The article summarises three fatalities after attacks by wild animals. The first case describes a 90-year-old woman who died as a result of pneumonia after a bear fell on her and caused multiple chest fractures. The second case deals with a 76-year-old woman who was hit in the middle face by the hoof of a camel and, thereafter, died of myocardial infarction. The third case describes a 27-year-old biologist who died from severe blunt trauma after an attack of a wild living elephant. The article gives a summary of typical injury patterns of selected wild animals and outlines potential reasons of death as a result of the injuries.

There is a decrease in the number of elephants kept in European zoological gardens and circus companies. In the future the import of animals will only be possible for holders which are able to keep family-groups of elephants under species-specific conditions. This will not be possible under circus conditions. This article will describe some problems observed in elephant holdings in zoological gardens and circus companies.

Herpesvirus infections which take a fatal turn on African elephants as well as on Asian elephants seem to occur increasingly not only in the USA but also in European stocks. The endotheliotropic herpesvirus causes a rapidly progressing and severe disease which makes any therapeutical effort unsuccessful and finally results in death of the animal, especially in young Asian elephants. As all attempts to culture the virus failed up to now, molecular biological procedures have to be used more often for diagnostical purpose together with the common methods of pathology, virology, and electronmicroscopical evaluation. This is a report on the case of 'KIBA', an eleven year old male elephant at the Zoological Garden Berlin, infected with the endotheliotropic elephants herpesvirus. 'KIBA' was born at the Zoo in Houston, Texas, and raised within his herd. Upon arriving in Berlin in November 1997 he adapted to the new premises and climate and new social circumstances without any problems. In June 1998 he already serviced three females of his new herd several times. In August 1998 he died after passing a peracute progression of the disease after residenting in Berlin for only 9 months. The dissection of the animal revealed some evidence on an agent damaging the endothelium. Major signs indicating this agent were bleedings in several serous membranes, mucosa and on the the right atrium, as well as other parts of the myocardium. Furthermore there have been ulcerations at various localisations of the whole digestive tract. Slightly basophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies have been found histologically in endothelial cells of different organ samples. An examination of altered organ-material by electronmicroscopy made some herpesvirus-like particles visible. A virological investigation first revealed evidence of giant cell formations with solitary basophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies in different cell cultures, however, without any distinct cytopathogenic effect. Supported by molecular biological procedures the infection of 'KIBA' could be verified as the elephants herpesvirus. By means of PCR and subsequent sequence analysis a DNA-sequence typical for the elephants herpesvirus could be obtained which showed an identity of 97% with the terminase sequence of the elephant herpesvirus described by American authors. The deduced amino acid-sequences were 100% identical. To the terminase of the human cytomegalovirus, the elephant sequence had an identity of 53% (similarity: 74%). Based on the cooperation of ILAT, Institute of Veterinary-Pathology/Free University Berlin, Robert-Koch-Institut Berlin, and Zoological Garden Berlin, the cause of 'KIBA's' death could be discovered immediately. Possible implications of this case especially on breeding and keeping elephants are discussed briefly.

Immunizations against orthopox virus infections require a replicating, but safe vaccinia virus. The strain MVA is well suited concerning this matter. Human beings and animals can be vaccinated without any risk. The virus propagated in cell culture is non-virulent and lost its contagiosity. Multiplication in vaccinated men and animals is limited and excretion does not happen. As known for other attenuated virus strains, there must be a minimal effective virus concentration in the vaccine, which is 10(7.5) TCID50 per ml for MVA. To achieve a solid basic immunity which endures for a minimal of one year, two parenteral applications of MVA at intervals of at least 3 weeks are necessary.

The guidelines for the keeping, the education and the using of animals in circuses and similar institutions, which are made in connection with the law for prevention of cruelty to animals, claim to keep elephants daily one hour unshackled in the group in a paddock. This paper deals with the effect of the paddock to the social, the play, and the comfort behaviour, and the stereotyped movements of circus elephants. Basically for the behaviour of kept elephants are results of observations in nature. A pilot study with 29 elephants in four circuses showed that the paddock enabled the elephants to carry out social and comfort behaviour more frequently than in the shackled keeping. The stereotyped movements were nearly absent by keeping the elephants in the paddock. If they keep shackled, this behaviour anomaly will take up much time.

This tusk specimen contains a metal spear with a wooden component, which is surrounded by a quiver-like osseous encasement. The injury was probably caused by a drop-spear trap. The spear entered the tusk through the base of the pulp. The osseous encasement is constructed by pulpocytes which turned to odontoblasts after stimulation and are responsible for the development of secondary dentine. Secondary dentine is characterized by its irregular arrangement of dentine tubules, in contrast to those of true ivory.

The existence of the elephant is heavily threatened. It is of great importance--for saving our largest land mammal on earth--to research into biology of the elephant quickly and thoroughly. Keeping elephants in Zoos and circus should be improved, breeding efforts must be enhanced and veterinary treatment has to be intensified. This is imperative for all zoo veterinarians.

Rifle bullets in the pulp of elephant tusks cause different excrescences, which are determined by the various materials of bullets, the point of entry and seriousness of inflammation. In two present cases so-called bridges are built by contre-coup effect after bullet penetration into the pulp of the tusk. The material of the bridges contains secondary ivory which differs completely from the characteristic criss-cross patterns of ivory.

The chromatography of the hemoglobin of the rock hyrax (Procavia habessinica) gives two components (73% HbI and 27% HbII). The amino-acid analysis and the sequences of the globin chains elucidated with the phenylthiohydantoin method, did not show any differences between the alpha I and alpha II or beta I and beta II chains, respectively. The different chromatographical behaviour cannot be explained. After chain separation by chromatography on CM-52 cellulose, all four primary structures were elucidated automatically in a sequenator on the chains and the tryptic peptides. In 20% of the beta I chains the N-terminal valine was blocked by acetyl. The alignment was performed by homology with the chains of human adult hemoglobin. The alpha chain of the rock hyrax has 142 amino-acid residues, i.e. one residue more than normal mammalian alpha chains, caused by an insertion of glutamine in the GH region supposed between positions 115 and 116. A comparison of human and hyrax hemoglobins shows an exchange of 21 amino-acid residues in the alpha chains and of 24 in the beta chains. Some substitutions in alpha 1 beta 1 contacts and in the surrounding of the heme are not supposed to effect the function of the hemoglobin. The phylogenetic relationship between the rock hyrax and the Indian elephant (Elephas maximus) on the one hand and with some Perissodactyla on the other, is discussed. Up to now the exchanges of alpha 110(G17)Ala leads to Ser and beta 56(D7)Gly leads to His have only been found in hyrax and elephant. This indicates a certain relationship between Hyracoidea and Proboscidea.

The primary structure of the hemoglobin of the Indian Elephant (Elephas maximus) is given. The sequence was determined automatically in a sequenator. By homologous comparison with adult human HbA, the alpha-chains differ by 24 exchanges and the beta-chains by 27 exchanges. Furthermore, we report p(O2)50 values with regard to altered contact sites with 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate in Indian elephant hemoglobin. Our findings explain the low p(O2)50 and the reduced interaction with 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate. Elephant hemoglobin has, like that of the Llama, only five phosphate binding sites. In addition, we have made an attempt to relate these results to aspects of respiratory physiology. Some implications of these biochemical and physiological results, concerning the Second Punic War and Hannibal's Alp transition, are given.
