Trauma to the lips is the most common type of facial injury. The prominence of the lips and the close correlation with the teeth, make it a vulnerable aesthetic unit. We here report the case of a 20-year-old student presenting two hours after maxillofacial trauma following a traffic accident involving a head-on collision between two motorcyclists. The student had fallen on the handlebars of his motorbike injuring his upper lip. Maxillofacial examination showed involvement of the nasogenial sulcus with elevation of the right nasal wing, a notch in the right upper hemi-lip, well colored, and whose endo-buccal extension was embedded in the vestibule, giving an appearance of "right unilateral cleft lip". Radiological evaluation showed air-fluid levels with solution of continuity of the medial wall of the right maxillary sinus. The diagnosis of traumatic incarceration of the right upper hemi-lip with no displaced fracture of the right maxilla was retained. This can cause unilateral or incomplete right upper cleft lip, or a wound with loss of substance involving the right upper hemi-lip. It is a very uncommon lesion of the upper lip requiring urgent repair, given the risk of ischemia and labial necrosis. The patient was operated under locoregional anesthesia. The right upper hemi-lip was embedded with incarceration due to nondisplaced fracture at the level of the nasal notch. Disincarceration was performed, resulting in minimal labial loss with a vestibular detachment, repaired by direct suture. The patient's outcome was good. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma represents about 5% of all salivary gland tumors, in which, about one-third occurs in the minor salivary gland. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the third most frequently encountered minor salivary gland tumor, preceded only by a mixed tumor and adenoid cystic carcinoma. The affected minor salivary glands are most frequently located in the palate, followed by the lower lip. Tumors of the minor salivary glands occur predominantly in women in the fourth to fifth decades of life. The tumors are characterized by endophytic growth and often present a slowly progressive course, which delays the diagnosis. We report a 42-year-old woman, who consulted for a painless mass with a diameter of 3x2, 5 cm on the internal aspect of the upper lip. The mass had appeared 3 years earlier. The lesion was lobulated, of elastic consistency, and covered by a normal mucosa. Its growth had been slowly progressive. There were no palpable locoregional lymph nodes. As the swelling was progressively increasing in size, surgical excision of the swelling was planned. The mass was removed under general anesthesia and sent to the Pathology Department for histopathological examination. Low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma was diagnosed. Although malignant minor salivary gland tumors are rare in the lip, they must be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis. As the prognosis of low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma is excellent after wide local resection, although rare, the possibility of mucoepidermoid carcinoma should be always be considered while dealing with any lip mass.

The logic of lip repair derives from the morphologic and structural specificity of this region. We review various techniques of upper lip reconstruction with special focus on cheek advancement. This simple and reliable procedure fullfils the criteria for satisfactory repair of the lateral unit of the upper lip. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Midline upper-lip fistulas are an extremely rare variant of congenital facial malformations. Less than 30 cases have been reported in the literature since 1970. We report the case of a 2 and a half-year-old girl presenting with a median congenital blind fistula of the upper lip, without any relation with the oral cavity. A recurrent swelling of the upper lip was the main symptom.
