Framed within the current accountability policies in higher education, under the strains of global competition and the internationalization of universities worldwide, this article examines effective teaching as a pillar of teaching quality in higher education among legal translation lecturers. By linking certain teaching and learning styles to the different dimensions of effective teaching (instructional, organizational, and emotional), the teaching profile of legal translation lecturers in Spain at undergraduate level is analyzed. In addition, student-centered teaching approaches are connected to the use of classroom strategies and methodological resources that characterize effective teaching. The findings of this study, obtained through the distribution of the tamufq questionnaire (Teaching and Assessment Methodology of University Faculty Questionnaire) among legal translation lecturers at undergraduate level in Spain, suggest that those lecturers who adopt a post-positivist approach in their classroom display a greater variety of teaching behaviors and strategies associated with both effective curriculum implementation and higher quality teaching than those who are closer to traditional, positivist approaches. These findings may be particularly useful in the design and implementation of continuous professional development courses and pedagogical training of lecturers.

This paper discusses the stages of the translation process and their ideological features. Teaching transla-tion, which includes an explanation and a simulation of the whole process, is supposed to acquire a new ideological dimension since it takes place in the classroom. The translation process is defined as a series of negotiations and decisions made by several “ideological subjects” involved in carrying out a particular translation service. The simulation of this processis suggested as a didactic method of teaching translation and indicated as a useful introduction into the market of professional translation. The study emphasizes a more active performance of students in learning translation. It also includes some didactic recommendations and explanations of the ideological burden always present in the practice of transla-tion. The paper is mainly based on the Manipulation School approach in Translation Studies.

The author attempts to determine what factors may influence the observed interconnection and affect the subjects’ opinions.

In this article, new translators’ profiles are discussed based on the development of two competences in an undergraduate program: the extralinguistic competence, and the instrumental and professional competence, e.g., specialized knowledge, the knowledge and use of modern technologies, and the knowledge of the market. This article focuses on the importance of developing these two subcompetences in translation programs in order to produce competitive professional translators, and it proposes a set of recommended activities for the development of each subcompetence. Likewise, the advantages and disadvantages of these activities are discussed as well as the changes and implications for translation teaching.

The paper addresses the field of translating legal texts (from Polish into English and from English into Polish) from the point of view of translation teaching and skill development. Due to the changing perspective of the translator’s profession, the necessity has emerged to have a closer look at the way translation skills and competence are developed and how the objective of such training is perceived by users (trainees). The results of a survey (conducted among trainees prior to the course and as a follow-up) are presented; the survey was aimed at juxtaposing expectations expressed by trainees with their follow-up achievements. It was assumed that trainees’ awareness of potential competence-related problem areas (i.e. to underline the significance of such extralinguistic concepts as, e.g., background knowledge or cognitive factors) should be increased, combined with the responsibility for tasks performed as active participants of translation interactions. The complexity of competence, problems with defining the nature of expertise and its applicability to the research context as well as the significance of the didactic process still remain worthy objectives of further research. Trainees should be also made aware of changing market requirements and expectations as to skills and qualifications they should have to be highly appreciated and competitive employees.

Translation in tandems: new possibilities in translation teaching The introduction of Think‑aloud Protocols (TAPs) in the analysis of the translating process dates back to the mid‑eighties. Their goal was to study the cognitive components of translation. Conducted through collaborative translation, they were as well a means of teaching future translators. However after a fair amount of success in the 90s, they faced more criticism in the years 2000. They were reproached their impossibility to distinguish what is essential from that which is not and the lack of exhaustivity of the data thus obtained. However, in the past few years, some have returned to those problems, showing, for example, the usefulness of such methods of analysis in the studies of linguistical problems in the translating process. This article shall present the results of experiments of collaborative translation carried out by, on one hand, students and on the other, academic researchers and translators. The talks carried out by the two partners shed a light on the different problems facing translators and the different strategies they use to solve them. The research now conducted for a while shows that the analysis of translating behaviors during the understanding and producing stages of a translation is useful not only to correct certain flawed behaviors on the part of the students but also to improve the training of professional translators, meeting the needs of, among others, continuing education.

Finland is widely recognized as one of the top countries to live in, with transparency and an excellent education system, which provides for top English proficiencies. The applied English translation case study that is examined in this paper focuses on Finnish into English legal translation teaching coupled with studying at the University of Helsinki. Scrutiny of the course structure, teaching materials and teaching methods was undertaken as part of the empirical research and the efficiency of the new teaching method and course structure inspired this paper. Methodology also included interviews/surveys to obtain up to date data. The case study in brief illustrates that students at the outset of the course acquired the basic concepts of Finnish and comparative law. This was done in a blended learning environment with reverse classroom makeups and small group discussions being used instead of teacherfronted lectures. Students were also asked to look up information on the Internet and undertake translations comments, company visits, and translating an entire court case. From the teacher’s perspective Moodle was used as a file managements system. Results suggest that the students are satisfied with this method and see it as beneficial. It can be used for benchmarking for legal translation courses in others settings.

Le Brésil est un pays qui attire présentement l’attention du monde entier. En effet, les spécialistes de tous les domaines ont les yeux rivés sur ce pays émergent. En ce qui concerne la traductologie, la situation n’est pas différente. Le Brésil suscite l’attention des traductologues de partout qui s’intéressent au dynamisme des pratiques traductionnelles et de la réflexion théorique sur la traduction dans le pays. L’objectif de ce mémoire est de dresser un portrait de l’enseignement de la traductologie au Brésil, plus particulièrement de la Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Tradução (PGET) de l’Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). Ce programme, créé en 2003, constitue le premier programme spécialisé en traductologie au Brésil et le premier doctorat en traductologie en Amérique latine. En 2016, la PGET compte près de 200 étudiants à la maîtrise et au doctorat. Après un parcours des différentes théories d’apprentissage et d’enseignement de la traduction existantes, nous décrivons les principaux travaux en enseignement de la traductologie. Cette description nous révèle que l’enseignement de la traductologie reste un sujet de recherche peu exploré. Nous avons porté notre attention sur le Brésil parce qu’il compte des effectifs d’étudiants spécialisés en traductologie qui se démarquent au niveau mondial. Nous commençons par tracer l’historique de l’enseignement de la traduction depuis 1968, date de la création du premier programme de traduction au Brésil à la Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. Puis, nous abordons l’historique et la structure de la PGET de l’UFSC, notre objet d’étude central. Grâce à une étude ethnographique sur le terrain, nous décrivons les caractéristiques de l’enseignement de la traductologie à la PGET/UFSC, le profil général de ses étudiants et professeurs, la matière enseignée et la méthodologie d’enseignement des professeurs., Brazil is a country which attracts the attention of the whole world. Indeed, specialists from all fields are fascinated by this emerging country. The situation is not different when it comes to Translation Studies. Brazil captivates the attention of Translation scholars worldwide, who are interested in the dynamism of its translation practices and theoretical reflection on translation. The objective of this thesis is to draw an overall picture of Translation Studies teaching in Brazil, more particularly in the Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Tradução (PGET) of the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). This program, established in 2003, is the first specialized programme in Translation Studies in Brazil, and the first PhD in Translation Studies in Latin America. In 2016, there are about 200 students who are registered at Master’s degree and PhD level in the PGET. After an overview of different theories on translation teaching and learning, we describe the main publications in Translation Studies teaching. That description reveals that Translation Studies teaching is still a rather under-exploited field. Our interest in Brazil has been motivated by the fact that it has an important number of students specializing in Translation Studies, which is above the world average. We start by going through the history of translation teaching since 1968, date of creation of the first Translation program in the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. We then engage in the history and the structure of the UFSC’s PGET, our main subject of study. Using an ethnographic field study, we describe the main features of the teaching of Translation Studies at the PGET/UFSC, the general profile of its students and teachers, the subjects taught and the teachers’ teaching methodologies.

Dans un contexte d’enseignement de la traduction, nous comparons différentes traductions françaises d’un même texte original en anglais (le discours d’investiture prononcé par le président Barack Obama en 2009). Certaines des traductions ont été réalisées par des traducteurs professionnels, d’autres par des outils automatiques, d’autres enfin par des apprenants traducteurs. Les outils textométriques permettent de mettre en évidence les similitudes et différences entre les traductions proposées. L’utilisation de l’alignement du corpus au niveau du paragraphe permet de construire un réseau de correspondances à partir desquelles les calculs textométriques produisent des résultats particulièrement intéressants. L’analyse verticale des traductions permet de localiser des portions du texte original que les traducteurs ont traitées de manière similaire. En utilisant cette même approche, nous pouvons aussi localiser les fragments qui donnent lieu, à l’inverse, à des traductions différentes et explorer l’éventail des traductions proposées. Les ressources numérisées ainsi élaborées constituent une aide précieuse pour juger de la qualité du travail fourni par les apprenants. Elles leur fournissent, par ailleurs, un outil d’autoévaluation efficace., In the context of teaching translation courses, different French translations of the same English original text (President Barack Obama’s 2009 inaugural address) are compared. The translations can be divided into those produced by professional translators, those produced by automated tools, and translation learners. Textometric tools allow us to explore the similarities and differences between translations. Using paragraph alignment makes it possible to build a comparison network from which the textometric calculations produce explicit results. The vertical analysis of translations highlights the portions of the original text which translators proceeded in the same way. Using this same approach, we can also, conversely, locate the fragments that leaded to different translations and explore the range of translations. The digital resources compiled during the process of comparison are invaluable for assessing the quality of translation work produced by learners. L’objectif de cet article est d’établir les bases d’une planification curriculaire par compétences dans la formation de traducteurs, que nous illustrons à partir de l’initiation à la traduction (vers la langue maternelle). Pour ce faire, nous situons, d’une part, les défis actuels posés par la planification curriculaire et les besoins pédagogiques qu’ils entraînent, et nous exposons, d’autre part, les fondements de la formation par compétences et les caractéristiques de la compétence en traduction. Nous proposons ensuite les bases d’une planification curriculaire par compétences et tâches de traduction dans la formation de traducteurs : le cadre théorique, les catégories de compétences spécifiques, l’opérationnalisation des compétences, la séquenciation, l’élaboration de l’unité didactique et l’évaluation., The aim of this article is to establish guidelines for a skill-based curriculum in translator training through introduction to translation (into the mother tongue). I begin by describing the current challenges that arise from curriculum development, together with the pedagogical needs they entail, before going on to explain the basics of skill-based training and the characteristics of translation proficiency. I propose a skill and translation task-based approach for translator training, which includes the following: theoretical framework; categories of specific competences; operationalization of competences; sequencing; development of teaching units; and assessment.
