In this paper I discuss the question, how guidebooks can be characterized as a specific format of addressing adults educationally. Three possible classifications are considered: media-based imparting of knowledge, counseling and popularization of science. At the example of companions dealing with issues of climate change, it can be shown, that the format guidebook can imply different ways of structuring adult learning and dealing with knowledge.
