2. Direct Laser Additive Manufacturing of TiAl Intermetallic Compound by Powder Directed Energy Deposition (DED)

Abstract

Directed Energy Deposition of the commercial intermetallic Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb alloy was investigated. The CLAD® process is dependent on multiple parameters, which were successfully optimised through several experiments, including series of beads, small blocks, and massive blocks, under argon atmosphere. The use of adapted temperature management leads to massive blocks manufacturing that bear no apparent macroscopic defects, such as cracks, which are generally observed in this brittle material due to strong temperature cycling during the manufacturing. The microstructure and geometrical parameters were characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This process generates an ultra-fine and anisotropic microstructure, which is restored to a homogeneous duplex microstructure by a subsequent heat-treatment. Mechanical characterisation is in progress and will be used to validate the soundness of the materials produced in these conditions.

Abstract

Titanium alloy powders, mostly the Ti-64 alloy with composition Ti-6Al-4V (wt.%), are extensively used for biomedical and high-demanding applications, e.g. in aeronautics. Advanced powder metallurgy processes like additive manufacturing are strong drivers for the production of high quality powders, insuring a good rheological behavior, a low porosity level in the parts and an adequate roughness. Ideally, fine spherical particles with no volume and surface defects are aimed at. Inert gas atomization is a process that is able to produce clean powders for such applications, especially for AM. To avoid the chemical reaction of titanium with the commonly used alumina crucibles, a crucible-free configuration has been designed in the EIGA process (Electrode induction melting Inert Gas Atomization). Two EIGA facilities are currently available in France for R&D purposes: a one-liter (nominal rod diameter/length (mm): 50/500) labscale facility at ONERA and an eight-liter capacity (100/1000) industrial-scale facility at the MetaFensch Institute. Using the smaller facility to screen and optimize atomization parameters and transfer them to the bigger facility is a tempting approach. This communication will show the characteristics of Ti-64 powders produced in both facilities, in terms of particle shape, particle size distribution, presence of satellites and porous particles.

Abstract

International audience; On-going excavations in the lower rock-shelter of « Le Moustier Rock-shelter / The Vézère Valley » geomorphological system. The deposits are the result of alternating sedimentary phases. One of them is dominated by runoff associated to weak to moderate rockfall processes and a more or less active bioturbation. The other corresponds to brief flooding episodes of the Vézère River, which substantially impacted sedimentogenesis as well as the organization and distribution of archaeological remains. A revaluation of previously available data reveals that these processes were probably responsible for the deposition of the entire upper part of this sedimentary series (i.e. Peyrony’s levels G to K). The overall Le Moustier stratigraphic series (levels A to K) forms a sequence reflecting a progressive evolution of the sedimentary environment. It comprises at the base stream channel deposits (levels A to D of Peyrony), then flood plain deposits (levels E and F) and, finally, deposits primarily due to subaerial processes (levels G to K). Available dates place levels G to K in OIS 3 whereas the still undated levels A to F were likely deposited towards the end of the Last Interglacial (OIS 5a ?). Based on these new data, we propose a model for the evolution of the geomorphological system « Le Moustier Rock-shelter / The Vézère Valley ». ABSTRACT; Les nouvelles fouilles entreprises depuis 2014 dans l'abri inférieur du Moustier ont permis d'accéder à une partie des dépôts du remplissage et d'en établir la lithostratigraphie. Organisés en petites séquences successives, ils résultent d'une alte-nance de phases sédimentaires. Les unes sont dominées par le ruissellement associé à une éboulisation faible à modérée ainsi qu'à une bioturbation plus ou moins active. Les autres correspondent à de brefs épisodes d'inondation de la Vézère qui, néanmoins, ont eu un impact notable sur la sédimentogenèse et, sans doute, sur l'organisation ainsi que sur la distribution des vestiges archéologiques. Un réexamen des données recueillies par nos prédécesseurs permet de penser que ces processus de formation s'appliquent probablement à toute la partie supérieure du remplissage (i.e. couches G à K de Peyrony). Considérant la totalité de la série stratigraphique, on constate qu'elle constitue une séquence témoignant de l'évolution du milieu de sédimentation d'un pôle exclusivement fluviatile vers un pôle où les processus fluviatiles n'interviennent plus qu'épisodiquement. Elle comprend en effet à la base des dépôts générés dans un chenal d'écoulement (couches A à D de Peyrony), puis des dépôts de débordement mis en place dans une plaine d'inondation (couche E et F) et, enfin, des dépôts principalement liés à des phénomènes subaériens (couches G à K). Les dates actuellement disponibles placent les couches G à K au sein du SIO 3, tandis que les couches A à F pourraient s'être mises en place vers la fin du Dernier Interglaciaire (SIO 5a?). Un essai de reconstitution de l'évolution du système géomorphologique «abri du Moustier / vallée de la Vézère» est également proposé.

7. Monitoring gears by vibration measurements: Lempel-Ziv complexity and Approximate Entropy as diagnostic tools

Abstract

Unexpected failures of industrial gearboxes may cause significant economic losses. It is therefore important to detect early fault symptoms. This paper introduces signal processing methods based on approximate entropy (ApEn) and Lempel-Ziv Complexity (LZC) for defect detection of gears. Both methods are statistical measurements exploring the regularity of a vibratory signal. Applied to gear signals, the parameter selection of ApEn and LZC calculation are first numerically investigated, and appropriate parameters are suggested. Finally, an experimental study is presented to investigate the effectiveness of these indicators. The results demonstrate that ApEn and LZC provide alternative features for signal processing. A new methodology is presented combining both Kurtosis and LZC for early detection of faults. The results show that this proposed method may be used as an effective tool for early detection of gear faults.

Abstract

To detect rolling element bearing defects, many researches have been focused on Motor Current Signal Analysis (MCSA) using spectral analysis and wavelet transform. This paper presents a new approach for rolling element bearings diagnosis without slip estimation, based on the wavelet packet decomposition (WPD) and the Hilbert transform. Specifically, the Hilbert transform first extracts the envelope of the motor current signal, which contains bearings fault-related frequency information. Subsequently, the envelope signal is adaptively decomposed into a number of frequency bands by the WPD algorithm. Two criteria based on the energy and correlation analyses have been investigated to automate the frequency band selection. Experimental studies have confirmed that the proposed approach is effective in diagnosing rolling element bearing faults for improved induction motor condition monitoring and damage assessment.

9. Spectrum construction for non stationary vibration: Application to a moving flexible robot

Abstract

This paper presents a method for constructing spectrum in non-stationary vibration using time series vector autoregressive model. A modal classification criterion and a modal amplification factor are introduced based on the eigen-decomposition of the block data matrix. The classical spectrum computation can be therefore modified to amplify only the physical modes and lighten the computation induced modes. In combination with a sliding window technique, it is shown that the method provides a clear, lightweight spectral representation of non stationary vibration. Application on the vibration signals measured from a moving flexible robot along a given trajectory shows the effectiveness and applicability of the method. The technique is integrated in the online modal surveillance software call STAR (Short Time AutoRegressive).

Abstract

Les recherches sur le Paléolithique moyen récent du versant nord des Pyrénées bénéficient depuis plusieurs années du dynamisme des fouilles de la grotte du Noisetier (Fréchet-Aure, Hautes-Pyrénées). Celle-ci a livré des ensembles lithiques essentiellement réalisés aux dépens de matériaux locaux, complétés par des apports en silex. Des échantillonnages réalisés en différents points des formations alluviales de la Neste et d’affluents ont été comparés avec le matériel archéologique et mettent en évidence un haut degré de sélection dans l’environnement local, témoignage de connaissances fines du milieu montagnard. L’étude pétroarchéologique des silex permet de dessiner un vaste territoire connu ou parcouru. Les études en cours à la grotte Gatzarria (Ossas-Suhare, Pyrénées-Atlantiques) permettent également d’envisager de nouveaux parcours transpyrénéens. For several years, Late Middle Paleolithic research on the Northern side of the Pyrenees has benefited from the dynamism of Le Noisetier Cave excavations (Fréchet-Aure, Hautes-Pyrénées). There, the lithic component is essentially made of local raw materials, completed by imported flint. Samples taken at different points of the alluvial formations of the Neste River and tributaries were compared with artifacts and highlight a high degree of selection in the local environment, evidence of fine knowledge of the mountain context. The petroarcheological study of flint also demonstrates a vast known or traveled territory. Ongoing studies at Gatzarria cave (Ossas-Suhare, Pyrénées-Atlantiques) also allow considering new trans-Pyrenean contacts.

Abstract

Only recently, vertebroplasty (VP) and kyphoplasty (KP) were introduced in the treatment of lesions of the vertebral body (VB). Most frequently, osteoporotic fractures (VP, KP) and metastases (VP) are treated in highly selected patients. These methods consist of polymethylmethacrylat (PMMA) injection into the VB usually through transpedicular canulas. In KP a coaxial balloon creates a cavity within the vertebral body, thus restoring some of the original VB height before cement injection. Consistently, these methods result in favourable outcomes. However, because of possible cement leakage and subsequent neurocompression with permanent damage, we advocate our surgical approach with prophylactic interlaminar fenestration prior to VP.

La différence alsacienne ne se limite pas au statut concordataire qui permet, par exemple, au clergé des religions juive, protestante et catholique d'être rémunéré par l'État, au statut particulier de certaines professions (coiffeurs, notaires, etc.), à une circulation des chemins de fer sur la voie de droite, ou à un taux de remboursement des caisses d'assurance maladie supérieur au reste de la France (sans d'ailleurs que cela crée un déficit supplémentaire !), l'Alsace a aussi un statut de chasse très particulier qu'elle partage depuis plus d'un siècle avec la Moselle.
