The paper aims to investigate the extreme sanctity of Angela of Foligno by analyzing certain passages of Memoriale that are particularly eloquent in expressing this quality thanks to the powerful intensity of the images they convey. And yet Angela’s extremism is expressed not through her visions or ascetic actions – however intense they may be – but in her total adherence to God, her embracing pure love in its highest and most extreme form.

En este trabajo analizaremos la concepción de Leibniz acerca de la aplicación de la matemática a la física entre los años 1677 y 1690. Reconstruiremos esta concepción fundamentalmente a partir de algunos conceptos relacionados, como son los de “atributos” o “cualidades acompañantes”. Veremos que, por aplicación de la matemática a la física, Leibniz entendió específicamente la posibilidad de dar explicaciones mecánicas que dan cuenta de la causa inmediata e inteligible por la cual tienen lugar las cualidades confusas, en un sentido que debe ser dilucidado. Estas explicaciones revelan, por lo tanto, la estructura a parte rei a partir de la que tienen lugar las sensaciones.

El presente trabajo analiza, en sus rasgos y novedades principales, la reciente aprobación de la norma de empleo público de Andalucía. Junto a dar algunas notas sobre el contexto y el marco estatutario en que la misma se dicta –necesario para entender el alcance de la norma–, se da cuenta de sus principales novedades y se analizan las principales herramientas de cambio que se incluyen en la misma realizando, a estos efectos, una reflexión sobre el mayor o menor acierto de estas.

Abstract. In this paper, I argue that Empedocles’s peculiar expression according to which the roots – living entities, each endowed with thought and desires – “are themselves” forces the reader to think of them not solely as the principles of generation, never born and destined never to perish, but also as the true being, in the sense that the many particular entities are only an aspect, an image, a form assumed by the roots. I then argue that in his Timaeus Plato implicitly opposes Empedocles by describing the four elements as generated, sensible, and corporeal: therefore, not as entities with life and thought or even the true being, but as contingent forms or images of necessity. In this way, Plato prevents Empedocles’s theories from developing into a tradition: no longer conceived as intelligent and living beings, in ancient physics the four elements become inert matter.

The hype on generative AI has raised concerns about the spread of disinformation but also opened up new opportunities for hybrid journalism. The proliferation of political propaganda campaigns spread across digital media during election periods constitutes a challenge for journalists who struggle to exercise information gatekeeping. AI-based tools can in principle help, but journalists are resistant to using them since they are sceptical about their compliance with news values and their scarce user-friendliness. To cope with such issues, we present Botlitica, a GPT3-based chatbot able to answer users’ questions according to the information shared on different social media by a given political party which is, thus, embodied by the AI agent in the conversation. The back-end and front-design of the chatbot are devised to privilege transparency. We report the results of a preliminary evaluation of Botlitica which show that the tool fastens journalists’ capabilities to navigate propaganda campaigns inducing them to exercise critical thinking.

In visual communication research there are already several methodological approaches for creating image types. These approaches work with creating typologies based on the representational features of visuals / image motifs, reducing the complexity of extensive visual material. However, we argue that in everyday visual communication, the meaning of images depends largely on the practices in which they are embedded and not on the motif. This paper’s aim is to propose a methodological design for an image type analysis that considers both the representational and the artifact-related component of images, following a texto-material understanding of images. We illustrate the procedure step by step through an empirical study that explores visuals in couple relationships in Switzerland. The method enables a qualitative analysis of a large number of visuals that combines a) the creation of image types and b) a dynamic approach to in-depth visual analysis. Image types resulting from this procedure are more heterogeneous in motifs compared to previous traditions of image type analysis but allow for considering both the visual and the material dimensions of visuals, e.g., practices in which images are embedded. The approach builds on existing methods and contributes to the advancements of methods within visual communication research.

In November 1957, a significant milestone in the history of Opus Dei in the United States –which he had started in 1949–, marking the establishment of two distinct circumscriptions: the Chicago region and the Washington region. This article focuses on the formative years of the Washington region, spanning from 1957 to 1961, specifically highlighting the experiences of the male members of Opus Dei. It provides a chronological account, outlines the geographical and demographic aspects, and delves into certain institutional aspects, such as the organization’s relationship with the American hierarchy and its presence in Washington D.C., Boston and Cambridge, and New York.

Al centro dell’attenzione ci sarà particolare su una tipologia di edifici che altrove conosce in questo periodo grandi mutamenti: i castelli. This article engages with the population process of terminal concepts in the nuclear ontology of FunGramKB. The methodology employed is based on the COHERENT procedure. Our aim is to work on the subontology of #EVENTS by inserting some of the English and Spanish verbs of complain that have not been created yet. Although the basic concept +COMPLAIN_00 is lexicalized by units some units, lexical items such as boast, brag, object, reclamar, and clamar have not been included. These will be subordinates of +SAY_00 and described in COREL language. It is our purpose in this investigation to develop the terminal concepts of $BOAST_00, $DISAGRE_00, $OPPOSE_00, and $DISAPPROVE_00, which will complete the subdomain of complain verbs in these languages.

Abstract Nicopolis foundation betwenn ideology and politics The paper aims at analyzing the multiple meanings that the foundation of Nicopolis by Octavianus implied. Whereas the modern scholarship commonly focuses on the ideological function of the foundation – namely the celebration of Octavianus’ victory over Antonius in the battle of Actium– it will be shown that Octavianus, by means of the foundation of the city, also aimed at conveying precise political messages both to those that supported him against Antonius and to the allies of the latter. The analysis of literary sources and epigraphic documents will also permit to explore some examples of responses among Greek communities to Octavianus’ victory at Actium and to the subsequent foundation of Nicopolis.

The Situationsethik began to be a source of concern for the Roman authority only at the beginning of the 1950s when some Catholic authors promoted a morality that, in evaluating an act, took greater account of the context rather than the universal moral law. Through the examination of the archival material of the former Holy Office, it was possible to reconstruct the stages of the path that led the ‘Suprema’ to carry out severe investigations on some scholars (Fuchs, Michel, Leclercq, Tiberghien) and to the promulgation of the Instructio of 1956 with which the ethica situationis was condemned.

Il finanziamento degli investimenti in asset immateriali presenta complessità e criticità tali da portare diversi osservatori a parlare di uno strutturale “intangible financing gap”. Assodata la preferenza rispetto al debito per finanziamenti tramite capitale di rischio (stante l’impossibilità di utilizzare gli asset intangibili come collaterale), la letteratura individua comunque molteplici limiti al ricorso all’equity capital e alla quotazione in borsa. Si tratta di considerazioni che danno luogo ad altrettanti convincenti argomenti a supporto della tesi che vede nell’equity financing di tipo “privato” (venture capital e private equity) la fonte di finanziamento d’elezione per gli investimenti in asset immateriali. This article is both an editorial introduction to the guest-edited special issue of JoSTrans on Translation Automation and Sustainability, and a position paper in which we propose a model for evaluating the sustainable use of automation technology in translation and beyond. As grounding notions, the article reviews definitions of automation and considers the urgency of sustainability. Thereafter we propose an adaptation of Elkington’s (1997) triple bottom line, giving equal weight to evaluation based on people, planet, and performance, describing each of these elements in turn. Finally, we introduce the articles from this special issue, in which authors describe various aspects of automation technology in translation with a focus on sustainability.

RESUMO O artigo mostra a forma em que Reinhold, nos seus Beyträge de 1801-1803, supera uma mera concepção progressiva da história da filosofia e entende os erros descobertos nas tentativas falhas de realizar a tarefa fundamental da filosofia em uma dimensão positiva como instrumento heurístico imprescindível para a realização dela (§ 4), após uma descrição sintética das críticas reinholdianas aos modelos de filosofia transcendental encarnados por Fichte e Schelling, ao suposto realismo de Bouterweck e às filosofias do senso comum que estão conectadas com elas (§ 2), e como consequência da demonstração da inevitabilidade das tentativas parciais de realização da tarefa fundamental da filosofia (§ 3) e do aprofundamento da noção de Nexus, que permite reconduzir as tentativas parciais à própria estrutura imanente da razão. A resolução de tarefa fundamental do filosofar por meio de uma heurística da filosofia envolve, assim, um questionamento do realismo racional como uma teoria acerca da realidade e valoriza a sua função metacrítica, a saber, o questionamento dos pressupostos básicos do filosofar enquanto uma prática de racionalidade.

Opus Dei began its apostolic activities in the United States in 1949 but in November 1957 a new chapter in the history of Opus Dei in the United States commenced with the establishment of two distinct circumscriptions: the Chicago region and the Washington region. This article covers the early years of the Chicago region, from the point of view of the male members of Opus Dei, from 1957 to 1961. The timeline, geography, demographics and some institutional dimensions are presented. Special attention is given to the relationship with the American hierarchy. During these four years, Opus Dei grew from approximately sixty-five members in 1957 to two hundred in 1961, in the Chicago region alone. The article also discusses the establishment of two new centers, one in Gary, In. and the other, alongside the University of Notre Dame, which were added to those already existing in Chicago, Madison, Milwaukee and St. Louis. And finally, the article outlines the first steps that would lead to the launch of the Shellbourne Conference Center in 1962.

This article reports some of the main achievements of the EU-funded PRINCIPLE project in collecting high-quality language resources (LRs) in the legal domain for four under-resourced European languages, namely Croatian, Irish, Norwegian and Icelandic. After illustrating the significance of this work for developing translation technologies in the context of the European Union and the European Economic Area, the paper outlines the main steps of data collection, curation and sharing of the LRs gathered with the support of public and private data contributors. This is followed by the description of the development pipeline and key features of the state-of-the-art bespoke neural machine translation (MT) engines for the legal domain that were built using this data. The MT systems were evaluated with a combination of automatic and human methods to validate the quality of the LRs collected in the project; the high-quality LRs were subsequently shared with the wider community via the ELRC-SHARE repository. The main challenges that were encountered in this work are discussed, emphasising the importance and the key benefits of sharing high-quality digital LRs.

The RXN for Chemistry project, initiated by IBM Research Europe – Zurich in 2017, aimed to develop a series of digital assets using machine learning techniques to promote the use of data-driven methodologies in synthetic organic chemistry. This research adopts an innovative concept by treating chemical reaction data as language records, treating the prediction of a synthetic organic chemistry reaction as a translation task between precursor and product languages. Over the years, the IBM Research team has successfully developed language models for various applications including forward reaction prediction, retrosynthesis, reaction classification, atom-mapping, procedure extraction from text, inference of experimental protocols and its use in programming commercial automation hardware to implement an autonomous chemical laboratory. Furthermore, the project has recently incorporated biochemical data in training models for greener and more sustainable chemical reactions. The remarkable ease of constructing prediction models and continually enhancing them through data augmentation with minimal human intervention has led to the widespread adoption of language model technologies, facilitating the digitalization of chemistry in diverse industrial sectors such as pharmaceuticals and chemical manufacturing. This manuscript provides a concise overview of the scientific components that contributed to the prestigious Sandmeyer Award in 2022

This contribution focuses on one of the identified case studies of the Franciscan Observance architecture in Umbria, the convent of San Bartolomeo near Foligno (PG). It addresses the issue of heritage documentation methodology through integrated 3D laser scanner digital survey techniques and SfM/IM photogrammetry close range and UAV. The investigations aim at developing a preliminary diagnostic framework of the San Bartolomeo complex after the damage suffered in the 2016 earthquake in Central Italy. The research is part of the broader context of the three-year European project F-ATLAS – Franciscan Landscapes: The Observance between Italy, Portugal, and Spain, funded by the JPICH 2019 call. The Project aims at the census of the Franciscan Observance’s convents and their enhancement in a European dimension. The Project also tends to verify the state of conservation and the possibilities of a compatible development of reuse projects, trying to connect the building phenomenon within its territorial and cultural context.

Leandro Polverini passed away in Rome on 18 April 2023; he was born in Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni (Arezzo) in 1935. Leandro Polverini’s body of work has been an inspiration to many; without the example he set, we doubt whether our idea of a journal entirely devoted to the history of classical scholarship would have quite materialised in the way it did. HCS loses an unfailingly supportive member of its Editorial Board, who followed the development of the journal with the insight, attention, and warmth that those who had the good fortune of working with him know well. We remember him with gratitude, and we shall miss him deeply.

The two volumes presented here (A. E. Colla, Trattato di armonia moderna e contemporanea and M. Quagliarini, Costruire la musica) are part of a current trend of renewal in harmony and composition treatises in Italy. Colla addresses post-tonal harmony in an innovative way by showing harmonic-compositional techniques developed from the 20th century to the present day; specifically, he devotes his two volumes to "harmonic partials" (secondary frequencies emitted together with a main frequency) and various forms of symmetry. In his book, Quagliarini introduces a compositional method based on the construction of chords and how to tie them together to build coherent structures of increasing size. Both volumes relate concepts that are pecualir to musical syntax to extra-musical elements.

This paper presents and discusses the findings of a cross-linguistic corpus-assisted analysis (Partington/ Duguid/Taylor 2013, Taylor 2014) of the Volkswagen Emissions Scandal Discourse in German and Italian news. It was conducted to answer the following research questions: − which framings are recurrently used to represent the Emission Scandal as an economic issue? − how do these language patterns influence its representation as a primarily environmental issue? The analysis was conducted by applying Frame Theory (Goffman 1974, Tannen 1993, Lakoff/Wehling 2012), Metaphor Theory (Lakoff/Johnson 20032, Larson 2011) and Erasure Theory (Van Leeuwen 2008, Stibbe 2015) within the more general framework of Ecological Linguistics (Fill/Penz 2018) – “an ecolinguistic approach to the analysis of [...] ‘discourses’, ‘lexicogrammatical patterns’, ‘sense-making resources’” (Steffensen/Fill 2014). The data sets include news articles (totally 230) published from 20th September to 20th October 2015 on the websites of “Die Zeit” (115 articles) and “La Repubblica” (115 articles), and containing at least one of the following keywords of the scandal in the respective language: Abgasskandal or Abgas-Skandal, Abgasaffäre or Abgas-affäre, VW-Skandal, VW-Affäre, Diesel-Skandal; scandalo Volkswagen, scandalo emissioni, scandalo delle emissioni, caso Volkswagen. The quantitative-qualitative analysis of collocations (Baker 2006) and concordances suggests that the framing Dieselgate damages the German economy emerges in discourse, thus backgrounding (Stibbe 2015) the environmental and ecological issues related to the Volkswagen Emissions Scandal (Dieselgate damages Environment and human health).

Die Verwendung von fluorierten Monoalkoholen, insbesondere von Hexafluorisopropanol (HFIP), als Lösungsmittel kann chemische Reaktion auf spektakuläre Weise beschleunigen. Frühere Arbeiten haben gezeigt, dass diese erhöhte Reaktivität mit der Wasserstoffbrückenbindungsstruktur dieser Flüssigkeiten zusammenhängt. Hier untersuchen wir die Wasserstoffbrückenbindungsdynamik von HFIP und vergleichen sie mit der seines nicht fluorierten Analogons, Isopropanol. Ultraschnelle Infrarotspektroskopie zeigt, dass die Dynamik einzelner Wasserstoffbrückenbindungen in HFIP etwa doppelt so langsam ist wie in Isopropanol. Überraschenderweise legen dielektrische Spektren das umgekehrte Verhalten für die Dynamik von Wasserstoffbrücken‐gebundenen Clustern nahe: kollektive Umlagerungen sind in HFIP dreimal schneller als in Isopropanol. Dieser Unterschied deutet darauf hin, dass die Wasserstoffbrücken‐gebundenen Cluster in HFIP kleiner sind als in Isopropanol. Die Unterschiede in der Clustergröße lassen sich durch Unterschiede in den Stärken der Wasserstoffbrückenbindungen erklären. Die geringere Clustergröße in HFIP kann Reaktionen beschleunigen, da die Konzentration der reaktiven, endständigen OH‐Gruppen der Cluster erhöht ist, während die schnelle kollektive Dynamik die Geschwindigkeit der Bildung von Wasserstoffbrückenbindungen mit den Reaktanden begünstigen kann. Die längere Lebensdauer der einzelnen Wasserstoffbrückenbindungen in HFIP kann die Stabilität der Wasserstoffbrücken‐gebundenen Cluster erhöhen und damit die Wahrscheinlichkeit der Ausbildung von Wasserstoffbrückenbindungen zwischen Reaktanden und Lösungsmittel steigern. A lo largo del último siglo, se ha intentado examinar la naturaleza de los estados mentales desde numerosas perspectivas, aunque ignorando con frecuencia que toda teoría de la mente también debe analizar adecuadamente las emociones. El propósito de este trabajo es explicitar los requisitos que debe cumplir una buena teoría acerca de lo emocional, a partir del examen crítico de tres enfoques distintos: el conductismo, el funcionalismo y el enactivismo. Argumentaré que, entre ellos, solo el último constituye una teoría satisfactoria porque explicita el rol precio que cumple la dimensión corporal en nuestra experiencia emocional.

In the framework of symbiotic associations, the so-called “holobiontic” perspective has increasingly emerged, according to which animals and plants should no longer be considered as autonomous entities, delimited by clear boundaries, but should rather be seen as functional units, consisting of inter-relational networks of different species. From this perspective, the functions that were previously ascribed to a single component, must be updated in the light of this relational perspective and rather judged as a product of the functional unit, that is, the holobiont. In a functionalist perspective, the famous conception of the extended mind investigates the hypothesis that the vehicle of cognition can extend not only outside the brain but also beyond the limits of the body, through artificial devices. The present work aims to offer a variant of the extended theory of mind not only as a theoretical possibility but also in accordance with some recent developments in biological and biomedical research. It will therefore be argued that the activity of the human microbiota (bacteria living in associations with the human species) plays a functional role in the regulation of our cognitive processes suggesting that the microbiota constitutes a functional extension of the cognitive system previously described as “human”. The revision and extension of the biological individual in favor of the holobiont as a functional unit (therefore the true creator of cognitive functions) also leads to the need to update the boundaries of the individual as a cognitive agent.

The relationship between the historic city and the businesses that form an essential testimony of the historical and cultural urban evolution is an emerging theme on the international scene. The research program has analyzed the traditional economic and social context of the centre of Florence in relation to the city’s urban zoning and building facades. The study highlighted the need to integrate the documentation and survey phases of the physical realities of the places of commerce with the recording of intangible cultural heritage. The latter are strongly interlinked with the authenticity of a place its features, whose disappearance may irreversibly change the environment itself. The introduction of this patrimonial category, with the UNESCO convention of 2003, led to the development of investigation tools and protocols that also involved, specifically, the scientific sector of architectural-urban design and survey to evaluate the impact of intangible features on the evolution of the city’s image over time.

According to the prevalent reading, we are today witnessing an epistemological conflict that takes the form of a war on science, which is nurtured by disinformation and instrumentalised by populist parties. The aim of this article is to contribute to a more complex reading of the phenomenon, over and above the science vs. anti-science dichotomy. As a result of the entry of science – and scientists – into public debate and public interaction between experts and non-experts we witness the overcoming of the perception of science as a monolith, which is followed by the tendency to overcome a deferential attitude towards scientific expertise. The legitimate exercise of criticism and skepticism towards institutions, however, often ends up conforming to a Manichean vision, which distinguishes good and bad, friend and foe, truth tellers and liars. The unconditional faith in institutions, demanded by technocrats, is overturned by an unconditional mistrust, which does not allow for open claims and compromises. Not denying the centrality of the epistemic dimension of conflict, our hypothesis is that conflicts over science are in fact also – and above all – conflicts of a political nature, that is, conflicts that do not usually have science and technology per se as their object, but rather political decisions on scientific-technical and health-related issues. This suggests, implicitly, that the application of a technology by the market may be more accepted, and thus that the market enjoys greater legitimacy than politics, because the market promises, in the abstract, freedom of choice. The contrast between technocracy and populism, between a policy reduced to conforming to scientific knowledge whose limits and ambiguities are downplayed – or not recognized – and a policy that rejects the role of experts – highlights a generalised distrust of democratic politics. The public sphere, as a place of deliberation and democratic management of complexity and plurality, is thus reduced to the clash between irreconcilable visions.

A interpretação de Hegel oferecida pela autora é profunda e original, mas é completamente ignorada na literatura sobre Hegel a nível nacional e internacional. Tentarei mostrar o papel central que o pensamento de Hegel desempenha no contexto do projeto de Ferreira da Silva em Homo modernus e destacarei dois temas de reflexão que me parecem relevantes dentro do âmbito dos estudos hegelianos

The preliminary results of a comprehensive survey of Sīnīya Island in the Khawr al-Bayḍāʾ of Umm al-Quwain are presented here. The onset of human occupation remains to be confirmed, with scarce evidence for limited activity in the late pre-Islamic period (LPI, c. 300 BC – AD 300). The first major phase of occupation dates to the seventh and eighth centuries (early Islamic period) when a monastery and settlement were established in the north-east of the island. Probably the peak occupation falls between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, when the stone-town of Old Umm al-Quwain 1 was built, followed by the eighteenth to early nineteenth century when the settlement moved to neighbouring Old Umm al-Quwain 2. The town was destroyed by the British in 1820 and moved to the facing tidal island, where Old Umm al-Quwain 3 (the modern city of the same name) developed. This resulted in an emptying of the landscape, and Sīnīya Island was little visited in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, except for the estate of the ruling Āl Muʿallā represented by the Mallāh Towers.

Abstract Background Backfat thickness is an important carcass composition trait for pork production and is commonly included in swine breeding programmes. In this paper, we report the results of a large genome-wide association study for backfat thickness using data from eight lines of diverse genetic backgrounds. Methods Data comprised 275,590 pigs from eight lines with diverse genetic backgrounds (breeds included Large White, Landrace, Pietrain, Hampshire, Duroc, and synthetic lines) genotyped and imputed for 71,324 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). O objetivo deste artigo é retificar alguns mal-entendidos sobre a tese da intencionalidade de Franz Brentano, defendendo uma interpretação diferente da interpretação atual acerca da natureza do objeto intencional e do correlato intencional e propondo uma análise da origem desta confusão conceptual: o problema major está na interpretação que seu aluno Anton Marty faz do objeto imanente, abrindo caminho para uma leitura imanentista da teoria da intencionalidade de Brentano.
