Don Zagier, former director at the Bonn Max Planck Institute for Mathematics, has been awarded the Gumin Prize for Mathematics of the Year 2024. The Carl Friedrich von Siemens Foundation honors his groundbreaking research in number theory and the theory of modular forms. The Gumin Prize is awarded every three to four years to outstanding mathematicians in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. Zagier speaks in an interview about his work, his collaboration with other mathematicians, and his former doctoral student Maryna Viazovska, who received the Fields Medal. He also comments on current developments in mathematics and mentions the Taniyama-Weil conjecture as a problem he would like to see solved. Zagier also mentions his personal story as a prodigy.
