking up, a progress rooted in the ambitions of the past, and the promise of a political evolution which uses the past, against all reactionary fantasies, as the model for a progressive momentum. This apparently paradoxical point of view, which searches the past for the forces of renewal, is in direct opposition to the reactionary trends that can be traced in the majority of Victorian attempts to extol the past, first among which are the Young England movement and the Oxford Movement, which Browning satirized in ‘The Flight of the Duchess’ (1845) and ‘Bishop Blougram’s Apology’ (1855). This dimension of Browning’s work echoes a reflection on the role of the past in politics, which he opened in Sordello (1840) : instead of looking for a Golden Age in contrast to which the present could be criticised, he adopted the viewpoint of the past itself, which allowed him to reconsider the contemporary situation in the perspective of a longer evolution, symmetrically opposed to such reactionary nostalgia. Browning does not regard the Florentine Golden Age as a lost perfection which should be recreated, but rather as outlining in its very shortcomings the promise of future progress. In this, his reflections espouse the impetus of the Risorgimento, which he was witnessing first-hand in Florence (his wife, Elizabeth Barrett, gave an account of this in Casa Guidi Windows, 1855). This political movement gave artists a central role in creating the political identity for their contemporaries. Browning explores the way in which reformism can achieve real progress, by turning reconstruction into a form of reinvention, against the revolutionary hope of making a clean slate of the past.

There has been a clear tendency in Arab-American studies to focus too much on the political content of Nye’s pre- and post- 9/11 writings, ignoring many important as- pects of her career in the process. Describing Nye’s writing as simply counter-narrative or subversive is deficient if one has to take into consideration Nye’s involvement in pub- lic educational programs along with the larger body of her writings about nature, care ethics and peace. This study seeks to restore a place for Nye against the background of contemporary American poetry, chiefly among other peace activists like Wendell Berry and Denise Levertov. A closer inspection of Nye’s poetry written over a period of forty years, therefore, reveals that the political content nested in her poems is only a smaller component of a larger ethical project that she has been carrying out for decades. Her ethical engagement is primarily about sharing a way of existence and a life ideal : paci- fist, assiduous and responsible., Les études arabo-américaines, qui sont en plein essor depuis vingt ans, ont tendance à sur-focaliser sur le contenu politique dans l’écriture de Naomi Shihab Nye.

In 1820, with the Cadix Constitution being re-established, politics invaded all fields, including poetry. Many verses written then have since disappeared. But those that can be recovered have great value for understanding the evolution of a public opinion they intended to craft, and they in fact reflected. Poems dedicated to Riego, who in the course of four years fell from grace to the scaffold, are particularly meaningful from that point of view. They permit to see how the general’s followers elaborated a highly efficient public relations system which quickly owned him the huge popularity he experimented whereas, even before the reestablishment of Ferdinand VII as an absolute monarch, in 1823, serviles charged him with all imaginable crimes, and called not only for him to be executed, but for his body to be skinned.

Our proposition is to read a certain moment of Chilean and Argentine poetry, specifically through the notion of political dictum. We will address what we consider an extreme modulation, focusing on Martin Gambarotta’s (Buenos Aires, 1968) Punctum and Yanko González Cangas’s (Buin, Chile, 1971) Metales Pesados (Heavy Metals). We will read these books as optical and acoustic scenes, as “little machines” from which new forms of the sensible (Rancière 2009, 2013) can be analyzed, that is to say, as new distributions of the space, the status of the word and the nature of the gaze in the context of political poetry, as well as in relation to some turning points in Latin American poetry.

Idea Vilariño had radical political ideas and was a left activist in her life, but wrote relatively few political poems, and did it in an extremely personal and intimate way. This essay explores the biographical roots of her political poetry, related to the historical context and the circumstances in which her poems were written. It also addresses the tension between her existential nihilism and her drive for revolutionary action in her political poems.

While writing occasional poems in verses and free verse, Jacques Rabemananjara has used the sonnet to express his view of Malagasy identity, of which he offers a new definition. His position is not at all one which bluntly opposes Western forms of poetry and other forms that would be more specific to Madagascar : rather, the poet seems to alternate between political poems, whose form would be more « free », and love poems, which follow Western rules of prosody. The analysis of a collection of free verse – Antsa – and a collection of sonnets –Les Ordalies – intends to trace and shed new light on the evolution in the poet’s writing, as he constantly renegotiates his relation to form.
