The crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata) population is declining in its range and the situation is not different in Benin. The crested porcupine is the largest rodent in Benin, discreet and little known. It is a species in precarious situation, threatened with extinction because of the pressures (hunting, destruction of the habitats...). His body is covered with long spines (prickles), ringed in white and black. The present study focused on the ecology of the species and the endogenous knowledge of the riparian populations of Benin's protected areas, in particular the Biosphere reserves of Pendjari and W in Benin. The basic principle is the presence of crested porcupine populations in these reserves. The objective of this study is to contribute to the improvement of knowledge on the ecology and the socio-cultural importance of the crested porcupine. Investigations during the study shed light on the parameters used to determine the habitats frequented and the ecological conditions governing the survival of the species,as well as the relationships between the human and crested porcupine populations. The methodological approach adopted is based on the research and analysis of presence indices in the real world and the valorization of the endogenous knowledge of socio-professional groups fishermen, hunters, traditional healers, farmers ...). The methods of guided recce and indirect counting in the wild associated with the results of the surveys used made it possible to study the socio-cultural importance, the threats, the different habitats frequented and the diet of the animals species in the biosphere reserves of Pendjari and W in Benin and their periphery. Preferred habitat and distribution of the crested porcupine wereexamined in the Pendjari and W-Benin reserves. The present study is the first on this species, which combines data of preferential habitat use, threats, socio-economic relations and diet. This study found that the species has a preference for less closed habitats and plant formations on rocky or stony substrates. Tree savannas record 47.62% of observations, saxicolous formations (36.97%), tree savannas (12.13%) and forest galleries (3.28%). The Kruskal-Wallis test indicates a significant difference (p = 0.002). The average encounter rate is 2.85 indices / km. The main threats to the species are poaching, anthropogenic actions or habitat degradation. The ethnozoological significance of the crested porcupine was evaluated. Four forms of use (food, medicinal, commercial and ornamental) are identified. The food form (4.95) is the one for which the value of use diversity is the highest followed by medicinal (3). The most used organs are skin and flesh, pungency and stomach. The diet of the crested porcupine is highly diversified and consists mainly of plants including fruits, seeds, roots, tubers, dye cochlospermum, wild date palm, baobab, shea, etc., and can gnaw the bones in times of scarcity of plants. The study of the interactions between local populations, the environment and crested porcupines is essential for a better understanding of the adaptability of crested porcupines to the disturbances of the habitat and for the evaluation of the specificthreats to the local context. Such studies can help improve the effectiveness and sustainability of conservation actions and the development of local populations., Le porc-épics à crête (Hystrix cristata) est le plus gros des rongeurs du Bénin, discret et peu connu. Il est une espèce en situation précaire, menacée de disparition à cause des pressions (chasse, destruction des habitats,…). La présente étude s’est appesantie sur l’écologie de l’espèce et les connaissances endogènes des populations riveraines des réserves de Biosphère de la Pendjari et du W du Bénin. Le principe de base est la présence des populations de Hystrix cristata dans ces réserves. L’objectif de cette étude est de contribuer à l’amélioration des connaissances sur l’écologie et l’importance sociocu turelle du porc-épic à crête. Les investigations menées pendant l’étude ont permis d’élucider les paramètres permettant de connaître les habitats fréquentés et les conditions écologiques qui régissent la survie de l’espèce ainsi que les relations entre les populations humaines et celles de Hystrix cristata. Les relevés des indices de présence ont été effectués suivant la méthode dite «marche de reconnaissance guidé » (recce guidé) et de comptage indirect en milieu naturel. Egalement des visites systématiques dans les milieux indiqués par les informateurs sont effectuées, de même des tournées nocturnes sont effectuées. Les données sur les pressions, les utilisations et le régimealimentaire et les observations sur le terrain. Les données ethnozoologiques sur l’espèce sont collectées à base des entretiens individuels auprès de 260 personnes constituées de pêcheurs, de chasseurs, de tradipraticiens, d’exploitants agricoles… dans 10 villages riverains. Les résultats des travaux ont permis d’étudier l’importance socioculturelle, les menaces, les différents habitats fréquentés et le régime alimentaire de l’espèce dans les réserves de biosphère de la Pendjari et du W au Bénin et leur périphérie. L’habitat préférentiel et la distribution de Hystrix cristata ont été examinés dans les réserves de la Pendjari et du W-Bénin. La présente étude combine des données sur la sélection de l’habitat, les menaces, les relations socio-économiques et le régime alimentaire. Cette étude a permis de constater que l’espèce a une préférence aux habitats moins fermés et les formations végétales sur des substrats rocheux ou pierreux. Il est constaté que les savanes arbustives concentrent 47,62% des sites d’occurrences contre seulement 3,28 % pour les galeries forestières. Le test de Kruskal-Wallis indique une différence significative (p = 0,002). Le taux de rencontre moyen est de 2,85 indices/km. Les principales menaces pesant sur l’espèce sont le braconnage (96,15%), les actions anthropiques ou dégradation des habitats. L’importance ethnozoologique de Hystrix cristata a été évaluée et quatre formes d’utilisation (alimentaire, médicinale, commerciale et ornementale) sont identifiées. La forme alimentaire (4,95) est celle pour laquelle la valeur de diversité d’utilisation est la plus élevée suivie de celle médicinale (3). Les organes les plus utilisés sont la peau et la chair, le piquant et l’estomac. Son régime alimentaire est très diversifié et constitué essentiellement des fruits, de racines, de tubercules, du dattier sauvage (65,5%), du baobab, de karité de cochlospermum à teinture (76,42%), etc., et il peut ronger les os en période de rareté des plantes. L’étude des interactions existant entre les populations locales, l’environnement et les porcs-épics à crête est indispensable pour une meilleure compréhension des capacités d'adaptation de Hystrix cristata aux perturbations de l’habitat et pour l’évaluation des menaces spécifiques au contexte local. De telles études peuvent contribuer à améliorer l’efficacité et la durabilité des actions de conservation ainsi que le développement des populations riveraines.

Summary 1. In 2001, Loreau and Hector proposed a method to calculate the effect of biodiversity on ecosystem-level properties that distinguished selection effects (SE) from complementarity effects (CE). The approach was designed and has been widely used for the study of yield in mixed-species situations taking into account the relative abundance of each species in ecosystem-level yield. However, complex functional traits commonly used to integrate ecosystem-level properties that cannot be analysed like yield data because the weighted contribution of each species is not determined by its relative abundance. 2. We adapted the original method by clearly identifying ecologically meaningful weighting coefficients to represent species-specific contributions to ecosystem function. 3. We applied the adapted method of analysis to tree foliar carbon isotope composition in an experimental plantation in order to test the influence of species richness on plot water use efficiency (WUEplot). The appropriate weights for the WUEplot of each species are leaf CO2 assimilation rate. 4. We observed a large range of WUEplot and biodiversity effects among plots. The absence of a significant SE on WUEplot indicated that the overall net biodiversity effect was primarily driven by a CE. The net biodiversity effect and CE were mostly negative, suggesting that interspecific interactions resulted in a decrease in the ratio between carbon acquisition and transpiration at the ecosystem level. 5. The application of the method to complex components of ecosystem functioning provides important new insights into the practical and conceptual aspects of functional biodiversity research.
