Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been successful for ten years. This article aims to explore the reasons of such success, using original means. The way the J-PAL (which the main laboratory in the field) works explains the spread of the method. I made a database of J-PAL affiliated to show how their studies and their professional positions in universities could be an explanation of the RCTs success. The legitimacy of the method comes partly from the fact that the affiliated hold, for most of them, PhD from prestigious universities and work in Ivy League universities.

Is Walter Benjamin a sociographer of collective memory ? A comparison between the morphological, phenomenological and political topics of Halbwach’s sociology of memory and Benjamin’s writing on Paris allows us to answer this question. Morphological: it is mainly a question of seeing how collective memory can crystallize in its urban setting. Phenomenological: the process of recollection supposes an encounter between a temporal pluralism and collective representations in images from which that urban space is not disconnected. Political: a type of recollection must be put to use by this image for the progress of civilization, especially against Fascism. At the end of this process, the role of the meta-theory appears decisive for the theory, showing up the major difference between our two authors that the epistemological struggle had brought closer. For if collective memory is reified in the city, this happens according to a singular representation of time from which it itself arises. However it is precisely in the name of a representation of time that the French sociologist and the German philosopher wanted to found, science on the one hand, action on the other.

In the present paper the author aims at demonstrating that the Romanian Social Institute of Bucharest was not the sole institutional framework for the social research carried out in interwar Romania. Side by side with the respective Institute (and those which were organizationally and/or methodologically affiliated to it) the history of Romanian sociology also recorded among others the sociographic activity of the researchers gathered around the journal “Societatea de mâine” [Tomorrow’s Society] led by I. Clopoţel. In order to evaluate the activity of the group, the author discusses two issues: 1) to what extent the activity of the sociographic group from Cluj can be evaluated in terms of a scientific movement proper? 2) what is the relationship between the sociography promoted by the researchers from Cluj and sociology, to be more specific monographic sociology? Emphasizing the fact that the survey was the basis of social theory and practice, I. Clopoţel attempted at gathering all potential research forces throughout the country around the journal “Societatea de mâine” and initiating systematic social researches. Methodologically speaking, the researchers from Cluj elaborated common working tools with the view to developing a unitary research and collecting scientifically relevant data. According to the group, sociolography was not an autonomous discipline, but rather a “science” complementary to sociology or, to be more specific, a first and mandatory stage of sociological knowledge, the stage of collecting the data required by any theoretical construct. In agreement to this opinion, sociographic research should be subordinated to sociology, namely to monographic sociology and adopt the latter’s concerns and research methodology. Nevertheless, I. Clopoţel suggested and practiced another approach to social reality. He did not participate in the activity of monographing social units, which sketched a rather static picture of the village despite its systematic character, but aimed at capturing the dynamics of the rural area. His thematic choices and the researches resulted from their implementation in social research practice enriched the “classic” sociographic model with a new meaning, namely the definition, and examination of, and finding a solution to social issues. All in all, according to the researchers around the journal “Societatea de mâine” sociography was more than a mere antechamber of sociology, it was an autonomous discipline between sociology and politics. Sociographical research has concentrated for a long time on Sunday Mass attendance. Without decrying the value to religious sociology of these many enquiries, one cannot but agree that qualitative research would be of great interest. The Center for Socio-Religious Studies, Lille, therefore set out in 1962 to study the problem of the significance of the Mass. The aim is to enquire into the different degrees possible in participation in the Mass, the meaning attributed to it by the faithful, and the motives which induce them to practise. The author sums up the experience of two years of groping, of trials and set-backs, due mainly to methodological difficulties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
