The objective of this work is to analyse the reception of German movies in Brazil during the 1920s and during the 1930s. Interest in cinema as a research topic has been increasing significantly in the Humanities. In particular, the relationship between cinema and history provides the base for a “historical reception research” that gives us the opportunity to "watch movies" through the eyes of the contemporaries. On this line, it is possible to understand the role of the Brazilian Press and of the German written Press in Brazil from that time as instruments of reception. Trough the analysis of the values associated in the press with the German films and trough the study of the contemporary historical context - the development of the film market in Brazil from the 1920s, the spread of Germanism (Deutschtum), the ascent of National Socialism, the Brazilian policy of nationalization, and the outbreak of World War II - it is possible to estimate the effects and interpretations that these productions evoked at a particular audience in a specific time. This work also describes the cultural dimension of the German foreign policy for Brazil (and Latin America) on the first half of the 20th Century. Brazil was considered an important film market for the German film industry since the 1920s, mainly due to the large number of German descendants living in the south of the country. During this decade and specially during the 1930s the German productions were able to consolidate their position in the Brazilian market and to became the main concurrent of the North-American films, which were responsible for around 90% of the screenings. In particular, during the Nazi regime in Germany, Brazil was an important goal of the German foreign policy, whose ultimate objectives was to combat the North-Americans hegemony and cultural influence. The film market was one of the areas of this cultural struggle.
