Listening as a field is relatively new, with little research into the teaching of listening or Jewish conceptualizations of listening. A Canadian Jewish framework for teaching listening can provide pathways towards healing from trauma, amplifying diverse perspectives in the context of multiculturalism, and advancing reconciliation. Furthermore, developing and implementing a Canadian Jewish pedagogy of listening could equip teachers, students, and their communities to better thrive in challenging environments, engage across differences, and feel appreciated. If deployed widely, these approaches have the potential to make a substantial impact beyond the Canadian Jewish community, both nationally and in the field of listening as a whole, at a time of rising disagreement, adversity, and tension.

Abstract This paper has the primary objective of establishing the pragmatic basis for concluding on a present perfect sentence as currently or continuously relevant and the simple past sentence as currently not relevant. This is an attempt to make the concept current relevance as used in relation to present perfect and simple past sentences in Akan determinate for Akan. Three to four formal tests were conducted to reach the following conclusions: The one primary focus or motivation for making a simple past or present perfect sentence in Akan is to indicate the validity/persistence or non-validity/non-persistence of a past event context as at the moment of speech; context is defined here as non-temporal in the form of some evidence of a past event in some space, and/or as temporal such as the period of time within which an event remains/is valid. In summary, in Akan a past event is currently relevant when context(s) of it in focus is/are current (i.e. persists or is valid as at the moment of speech) - present perfect; and currently not relevant when context(s) of it in focus is/are non-current (i.e. not persistent or valid as at the moment of speech) – simple past.

Guided by inoculation theory and studies that examined serious games as a form of intervention to inoculate individuals against fake news, this study tested the impact on college (n = 84) and junior high and secondary school (n = 30) students of a fake news computer game developed in Singapore. The findings were replicated across both samples: Those who played the game subsequently improved in their self-reported scores on perceiving fake news as a threat, skepticism toward information from social media, and being cautious about believing in information they encounter online. We also found that those who played the game scored higher in detecting fake news than those who did not play the game–consistent with the predicted effects of message inoculation.

There is some debate among interpreters of Aquinas as to whether he attributed a doctrine of creation to Plato and Aristotle. Mark Johnson has noted many texts where Aquinas does appear to attribute to Plato and Aristotle an understanding of creation. Yet, an initial glance at Summa Theologiae I.44.2 would suggest he did not. This paper first examines what various interpreters of Aquinas have had to say on the matter. Secondly, it argues that Summa Theologiae I.44.2, taken in context with the proceeding article and De Potentia III.5, need not be read as denying such a doctrine to Plato and Aristotle. Thirdly, this paper concludes that because Plato and Aristotle do not actually possess doctrines of creation, they cannot be the chief sources for Aquinas’ own thought on this matter. Instead, to attribute creation to Plato and Aristotle, Aquinas interprets them through Avicenna. Thus, Avicenna is the chief source for Aquinas’ understanding of creation.

As a key component of a circular economy, remanufacturing is gaining popularity across various sectors. This paper focuses on the wind energy sector, a major player in renewable technologies, which is gradually recognizing its increasing resource-intensive material usage. We present a case study outlining a method for selecting parts from an industrial supply chain partner’s inventory. This strategy is further employed to streamline the manufacturing processes for the chosen part. We utilized the Weighted Sum method, a multi-criteria decision-making strategy, in both instances. We discuss how expertise of process specialists and multi-criteria decision-making techniques could be synthesised for adopting a remanufacturing approach. Data from the commercial partners was collected and any identifying information was stripped. From this, we discovered that the Yaw gear pinion shaft is the top candidate for remanufacturing due to its high commercial value. After comparing various additive manufacturing technologies, Arc Directed Energy Deposition stands out as the best fit for remanufacturing this particular pinion shaft. Although our initial aim was to consider additive manufacturing technologies as solutions for remanufacturing, we show how even conventional manufacturing processes, such as friction welding, could emerge as strong contenders.

Abstract: This study examines the structure and conduct of the Oral production component of WASSCE French examination. The study intends to ascertain the extent to which Oral production assessment examination engenders development of oral competencies among learners of French. Interview data were obtained from students and examiners. The findings show that students lack spontaneity, fluency and understanding of questions. The study confirms that the production component of WASSCE Oral French has an impact on the development of learners’ oral communicative skills. Though the test structure was adequate for assessing the candidates’ oral skills, the results reveal that the examination is conducted under inappropriate conditions namely the possibility of schools having foreknowledge of the paper, overstressing of examiners, insufficient time and examiners for the test administration, subjectivity on the part of the examiners in assessing the candidates and anxiety on the part of the candidates. The study therefore recommends that Oral production examination be introduced from the first year of SHS. The study also recommends the conduct of pre-examination coordination with dummy questions, inclusion of group performance in the test, recruitment of more examiners, extension of the duration of the examination, allotting more marks for orals production tests than the written ones and adoption of methods suitable for teaching orals in the Ghanaian context. Recent technological advancements now allow for copper to be 3D printed, opening the doors for this technology to take a greater part in heat transfer applications. In this study, copper samples were additively manufactured through a print-debind-sinter process and thermally characterised in terms of thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity, and mechanically characterised in terms of Vickers hardness. The microstructure porosity levels appeared to control the thermal properties measured, with the thermal conductivity, while the specific heat was unaffected, while the heat treatment effect caused by the sintering process appeared to control the Vickers hardness measured.

Although Jacques Rancière and Jürgen Habermas share several important commitments, they interpret various core concepts differently, viewing politics, democracy, communication, and disagreement in conflicting ways. Rancière articulates his democratic vision in opposition to important elements of Habermas’s approach. Critics contend that Habermas cannot account for the dynamics of command, exclusion, resistance, and aesthetic transformation involved in Rancière’s understanding of politics. In particular, the prominent roles Habermas affords to communicative rationality and consensus have led people to think that he cannot grasp the radical forms of political disagreement Rancière describes. While some have viewed Rancière as offering a trenchant challenge to Habermas, I will contend that Rancière’s critique is less compelling than some have thought. Habermasian understandings of third personal speech and aesthetic expression are nuanced and adaptable enough to evade Rancière’s criticisms. I conclude by suggesting that Habermasian theorists have also developed crucial forms of social and political critique that Rancière’s theory systematically excludes.

The Southern Hudson Bay polar bear (Ursus maritimus Phipps, 1774) subpopulation is considered stable, but conflicting evidence lends uncertainty to that designation. Capture–recapture studies conducted in 1984–1986 and 2003–2005 and an aerial survey conducted in 2011/2012 suggested that abundance was likely unchanged since the mid-1980s. However, body condition and body size declined since then, and duration of sea ice decreased by about 30 days. Due to the conflicting information on subpopulation status and ongoing changes in sea ice, we conducted another aerial survey in 2016 to determine whether abundance had changed. We collected data via mark–recapture distance sampling and double-observer protocols. Results suggest that abundance declined 17% from 943 bears (95% CI: 658–1350) in 2011/2012 to 780 (95% CI: 590–1029) in 2016. The proportion of yearlings declined from 12% of the population in 2011 to 5% in 2016, whereas the proportion of cubs remained similar (16% in 2011 vs. 19% in 2016) suggesting low survival of the 2015 cohort. In a warming Arctic, duration of sea ice is predicted to continue to decline in Hudson Bay affecting all ice-dependent wildlife; therefore, further monitoring of this subpopulation is warranted. We recommend a conservative approach to harvest management and repeating the aerial survey in 2021.

Appropriation, gentrification, and colonisation originated as precise technical terms. This study analyses examples of each word in recent mainstream online news texts, and demonstrates that all three have undergone semantic change, particularly metaphorisation and generalisation (cf. Geeraerts [2010: 26]). Language users tend to select and emphasise shared semantic features of each, to the exclusion of other semantic features, such that the terms are in some circumstances, for many language users, interchangeable. I provide factual evidence (cf. Wallis [2019]) or attestations (cf. Zgusta [1971]) of these terms’ newly emerging semantic relationships, and I present evidence for decolonisation as a preferred contradictory antonym to all three (cf. Murphy [2010]). I analyse examples in which language users actively and critically employ these terms alongside each other, defining or negotiating meanings of each; and I explore possibilities for alternation in some shared attested syntagmatic combinations, such as the appropriation, gentrification, or (de)colonisation of history. I discuss mechanisms of change, with reference to the philological tradition (Sperber [1923], [1938]; Nerlich [1992]), structuralism (Ullmann [1963]), and cognitive semantics (Blank [1999]), and propose a process whereby affective charge motivates semantic generalisation in precise technical vocabulary when it begins to be used in contentious, fraught public debate.

El conocimiento, la valoración y el aprecio del entorno donde se desarrolla el individuo fomentan el sentido de pertenencia. El presente estudio es un primer acercamiento para conocer la percepción ambiental del alumnado de educación secundaria en dos localidades costeras de Tamiahua, Veracruz, México, respecto al Sistema Arrecifal Lobos-Tuxpan (SALT). Para ello, se realizó un análisis curricular de las asignaturas de Biología y Geografía del plan de estudios 2011. De este análisis se construyeron tres instrumentos (cuestionario cerrado, frases inacabadas y cuestionario abierto) para indagar sobre el conocimiento ambiental, los valores ambientales y el sentido de pertenencia respectivamente. Los resultados revelan que los contenidos y aprendizajes esperados para las dos asignaturas no logran ser contextualizados con el Sistema Arrecifal Lobos-Tuxpan (SALT). La prueba de Chi-cuadrada reveló que la proximidad con el SALT no denota una diferencia significativa en cuanto al conocimiento ambiental. Se manifiesta un desconocimiento particularmente de los servicios ambientales que brinda este ecosistema. De los siete valores ambientales declarados, la empatía fue el mejor representado para ambos centros escolares. En relación al sentido de pertenencia, los estudiantes reconocen que su vida y su comunidad guardan una relación con el SALT. Se evidencia la necesidad de que los estudiantes reciban un reforzamiento pedagógico en ambas asignaturas con un enfoque local. Este estudio puede ser considerado por las autoridades ambientales encargadas del manejo del SALT para proponer estrategias de Educación para la Sustentabilidad.

Cancer patients are at increased risk of developing severe and even lethal form of Sars-CoV-2 infection. In the current health crisis, rapid treatment, but adapted to the epidemiological context, must be offered to them. In Morocco and more particularly at the Regional Oncology Center of Agadir, a working group has met to put forward proposals on the management of cancer patients during this crisis. The current epidemiological situation in Morocco and precisely in the South is still under control, therefore management should not make cancer patients lose their chances of cure. We suggest that the possibilities of seeking care be safeguarded while adapting treatments to the epidemic context and government prerogatives.

Cervical cancer may be fatal to women if not identified and treated early. The importance of organised cervical screening has been felt in many developed countries. However, the majority of women in developing countries may be under-screened or may have never been screened because many developing countries have not developed a national cervical cancer prevention program accessible to all women due to reasons such as competing funding priorities, low prioritization of cervical cancer and cultural practices across Africa. It is important that these factors are adequately addressed to improve access to regular cervical screening services and ultimately help curb the incidence and impact of cervical cancer on women in sub-Saharan Africa.

Background: Physicians often avoid discussing patients’ religious and spiritual concerns, even though most patients (i.e., 50-94%) want integrated care. To address this gap, medical students interviewed a Standardized Patient (SP) who was upset because the daughter did not confront her fiancée about converting to Orthodox Judaism. Students reflected on how their own religion and spirituality affected engaging with their patient. Methods: With a 97% response rate, 231 first-year medical students responded to open-ended questions about their patient encounter. For this quantitative content analysis, we used inductive reasoning, identifying three themes: (1) impact of students’ own religion on their comfort, (2) change in comfort, and (3) their learning. We used deductive reasoning to compare qualitative results from half of the students who began the curriculum with a questionnaire about their own spirituality with the other students completing afterwards. Results: Most students said being religious positively influenced their comfort, whether they were also Orthodox Jewish or from a different religion. Among uncomfortable students (6.5%), some attributed this to not being religious. Some students (4.8%) grew more comfortable discussing the religious issue, and 18.2% became uncomfortable due to lacking knowledge of Orthodox Judaism and the awkwardness of the topic. This research compares the production of hay in three historical European agroecological systems: in northern Romania, central Sweden and eastern central France. We analyse hay production in relation to the entire production system, the local natural conditions, and the variety of ways by which hay production was transformed over time. We found broad commonalities, but also discovered significant differences in each of three historical trajectories. Introduction of fodder crops, crop rotations and mechanization are important drivers of changes in all three areas, although the timing, sequence and causation vary from place to place. There are significant differences in the organization of farm labour, in the role of beef and dairy production, the role of political reforms and the climatic constraints of outdoor grazing which affected the transformation of fodder production. This paper highlights the potential of an integrated, interdisciplinary approach for better understanding the complex interaction of people, their social and economic contexts, and their environment.

INTRODUCTION: In Ghana, there is no data regarding physical activity habits and lipid profiles of students. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between physical activities, Body Mass Index (BMI) and lipid profile of students in Ghana. METHODS: Cluster and systematic sampling techniques were employed to recruit 120 students, aged 18 years and above. This cross-sectional study was carried out among students from the University of Ghana. Biochemical analysis was conducted analysing total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglycerides (TG) in serum samples. Anthropometry measurements were also taken and BMI calculated. The physical activities, undertaken over a 7-day period, by the students were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). RESULTS: 31.7% and 21.7% of the students were overweight and obese respectively. 61.5% of the obese students were engaged in high level physical activity as compared to 45.5% and 36.8% of the normal and overweight students, respectively. Normal weight students and overweight students showed significant differences in means of TC; [(4.56 , 0.930 mmol/L) and (5.06 , 0.93 mmol/L), respectively] and also between normal weight group (4.54 , 0.93 mmol/L) and the obese students (5.24 , 1.18 mmol/L). Significant correlations were also observed between TG, TC and BMI; and TC and TG, HDL and a strong correlation between LDL and TC (r=0.967). CONCLUSION: Strong correlations between BMI, physical activity and lipid profile indices among students in Ghana. Comprehensive efforts should be applied to reduce the incidence of CVDs among students.

INTRODUCTION: Brachial plexus birth (BPB) injury is one of the challenges associated with maternal delivery, with varying prevalence between countries. BPB injury poses negative health implications to children and also has socio-economic implications on families and the community as a whole. To treat BPB injury, a multi-disciplinary treatment approach is recommended. Brachial plexus birth palsy (BPBP) is categorised into two-upper plexus injury (Erb's palsy) and lower plexus injury (Klumpke's palsy). These categories present with various degrees of injuries, with less severe injuries responding well to treatment and in most instances may resolve on their own, but serious and complicated injuries will require a multi-disciplinary treatment approach to treat and/or manage. Effective treatment and management depends on adequate knowledge of the disease condition. These include the risk factors and prevalence of BPBP within a particular population at a specific period in time. The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors and the prevalence of a hospital based BPBP within a five-year period (2013-2017).

The hot water circulation system in a building is a system which helps prevent Legionella problems whilst ensuring that tenants have access to hot water quickly. Poorly designed or implemented systems not only increase the risk to people’s health and thermal comfort, but even result in an increase in the energy needed for this system to function properly. Results from previous studies showed that the total hot water circulation system loss can be as high as 25 kWh/m2 heated floor area per year. The purpose of this project is to measure the total energy use per year of the hot water circulation system in about 200 multifamily dwellings of different ages to verify that a system loss of 4 kWh/m2, year is a realistic assumption for both newer and older/retrofitted buildings. The preliminary results from the first 134 measurements showed that the assumption of 4 kWh/m2, year is rarely fulfilled. An average energy use of more than three times this is more common, even in newer buildings. Whilst some of the total energy lost is used to heat the buildings, it is not desirable because it is an uncontrolled energy flow.

INTRODUCTION: Studies on urinary tract infections (UTIs) in West Africa from 1990 to 2012 have showed moderate to high antimicrobial resistance to commonly prescribed antibiotics. Fluoroquinolones have been the main stay in the management of UTIs, but recent reports show emergence of resistance. Levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin still remain the commonest fluoroquinolones prescribed for UTIs in many settings. objective: this study sought to compare activity of ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin against clinical isolates obtained from patients with suspected UTI at the Ghana Police Hospital.

The African region may be reaching a tipping point for a major health crisis. Over the last few decades for example, there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of obesity and associated comorbidities. This alarming trend is attributed to the rapid urbanization, increase in income, and unhealthy lifestyles among many others. Most importantly, managing and treating non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is expensive and proving to be beyond the reach of ordinary Africans. Interestingly, Africa has not fully eradicated undernutrition particularly micronutrient malnutrition especially among women and children. Additionally, HIV/AIDs, malaria, diarrheal diseases and other preventable infectious diseases continue to pose serious threat to the health of the populace. The management of NCDs is challenging and costly as most healthcare systems on the continent are largely built for the provision of curative care for communicable diseases. This article proposes the institution of nutrition and health surveys in individual countries to monitor trends. We believe this approach, in addition to addressing lifestyle and behavioral factors, may be effective in curbing the rising phenomenon of obesity and NCDs.

Based on the specific case of the TLDN .brussels, this article proposes an empirical study of how the opening up of the top-level domain name market actually impacts registration practices. By making use of freely available software tools such as OpenRefine and Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods, the entire corpus of the .brussels domain names (6 300) was analysed from a quantitative perspective. Based on a statistically representative sample (592 domain names), a qualitative interpretation allowed a more fine-grained analysis of how the new TLDN is being used in practice. By doing so, the article gives detailed insight into the impact of the recent changes to the rules concerning domain name registration. Through this analysis, researchers, policy makers, investors and anyone concerned about the identity of Brussels in the digital realm may have a better understanding of the state of play of the .brussels TLDN.

INTRODUCTION: symptoms of sepsis are non-specific among neonates and diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion. The study sought to evaluate the utility of procalcitonin (PCT) versus C-reactive protein (CRP) in diagnosing early-onset neonatal sepsis. METHODS: this was a cross-sectional study in which neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit, with signs suggesting sepsis were categorized according to an adapted criteria from Tollner's sepsis score and case definition of bloodstream infection as: ''highly probable'', ''probable'' and ''less probable''. Laboratory investigations including blood culture, complete blood count, PCT and CRP levels were done before first antimicrobial drug administration. RESULTS: a total of 62 neonates less than 12 hours postnatal age (0.16-9.82 hours) were recruited. Proportion of neonates with PCT=2 ng/mL was 91% (20/22) in the ''highly probable'' group compared to 31.6% (6/19) in the ''probable group'' (p=0.001). Neonates with CRP=5 mg/L was 54.4% (12/22) in the ''highly probable'' group compared to 26.3% (5/19) in the ''probable group'' (p = 0.07). The receiver operator characteristics for PCT and CRP were; sensitivity (87.5% vrs 50%), specificity (63.0% vrs 72.2%), positive predictive value (44.1% vrs 37.5%) and negative predictive value (93.8% vrs 81.3%), respectively. CONCLUSION: PCT was a better predictive marker for neonatal sepsis within the first 12 hours of life than CRP in this setting, however, its low specificity relative to CRP suggests that neonates without patent infection are more likely to be incorrectly diagnosed with sepsis using this test.

Present study investigates three dimensional rotating flow of Casson fluid in the presence of magnetic field over a convectively heated linear stretching sheet. Concept of nonlinear radiative heat transfer is considered. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations are converted into ordinary differential equations with the help of similarity transformation and then solved by using shooting method along with Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg integration technique. The primary and secondary velocities and temperature profiles are plotted and analysed corresponding to various pertinent flow parameters. Also, the skin friction for both directions and rate of heat transfer at the surface are computed and explained.

INTRODUCTION: reports of increasing resistance of uropathogens to antimicrobials is of global concern. Culture and drug susceptibility tests remain a vital guide to effective therapy. The aim of this study was to determine the susceptibility pattern of isolated uropathogens to ciprofloxacin at the Ghana Police Hospital. METHODS: a total of 705 mid-stream urine samples were collected from patients suspected of having urinary tract infection, and who visited the Ghana Police Hospital's laboratory from December 2013 to March 2014. Samples were cultured and isolates identified by standard methods, after which isolates susceptibility to ciprofloxacin was determined. RESULTS: prevalence of urinary tract infection among patients' whose samples were analyzed was 15.9%. Predominant uropathogens isolated were E .coli (46.4%), Coliform (41.1%) and Coliform spp. with Candida (6.2%). Other isolates were Pseudomonas spp. (2.7%), Salmonella spp. (1.8%), Candida spp. (0.9%) and Klebsiella spp (0.9%). The overall resistance among the top three isolated uropathogens to ciprofloxacin was 35.9%. Resistance pattern demonstrated by respective isolates to ciprofloxacin were: E. coli (38.5%), Coliform (54.3%), and Coliform spp. with Candida (15%). The other isolates showed 100% sensitivity. CONCLUSION: this study revealed a relatively high ciprofloxacin resistance among isolated uropathogens, hence, the need for prudent prescribing and use of ciprofloxacin in urinary tract infection management.

INTRODUCTION: epilepsy is common in sub-Saharan Africa, but there is little data in West Africa, to develop public health measures for epilepsy in this region. METHODS: we conducted a three-stage cross-sectional survey to determine the prevalence and risk factors for active convulsive epilepsy (ACE), and estimated the treatment gap in Kintampo situated in the middle of Ghana. RESULTS: 249 people with ACE were identified in a study population of 113,796 individuals. After adjusting for attrition and the sensitivity of the screening method, the prevalence of ACE was 10.1/1000 (95% Confidence Interval (95%CI) 9.5-10.7). In children aged18 years, risk factors for ACE were: family history of seizures (OR=3.31; 95%CI: 1.83-5.96), abnormal delivery (OR=2.99; 95%CI: 1.07-8.34), problems after birth (OR=3.51; 95%CI: 1.02-12.06), and exposure to Onchocerca volvulus (OR=2.32; 95%CI: 1.12-4.78). In adults, a family history of seizures (OR=1.83; 95%CI: 1.05-3.20), never attended school (OR=11.68; 95%CI: 4.80-28.40), cassava consumption (OR=3.92; 95%CI: 1.14-13.54), pork consumption (OR=1.68; 95%CI: 1.09-2.58), history of snoring at least 3 nights per week (OR=3.40: 95%CI: 1.56-7.41), exposure to Toxoplasma gondii (OR=1.99; 95%CI: 1.15-3.45) and Onchocerca volvulus (OR=2.09: 95%CI: 1.29-3.40) were significant risk factors for the development of ACE. The self-reported treatment gap was 86.9% (95%CI: 83.5%-90.3%). CONCLUSION: ACE is common within the middle belt of Ghana and could be reduced with improved obstetric care and prevention of parasite infestations such as Onchocerca volvulus and Toxoplasma gondii.
