Data are considered to be the "oil of the 21st century". However, the owners of this "commodity" are not multinational companies, but each individual. This paper presents selected results from a representative population survey in the USA and Switzerland. The results show that although financial motives play a role, two other basic motives (information, social influence) are more important. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
