One of the ways of legitimizing oppressive practices consists of reducing subordinates to the category of mere body. The conceptualization of women, just as that of non-human animals has taken place within the framework of the Culture / Nature, Mind / Body and Subject / Object dualisms. The ascription to the devalued element of the dualisms has expressed and legitimized the condition of privileged target of desire and of violence simultaneously. This object of desire, turned into meat, arouses love and hate, desire of possession and of annihilation. Endeavouring to comprehend this phenomenon, this study analyzes the conceptual framework that underpins desire in patriarchal culture.

Intense sediment transport experiments were performed in a gravity driven open-channel flow with two sizes of non-spherical acrylic particles of diameter dp=1.0mm and dp=3.0 mm, and a maximum packing volumetric concentration of 0.55 m3/m3. Two flow conditions were adapted to ensure the same sediment transport regime for particle sizes as sheet flows (Shields numbers above unity) with an equi-repartition of the total net sediment transport rate between the suspended load and the bedload (Suspension number around unity). An acoustic scattering-based system, the Acoustic Concentration and Velocity Profiler (ACVP) and electric conductivity probes, the Conductivity Concentration Profiler (CCP) with two different vertical resolutions of 1mm (CCP1mm) and 2 mm (CCP2mm),were used to measure time-resolved and averaged concentration profiles across the bed-load and suspension layers. A detailed comparative analysis of concentration and sheet flow layer thickness measurements obtained with the two systems across both the suspension and the bedload layers is presented. The capabilities and limitations of the two flow measurement technologies are outlined. Average sediment concentration profiles were overestimated by 10% with the ACVP in the dense sheet layer when ⟨φ(z)⟩ ≳ 0.35, and by 100% with the CCP in the more diluted region when ⟨φ(z)⟩ ≲ 0.015 and ⟨φ(z)⟩ ≲ 0.20 for CCP1mm and CCP2mm, respectively. Good agreement is found elsewhere between the three systems in terms of average and time-resolved concentration as well as bed level position and sheet flow layer thickness.

Simone de Beauvoir is one of the philosophers who has most contributed to the transformation of modern societies with her vindication of the freedom of women. This work studies her vision of Nature and differentiates between those aspects of her invaluable legacy for contemporary feminism and those aspects that cause problems in a time of environmental ethics development and the revision of interrelated dualisms of Nature and freedom, body and mind, feelings and reason.

Puleo habla de que en la sociedad capitalista occidental de hoy en día, en la que los medios no dejan de estimular nuestro deseo d consumir y de disfrutar –tanto de objetos materiales como de nuestros cuerpos– y crean la falsa ilusión de que se ha conseguido la libertad absoluta para todo el mundo, tenemos que intentar conservar el espíritu crítico. En esos tiempos de una supuesta libertad sexual, las mujeres todavía tienen que luchar por ser reconocidas como personas. Alicia H. Puleo, que se autodefine como “ecofeminista e ilustrada”, propone que adoptemos una actitud que combina la mesura y la conciencia de una autonomía feminista. En esta entrevista se habla e mujeres y educación, además de los roles de género y la dominación masculina (desde la ciencia) sobre el cuerpo de la mujer. Puleo sugiere que aprovechemos tanto los medios tradicionales como las posibilidades que la nueva tecnología nos ofrece para luchar contra los estereotipos.
