This article contributes to the emergent study of the representation of masculinity in Dutch fiction by focusing on the construction of masculinity in five female-authored novels from the late nineteenth century. The analysis is guided by the assumption that female constructions of male characters are to be read as ideological interventions in gender and wider political debates. The focus of this contribution is on novels negotiating contemporary political movements such as the feminist movement, the socialist movement and the anti-revolutionary movement. Their male protagonists participate in these movements and present aspects of a new type of masculinity in the public sphere, which allows for a greater emotional investment in politics. The novels reflect on the opportunities and pitfalls this new construction of masculinity opens up. In general, the novels welcome masculine sensitivity while demonstrating that emotional investment and indulgence should be carefully kept in check both in the public and the private sphere.

The activity report of the Library & Information Germany (BID) for the period from April 2023 to March 2024 was presented by President Dr. Sabine Homilius. The umbrella organization served as a platform for exchange between various library associations and was represented in national and international committees. A general assembly took place, in which various associations and institutions that are members of BID participated. The board of BID consisted of various individuals, including Dr. Sabine Homilius as president. The finances of BID developed positively. The permanent commission Library and Information International (BII) contributed to international professional exchange, with Barbara Lison serving as spokesperson until September 2023, and then Dr. Christoph Müller taking over this role. Activities were carried out as part of the partner country program with the Czech Republic, in which colleagues from both countries participated in events and exchanged ideas. Anke Buettner, director of the Monacensia in the Hildebrandhaus, received the Karl Preusker Medal for her commitment to promoting literature and public access to cultural treasures. The jury highlights Anke Buettner's work in relation to the interdisciplinary symposium series "Public! The City and its Libraries" at the Munich City Library. This series has promoted discourse on the role of libraries in society and provided important impulses for the library landscape. Anke Buettner emphasizes the social role of libraries as a reflection of the diversity of society, particularly in relation to feminism, gender, and diversity. The musical accompaniment was provided by Jelena Kuljic and the welcome was given by Prof. Robert Zepf. The meeting was jointly organized by EBLIDA and the IFLA Regional Division Europe Council. Thanks to EU funding, EBLIDA has created the E-Panema platform to facilitate partner search for EU projects in libraries and support sustainable library projects. Mikkel Christoffersen has assumed the position of director of EBLIDA. Hella Klauser represents the German umbrella organization in the Executive Committee of EBLIDA. There is no representation from Germany in the EBLIDA board for the term 2024-2027. Barbara Lison has completed her term as IFLA president. Dr. Christoph Müller was elected as her successor for the role of spokesperson for the BI-International commission. The BII panel consists of various members. The DeBiA program supports professional stays and conference participation for German library staff abroad. The AnD program supports foreign library staff coming to Germany. Approvals have already been granted for the first quarter of 2024. 27 international guests participated in BiblioCON in Hanover. The author thanks all participants for their cooperation and support.

14. Parodies of Pleasure: Remedios Varo’s Queer Surrealism in Narrative and Painting

surrealism ,parody ,queer studies ,sexuality ,feminism ,Literature (General) ,PN1-6790 - Abstract
Remedios Varo (1908-1963) wrote numerous surrealist texts that dialogue with her prolific artistic production. Alchemy, feminism, and psychoanalysis have been studied as central themes in her paintings, yet this paper focuses on humor and parody in Varo’s written works –including her letters, short stories, and dreams– to uncover the seminal ideas and images that emerge in her visual art. Humor and parody are fundamental links between Varo’s narrative and paintings. She embraces the spontaneity of the surrealist écriture automatique and the illogical amor fou but at the same time pushes the limits of surrealist dogma and creates a uniquely nonpatriarchal universe in which the female has agency and the blurriness between the male and female anticipates current theories of queer sexualities. Seen through a theoretical lens of parody (Linda Hutcheon) and queerness (Jack Halberstam), Varo’s works propose an alternate reading of surrealism.

California’s feminist art of the counterculture era thrived in both women’s religious and secular communities, ranging from the Convent of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary to art collectives established at universities. During the historical transition from high modernism to emerging postmodernism, collective affirmative strategies emerged, renewing the debate between religion and the public sphere. These transformative practices of post-secular affirmativeness fostered a renewed relationship with the Goddess and a close connection between art and life. Engaging with the work on a personal level changed the role of the art historian, moving away from focusing solely on the autonomy and formal aspects of the artwork. The dignity of female artists and participants in artistic activities required the art historian to approach their work with empathy and respect, understanding their motivations. The task then became to develop an empathetic language of mediation in the public space, even for works deemed blasphemous or outside accepted norms. Movements like feminism, womanism, and mujerista demand that art historians consider art in conjunction with the women it helps, rather than in isolation. The shift in how artwork and the role of the art historian are perceived is evident when adopting a post-secular perspective. The key terms used to analyze the art of female artists from California are feminism and postsecularism. Feminism, as defined by Giselle Vincett, involves deconstructing traditionalism, merging Christianity with other forms of spirituality, and reimagining the divine consistent with feminist values. Post-secularism, according to Rosi Braidotti, entails renewing the debate between religion and the public sphere enabling the search for creative, inclusive future scenarios. Artists seeking spiritual support in their work, during what Andrew Blauvelt termed the era of “hippie modernism,” promoted concepts that emerging postmodernism found unacceptable: grand narratives, all-unity, and essentialism. They also ignored the modernist religious-secular binary. These artists made sense of their work and lives through a positive vision of sisterhood and the belief that religion and spirituality can intensify collective life and inspire individual achievements. The article does not dichotomize between female artists working in traditional religious communities and those in secular collectives. In addition to discussing the work of Sr. Corita Kent, who captures the language of advertising, it explores the work of Ester Hernández, who transforms the traditional iconography of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It also examines Linda Montano, who speaks in the voice of St. Teresa of Ávila, among others; Barbara Smith, who establishes the religion of the Holy Squash; and Judy Chicago, who creates a work reminiscent of a female Last Supper with a group of women.

16. A grammar of trinitarian experience? On Sarah Coakley’s théologie totale

The Anglican theologian Sarah Coakley has attempted to think trinitarian doctrine in explicitly experiential terms. Her erotically-charged, pneumatically-centred account of salvific incorporation attempts to articulate, on the one hand, an account of the purgation of desire and the senses through ascetic practice, contemplative prayer and liturgical habituation, while also maintaining, on the other hand, the priority of spiritual appetition as being itself the route through which believers are, gradually, drawn into the trinitarian life. Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: The study makes a contribution by critically articulating an aspect of Coakley’s ‘théologie totale’, a new proposal for the method of systematic and dogmatic theology, one that is centrally focused on bringing in a wider interdisciplinary focus to the practice of systematic theology.

Feminism ,Gender ,Norms ,Power ,Protest ,Social history and conditions. Social problems. Social reform ,HN1-995 ,Sociology (General) ,HM401-1281 - Abstract
The contributions of this book are unique in that they analyse different cases of “gendered” protest in the Western world, from ancient to modern times, in an interdisciplinary manner. They build on the question of what constitutes women’s protest and offer theories from various standpoints of the historical relationship between gender and protest as mutually constitutive. In this review, I analyse some of the limits to these theoretical observations and the conclusions that are drawn from them. I argue that the significance of the book lies in the evidence that it presents of the normative nature of protests – not only in the contributions that discuss protests that uphold gender norms, but also in those that discuss apparently subversive protests – which calls on us to rethink the role of women in driving change.

Poetry as a Luxury and Means for Survival The paper focuses on two blogger-poets, Maja Solar and Jelena Savić, who create poetry and conceptualize the relationship between philosophy and politics. Maja Solar is a refugee from Croatia, now living in Serbia, who sometimes mixes Serbian and Croatian language standards. In her poems, she combines the lyrical with the experimental, while in her essays, she critically reflects on neo-liberalism. The authors discuss her dual position(s), as a poet and philosopher active in the Gerusija philosophy collective from Novi Sad. Jelena Savić is a poet of Romani descent, whose poetry takes identity politics as both its point of departure and object of critique. The authors examine how her experimental writing embodies this dual position. More specifically, the paper investigates how Solar and Savić construct themselves online as engaged intellectuals, poets and writers. In the case of Maja Solar, the authors focus on “Ispod crte”, a blog created by the collective “Za kulturne politike: politika kulture”, and the Gerusija collective’s magazine “Stvar”. By using these examples, the authors review her place in the micro-social map of younger critical intellectuals. In her blog “Usernamekaspoetry: Biti žena, Romkinja, pesnikinja”, Jelena Savić discusses her paradoxical position as an almost invisible poet in the national context, and questions the place of minorities within the nationally homogenous Serbian society. In 2017, Savić started writing about problems of education in the regional e-magazine “Proлetter” and her work became more visible in the post-Yugoslav context.

- Abstract
“Women strike – the world stands still?” Feminist Theories of Radical Social Change between Utopian Anticipations and Real Interventions. This article provides an overview of specific reformations of feminist protest in the present. As an analytical approach, feminist theories of radical social change between utopian anticipations and real interventions are introduced. In addition to utopian anticipations, real interventions can currently be observed in feminist strikes and uprisings worldwide. In order to make them useful for an analysis of feminist blueprints for radical social change, the contribution discusses the following questions: what is the relationship between strategies, means and forms of feminist protest? How are the dynamics of structural social crisis linked to conceptions of radical social change? What shifts in feminist understandings of violence and radicalism are evident in the theoretical frameworks and forms of protest? What utopias and feminist perspectives on the good life and on emancipation are expressed and articulated by the participants? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Will It Explode at Some Point? Resources for Reflecting on Radicality in Women’s and Gender History. A certain distance to affirming and welcoming radical political action is to be recommended in academia, otherwise it might not be possible to explore it at all. But still: what does radical authorship mean in a feminist perspective and in a historical context? What constitutes rebellious forms and content? What about them is capable of touching, captivating, seducing – and advancing critical analysis? This essay presents for discussion a number of works that engage explicitly or implicitly with political radicality, among them a hit list of radical history, an explosive language experiment from 1970s lesbian feminism, a meandering search for the archives of radicality, and powerful images of gender and anti/racism in Third Cinema. Will it all explode? Let’s try. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The parable of the Prodigal Son is traditionally viewed from an androcentric perspective, focusing on the male characters, such as the father and brothers. However, this article suggests that the original listeners may have perceived female characters as present and significant. It briefly explores the roles of the Prodigal’s mother and the father’s mother, proposing an alternative interpretation. Evidence indicates that a 1st-century audience might have envisioned a parallel narrative, termed ‘the Parable of the Two Mothers’, within the story. This imagined parallel parable could reflect the high-context understanding of the original hearers. The article aims to reconstruct this proposed parallel parable not only as a potentially imagined narrative within the Prodigal Son but also as a counter-narrative tool. This tool seeks to aid faith communities in addressing gender-based violence (GBV) by offering a narrative device that brings women’s voices to the forefront in congregational and social contexts. Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: The interdisciplinary nature of this article contributes to the debate on the roles and importance of women in the church by investigating the value that women had in the parables of Jesus. Furthermore, this article promotes an inclusive reading of biblical texts aiming to combat the pandemic of GBV in South African communities. By reading women as present in the text, emphasis is given to the voices of women in the Bible and the importance of their representation today. This research is also in line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5: Gender equality and women empowerment.

41. Narrative Consciousness and Character Psychology in James Joyce’s 'Eveline'

This study holds an interest in the short story “Eveline” by James Joyce as a psychological story that projects a realistic description of an individual’s complex thoughts at moments of decision. A nineteen-year-old woman, Eveline stands by a window in her room watching the evening and listening to passing footsteps but meanwhile brings into her mind memories and thoughts about herself and her family, past, present, and future. By using the psychological theories of Sigmund Freud of the conscious and the unconscious, this article endeavors to elucidate Joyce’s narration of Eveline’s stream of consciousness as she decides to elope with her lover Frank. While representing the character’s psychological structure graphically, I demonstrate that her psychic activity consists of repressed energy and of activity of all levels of consciousness. Finally, this study ultimately presents a feminist and materialist analysis of “Eveline” that projects the conditions of early twentieth- century Dublin.

The purpose of this article is to analyze and interpret a volume of poetry by Czech-Polish author Renata Putzlacher-Buchtova. The writer does not hide her fondness for the works of the Russian writer Michail Bulgakov, and it is to The Master and Margarita that she refers in a collection of as many as fifty-seven poems. Significantly, the poet changes her literary perspective and places a woman in the central plane of events: Margaret. She reinterprets her character, creating a “proud hag Margot”, rather than a “God-guilty creature, Gretchen”. Thus, the literary allusion became for the poet a form of “renewal” (or…, “reconstruction”) of the ingrained patterns in literary culture. The article is divided into three acts, consisting of a theoretical introduction, which introduces the reader (in a condensed manner) to the most important feminist theories. The second act is devoted entirely to the poems of the Czech-Polish author. The third, on the other hand, is comparative in nature, in which Virginia Woolf’s Own Room is the “new light” of comparison.

reproductive rights ,labour movement ,feminism ,women’s work ,unpaid work ,Austria ,History (General) and history of Europe - Abstract
This contribution explores the interplay between labour and feminist activism in Austria during the 1970s and 1980s. Focusing on the often overlooked nexus of the women’s liberation movement and the trade union movement, the analysis looks into the forms of organisation and protest used by women activists from various political affiliations on the left, including social democrats, communists and emerging alternative and green groups. These protests included the struggle for reproductive rights, conflicting ideas on the inclusion of domestic labour into labour activism, the significance of partnership as an activist concept, and the challenges of joint actions. The material is analysed using a combined source-critical and theory-driven approach, employing hermeneutic methods to reveal specific debates and the complex dynamics of cooperation and distinction in both labour and feminist activism. The study thus shows that the activism of women organised in communist, alternative (radical) left and socialist trade union contexts was part of the activist cycle of feminist movements in the 1970s and 1980s.

This article outlines some of the "Literacy, Gender and Diversity (LITGENDI)" (UV-SFPIE_PIEE-2732068) project outcomes, coordinated by the University of València’s Faculty of Teacher Training (2022-24). Integrating a feminist point of view towards art into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, this project aimed to deepen learning through critical engagement with social issues and celebrate female artistic figures, enhancing students’ critical consciousness. Implemented in a Valencian artistic baccalaureate, this multimodal approach proved to significantly boost student motivation and engagement by adopting arts from a feminist viewpoint. Despite its limited timeframe and sample size, the project showcases the impactful role of arts in fostering inclusivity and addressing gender inequality in education. It advocates for an academic shift towards transformative learning and curriculum innovation, emphasizing the importance of content selection to prepare students for global challenges. LITGENDI exemplifies art's power in revitalizing EFL multimodal education and promoting transformative student engagement.

German literary critique reads the work of the Congolese author Fiston Mwanza Mujila through the lenses of his national identity. My paper will demonstrate that, the opposite, Mujila subverts and deconstructs the category of 'Africaness' or identity, narrating a world where the global dimension of late capitalism has inscribed itself into the very fabric of social life. Yet, in doing so, Mujila does not simply negate identity, but develops a new and radical politics of representation. By using a radical realism in a double sense, Mujila mediates the categories of the abstract global (the real abstraction of capital) and the concrete moment of identity. In this regime of representation, the experience of identity is always also the experience of the structural violence of capitalism. By approaching identity through the perspective of capital and dissecting capitalism through the lenses of identity, Mujila, I claim, rejuvenates the ideas of social realism.

INTERNATIONAL organization , *WAR , *INTERNATIONAL relations , *FEMINISTS , *PEACE , *FEMINISM - Abstract
The article "A Little Bit of Peace..." discusses the importance of feminist foreign policy for world peace. The author argues that the inclusion of women's experiences and knowledge in international politics can help reduce wars and violence. She criticizes the existing world order as not being a solution to conflicts and suffering. The author raises the question of why women are still underrepresented in the discipline of International Relations and at the political level. Feminist scholars advocate for ending the invisibility of women and establishing a gender-specific perspective on life and politics. Feminist foreign policy aims to overcome patriarchal violence and militarism and focus on peace and crisis prevention. It is criticized that countries like Sweden and Germany, which see themselves as pioneers in feminist foreign policy, still sell weapons to states like Saudi Arabia. A feminist foreign policy should not pursue a policy of violence. [Extracted from the article]
