The duende, in flamenco, is often akin to an experience of intensity capable of inducing not only aesthetic but also existential changes in the person who experiences it. For this reason, it is sometimes linked to psychic phenomena which are just as remarkable for their intensity but which occur in other contexts. We will study here the validity of a comparison between the duende and certain so-called moments of "revelation" in psychotherapy, from a dialogue with the psychiatrist Juliette Allain's paper « Approche du sens du geste en psychothérapie à travers l'expérience du duende ».

The ambiguity cultivated on Instagram in the relationship between a pop singer-songwriter and her closest circle of fans is the subject of this article. I analyse their private and public interactions and their modes of self-exposure, particularly the idol’s affective ones which suppose a need for fans’ commitment in the promotion of her artistic project. I assume that ambiguity, which is self-referential in this case study, is the pillar of the construction of the artist’s authenticity. The suspension produced by ambiguity allows the parties to agree in short-lived, direct and perceived forms of emotional intimacy. Ambiguity plays a key role at a collective level, because it both protects and promises reserved access to the truth. The acceptance of ambiguity and authenticity as given determines the success of the said « connection » between artist and fan. Fans thus participate in the artist’s public performance and benefit from her mentorship.

This paper contributes to the ongoing discussion about the use of virtual exchange for the teaching and learning of languages. The project was designed as a Spanish language conversation exchange that connected students via synchronous Zoom sessions. Following a pilot semester that took place in spring 2019, the exchange was then repeated with a new group of students during the spring 2020 term, the same semester during which the COVID-19 pandemic spread throughout the world. The exchange took place over a two-week period and pairs were formed between students enrolled in a graduate level pre-service Spanish language program in Spain and undergraduate intermediate Spanish students in the US. Groups were asked to complete five topic-based conversation sessions. Individual exchange sessions were recorded and transcribed. Exchange participants also completed a survey about their experiences. Findings from the recorded sessions, transcript analysis, and surveys show that the virtual conversation exchange was successful and that difficulties such as technology and scheduling, both recurring issues that have been noted in previous studies of telecollaboration (Helm, 2015), were not significant barriers. Because the virtual exchange took place during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the primary focus of this study was to examine how students utilized the exchange as a way to stay connected during a time of mass disconnection.

Its objective is to provide answers to the following two questions: (a) how is the resumptive anaphora triggered in the three configurations mentioned above?; (b) do the intermediate resumptive sequences generate a simple juxtaposition, a connective or even a subordinate relation between the two predications? The answers to these two questions will enable us to assess the relationship between the resumptive function of these intermediate sequences and their value as a connective device linking two predications. In this way this study aims to contribute to the exploration of the relationship between anaphora and syndetic links.

Either a bridge or a door, a sea or a wall, the representations aim at grasping the Mediterranean under the sign of binarity. Never has a sea aroused so much interest as this Middle Sea. Oscillating between several representations that drain a multitude of concepts, the Mediterranean crystallizes the major oppositions of current societies. Brought on to the big screen, or being the object of the intellectual analysis of authors, the Mediterranean leads one to interrogation and invites to the reflection on life, on the relations between the carriers of the cultures of the two banks and on the future of humanity. This study proposes to analyze the filmic and literary staging of the Mediterranean as a space where binarity is exercised.

On Science and Philosophy Connection Science and philosophy sometimes fail to dialogue. This essay sheds some light on this controversial issue by considering some historical instances of their complicated relationship, since the mid-nineteenth century. We will examine intellectual trends, training processes, and most of all, the increasing knowledge we are nowadays witnessing. As the last years suggest, these difficulties are not insurmountable, if only the connection between science and philosophy is taken into consideration. This connection deals not only with their common origin, but also with the process, they are always implicated in, of continuous reborn and reciprocal regeneration. This perspective suggests us to individuate new professional figures standing on the frontier between science and philosophy. These figures appear to be indispensable to construe a new koiné and thereby preserve a community which is devoted to knowledge and pure science.

This article is a positional paper and an ontological contribution to the modelling of socio-ecosystems (SES). It is also an epistemic position that is anchored on the object-oriented approach. We thus propose a model of knowledge organisation that allows more complexity to be integrated into the multidisciplinary deconstruction and analysis of SES. This object-oriented ontological proposal is based on six concepts of high abstraction level allowing a transdisciplinary portability around the structures, functions, connections, phases, scales and adaptations of SES. After defining our position on object-oriented spatiotemporal modelling, we present the six concepts and explain the interest of a top level, object-oriented, ontology for SES to conclude on the perspectives of knowledge organisation that extends our proposal.

This article examines what is taking place in the forty-two sonnets of the Sketches from the Sierra de Tejeda (2013) by the British poet John Fuller. Is something actually happening in these poems? If so, where, and how? The sonnet sequence offers uncanny depictions of apparently insignificant events questioning stable bearings while suggesting that something deeper is going on elsewhere, beyond the poet’s reach. Action is generated by tension between the familiar and the unfamiliar, the visible and the invisible, the human world and nature or matter, engaging the reader in the mysteries of transformation and metamorphosis. These sketches are works in progress allowing us to catch sight of a world unified through numerous underlying connections and networks countering the pending threat of dispersal of disintegration.

At present, design and construction of all-FRP structures with the use of GFRP are developing. All-FRP frame structures use bolted connections to form nodes between the elements, particularly steel bolts. This research focuses on the use of FRP pultruded plates instead of chords and webs. Frame construction nodes are formed by adjoining frame elements at different angles to the chords through gusset plates. In accordance with the literature analysis, a small number of tests have been carried out to investigate connections at angles to the pultrusion direction the pultrusion direction. Both experimental and numerical studies made with pultruded plates and L-shape FRP profiles have demonstrated that the plates have considerable influence on the strength and deformation of joints so that the joints failure mode involves mainly the bolted plate. These results were then compared against numerical predictions obtained using Ansys for finite-element analysis.

This paper proposes, starting from Paul Ricoeur's reflections concerning the philosophy of justice, three schemes of thought, articulated one to the other in a perspective of philosophy of educational practices. An extended conceptualization of autonomy is supported, as a reflexive inscription of each human subject in a symbolic and practical order. The first issue lies in the dialogical opening of the (anthropological) connection between subjects and norms; the second issue thematizes the amplitude of the (sociological) distribution of chances for each subject to carry out its presumed capacities to bind itself institutionally to a symbolic order; the third issue outlines the responsibility of a (pedagogical) orientation of subjects through a work of figuration and normative location in a moral and curricular space that, in order to be authoritative, would have to put its credibility in common. The hermeneutical approach to the phenomena of binding, distribution and orientation of autonomy finally opens up to the intersection of research in education connected to the issues of cooperative institution of school work and socio-didactic background which condition the possibilities offered to subjects, by the educational institution, to enter and recognize themselves in a symbolic order.

We have forgotten the essential nature of childhood. Such an adult has not discovered that in their loss of playfulness maturity is only reached by becoming once again like a child who gives up the need of relentless conflicting, grasping and clinging in an attempt to coerce the world. Love is the basis for original play and optimal learning. Children’s original play demonstrates that this sense of kindness is one of the most important discoveries in neuroscience; we are hardwired to connect. A loving brain becomes serves as the basis both for our long range biological survival and for our cultural advancement. Such a prosocial brain creates a different emotional framework and an alternative safe physical response with which to receive the world. With these new physical and emotional skills we create different kind of relationships.

Statistical data indicate a significant decline of industrial employment in France. Deindustrialisation is certainly uneven among territories, especially because two industrial sectors, among the biggest exporters, were job creators in recent years: aerospace and shipbuilding. However, deindustrialisation is often considered fatal, meaning that the industrial cities should all be affected. Yet it appears that local governances result in strong contrasting trends in front of industrial change.

- Abstract
In a time of development of New Information and Communication Technologies (NICTs), especially of the Internet since the mid-1990s, « networked ghosts » have emerged. These new ghostly figures (for whom the movie Ring by Hideo Nakata released in 1998 was a milestone) have especially thrived in Japanese horror movies, before spreading at the international level. Overall, their success is based on two main distinct spatial patterns. On the one hand, « contagious specters », whose curse is transmitted and spreads on the model of an epidemic, following interactions within a relationship network. On the other hand, « connected revenants », who are able, like a network engineer, to operate and even to create networks in order to project themselves at will within them; therefore, their range of action tends towards ubiquity. This paper argues that networked ghosts are the embodiments of an ambivalent social fear, swinging between fear of others as a constant source of unknown (contagious specters) and fear of isolation and loss of identity (connected revenants). This article introduces the reader to the laboratory of criticism writing, as the author gets himself and his tools ready for the task, describes the context and circumstances prevailing over his work, and bares himself to the minimum (and maximum) of critical practice by honing out his attentiveness to the object under scrutiny. The following pages evoke a pastoral writing scene in which intuition, encounter and reprise allow for a dialogue with Woolf’s Three Guineas, addressing the logics of sensation and politics of the photograph in relation with other readers like Barthes, Sontag or Butler.

In the following lines I provide a reading diary of all of McCarthy’s four novels, giving my impressions as the reading goes and offering a brief retrospective assessment at the end of the piece. By paying attention to the singularity of the text and the idioculture that emerges from it, I tentatively offer a progressive reading of each single novel, each reading striving to build up connections with the previous novels. This leads me to address a series of issues centring on the prevalence of fakes, matter, connection, and also on the alternative narrative means to raise the reader’s interest as he/she is confronted with the flatness of characters and the programmatic impossibility to sympathise with them.

The work presented in this thesis focuses on the behaviour of compressed stiffeners in steel connections with large dimensions. It is based on three main parts. The first part, based on experimental study, describes two test campaigns carried out at the platform MSGC (Institut Pascal, Polytech Clermont, Université Clermont Auvergne). The two test campaigns concern unstiffened and stiffened panels of different configurations. These panels represent the compressed part of a beam-to-column connection. In total, six configurations of stiffeners were tested: single sided and double sided, over the full height of the web panel and partial length, welded or not to the flanges. The purpose of these tests is to characterize the behaviour of each profile, stiffened or not, and to evaluate its resistance. The tests results allowed to observe the behaviour of each profile, stiffened or not, subjected to compression and to evaluate the influence of some geometrical parameters, such as the stiffener configuration and the profile slenderness, on the global resistance of the stiffened panels. The second part is devoted to the development of a non-linear finite element model built with the Cast3m software using DKT shell elements. This choice is justified by the simplicity of the model in coherence with the available hardware. The numerical model allowed to represent the real behaviour of the stiffened and unstiffened panels until the failure using a load with displacement control. This non-linear calculation takes into account geometric and material non-linearities. The validation of the numerical model is carried out by comparison with the experimental results. Indeed, this model confirmed the experimental observations concerning the behaviour of the fully and partially stiffened profiles. It is thus used to explain some experimental results and to carry out parametric studies to extend the observations to slender profiles. Also, to target engineering applications, the numerical model is used to evaluate analytical formulas given by Eurocode 3. In the third part, after the analysis of the behaviour of each configuration of stiffeners, a calculation approach of the ultimate load of stiffened profiles, based on the experimental and numerical observations, is proposed. A critical view is taken on the design formulas given by Eurocode for unstiffened and stiffened panels. The limits of the application intervals are discussed mainly for unstiffened panels. For the stiffened panels, the failure mode is controlled by the behaviour of the transverse stiffener., Le travail présenté dans ce mémoire porte sur le comportement des raidisseurs comprimés dans les assemblages métalliques de grandes dimensions.

This reading of Alice Munro’s Juliet trilogy, in Runaway (2004), proposes an analysis of the sequence of three stories as one that simultaneously establishes connections and undermines them. As a result, Juliet’s migrations, from one period of her life to another, from one part of Canada to another, from one story to the next, both lead to a build-up of experience that lends itself to interpretation, and to a questioning of the meaning to be attributed to that experience. This is achieved in various ways: through mythological interpretation (and counter-interpretation) of her life; through the choice of a trilogy, by contrast in particular with a dyad; through the very functioning of the trilogy as pictorial tryptich that allows the circulation and therefore the instability and liveliness of sensations; and through the changing meaning of words, that convey evolving emotions and ways of feeling. In these different ways, Munro once more reports acute feelings, while leaving the narrative open to interpretation.

Attempts to unify procedure are presently made either at the regional (particularly European) level or at the world level (especially the Unidroit Principles and rules of the transnational civil procedure). However the main obstacle to these connections seems to be at the cultural level while specific difficulties concern the law of evidence (the discovery or cross-examination mechanisms being partly unknown in France). Therefore we can say after Pascal that access to judiciary truth strongly varies from one country to another. More precisely, the author wants here to determine the relationship between the law of evidence and French culture. After an attempt to determine the main features of French culture (tradition, equality, etc.), the author confronts them with the main rules of the law of evidence would it be at the criminal or civil level. It also appears that culture is made of a certain way of « weaving » legal relationships (filiation, marriage, contracts, nationality...) and that the rules of evidence allow to repair these ties or to create restoring law connections so that we eventually come to understand why a worldwide unification is especially difficult or even impossible without damaging part of the culture.

Abstract Some analytical and simulated criteria were used to determine whether a priori genetic differences among groups, which are not accounted for by the relationship matrix, ought to be fitted in models for genetic evaluation, depending on the data structure and the accuracy of the evaluation. These criteria were the mean square error of some extreme contrasts between animals, the true genetic superiority of animals selected across groups, i.e. the selection response, and the magnitude of selection bias (difference between true and predicted selection responses). The different statistical models studied considered either fixed or random genetic groups (based on six different years of birth) versus ignoring the genetic group effects in a sire model. Including fixed genetic groups led to an overestimation of selection response under BLUP selection across groups despite the unbiasedness of the estimation, i.e. despite the correct estimation of differences between genetic groups. This overestimation was extremely important in numerical applications which considered two kinds of within-station progeny test designs for French purebred beef cattle AI sire evaluation across years: the reference sire design and the repeater sire design. When assuming a priori genetic differences due to the existence of a genetic trend of around 20% of genetic standard deviation for a trait with h2 = 0.4, in a repeater sire design, the overestimation of the genetic superiority of bulls selected across groups varied from about 10% for an across-year selection rate p = 1/6 and an accurate selection index (100 progeny records per sire) to 75% for p = 1/2 and a less accurate selection index (20 progeny records per sire). This overestimation decreased when the genetic trend, the heritability of the trait, the accuracy of the evaluation or the connectedness of the design increased. Whatever the data design, a model of genetic evaluation without groups was preferred to a model with genetic groups when the genetic trend was in the range of likely values in cattle breeding programs (0 to 20% of genetic standard deviation). In such a case, including random groups was pointless and including fixed groups led to a large overestimation of selection response, smaller true selection response across groups and larger variance of estimation of the differences between groups. Although the genetic trend was correctly predicted by a model fitting fixed genetic groups, important errors in predicting individual breeding values led to incorrect ranking of animals across groups and, consequently, led to lower selection response.

We would like to stress the importance of connection of ideas in Locke notion of “knowledge”, and to recall how the author of the Essay defines reason. Reason is not the faculty of syllogistical reasoning, but of examining connections between singular ideas. Connection and association are not in opposition for Locke as an objective link would be to a purely subjective link. Indeed, association is a normal activity for the mind even if it sometimes has pathological consequences. Moreover, probable connections are very important to knowledge and they are not necessarily based on objective reasons (e.g. moral certainty). Finally, the connection of ideas creates habits of mind, just like the association. Therefore we have to understand what characterizes the “good” habits of the mind. Under these conditions, Locke defines connection and association as two ways of thinking with a subtle difference between them: the individual who “knows” is not the one who avoids any association of ideas, but one whose activity of mind goes beyond it. For the reasonable man, association of ideas is not a prejudice that hinders rational activity.

This research work is concerned with the issue of strengthening the structures. Recent seismic events have highlighted the weakness of reinforced concrete structures and more particularly their connections. The use of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) for the reinforcement of RC structures is well documented in the literature and this technique is already used worldwide. Their use for strengthening connection is more recent and there are still many questions about the behavior of composite reinforced RC connection. This thesis focuses on the mechanical behavior of slab/wall connections, as many studies already deal with the mechanical behavior of beam/column connections. All the existing studies have highlighted the importance of the anchoring in the behavior of the connections. Therefore, an important part of the work presented in this thesis will focus on the study of an innovative anchoring solution: composite anchoring mesh. Through 2 experimental campaigns and an analytical modelling, this research highlights the effectiveness of FRPs in the reinforcement of slab/wall connections. The first experimental campaign carried out on 12 small-scale T-connection specimens was conducted to study the effect of various parameters including the steel cross-section, the composite anchor, and the type of fibre used (glass vs. carbon). The purpose of the second experimental campaign conducted on two 1:1 scale X-link specimens was to validate the observations made during the first campaign, but on a more realistic connection like those present in the existing frame. The results of the reinforced specimens will be systematically compared with those of the control tests. The test operations will focus on the determination of the failure mode, ultimate load value, deformations, and crack opening. Analysis of the results will include the study of stiffness, ductility, energy dissipation and Park's damage index. An analytical model was created, based on the experimental results. This model allows the calculation of the strength of a composite reinforced RC slab/wall connection. It is based on the mechanical properties of the materials used, and particularly on the strength of the anchors. In addition to the ultimate load, it provides an estimate of the ductility and a reliable prediction of the failure mode of the connection and its composite reinforcement, Ce travail de recherche s’inscrit dans la problématique du renforcement des ouvrages.

C²C connects, develops and ensures continuity of the complete full concrete section of individual floating concrete modular industrially produced caissons to construct an economic (reduced cost and planning) monolithic continuous watertight floating structure composed of many floating concrete modular caissons arranged in any form which can be used for bridges, oil and gas, nuclear, ports, jetties, renewables floating structures and all other types of floating concrete structures for all phases and static, dynamic, fatigue and hydrodynamic forces in accordance with all international rules regulations and certifying authorities. The modular caissons are produced industrially on the floating factory vessel and individually launched and then mated using C²C. The C²C connection is a continuity of the caisson section for concrete and reinforcement post-tensioning cables and thus the calculations for the caisson section cover the C²C connection.

What is unique to the idea of a threshold is that it is a threshold’s proper definition to generate or signal an inevitable accompanying image of a surrounding boundary or a further field of exploration, even though these accompanying terms or images seem like they should be excluded from its definition. Hegel described this phenomenon of the movement from a concept’s definition to its accompanying terms as the determination of a concept through ‘negation’, and viewed such a method as central to philosophical insight. However, what is not usually noted is that Hegel’s notion of negation is both crucially related to Aristotle’s thought on how definitions are formulated, as well as his postulations about opposites and their connection through a third substantial thing. Through a close examination of the problem of Aristotle’s categories, along with Aristotle’s description of the differentiae, movement, and the meaning of the copula, we can demonstrate that Aristotle’s thinking is at core structured by non-binary ‘threshold concepts’ which are essential to his philosophical system. Finally, we will show how Hegel attempted to take these essentially structural threshold concepts in Aristotle and turn their function into a methodology for both thought itself as well as the philosophical determination of the categories of being.

The long-term success of our implant treatments, from both a biomechanical and an aesthetic point of view, depends on the quality of the implantation surgery and of the prosthetics. The latter criterion depends on the implant-prosthesis connection. The current trend is towards an internal connection, which is more resistant and easier to handle. The Morse taper seems to present less of a micro-gap and less micromovement, because the supracrestal connection limits crater formation and preserves the biological space. The choice of which system to use must ensure medium and long-term maintenance, and so must be as universal as possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We are connected to the rest of the world fully or partially: by our e-mail addresses private and professional, through mailing lists, newsgroups, social digital networks and still of course, by pre-digital social networks (also called “relations”), post office, civil registration and many other manners describing connections which express status, and disturbance that may lead to another situation: disconnected. But connecting and disconnecting are also processes that have little to do with the status of “connected” and “disconnected”. Through the anatomy of a connection, the autopsy proposed for this paper is interested by the distortion between automatic disconnections in the processes of the access to Internet services and the feeling of being permanently linked and living in a “super connected” world described by sociologists and philosophers of ict.

The harm caused by these practices has an economic, social and environmental impact, and forms a complex system with detrimental effects on the community, which are more pronounced in the urban context. In a perspective aimed at reinforcing the use of public transport and at making better connections between the different parts of the city, the present research raises questions regarding the service provided in the neighbourhoods of Brussels and, in particular, the underlying rationales and how to have a better understanding of them. In order to answer these questions, the thesis combines a theoretical approach based on an analysis of the academic literature and an empirical approach for which the Brussels-Capital Region constitutes the case study. In doing so, the measurements taken during the morning rush hour on a weekday highlight a marked heterogeneity in travel time, including travel to a series of major poles of activity. It also appears that the variance observed is subordinate to radial and concentric logic, and that the part of it which is accounted for is not only linked to the factors which are highlighted most often in the literature, such as those related to density.Furthermore, car traffic still weighs heavily on travel time, increasing its length by one quarter on average, despite the policies implemented in recent years, aimed at protecting public transport. But in addition to this, the internal organisation of networks also has a considerable impact, which underlines the role of transport operators. The significant contribution – present or potential – of operators other than STIB is also revealed. Finally, faced with the lack of coherence of the public authorities, the results obtained also show how important it is to make the accessibility of neighbourhoods by public transport a main objective of regional policy. While 30% of the population of Brussels currently resides in neighbourhoods with poor accessibility due to their location, the question is raised with regard to a vision allowing a connection between the development of the city and more sustainable mobility practices in the long term, which is precisely what this fundamental geographical concept allows., Doctorat en Sciences, info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

The failure of a territorial policy is when a territory is lived as abandoned, which is the case of the department of Creuse, in Limousin, in the French region Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Yet, contrary to representations of a remote, neglected and aging Creuse, the reality of modernist and visionary statements by the actors of this department also arises. An inverted landscape. For many, looking at the horizon is thinking the unthinkable. Walking through the Creuse and meeting its actors, we see a new canvas unfolding: not that of a green campaign, recluse, lost in its past, but a colorful mosaic of virtuous dynamics, with this demand expressed: the need proactive support. This report gives examples of projects of direct connections of levers to activate. The requirement of endogenous development implies, and imposes, a new culture of politics. These are the terms of a clarification of a new engineering development support directly related to the local le- viers and territorial dynamics.

Languages provide speakers with a wide range of linguistic units to organize and deliver information (Jisa, Reilly, Verhoeven, Baruch & Rosado, 2002). There are several ways to verbally express the mental representations of events. The speaker, according to the linguistic tools he has acquired, selects the one that brings out the most communicative effect to convey his message. Our study focuses on two markers in Amharic, -mm and dämmo, which abound in the language and in narratives in particular. Our aim is to examine, from a developmental perspective, how the speakers use them, and the functions these elements have in their narratives. We seek to distinguish the communicative and pragmatic functions indicated by means of these markers. To do so, we created a corpus of sixty narrative productions of children from 5-6, 7-8 to 10-12 years old and adult Amharic speakers. The material we used to collect our data is a series of pictures without text “Frog, Where are you?” (Mayer, 1969). This experimental material has already been used in many developmental studies and in several languages (Bamberg, 1987 ; Kail & Hickmann, 1992 ; Berman & Slobin, 1994 ; Kern 1997 ; Akinci, 1999 ; Strömqvist &Verhoeven 2003 ; Jisa, Chenu, Fekete & Omar, 2010 ; Fekete, 2011, Saïdi 2014 and many more). The results show that -mm and dämmo, although all the speakers use them both, do not always have the same scope according to the speaker and vary according to the age. dämmo is mainly used to mark a contrastive topic to signal the concomitance of the events. It seems to be easy to use for children compared to -mm which is much more complex, not only because of its synthetic structure but primarily because it is a multi-purpose morpheme. -mm anchors the information into the context, it highlights the constituent on which it operates., Les langues offrent une multitude d’éléments linguistiques pour organiser et délivrer les informations (Jisa, Reilly, Verhoeven, Baruch & Rosado, 2002). Nous avons utilisé le support imagé sans texte « Frog, where are you?

Some of the most hilarious novels of the last decades begin in gravitas or generate moments of high punctum. This article investigates the ways in which, in contemporary texts, a specific use of humour reverses the logics of comic relief to generate an intensification of pathos or, at least, poignancy. By taking examples from Amis, Barnes, Winterson, Coe and Lodge, it addresses the paradoxical obliteration of distance that humour may generate, as it becomes the instrument of the pathetic in moments of exposure. Besides, at some elementary level, even when used as a distancing, protective strategy, humour is by definition an index of vulnerability for character, narrator and author alike, in so far as it indirectly—metaleptically, in the rhetorical meaning of the term—exposes some hitherto hidden frailty. One step further, it allows for the emergence of alterity since, by putting some distance between the subject and the other, it gets the latter to appear as other, thereby preventing any attempt at identification and totalisation. In all such instances, and as opposed to satire, humour does not work against but along with positive affects. Seen in this light, humour is a powerful expression and operator of vulnerability in so far as it never manages to hide the wound from which it emerges.

The psychologist's perspective on the issue of pain opens the way to new issues. One of the psychologist's roles in chronic pain consultations is to allow a psychological elaboration of the painful complaint. It seems essential for the carers, whatever their specialities, to move away from a dualistic "body-mind" concept, so as not to undermine the reception of this complaint, with its multiple interactions., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Masson SAS.

Plank bonding connection is used to produce efficient structural timber. The bonding achieves excellent rigidity and connection resistance. However, these products are often pollutants and are incompatible with industrial production rates due to the pressing time. Their performances collapse when the adhesive connection is replaced by rodlike fasteners, such as nails, screws or wooden dowels, but these connections allow a quick assembly. In these assemblies the contact surfaces between planks are not used for transmitting loads. The purpose of this study is to point out how mechanical preparation of the interfaces improves the performance of timber connections. The aim is to produce structural members without volatile organic compounds (VOC), achievable by an industrial robot allowing for flexibility, and using mixed wood local species. The first part of this study consists in identifying and analyzing reconstituted wood systems, as well as showing how to conduct a design by taking into account the partial composite action of connectors. This part explains that the chosen behavior of the mechanical connections in reconstituted systems is frequently very imprecise and leads to significant differences in design. The second part describes a methodology to overcome this lack, developed from the nonlinear modeling of a beamtype component. This approach leads to determine the fastener's secant stiffness for an exact linear calculation for engineers. The outcome of this methodology is the quantification of the fastener's secant stiffness by a related behavior rather than a general normative behavior. Due to the flexibility of members, a third part presents a reflection on the use of the contact surfaces for transmitting loads. The plank interfaces were machined in order to obtain grooves. This binding allows the transmission of shear and torsion forces in the intersection plane of the planks. Maintaining the contact is managed by the development of a wooden conical screw. To validate these principles, test campaigns were carried out to measure the performance of the groove, the wooden conical screw and their simultaneous use. The last section deals with the implementation of the improved assembly in structural members in order to confirm its potential. The first element type is a castellated beams and the second one is a bracing wall. Experimental results are compared with numerical models including the nonlinear grooved screwed connection behavior.

In French spoken discourse, the participant in the position of listener is expected to produce an important amount of varied contributions and feedback. The point here is not to study detachment occurrences in the speech of only one participant — the speaker — but rather to analyze under which conditions the additions of the listener are taken into account or by-passed by the speaker.

The research presented in this thesis deals with the behaviour of steel bolted endplate connections. The first part, with experimental character, describes two series of tests on endplate connections realized at the Laboratoire de Mécanique et Ingénierie (LaMI), Blaise Pascal University (Clermont-Ferrand). These two series concern connections of beam-to-colum or beam-to-beam types. Thus, eight specimens of connections, with various geometrical configurations, were tested to estimate the resistance, the rigidity and the rotation capacity. The studied parameters are the dimensional characteristics of the endplate (flush or extended) and its reinforcement. The results obtained allowed the characterization of the nonlinear behavior of bolted steel connections with endplates and the analysis of the contribution of some components on the global rotation of the connection. The second part is dedicated to the development of a non linear three-dimensional numerical model using finite element software CAST3M. The model allows following the real behavior of the endplate connection up to failure. It takes into account the material and geometrical non linearity (contact, plasticity, large displacements). To validate the numerical model, its results are compared with those from the experiment. So, to keep a practical aspect to the developed model, its results are confronted with the analytical formulations of Eurocode 3. The model allowed the analysis of the evolution of the stresses and the plasticity in various zones of the connection. It confirmed the experimental observations concerning the influence of the endplate stiffener on the mechanism of transfer of loads through its extremity. A parametric study is done to analyze the influence of the position of the endplate stiffener and the column stiffness on the global behavior of the connection. In the third part, the influence of the bolt bending on the behavior of the T-stubs, which represent the tension zone of the connection, is analyzed using a 3D finite elements model. As for the model of the connections, the model developed for the T-stubs takes into account the material and the geometrical non linearity. A parametrical study is done to estimate the effects of parameters such as the dimension of the T-stub, the rigidity of the washer, the position of the bolt and the thickness of the flange on the behavior of the T-stub and in particular the bending of the bolt. A particular look is carried on the influence of the bending moment on the behavior of the bolt, usually considered loaded only in tension., Le travail présenté dans ce mémoire porte sur le comportement des assemblages métalliques boulonnés avec platine d'about.
