Background:  Multiple myeloma is a malignant hematological disease characterized by uncontrolled proliferation of monoclonal plasma cells mainly in the bone marrow. Imaging plays a crucial role in diagnosis and follow-up., Method:  This literature review provides information about multiple myeloma, its precursor diseases, and available imaging techniques. Advantages and limitations as well as possible prognostic and therapeutic implications of the different imaging methods are presented in the context of the current literature., Results and Conclusion:  Cross-sectional imaging has replaced conventional X-ray skeletal survey. Widely available whole-body computed tomography is routinely used to detect osteolytic lesions. Magnetic resonance imaging is the most sensitive technique to identify bone marrow infiltration and is recommended in multiple myeloma precursor diseases. Positron emission computed tomography combines morphological and functional imaging. The modification of the implant surface influences implant osseointegration. A physico-chemical means to modify implant surfaces is the creation of hydrophilic surfaces. The aim is an accelerated osseointegration for earlier implant loading and possibly the increase of bone quantity and quality. This review gives an update on the current scientific knowledge on hydrophilic implant surfaces. In vitro, hydrophilic titanium surfaces exhibit different positive effects on hard and soft tissues with significant differences to hydrophobic surfaces. Several cell types and the initial wound healing phase are positively affected. In vivo, an increased osseointegration is detected in the early phase of wound healing. In later stages these significant differences are rarely detectable. Based on clinical trials, early implant loading of hydrophilic surfaces is considered safe and predictable. There is only few data on hydrophilic surfaces in areas of reduced bone quality or quality.

Liver resection is currently considered to be essential part of the curative treatment of primary and secondary liver malignancies. However, long-term survival in these patients is limited by the high incidence of tumor recurrence. Recent clinical and experimental studies have indicated that cellular and molecular mechanisms associated with liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy may have a proliferative effect on occult micrometastases and circulating tumor cells and are thus responsible for recurrent disease. Growth factors and cytokines involved in liver regeneration have also been shown to influence tumour growth and metastasis. However, the underlying mechanisms explaining the interactions between regenerating liver tissue and tumour cell proliferation remain unclear. The current WHO classification of neuroendocrine tumors (NET) differentiates between typical carcinoids (low grade NET), atypical carcinoids (intermediate grade NET) and small cell and large cell carcinomas (high grade NET) according to the prognosis. Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) of the gastrointestinal tract and the pancreas are graded in an identical way. Together with the TNM system this enables a preoperative estimation of the prognosis in biopsies and fine needle aspirates. Well-differentiated tumors are graded into G1 tumors by the number of mitoses, <2 per 10 high-power fields (HPF) and the Ki-67 (index <3 %) and G2 tumors (2-20 mitoses/10 HPF, Ki-67 3-20 %). Discrepancies between the number of mitoses and the Ki-67 index are not uncommon and in these cases the higher value of the two should be applied. The more differentiated tumors of the G3 type have to be differentiated from undifferentiated carcinomas of the small cell type and large cell type with a much poorer prognosis. Prognosis relevant grading of thyroid cancers is achieved by special subtyping so that the G1-G3 system is not applicable. The rare cancers of the parathyroid gland and of the pituitary gland are not graded. Adrenal tumors also have no grading system. The prognosis is dependent on the Ki-67 index and with some reservations on the established scoring systems.

Pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis is regarded as a reactive proliferation of the dendritic Langerhans cell population stimulated by chronic tobacco-derived plant proteins due to incomplete combustion but can also occur in childhood as a tumor-like systemic disease. Currently, both these forms cannot be morphologically distinguished. In the lungs a nodular proliferation of Langerhans cells occurs in the bronchial mucosa and also peripherally in the alveolar septa with an accompanying infiltration by eosinophilic granulocytes and destruction of the bronchial wall. Langerhans cells can be selectively detected with antibodies against CD1a and langerin. In the reactive isolated pulmonary form, abstinence from tobacco smoking in most patients leads to regression of infiltration and improvement of symptoms. In high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) the small star-like scars can still be detected even after complete cessation of tobacco smoking.
